If you enjoyed flying kites in the past, this is bound to interest you. The goal of this game is simply to cut the opponent's kite string. It sounds easy, but it can indeed be quite challenging to be the last kite in the air.

Origin

Kite fighting is a thrilling aerial sport popular in different Asian countries, particularly in India, Pakistan, Japan, Bangladesh, Afghanistan, Nepal, Chile, Brazil, Vietnam, Thailand, and Korea. If you hail from one of these countries, you may have witnessed a tournament or have experienced the sport firsthand.

Although kites are said to have originated in China approximately 2500 years ago, kite fighting started in India. Indians called their fighter kites "Patang". The sport is a fixture of celebration during their spring festival called "Basant", during "Makar Sankranti" and during their Indian Independence day.

Kite fighting is also famous in Pakistan, primarily in certain cities such as Punjab, Sindh, and Lahore. In fact, Lahore is the kite battle capital of South Asian countries. It has also spread to be a popular pastime in Japan, as it’s said that Dutch traders from Indonesia introduced the Indian Patang to Japan. They called it "Nakasaki Hata". The difference is that the Japanese use large kites that require a team to play, and they do not cut the lines of the opponent; rather, they have to force down others' kites to win.

Chilean fighter kites are known as "Volatín". Kite fighting in Chile is usually held during the summer. Professional associations and clubs even host and hold tournaments throughout their summer season.

Bangladesh celebrates kite fighting festivals as well during their Shakrain Festivals where they fly kites from their rooftops.

Afghans are big players when it comes to Kite fighting. However, kite flying was banned in Afghanistan from 1996 to 2001 because the Taliban outlawed kite flying. They called it "UnIslamic" as it distracted young men from doing religious activities, mainly praying. Afghans love this pastime sport and are very passionate about it. Moreover, an Afghan author decided to write a novel about Kite flying. It became the best-selling novel in 2003, titled "Kite Runner". Subsequently, the novel was crafted into a film. When the Taliban movement collapsed, kite flying became legal again, and many Afghan kite flyers rejoiced and partook in the sport once more.

As you can see, kites and the activity of battling them against others has become a global phenomenon. It is our intention to bring this sport to the rest of the world with the Kite Fighter Worldwide VR+NFT video game.

Kite Materials

Kite fighters use specially designed kites for this thrilling game. The kite skins are mostly fabricated from lightweight paper, polyester, and even mylar, while the spars (frames) are made from lightweight or flexible wood like bamboo, but can now be seen with aluminum, fiberglass or carbonfiber materials. 

Traditional Asian kite fighters use a line made of a hemp/cotton blend with finely crushed glass and rice glue.

In India, players use a synthetic line coated with something abrasive like Manja or a coated powdered glass. It is very sharp and can even cut your skin, so one must use gloves for protection. Some use a line with metal knives that can be attached to a hook and can easily cut an opponent's line. There is an additional paste that can reinforce and strengthen the line. If all of this sounds dangerous, it is. Injuries are common amongst kite fighters, which is why we think VR may be one of the best ways to enjoy this sport.

How is it played?

Kite fighting is played individually or with a team. The team typically consists of a group of three: the kite flier, the one that releases the string, and the kite runner. 

There are two ways to cut other players' kite string. You can use "Release cutting" or "Pull cutting" methods. In the release cutting method, once players' lines are in contact, they will let out their line until it cuts the other kite fighter line. On the other hand, pull cutting is when the kite fighter quickly pulls the line towards themselves to create a sawing motion that results in cutting through their opponent’s kite line.

As with all cultural traditions, this activity is passed on to future generations through festivals, clubs, organizations, as well as professional groups which hold yearly tournaments.

Every year, various countries continue to celebrate kite fighting as part of different cultural events. These days, you will even find the sport spreading to new countries, as more people get hooked on kite fighting and go on to join or create kite fighting organizations. Although each country has its own variations on kite fighting, including rules and the types of kites used, the broad participation goes to show how much it is an integral part of their culture.

As historically and culturally rich as kite fighting is, what the sport is missing is a globally connected community and a quality videogame that accurately represents the sport.

The sport is immensely popular in India, Pakistan, as well as many South American and Asian countries such as Brazil and Korea. By introducing kite fighting to a global audience we can highlight areas of opportunity to improve the quality of life in these communities that are less economically developed.

One way in which we are aiming to support these areas is by creating economic opportunities with real-life kite fighting events as well as virtual events. Our team is also creating a decentralized charity by allocating 10% of the project's revenue for the Kite Fighter Worldwide community to come together, propose and vote on solutions that will greatly improve the quality of life within selected regions.

Then, let's not forget the power of blockchain and NFTs. While NFTs will not be needed to play the game, our Gen0 Kite NFT holders will be able to earn unique kite components which are used to build Gen1 Kite NFTs. Kite fighting is prevalent in parts of Asia, South America, and the Middle East. Put simply, opponents maneuver their kites to cut the line of their challengers. While millions have played it for over a hundred years in these parts of the world it remains relatively obscure in Western Countries. But we think our project will change that while providing generous support for the communities in which it originated.

Kite Fighter Worldwide is a project being incubated by three companies working in collaboration to help fulfill the founder’s dream of sharing his passion with the world. The Factory is building the VR game, destined for the Steam marketplace. Griffins Digital is the publisher who is working to manifest the game with the founder, and Invisible Hand Ventures is the Web3 product development studio building the NFT gamification component.
