Most Layer 1s fall into two extremes - a generic chain (Solana, Ether) at one end and an application-specific chain (dYdX, Osmosis) at the other. Sei blazes a whole new path between the two - neither generic nor application-specific, but rather use-case specific, which allows Sei to create an environment customized for DEX applications. By exploring the new design space between application chains and generic Layer 1, Sei has carefully selected a unique set of trade-offs that make its Layer 1 the optimal environment for DEX. Designed from the bottom up based on the needs of a decentralized exchange, Sei has made several optimizations to Layer 1 to give the exchange advantages: 1. Native order matching engine - drives scalability of order book DEX built on Sei 2. Preemption protection - fights malicious preemption transactions that are rampant in other ecosystems 3. Smart block propagation - improves latency and throughput 4. Sub-second settlement - Sei is the fastest chain at around 600 milliseconds The combination of these optimizations makes it possible for new types of financial products to emerge - everything from live sports betting to complex options and futures.</p><pre data-type="codeBlock" text=" The Sei Labs Team Sei Labs is comprised of three types of backgrounds: 1.
