Linea, a layer-2 solution developed by ConsenSys, has proposed a shift towards decentralization through the implementation of a Proof-of-Stake (PoS) model. The detailed plan, introduced by software architect Florian Huc, outlines a transition from its current zkEVM system, which relies on intermediaries, to a fully permissionless and decentralized system.

1. Switch to Proof-of-Stake (PoS):

   • Validators will stake tokens and participate in consensus using the QBFT (Practical Byzantine Fault Tolerance) algorithm.

   • Misbehaving validators will face slashing penalties, where a portion of their staked tokens is burned.

2. On-Chain Block Proposal Auctions:

   • Any node can participate in an auction to become a block proposer.

   • The highest bidder wins the right to propose a block, with the winning bid being burned to create a deflationary effect on the token.

3. Recovery Mode for Network Stability:

   • If all validators go offline or fail to act for six months, any node (not just validators) can restart the finalization process.

   • In such cases, Linea will operate like a base rollup, with nodes taking over validator roles to maintain the network.

4. Reverse Auctions for Finalization:

   • Nodes will compete to finalize blocks on Ethereum layer-1 at the lowest possible cost.

   • If the winning node fails to finalize on time, other nodes can step in to complete the task and earn rewards.

The decentralization push follows a security incident at Velocore DEX that resulted in a $10 million loss and a temporary block production halt. This proposal aims to improve Linea’s resilience by enhancing block validation, proposing, and ensuring data immutability on both layer-2 and Ethereum’s layer-1.

With community support for the PoS model, Linea is taking critical steps toward decentralization. These changes will increase network transparency and stability, encouraging broader community participation in securing and maintaining the network’s integrity.
