Having curated music and DJ’d for a bunch of experiences over the past 10 years from fashion shows to nightlife, meditations to wellness retreats, yoga flows to embodiment practices I am sharing my 5 S’s to consider for intentionally curating the sound for your next event, workshop, retreat or meditation.

The 5 S’s of Sonic Curation:

Setting: What is the setting of your event? What is the ambiance? Who are the guests? What is the size of the space? Do you see live music, a playlist, a sound experience, a live DJ, performances, panel discussions, spoken word in this space? Where do you see yourself placing the source of the sound in the space? How many rooms? How many vibes? What time of day or night is the event taking place? Is there a sunset or sunrise happening during your event? Is it indoors or outdoors?

Sequencing: How is the event sequenced? Are you trying to tell a story or create an arch? Do you want ambient background music, to build up the energy or take listeners on a journey? Lyrics or no lyrics? Tempo?

Senses: What are the smells? What are the colors? What are the textures? What is the lighting like? What senses are you wanting to inspire or invoke? How do you want guests to feel?

Sound System: Do you need a sound system? Does the venue have a sound system? What speakers do you have? What are the acoustics in the space? Where is the sound system located in the space (if provided)? Where would you like the speakers placed? Do you need microphones? What kind of microphones? What is the noise ordinance for the venue?

Soul: Make it soulful. Go deep with intention. Create a sonic theme that aligns with your theme for the event, workshop or meditation to create a truly cohesive and immersive experience. Select only music or sounds that resonate with this theme.

Finding and sharing your unique sonic style for events introduces attendees into new dimensions of sound and vibration which allows us to grow our spectrum of sound and not just loop what’s on the pop charts or radio. Thoughtful and creative sonic selections can also encourage communication between strangers and cross-pollination of cultures.

How we feel in a space is usually determined by how it sounds. It is the most memorable aspect of any experience, embedded on a cellular level, entraining our blood and our brainwaves, and yet surprisingly sound is usually the afterthought by most event organizers. By taking into consideration the 5 S’s above you can make your events truly intentional and unforgettable.

If you found this helpful, @ me on Twitter or Insta :)

(especially after going grocery shopping at Trader Joe’s)?

Do you remember how an event makes you feel?

Do you find yourself constantly exploring and experimenting with sound?

If you’re a human with a beating heart and oscillating breath, it’s likely you’ve answered yes to at least one of the above questions…

We are the #SonicCurationGeneration…

“Sonic Curation” is a term I’ve been using since 2012 when I began DJing and curating playlists for various events and experiences. Sonic Curation communicates an intentional vibe to your audience via thoughtfully chosen sound waves for ambiance, timing and sequencing.

Recognizing the power of sound to influence the subconscious mind, sonic curation is a holistic approach to selecting the sonic components of your event or experience. Whether it’s booking the DJ’s, sound artists and live music acts or sequencing a playlist for your yoga class, sonic curation allows us to become more aware of the influence and power sound has on the listener’s psyche. This also places a greater emphasis on the responsibility of the event organizers, music directors and DJ’s to approach their work with a deeper reverence for the power that it holds.

Because music is an immersive tool for communication, education and retention it is of great importance that we normalize this thoughtfulness into how we book for and design our immersions and experiences. With virtual realities on the rise and experiential marketing as the go-to for brands there can definitely be even more depth of thought and consideration into what exactly the subliminal messaging is that we are consuming as attendees and selling/influencing as those being hired to put on the various aspects of these events, activations and immersions.

Because sound embeds into the mind and literally vibrates the cells of all that are participating, sonic curation encourages more thoughtfulness and holistic considerations when throwing parties and planning events, workshops and retreats.

If you’re an experiential marketer or retreat planner, what are your thoughts/feels for sonic curation? How do your event organizers and coordinators curate the sounds for your events?

Did any of this resonate with you? @ me on Twitter or Insta :) and check out my 5 S’s for Sonic Curation HERE.

I believe we are smack-dab in the middle of defining this. The focus here is not just on the audio/visual art of NFTs but the simple necessity for sharing music and the protocols we are building in #web3 to do so. The nature of sound/audio itself as a fluid and valuable currency (read: energy current) that passes between listeners in an unseen way, this is the Economy of Sound.

“We are the source of value.” ~ Niran Babalola,

DMSTs

Why DMST and not DMSS (Decentralized Music Streaming Service)? Personally I am seeing various technologies as tools in the space right now for collecting, organizing, playing and getting compensated for music. The service being provided is by the artists and musicians. The software or app is a tool to gain access to the services they’re providing. Is this arguable? Yes, but we’re gonna rock with it for simplicity sake. It is also worth noting that not all platforms being reviewed are for streaming, some have features that would be cool to integrate into a streaming tool but as I do more research I realize I am patch working some very specific features together here and not one project has combined it all in the ways I am looking for on web3. And in this process I am discovering that one does not need to. The need is more so the capability to easily curate (aesthetically customizable) environments with plugged-in features for ourselves.

“Even if we do not yet grasp the full applications and implications, the sheer number of ideas and initiatives sparked by the core idea itself is encouraging, and gives us a glimpse at the limitless potential of our minds - we are architecting and co-creating our own future ‘reality’.” ~ KERNEL

THINKING DIFFERENTLY…

“Stop thinking of computers as a screen into which you type things from a keyboard. Start seeing the world itself as an infinitely programmable playground, access to which only requires a few magical words anyone, anywhere can create when they learn the basics of a new order of language.” ~ Intro to KERNEL

The quote above is pulled from a crypto course that allows us to expand our minds to the potentials and infinite possibilities of this new language from a programming perspective. Below, the quote from Vitalik regarding the thinking behind the genesis of Ethereum protocol, lays the foundation for how to best approach these reviews. There is no navigating the terrain of web3 without knowing what’s up with Ethereum first...

"Instead of having a protocol that is designed around one very small set of use cases, you just create a general-purpose operating system and you let people build whatever they want as applications on top of it."

These reviews are a snapshot of my current observations of this landscape at this very moment. The technologies, communities, current platforms, protocols and potentials for reconfigurations to come together in modular and unique ways is exciting and will surely be evolving quickly as more and more artists and developers recognize the capabilities of tracking value for art in alternative manners.

Check out this Fireside chat from KERNEL with Niran Babalola, founder of Panvala, with regards to how communities can come together to diversify the directions in which we utilize the web3 technologies and channel our energies more efficiently while moving away from the narratives that the technology is determining how we direct our communities.

Below I give a brief summary, little bit on tech, pros and cons and my closing thoughts/notes for each that I have come across or have been recommended to check out thus far. These are NOT exhaustive reviews, they are my surface level observations of the UX/UI, features and the little bit I know about each brand. I’ve kept in my thoughts/notes as I went through each platform some of the questions that initially came to mind. Some of these questions were then later answered by another project, 2.0 development or integration. This is my raw process as I start to swim through the sound waves of web3. I’ve also learned a ton through this process and the evolution of thought, vocabulary and possibilities naturally grows and adapts to this throughout these reviews. I was just getting my feet wet in web3 at the beginning of this process. I am now fully immersed.

In this post I’ll be reviewing Audius, Sound, YouSound, Catalog, Opus, Rug Radio and BPM 2.0.

https://twitter.com/kyma/status/1480425451164094464?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw%7Ctwcamp%5Etweetembed%7Ctwterm%5E1480425451164094464%7Ctwgr%5E%7Ctwcon%5Es1_&ref_url=https%3A%2F%2Fmirror.xyz%2F0xd1348Edc181C989DC5abe4d6Aba9d20ECee176Ad%2FCQ1YxzO2g2lilFwgtYWOABc8OUMGSRSmdaQDBJtKGk4

Special shout out @feelosopher777 for sparking the inspiration for this on my original Tweet. Is there a way to simplify UX/UI designs, drag and drop capabilities for the non-technical - non-gamer humans to begin curating the aesthetics of our own listening environments?

ONBOARDING ARTISTS TO WEB3

Worth mentioning here is HiFi Labs which is going to be a go-to for the artists and artist development in getting onboarded to the various web3 spaces that are on the rise and on the horizon in an attempt to close the tech barrier to entry…

https://www.hifilabs.co/

The above tools, brands and services offer unique insight into the areas in which we are evolving as music lovers and makers. In this research I have clarified the dynamic features I am particularly looking for in a dashboard or localized app tool that offers:

Simple plug and play

Access to a huge library of audio (music, podcasts and even DJ mixes) with easy searching in database for artists I know and love

Easy organization and sharing that music as collections or playlists

As a listener I want to decide which artists I want to back with $ to have part-stake in their future success and I also want my casual streaming to first and foremost benefit the artists who’ve created this music as well as the communities and curators that are supporting that artist in building awareness for that music.

To “own” or back a portion of the audio as a fan, in streaming, is where this space is exciting. To back an artist early and continue to drive their success, while also getting supported in doing so to reinvest in future projects or reinvest in other artists feels like a really incredible possibility here.

I am unsure how the math or smart contracts will look for this or if there needs to be a cap for how many supporters/sponsors the audio should/could have but this returns the agency back to the artists to determine this for themselves upon upload.

KYMXÅ WISHLIST 2.0

CONCLUSION:

Copyright, ASCAP, BMI, all of this publishing is up for reinterpretation. As creators and music makers we must keep these new possibilities in mind. Innovations are ripe and it is not a race. We are not competing in this space. The environments that are being cultivated across the board in web3 are collaborative and complementary. Let’s keep it that way by contributing our unique ideas to the greater good of all involved and build off the things that currently work.

Access to a robust database of music, remixes, mixes and podcasts is personally the most important to me. In this web3 world I want to trust that the files I am streaming are being tracked and paying back all involved as set up in their smart contract. A, dare I say, centralized space or hub that all NFT collections are indexed or searchable to add to a playlist interface for listening.

There are systems and protocols that do work in the current designs. I don’t see the future of streaming as a central “platform” anymore. Languaging is slowly shifting to represent what this next evolution will be. I am most curious to see modularity and customizable capabilities to integrate into a sort of blank canvas space. Each team of devs contributing new plug-ins, protocols and features that can be adopted into your own personal environment via drop and drop while being able to access the music or audio NFT databases of your choice. Something The Graph is a helpful resource for. For design and organization, an interface created with a sort of customized builder along the conceptual lines of the Universe Web Builder App for creating our own app/landing pages for listening.

A mixing and meshing, a fluidity of digital music loving communities.

Music is the uniting force. Let’s see what we can create with open-source.

What ideas or wishlist features do you have for a DMST?

@ me on Twitter, let’s jam on it and circle back for round 2 of reviews coming soOn…

((( 💗 )))

Twitter: @kyma Insta: @kymxa

Many puzzled looks later, here we are, about to quite literally morph the music industry into a decentralized Economy (and Ecosystem) of Sound, collectively in web3, all of us, together. (Highly recommend listening to the below convo from 2018/2019).

https://www.aquariantransmissions.com/practices/2020/1/27/economy-of-sound-convo-with-propheta-kym

This topic is major for me as DJ and sonic curator. Sharing music is like the air I breathe. To finally have the ability to track and value the sharing of music is important. VERY IMPORTANT. We are the #SonicCuration Generation after all. Being able to do this in a holistic way that supports and values the artists and the listeners is exciting AF! The future of #web3music is going to take some research to see where we are in this space right now and the various directions we could be heading.

It is common knowledge that the backend of the music industry is antiquated and has some catching up to do (to say the least). The small percentage of royalties paid out to artists by centralized streaming services and the fact that it has been normalized that most large record labels are known to exploit their artists’ success without taking into consideration the mental, physical or financial health of their teams is crazy and I do not use that term lightly. It is an “industry” after all - an environment designed to manufacture. But we all know music is more than something that can be produced or manufactured.

Music is harmony. Music is melody. Music is soul. It is not a product to be “manufactured” through an industry. What we are doing now is removing the influence of the industry on the creation of music. And again that is exciting AF! There is a reverence with which we can begin approaching and valuing ourselves, our music and our support in #web3. For artists, these next moves will be determined by their autonomy and contractual obligations with their labels. We are in the grey area and why it is so important to remain independent and own your masters at this time, to keep your SONIC SOVEREIGNTY and do as you wish with your sound. To understand this, a mindset shift might be in order.

Bobby Hundreds Q&A and response to “What is the TLDR of this shit? Idk what any of it means!!!” is a gem to preface where we’re about to go with this all…

https://twitter.com/TheTrueAbstract/status/1481183109299200000?s=20

So what does this mean for music?

Because finding new music, producing it, organizing it and sharing is my specialty and I spend so much of my time and energy in this space, I’m reviewing the platforms I come across for alternative options I’ve found in the world of Decentralized Music Streaming Tools (which I will now refer to as DMST, not to be confused with DMT). I’ll be documenting this journey as I search for the next options and imaginings in rotation. The protocols, platforms and plug-ins. Some things I’ll be looking for from these tools are…

Ease of social sharing

Direct access to uploading music to platform as artist

Direct and timely payouts

Easily customizable smart contract templates

Merch marketplaces

Playlisting

Social capabilities, messaging, see what others are listening to etc.

Innovative curation capabilities

No-code, low-code - Modular UX/UI designs

DJ mix and podcast streaming capabiliites

AI auto-suggestions/algorithmic reccommendations

Interoperability for royalty tracking and payouts

EQ capabilities for sound quality

Free to use, options to invest in protocol with token

NOW LISTENING TO:

https://open.spotify.com/episode/1HXeyEEXm2CIvDkvUMxDBH?si=cb70be4bab284094&nd=1

That’s a wrap... for now…

Because we’ve been used to having access to enormous libraries of music immediately, there does need to be some context and patience in these beta spaces I realize (note to self). It also appears we are moving away from standardization which may or may not lead to inconsistent sound quality (ie: Soundcloud - which did also end up generating a new wave with the “LowFi” genre). Quality control will likely be determined by the curators for each database of music collections, whether it’s a free for all upload or thoughtfully refined and curated library of music - ie: the new record label. We’ll see what the options are…

It’s important to keep in mind that we are building this new world together from the ground up. What do we want it to look like and sound like? What terms are we taking into consideration in our smart contracts? If we are setting our own standards, how do we not sell ourselves short while coming together as a community to support each others creativity and generosity?

@ me on Twitter and let me know what features you’d like to see in your DMST. Share your wishlist features and let’s press play on these ideas!

Find your vibe…

Currently testing a variety of platforms and protocols.
