Since its inception, over $1.5 trillion has been processed in notional value. Payment volumes grew 10x year-over-year in 2024.

BlackRock's BUIDL tokenized Treasury fund exceeded $2.5 billion in assets under management within 18 months of launch. It now operates across nine blockchains— Ethereum, Solana, Arbitrum, Avalanche, and others—and is accepted as trading collateral on Binance.

The Federal Reserve Bank of New York published research on tokenized funds as a new asset class. DTCC announced it will mint tokenized U.S. Treasuries on the Canton Network, targeting an MVP in the first half of 2026.

These are not pilots. These are production systems.

The Great Jurisdiction Race

The competition is not between blockchain protocols. It is between jurisdictions.

Singapore's MAS has been running Project Guardian since 2022 – tokenized bonds, deposits, and FX with JPMorgan, DBS, and Standard Chartered. Hong Kong completed its e-HKD Pilot Programme exploring tokenized deposits and programmable payments. The Swiss SIX Digital Exchange operates as the world's first fully regulated venue integrating digital assets with traditional securities infrastructure.

The SEC spent recent years litigating asset classification. The EU's MiCA provides a framework for crypto assets but creates friction around securities tokenization.

The jurisdiction that delivers regulatory clarity for fully on-chain securities listing will capture disproportionate capital flows. Singapore, Switzerland, and Hong Kong are positioned to move first. Dubai is building aggressively through DIFC and ADGM.

New York and London face structural disadvantages. Their regulatory frameworks were built to govern a specific architecture and changing that architecture requires legislative action that moves slowly.

The Regulatory Paradox

The current settlement infrastructure exists partly because regulators mandated it. Central clearing after 2008. T+2 requirements. Custody segregation rules. These created today's intermediated structure.

On-chain settlement turns this architecture on its head. A token representing a security can carry its ownership history, enforce compliance logic in code, and settle atomically against payment. Functions distributed across custodians, clearing houses, and settlement systems consolidate into smart contracts.

The BIS Innovation Hub demonstrated cross-border FX settlement using automated market makers through Project Mariana. Technical feasibility is confirmed.

The regulatory question is different: will supervisors approve systems where settlement finality occurs in seconds, where error correction requires protocol-level intervention rather than phone calls?

These are legitimate concerns. They are solvable engineering problems. Programmable circuit breakers exist. Delayed settlement for large transactions can be encoded at the protocol level.

What Happens to Intermediaries

Traditional infrastructure involves seven to twelve intermediaries between buyer and seller. Each adds latency, cost, and counterparty risk.

On-chain settlement does not eliminate intermediaries. It redefines what intermediation means.

When settlement is atomic and instant, clearing, or aggregating and netting trades, changes fundamentally. Delivery-versus-payment becomes a single operation. Custodians shift from holding assets to managing private keys and compliance workflows.

DTCC generated $2.49 billion in revenue in 2024 while providing custody for securities valued at $99 trillion. Global custodians will resist disruption. But BCG and ADDX project the tokenized asset market at $16 trillion by 2030.

BNY Mellon launched digital custody. State Street invested in tokenization platforms. The smart incumbents are repositioning.

What Comes Next

The transition will be faster than incumbents expect and slower than advocates promise.

Tokenized money market funds and bonds will scale significantly within three years; BlackRock's BUIDL trajectory demonstrates this. Equity will lag: there are more complex corporate actions and more regulatory touch points. Derivatives will move quickly once infrastructure supports it; margin and collateral management gains will be substantial.

Geography matters enormously. Capital flows toward regulatory clarity. Singapore, Switzerland, Hong Kong lead. The UAE invests heavily. The US and EU risk falling behind, not because regulators are incompetent, but because their structures adapt slowly.

Technology is no longer the constraint. Infrastructure capable of supporting institutional-grade capital markets exists. The winning networks will be those designed for regulatory adaptability from the ground up, networks capable of deploying private permissioned environments for one jurisdiction while maintaining public interoperability for another. This is the architecture we are building at Venom Foundation: infrastructure that can serve multiple regulatory regimes simultaneously without sacrificing throughput or finality. The constraints are regulatory clarity, institutional adoption cycles, and coordination problems inherent in replacing embedded systems.

The future of capital markets will be on-chain. The questions are where, when, and who leads.
