Methanol vehicle refers to the vehicle with methanol as fuel. As methanol is a low-carbon and oxygenated fuel, which has the characteristics of high combustion efficiency, clean emission and regeneration, and is liquid at room temperature and pressure, it is safer and more convenient to store, transport and use than other new and clean energy. It has become a new clean and green energy recognized by the industry. It is understood that compared with traditional gasoline vehicles, methanol vehicles improve energy efficiency by about 21% and reduce carbon dioxide emissions by about 26%. Li Shufu pointed out in the proposal that at the production end, the coupling of modern coal to methanol technology and renewable energy to green hydrogen and green oxygen technology can realize zero emission in the methanol production process, while the “electric methanol” produced by hydrogen production from renewable energy electrolytic water and CO2 capture, as well as the biomass methanol produced from straw and municipal waste, belong to green renewable methanol. The application of this renewable methanol can achieve carbon balance.

It is precisely because methanol can achieve carbon balance at the production end and the emission of methanol vehicles is relatively clean. Therefore, Li Shufu suggested that methanol vehicles should be comprehensively promoted and applied in China. At the same time, methanol vehicles should be included in the development system and management scope of new energy vehicles, and methanol vehicles should be given the same policy support as new energy vehicles, so as to drive more enterprises to invest in the research and development of methanol vehicles.

Promote the integration of new energy vehicles into the management of “carbon trading”

At this stage, one of the effective measures recognized by the industry to reduce carbon in the automobile industry is to increase the substitution effect of new energy vehicles on traditional fuel vehicles. This measure can effectively improve the carbon emission of automobile use. Relevant data show that compared with fuel vehicles, new energy passenger vehicles reduce carbon emissions by about 15 million tons every year.

However, due to the low carbon emissions generated by automobile manufacturing, it has not been included in the key industries of carbon emission management at present. It is understood that the state has included power generation, petrochemical, iron and steel, nonferrous metals and other industries into the key management objects of carbon emissions, and enabled enterprises to fulfill their carbon emission obligations through the market-oriented means of national carbon trading. If the effectiveness of new energy vehicles in reducing carbon emissions in the use stage can be considered and included in the key management of carbon emissions, carbon trading can be used to encourage more vehicle manufacturers to actively transform and produce new energy vehicles.
