后来，高唐州知府高廉的妻舅殷天锡倚仗权势，欲夺取柴进叔父柴皇城的花园，还殴打柴皇城。柴进闻讯与李逵奔赴高唐州。

柴皇城气愤而死，柴进让人回沧州取丹书铁劵，打算到东京告御状。殷天锡却又前来滋事，还殴骂柴进，结果被李逵打死。柴进忙让李逵离开，自己却被高廉拘捕，屈打成招后打入死牢。

宋江听闻柴进陷狱，发兵攻打高唐州。

当牢节级蔺仁钦佩柴进，将他藏在牢后的枯井之中，向高廉报称柴进已死。高廉因战事也无暇顾及。梁山军攻破高唐州后，李逵深入枯井，将柴进救出。柴进从此便到梁山入伙。
