When looking to hire a software developer for your Web3 startup, it's essential that you understand that Web3 is not just a skill to learn like other programming languages, but a set of concepts that encompass decentralization, blockchain technologies, and token-based economics. Therefore, finding talents for your Web3 startup requires hiring specialists with different profiles, experiences, and skill sets depending on your startup's specific needs.

The best way to go about hiring a software developer for your web3 project is to attract the right candidates with the required skills and the required level of enthusiasm for Web3 technology, specifically for what you are trying to build.

To accurately evaluate if a candidate is a good fit for your company, you’d have to consider candidate's:

1. Familiarity with Web3 technologies

A strong understanding of blockchain technology, smart contracts, and decentralized applications is a critical selection criteria for a Web3 software engineer.

To pick the best candidate, it is important to look out for those who have experience working with the web3 technology stack your company uses and can demonstrate a clear understanding of how they work.

When sorting for candidates who have experience working with your required web3 technologies, you can use the following strategies to identify the right candidates:

Use concise Job postings: Craft job postings that concisely describes the required technical skills and experience with web3 technologies. This will help you attract candidates who have experience with these technologies and help you narrow down your pool of applicants.

Search for keywords on resumes and LinkedIn profiles: Use keywords such as "blockchain", "smart contracts", "Ethereum", "Polkadot", "Cosmos", "Solidity", or other relevant terms when searching for resumes and LinkedIn profiles. This will help you filter through a large pool of candidates, also helping you find those who have experience working with these technologies.

Attend blockchain and web3 conferences and events: Top web3 talents are big-time fans of web3 events, conferences, and hackathons. Attending these events to network with candidates who have top tier experience working with your technologies is an excellent hiring strategy. You can also consider sponsoring or hosting events to attract potential candidates.

Use Web3 talent platforms and marketplaces: Web3 talent platforms provide a network of web3-specific talents. Web3 talent marketplaces help eliminate the uncertainty that comes with vetting candidates. Talent platforms like Kleoverse, Metaintro, and Intropia provide a wide pool of web3 talents to find the best candidates who have experience working with these technologies.

Review open-source contributions: Reviewing open-source web3 projects is an excellent strategy for finding the best-fit talent for your startup. You can find these contributions on platforms such as GitHub, GitLab, or Bitbucket. We advise that you look for candidates who have contributed to open-source web3 projects, as this demonstrates their skills and knowledge in particular areas of choice.

Use assessments and coding challenges: Use assessments or coding challenges to evaluate a candidate's technical skills and ability to work with your web3 technology stack. You can create your own assessments or use existing ones from platforms such as HackerRank or Codility.

A combination of some or all of the above strategies can be used to identify candidates with the unique experience best fitted for your projects.

2. Experience with Web3 development frameworks and protocols

Sourcing candidates with the exact skills and experience to work with your development frameworks will save you a great deal of time in the hiring process.

We advise you to look for candidates who have experience working with the exact Web3 frameworks and protocols you’re building on. They should have a deep understanding of how to develop and deploy decentralized applications on these platforms.

Verifying a job candidate's experience with some web3 development frameworks can be done by:

Asking for references: Ask candidates for references who can verify their experience with web3 development frameworks. You should reach out to the references they provide and ask them specific questions about the candidate's experience working with web3 development frameworks.

Reviewing past projects: It is important to review the candidate's past projects and code repositories to see if they have worked with some of your web3 development frameworks. Look for evidence of experience with specific smart contract development, dApps, or blockchain integration they will be working with.

Asking technical questions: During the interview process, ask the candidate technical questions related to web3 development frameworks. Ask them to explain the concepts behind specific smart contracts, decentralized applications, or blockchain integration. Their ability to explain these concepts in detail can provide insights into their knowledge and experience.

Giving coding challenges: Provide coding challenges related to your exact web3 development frameworks to test the candidate's skills and knowledge. You can include building a simple smart contract or a decentralized application.

Checking online presence: Check the candidate's online presence, such as their LinkedIn, GitHub, or other online profiles, to see if they have contributed to open-source projects or written articles about web3 development frameworks.

Applying these strategies is required to ensure your candidate has the necessary skills and knowledge in web3 development frameworks.

3. Coding skills

A software engineer should have a strong foundation in coding skills, such as proficiency in programming languages like Solidity, JavaScript, Rust, etc.

Evaluating their past work provides you with insights into how they work, think, and coordinate themselves. You should also ask specific questions, and provide coding challenges to ensure they are a good fit for your web3 startup. Strategies to use in validating a job candidate's web3 coding skills include:

Ask for a code sample: Ask the candidate to provide a code sample of a smart contract they have built. Review the code to see if it is well-structured, efficient, and follows best coding practices.

Review past projects: Review the candidate's past projects related to smart contracts. Look for evidence of their knowledge of smart contract development, such as the ability to write secure and efficient smart contracts, or to use tools like Truffle or Remix.

Ask technical questions: During the interview process, ask the candidate technical questions related to smart contract development. Ask them to explain the concepts behind smart contracts, such as state variables, functions, or events. Their ability to explain these concepts in detail can provide insights into their knowledge and experience.

Give coding challenges: Provide coding challenges related to smart contract development to test the candidate's skills and knowledge. This can include building a simple smart contract or debugging an existing one.

Check certifications: Check if the candidate has any certifications related to smart contract development, such as the Certified Ethereum Developer (CED) certification offered by ConsenSys Academy.

A combination of any or all of these strategies will provide enough feedback to ascertain if a candidate is the right fit for your web3 startup.

4. Understanding of Web3 security best practices

Security is a top concern for Web3 startups, and a software engineer should have a good understanding of security best practices, such as secure coding practices, encryption techniques, and threat modelling.

Validating a software engineer's understanding of security best practices to become a core developer for your company is critical as it ensures that the products they develop are secure and do not expose the system to vulnerabilities.

It's important to evaluate a software engineer's understanding of security best practices to ensure that they are capable of developing secure smart contracts. Here are some strategies that can help validate a software engineer's understanding of security best practices:

Ask about security-specific experience: During the interview, ask the candidate about their previous experience working with security in software development. Request that they provide examples of security measures they have implemented, such as encryption, hashing, or access control.

Ask about OWASP Top 10: Ask the candidate to explain the OWASP Top 10, which are the top 10 vulnerabilities in web applications. This will help you evaluate their knowledge of the most common security threats and how to mitigate them.

Ask about secure coding principles: Ask the candidate about secure coding principles such as input validation, output encoding, parameterized queries, and error handling. This will help you assess their understanding of the most important secure coding practices.

Review past projects: Review the candidate's past projects to see if they have implemented security best practices, such as using SSL/TLS, implementing authentication and authorization mechanisms, and input/output validation.

Give security-focused coding challenges: Provide coding challenges focused on security to test the candidate's skills and knowledge. For example, ask them to implement a secure login system or a system that prevents SQL injection.

Check certifications: Check if the candidate has any security-specific certifications, such as the Certified Secure Software Lifecycle Professional (CSSLP) certification.

5. Ability to work in a fast-paced environment

Web3 startups are fast-paced and dynamic and work in these environments. Working in a startup environment requires grit, flexibility and stamina, and a software engineer should be able to work efficiently under tight deadlines and quickly adapt to changing requirements.

A proper understanding of your candidate's ability to work in a fast-paced environment is crucial to ensure they can handle the demands of the fast-growing nature of web3 startups and the industry.

Ask about their previous experience: During the interview, ask the candidate about their previous experience working in a fast-paced environment. Ask them to provide examples of situations where they have had to work under tight deadlines and high pressure.

Give scenario-based questions: Give the candidate scenario-based questions to assess their ability to work in a fast-paced environment. For example, ask them to describe a time when they had to quickly adapt to changing priorities or deal with an unexpected challenge.

Check their multitasking ability: Check the candidate's multitasking ability by asking them how they prioritize tasks and handle competing demands. You can also ask them how they handle interruptions and unexpected tasks while still meeting their goals.

Check their learning agility: Check the candidate's learning agility by asking them how they handle unfamiliar situations and how they learn new skills quickly.

Check their work style: Check the candidate's work style by asking them how they manage their time and how they organize their work. You can also ask them about their work-life balance and how they manage stress.

Check with references: Check the candidate's references and ask about their ability to work in a fast-paced environment. You can also ask for feedback on their ability to handle stress, prioritize tasks, and manage their workload.

By using a combination of strategies, you can validate a candidate's ability to work in a fast-paced environment and ensure they are a good fit for the role.

6. Communication skills

A software engineer should have strong communication skills, including the ability to clearly communicate technical concepts to both technical and non-technical team members.

It's important to evaluate a software engineer's communication skills to ensure they can effectively collaborate with team members, stakeholders, and clients. Validating these communication skills is crucial to ensure they can effectively collaborate and co-create within your company. Here are some strategies that can help:

Ask about their previous experience: During the interview, ask the candidate about their previous experience collaborating with team members, stakeholders, and clients. Ask them to provide examples of situations where they had to communicate complex technical concepts to non-technical stakeholders.

Give scenario-based questions: Give candidates scenario-based questions to assess their communication skills. For example, ask them to describe a time when they had to communicate a complex technical concept to a non-technical team member.

Check their writing ability: Confirm the candidate's writing ability by reviewing their documentation, such as technical reports or user manuals. Test for their level of proficiency in technical and non-technical writing. This will give you an idea of their ability to communicate technical concepts in a clear and concise manner.

Check their active listening skills: Confirm if a candidate is an active listener or not. Evaluate this skill by observing how they respond to questions during the interview. Do they ask clarifying questions? Do they paraphrase what you said to ensure they understand your point of view?

Check their presentation skills: Evaluate a candidate's presentation skills by asking them to give a technical presentation. Watch for specifics. This will help you assess their ability to communicate technical concepts to a non-technical audience.

Check references: Check the candidate's references and ask about their communication skills. You can also ask for feedback on their ability to collaborate with team members, stakeholders, and clients.

7. Passion for the technology, industry, and your startup

Your candidate’s assessment isn’t complete if you miss this. It is necessary to look for candidates who have a passion for web3, as well as your startup, and who are interested in the potential of Web3 to transform industries and drive innovation. Validating a job candidate's passion for web3 is important because it fuels their drive to work and ensures they are motivated and enthusiastic about the work they will be doing.

Here are some strategies that can help you find passionate candidates:

Ask about their previous experience: During the interview, ask the candidate specific questions about their previous experience working in web3. Also, give them the opportunity to describe the projects they worked on and their level of enthusiasm for the work.

Give scenario-based questions: Feed candidates scenario-based questions to assess their passion for web3 technology and the industry. For example, ask them to describe a situation where they were particularly excited about a project or technology.

Check their industry involvement: Check the candidate's involvement in the industry by asking them about their participation in web3-related events, conferences, or communities. You can also check their social media profiles to see if they follow or engage with industry leaders or publications. This should help you understand the degree to which they are involved in the space.

Check their personal projects: Check the candidate's personal projects, such as their GitHub or personal website, to see if they have any projects related to web3 technology or related industries. This strategy can give you an idea of their level of interest and motivation.

Ask their references: Consult with the candidate's references and ask about their passion for web3 technology and the industry. You can also ask for feedback on their level of enthusiasm and motivation for the work they do.

Overall, it's important to evaluate a job candidate's passion for web3 and your company to ensure they are motivated and enthusiastic about the work they will be doing.

Additionally, having experience in the web3 industry can be a plus for software engineers, but it's not always necessary nor are there always available talents with experience. A candidate's passion and interest in the industry can be just as important, and you can assess this through their level of enthusiasm and willingness to learn more about the industry. This can serve as selection criteria for candidates lacking enough experience.

Hire Top-Notch Web3 Talents with Kleoverse

Since Web3 is an emerging technology, the demand for Web3 developers continues to grow, but is still in short supply. Decide on the desired role

This is the first step to thoughtfully address within your startup to save capital and time.

To build the different products for your Web3 startup, you need to decide on the exact role a software engineer will play in your company. To do this you'd need to answer questions like:

What do you believe are the core team members needed on your Web3 project team?

What is your organization's operational strategy and how does it factor into the hiring process?

Below is an example of a well thought-out role and the organization's operational strategy in addition to its expectations from talents.

2. Identify the required skill sets

Identifying the main hard and soft skills you require from a software engineer working for you is a critical first step to ensuring your hiring and organization's success.

It is important that you tailor both hard and soft skills to fit the desired hiring role and organization's needs.

Firmly iterate on the soft skills developers need to succeed within the role and your startup. Some important soft skills for web3 developers are, communication, collaboration, and problem-solving skills, creative and analytical thinking, and understanding the essence of Agile methodology and Scrum project management approach.

3. Write a highly specific job description

The most important thing when you hire a Web3 developer is to write a clear and detailed job description. Your goal is to find the right person, so try to describe your company and project as accurately as possible.

An excellent template to follow is:

Describe your company and project

List the technologies you plan to use

Describe the candidate that will be a perfect fit for you, but make sure there are no biases

Add value, describing the perks and benefits your company can offer.

Below is an example of a software developer job ad that perfectly illustrates the points described above. It provides useful information about the company, covers the candidate’s responsibilities, describes the perfect candidate for the role, lists the tools and technologies they should be skilled with, and provides the benefits the company offers.

4. These series of questions should be crafted accurately to verify your candidate’s knowledge of Web3 and the operations of your company.

After evaluating their knowledge, you want to test their work experience with a test task. The test task should be related to the job/responsibilities they’re applying for so that you can evaluate their proficiency after joining the project. Also, it should be a simple task that doesn't take much time – for example, you can ask your candidates to code a simple smart contract.

Some examples of web3 interview questions for software developers include:

How do you understand Web3 and what’s the difference between Web1 and Web2?

What’s the difference between fungible & non-fungible tokens?

What are the differences between L1 & L2 blockchain networks?

What is the blockchain trilemma?

Can you explain what smart contracts are?

Why do you think Ethereum will be successful?

How do you see Web3 development changing in the next five years?

What is the most difficult part of Web3 development for you?

Explain Ethereum Virtual Machine

What is the function of the consensus algorithm?

What is the first item you need to define when creating a solidity file?

Hire Top-Notch Web3 Talents with Kleoverse

Full-time Web3 developer salaries tend to start in the six-figure territory, as companies are increasingly moving into this new space and scrambling to secure top talents.

Web3 organizations and projects generally expect their open positions to be filled by top-tier well-versed engineers who not only understand the web3 ecosystem but are well-established and positioned to play long-term.

Before you apply for your first role, here are some things to put in place:

1. Define your ideal role

Before embarking on your job search as a web3 engineer, it's important to take some time to reflect on your ideal role. This will help you identify the type of company, culture, technologies, programming languages, and other factors that are important to you.

When defining your dream role, some questions you should ask yourself include:

What type of company or project do I want to work for? (startup, established company, NFT projects, DeFi projects, DAOs, non-profit, etc.)

What is the company culture like? (remote-friendly, collaborative, agile, etc.)

What technologies and programming languages do I want to work with? (Solidity, JavaScript, Python, etc.)

What type of projects am I interested in working on? (smart contracts, decentralized applications, NFTs, etc.)

What is my ideal role? (backend developer, frontend developer, full-stack developer, etc.)

By clearly defining your dream role, you'll be better equipped to target your job search and find a position that aligns with your goals and interests.

2. Build your network

In the competitive world of Web3, professional networking is your competitive advantage.

Building a strong network can be the key to staying one step ahead of the crowd, getting in front of hiring managers, and landing your dream Web3 job.

Participating in industry events, joining online communities, and connecting with others on social media are the most common ways to expand your network and make valuable connections in the Web3 industry.

Industry events provide a great opportunity to meet other professionals in the field, learn about the latest trends and technologies, and showcase your own skills and expertise. For example, the Ethereum Community Conference (EthCC) is a popular event in the Web3 space that brings together developers, researchers, and enthusiasts from around the world. Attending events like this provides networking opportunities with other like-minded individuals and potentially positions you to even meet recruiters from top Web3 companies.

Joining online web3 developer communities and forums like Web3 Academy, Web3 Afrika, Cosensys, etc, provides great opportunities for networking. These communities provide a platform for developers and enthusiasts to share ideas, ask questions, and collaborate on projects.

Also, social media can be a powerful tool for building your network and connecting with other Engineers in the web3 space. Twitter, in particular, is the go-to platform for developers, investors, and web3 enthusiasts to share news and ideas. Following thought leaders in web3 and participating in relevant conversations and events can help expand your reach and potentially make valuable connections.

3. Create an impressive portfolio

As a web3 developer, having a strong portfolio is crucial. This will showcase your skills and provide potential employers with an idea of what you can do. Ensure that your portfolio highlights your experience and showcases your projects.

Creating an impressive portfolio remains one of the best ways to demonstrate your skills and experience as a web3 software engineer.

A portfolio can showcase your past projects, highlight your contributions to open-source projects, and even include your decentralized applications. Building an impressive software developer portfolio is important for both professionals and those starting a new career. Your portfolio provides:

Increased visibility and credibility

Proof of skill

A body of work for landing your first job or subsequent jobs

Showcase your expertise of a field

Improves your personal branding

Helps you stand out

Kleoverse, the go-to web3 talent platform, provides Web3 Software Engineers a platform to verify their skills and build a web3 portfolio on-chain. Remember that your portfolio is a representation of your skills and experience, so make sure it's well-organized and easy to navigate.

4.

Web3 encompasses a wide range of decentralized applications, including cryptocurrencies, non-fungible tokens (NFTs), decentralized finance (DeFi) applications, decentralized social networks, and decentralized file storage platforms.

As the adoption of Web3 continues to grow, so does the demand for skilled software engineers who can build and maintain decentralized applications. Kleoverse, for example, at the time of writing has published 93 Software Engineering related roles.

However, there is a range of perspectives on what Web3 entails. Some engineers see it as an exciting new paradigm for software development that can enable greater transparency, security, and community-driven innovation. Others may view it as an opportunity to make a quick profit through speculative investments. This presents a unique opportunity for ambitious software developers who are genuinely interested in contributing to this emerging space to stand out from the crowd.

By following these tips, you'll be better equipped to land your dream job as a software engineer in Web3 and contribute to this exciting and rapidly evolving field.

In the related posts, we provide a comprehensive guide on how to become a web3 developer in 2023. We will address the following topics:

What is web3 development and types of web3 developers

The web3 developer roadmap

How to become a certified web3 developer

The web3 developer career landscape

How to land a job as a web3 developer

Importance of becoming a web3 developer

Who is a Web3 Software Engineer, anyway?

Web3 software engineers are professionals that specialize in designing, developing, and maintaining decentralized applications, smart contracts, and other applications that run on the blockchain.

It is expected of a Software Engineer working in web3 to possess a deep understanding of blockchain technology and the underlying protocols and tech stack that power the decentralized web.

Web3 Software Engineers may have experience working with various programming languages:

Solidity,

JavaScript,

Python,

Rust, etc.

In addition, a Web3 Software Engineer is expected to have a thorough understanding of decentralized networks, consensus algorithms, cryptography, and other key concepts in the blockchain ecosystem.

How to Become a Web3 Software Engineer?

Becoming a web3 software engineer requires specific skills and knowledge, such as understanding how to write and deploy smart contracts, interacting with decentralized networks and web3 protocols, and working with decentralized storage solutions.

How you go about acquiring this knowledge is up to you depending on your learning style and preferences. Several learning resources ranging from online courses, bootcamps, workshops, or self-study are readily available for all.

The best place to start is the Ethereum and Solidity documentation, Nader Dabit recommends. Going through them will provide the fundamentals of understanding the most popular blockchain ecosystem and how to write a smart contract. The learning curve for Solidity isn’t too steep. Rust, a more general-purpose programming language, is also becoming widely used.

The Web3 developer stack is still immature, opaque, and unstructured, not to mention the Web3 frameworks and SDKs are still growing in numbers. Putting together all these tools and knowledge can be very daunting for new Web3 developers, and even painful for experienced devs.

Fortunately, there is a fast-growing range of structured Web3 tutorials and developer communities budding as the Web3 ecosystem grows. Courses from renowned learning institutions like Udemy and Coursera are easily accessible. Also, new and growing online learning communities like Web3 University, Alchemy University, ETHGlobal, and Buildspace are available to provide a community-focused learning experience for both new and experienced Web3 developers.

Conclusion

In conclusion, becoming a web3 developer is an exciting and promising career path as there is a growing demand for web3 developers across various blockchain industries like gaming, finance, education, social good, etc.

With the rapid growth of the web3 industry, there'll be an expansion of the web3 developer job market, and web3 talent platforms like Kleoverse can help you find the best web3 job opportunities.

Building a web3-native resume and verifying your skills with Proof-of-Talent on Kleoverse can also help you stand out in the competitive job market.

Also, ongoing education and training are crucial for staying up-to-date with the latest web3 development tools and trends. Kleoverse community is a good place to start connecting with web3 developers and sourcing up-to-date information.

Overall, the world of web3 development offers endless opportunities for growth, innovation, and impact. By following the steps outlined in this article, you can embark on an exciting and rewarding career as a web3 developer and land your first crypto job in 2023.

Ready to prove your Talent?

Kleoverse was created for web3 developers and other professionals to find web3 jobs and bounties, and it includes everything a web3 organization or project needs to maximize its company's growth.

Kleoverse acts as a curation layer for web3 talents and web3 organizations to showcase their talents and hire web3 professionals respectively. It empowers people to build their professional reputation and web3 resumes by aggregating achievements that are verified with on-chain and off-chain records.

Users can create Skill Scores with the help of Proof-of-Talent: the protocol aggregates achievements, assigns weights for them, and calculates skill-specific scores that can be minted as non-transferrable NFTs. The level of skill is determined by the quality and quantity of achievements and is represented by the number of tokens.

To calculate Skill Scores, we have issued +100 other Proof-of-Talent badges that represent various achievements. The protocol reads data from GitHub and Stack Overflow and stores verified records of one’s work on Polygon. Users can mint non-transferrable NFTs (”soulbound tokens”) based on successful attestations and use them to prove individual achievements and as the basis of Skill Scores.

How does Proof-of-Talent measure skills?

Skill Scores

Proof-of-Talent protocol combines and assigns weights to achievements from GitHub, Stack Overflow, and various on-chain data sources. Skill Scores represent skills based on these verified achievements, showcased by skill tokens (Polygon-based non-transferrable NFTs).

We have separated achievements into 4 categories – Activities, Courses, Contributions, and Shipping. Each category has a different weight that’s assigned for its achievements. Skill Scores are calculated as a weighted sum of all achievements a person has, applying category-specific weights. A user can mint as many NFTs as their score is.

Skill Scores measure both the quality and the quantity of development achievements. Category-based weights assign exponentially increasing importance to achievements that require more skill. The more you have these achievements, the deeper experience you have with the respective technology, leading to a higher Skill Score.

Currently we have issued 4 Skill Scores: Solidity, Rust, Python, and TypeScript development. We will issue new Skill Scores during 2023, looking also for expanding from development to other areas of expertise. Check out all Skill Scores here.

Achievements

Achievements showcase valuable projects or contributions with badges. They store data from off-chain sources to blockchain and represent them with non-transferrable NFTs.

By December 2022, we have issued +100 different Proof-of-Talent badges for development achievements in various categories. To create a badge, our smart contracts check whether certain actions have happened; store proof of that on another smart contract; and enable the user to mint Polygon-based badges to visualize their achievements in their web3 resume. For technical details, check out our docs.

Today, we support GitHub and Stack Overflow-based achievements. Achievement categories are:

GitHub Stargazer: Level-based badges to showcase the cumulative number of GitHub stars in the user’s repositories

Organization Contributor: Open-source contributions to certain organizations’ public repositories with at least 1 successfully merged pull request

Project Contributor: Similar to Organization Contributor, but for contributions to certain reputable open-source projects

Builder, Contributor, and Reputable Contributor: Language-based badges, showcasing the creation of repositories, contribution to public repositories, or contribution to public repositories with at least 5 GitHub stars (respectively) using a specific technology

Stack Overflow Knowledge: Level-based badges for language-specific reputation in Stack Overflow

Courses: Completion of certain development courses, provided by reputable web3 projects

We will implement more achievement badges to additional categories in the future, looking also for adding new off-chain data sources for badges. Check out all badges here.

How can I use Proof-of-Talent for hiring?

Proof-of-Talent can be used as a talent measurement system to evaluate skills when hiring developers for web3 jobs.

Proof-of-Talent verifies all relevant developer achievements and combines them for Skill Scores.

Today, we at Kleoverse are launching Proof-of-Talent to the Polygon mainnet. Proof-of-Talent is a modular protocol for measuring talent and showcasing personal achievements with on and off-chain records. Builders can mint non-transferrable badges (Soulbound Tokens, SBTs) for their skills, previous projects, and open-source contributions; with these on-chain credentials, Kleoverse helps them build web3 portfolios and find their next opportunities.

This launch is a major step in the journey of building web3-native professional identities. We envision a world where all builders can verify their skills with previous work and its results, enabling equal access to working opportunities across the decentralized web. We’re building Proof-of-Talent to be a core component of this future.

Talent signaling with traditional status symbols is broken

We believe existing methods for talent evaluation are insufficient for modern online-based work. People are typically measured based on status symbols like education diplomas, job titles, and previous employers’ reputations instead of their actual skills and willingness to learn. As a result, hiring happens within exclusive inner circles, omitting people outside of them regardless of their capabilities.

Organizations across fields repeatedly mention access to talent as one of their fundamental challenges. Common solutions include even more intensive reliance on personal networks as well as recruitment budget increases, leading to a rising amount of cold contacting, spammy in-mails, and paying unnecessarily high premiums for headhunters.

These problems are common across industries, and also apply to the web3 community. Professional identity and reputation haven’t sparked general interest – even the recent discussion about decentralized identity and on-chain reputation has lacked talent measurement and signaling considerations. There haven’t been reliable ways of verifying skills with on-chain data, let alone leveraging this data in hiring. As a result, most web3 companies and DAOs still rely mainly on web2-native talent discovery methods. Costs are huge – not only in terms of wasted time and money but also in non-optimal recruitment decisions.

Professional identity but designed for the web

We believe professional identity is built on a person’s achievements and referrals. They represent different sides of oneself, being specific to varying contexts and people involved. Achievements, referrals, and other credentials are attached to identity – a person’s reputation is formed as a subjective evaluation of them.

While focusing solely on the professional context, we believe that identity has multiple characteristics. Fundamentally, achievements should not represent only one side of a person but a multitude of them, ranging from passions and hobbies via education and tutorials completed to open-source contributions and full-time employment. Neither your identity should be tied to a single source – like an individual wallet, let alone a traditional, linear CV.

With the Proof-of-Talent protocol, we are presenting a new primitive for professional identity based on blockchain-verified skills and recorded achievements. We display the diversity of internet-age careers by capturing signals from a multitude of sources and encouraging developers to build new attesters to diversify the solution further. Relying on SBTs, we enforce trust by verifying data on-chain and making it inherently public. In addition, we allow users to map multiple wallet addresses to their identity and comprehensively represent their contributions and achievements throughout the decentralized web.

Proof-of-Talent protocol: Verify Skills and record Achievements on-chain

To make talent measurement more objective and transparent, as well as to build a new primitive for professional identity, we present the Proof-of-Talent protocol. It records contributions and achievements to a trustless environment, blockchain, in a form of on-chain Badges, mainly SBTs.

The Proof-of-Talent protocol is deployed on Polygon. One of its core smart contracts, the modular Attestation Protocol, was initially developed by Sismo.io.

Skills

The main component of each person’s Proof-of-Talent is Skills. Each Skill is constructed from various Achievements and represented as a single score to display the level of talent.

Achievements contribute to the user’s Skill Score with varying weights, depending on the Skill and the type of Achievement. Each Skill is calculated with a specific formula, unique for each skill.

Essentially, Skill Scores measure the person’s Achievements in certain areas of expertise, giving a brief and actionable overview of one’s verified experience. They can be used for building portfolios, filtering based on skill levels, gating access to services and working opportunities, and many other applications. They are also the core part of Kleoverse Portfolios to enable more accurate and efficient hiring decisions.

Achievements

Proof-of-Talent protocol lets anyone record on-chain proofs for their valuable Achievements with custom-made smart contracts. Multiple different Achievements can be recorded:

Previous projects

Open-source contributions (bridged on-chain with custom-made attestations)

Educational courses

Attendance at reputable events and organizations (like hackathons or DAOs)

Referrals

Other verifiable signals of valuable work

Achievements create a verified record of one’s working history, stored in the person’s wallet. Furthermore, they are mapped to Skill Scores for actionability and hierarchy, as well as for measuring the level of talent they represent.

We prioritize on-chain Achievements, and they have a primary weight on Skill Scores. However, to bootstrap the Skill Scores and create a comprehensive picture of one’s expertise, we have built custom-made smart contracts for bridging off-chain achievements to the blockchain. This enables builders to record e.g. their GitHub-based open-source contributions as on-chain Achievements, contributing to their Skill Scores.

Badges

Each Achievement and Skill is showcased with SBT-based Badges. They can be minted and stored in the user’s wallet, letting people fully own their reputation. Badges are non-transferable, enforcing trust in the identities they are representing.

Badges can be used for building portfolios, achievement-gating access in organizations and services, dividing work for people with certain skill levels, and for multiple other applications.

Hire builders with Proof-of-Talent

Kleoverse is the first product built on top of the Proof-of-Talent protocol. We are developing the platform of work in web3 to enable leading companies, DAOs, and other organizations to find high-quality builders for their projects.

Organizations and recruiters can use the protocol’s Skill Scores to validate candidates anonymously in an objective and transparent way. Leveraging on-chain recorded Achievements, we have designed a portfolio specifically for developers and other web3 builders. It represents their relevant working history actionably, based on blockchain-verified Badges.

By relying on blockchain-verified data, our goal is to solve the main problem of talent signaling today: inaccurate talent measurement that overlooks skilled builders across the globe. Regardless of how talented they are within their area of expertise, if builders lack networks or traditional status signals, they face difficulties in finding suitable opportunities. We help them prove their talent with an internet-native professional identity, and enable organizations to tap into this talent pool.

Ultimately, we believe this results in better hiring decisions and more accurate matches between organizations and candidates.

Going forward

We are building Kleoverse and Proof-of-Talent for revolutionizing talent measurement, signaling, and discovery on the web. We want to see a world in which working opportunities are divided purely based on verified skills, not networks or status signals – Proof-of-Talent is designed to become a core component of decentralized professional identities enabling this future.

While we want to develop Kleoverse to become the leading platform for web3 work, the core principle of the Proof-of-Talent protocol is to be modular and community-led. We want to encourage custom solutions to be built on top of it by providing a convenient API, SDK, and a subgraph. We would love to see Skills and Achievements used broadly across the decentralized web in various applications for talent measurement, skill-gating access, or for many other use cases. If you want to use Proof-of-Talent in your project, reach out to us at Discord!

Also, our aim is to ensure Proof-of-Talent always represents Skills in a widely accepted way. In particular, we want to ensure mapped Achievements display one’s Skills accurately, with carefully defined and community-approved weights. Kleoverse Core Team remains in charge of the protocol governance for the time being, but our goal is to start progressive decentralization of the protocol from Skill mapping.

We encourage everyone to start recording their Skills and Achievements on-chain to build their Web3 Portfolio – all feedback is highly appreciated via Discord!
