30 years ago, the first hope primary school in Yunnan landed in Wuding

As most areas are mountainous areas, villages in Wuding county are scattered, and the transportation of students to school is inconvenient, ranging from a few kilometers to more than ten kilometers. The situation of “one teacher and one school” is very common here, and teaching and learning are very difficult. This is not only the problem that Wuding County once faced, but also the epitome of education in poor mountainous areas of Yunnan in the past.

“At that time, the school was built on a depression in the village, surrounded by mountains. I said it couldn’t work. I had to move to a higher place.” Bi Huiyuan, who began to serve as the principal of the Central Primary School in Chadian Township, Wuding County in 1988, hopes that the school environment can be improved and children can have better learning conditions.

In late August 1990, the Central Committee of the Communist Youth League, the China Youth Foundation and the Yunnan Provincial Committee of the Communist Youth League visited Yunnan Province to find schools suitable for the implementation of the hope project. On August 24, Bi Huiyuan, who was attending school, met the delegation. Because it is an old revolutionary base area and an area inhabited by ethnic minorities, and it is close to the highway to facilitate material transportation, the delegation decided to select the first hope primary school in Yunnan as the Central Primary School in Chadian Township, Wuding county.

In 1991, the hope primary school in Wuding county was completed and put into use. The new hope primary school is a brand-new three storey teaching building with 12 classrooms, which can accommodate 300 students. Bi Huiyuan became the first principal of hope primary school in Wuding county. He recorded the day when the school opened in his diary.

Over the past 30 years, the number of hope primary schools in Yunnan has increased from 1 to more than 2000

Over the past 30 years, great changes have taken place in the hope primary school in Wuding county. There are 648 students in the school, and the minority students account for 76%.

“Before going to hope primary school in Wuding County, I had been studying in the primary school in the village. There were only two classrooms in that school. It was a dangerous adobe house. I was lucky to be the first batch of students to enter hope primary school.” He Yucai returned to work in his hometown after graduation and is now the party secretary of Jiyi Township, Wuding county. In his view, if there was no hope project, his fate might be very different from now.

30 years later, new era standardization 3.0 hope primary school continues hope

While continuously promoting the “hope playground”, “hope kitchen”, “hope project library”, “Hope Project happy music classroom” and other auxiliary facilities projects to improve the music, sports and beauty of rural schools, the assistance mode of Yunnan hope project to hope primary school is also upgrading. From the initial “subsidy” mode of 1.0 aid for the construction of teaching buildings, to the “subsidy + development” mode of 2.0 aid for the construction of student dormitory buildings and complex buildings, and then to the new “subsidy + development + standardization” 3.0 mode widely implemented at this stage to improve the supporting ancillary facilities of rural schools, Yunnan hope project continues to promote the gradual transformation of rural teenagers from “learning” to “learning”.

It is reported that since 1990, Yunnan hope project has raised more than 1.1 billion yuan and widely carried out diversified public welfare projects such as student education, educational assistance, medical improvement, rural revitalization, ecological environmental protection and emergency rescue.

This year, Yunnan hope project raised more than 87 million yuan, funded 12946 primary and secondary school students, opened 7 new “hope high school classes”, assisted in the construction of 40 hope primary schools, 105 supporting projects for the upgrading of hope primary schools, 194 “hope playground”, trained more than 7500 Rural Teachers in seven phases, rescued 361 sick teenagers, and assisted in the construction of 22 hope clinics (hospitals), 13 hope toilets were built and 51 rural doctors were trained.
