At the top of 2022, I launched the $BUYBACK Crowdfund - a mirror campaign to raise funds to reacquire 7 back catalog albums from the labels that controlled them and to establish the governance membership of Mashibeats - a creator community I founded at the intersection of jazz, electronic music and web3. After a successful 12.3 ETH raise (approx $40k at the time), all funds raised were paid out to the respective labels, and all 7 albums have been reacquired and as such, are now foundational assets for Mashibeats.

$BUYBACK Emerald is phase two of the project with two goals: increasing the membership of Mashibeats governance and building community treasury funds to be deployed to specific proposed projects upon voting approval by the token holders.

This new initiative is being presented in conjunction with sound.xyz by way of 8 music NFT drops over the coming months, each 2-3 weeks apart, and every collected NFT entitles the holder to a $BUYBACK airdrop. 70% of funds raised will go to the Mashibeats community treasury, and 30% to me as the originating music artist.

Who Am I ?

I’m a musician, composer, producer, DJ, community builder, curator and web3 evangelist. Over the past two years, my web3 journey has included the Motherland collection (a 43-minute audio-visual meditation and the first audio-visual album on the blockchain), the $BUYBACK crowdfund, drops on Catalog, Zora and Sound, founding Mashibeats to support like-minded creators as they journey into web3 (shout out Creator Club Season 1 alums!), and co-founding everwave - a music collaboration DAO and platform built on Solana. I’ve gotten to know so many amazing people in the space over the last two years, and continue to be inspired and excited by everything we’ve achieved so far, but even more so, everything that is still to come!

How does $BUYBACK Emerald x sound.xyz work ?

Sound has proven itself to be a paradigm shifter in web3 music, with a tooling that allows music NFTs in edition batches, complete with online listening parties and the support of a great community of creators and collectors.

There will be 8 individual drops on Sound for this initiative with 2-3 weeks between each drop, starting with the first on October 26, 2022 at 2pm PST. Essentially each subsequent drop is more valuable than the previous in several ways:

• The first drop will be an edition of 32, priced at 0.03 ETH, with each subsequent drop offering less editions and a +0.01 increase in price, finishing with drop #8 which will be an edition of just 10, priced at 0.1 ETH, for a total of 148 editions across the entire 8 drops.

• Each subsequent drop will also be connected to a larger $BUYBACK airdrop, starting with an airdrop of 35 $BUYBACK per NFT collected for drop 1, scaling up to 70 $BUYBACK per NFT collected for drop 8. Relevant amounts of $BUYBACK will be airdropped to collectors holding each NFT at the time of snapshots on 12/1/22, 2/13/23 and 3/20/23.

• Each drop has a Golden Egg - one holder of each drop that has sold out will be the Golden Egg recipient and be gifted an IRL mounted canvas of the NFT cover art! We’re working on something extra special for collectors who hold all 8 NFTs that will be dropped 👀

eg, a collector collecting one NFT of each drop x 8 drops would not only own 8 new music NFTs, but also be able to claim 420 $BUYBACK tokens representing governance in Mashibeats. By collecting two of each drop, that would multiply to 820 $BUYBACK tokens and so on, with a max cap of 1500 $BUYBACK per wallet address. A total of 7,160 tokens are allocated to this initiative which is 29% of the full supply.

The deadline to submit your finished remix(es) is JUNE 9, 2022. **

Once entries have closed, everyone in the Mashibeats discord will be able to vote for their favorites via our discord, creating a shortlist of finalists.

The shortlist then gets voted on on-chain by our $BUYBACK governance community using snapshot tooling with weighted voting in order to choose the winning three remixes.

At the top of the year, I decided to launch Mashibeats Creator Club - an umbrella for what is intended to be an ongoing season by season of mentorship programs for me to support and guide musicians into their genesis web3 projects. I've been blessed throughout my career in so many ways, not least of all being able to sustain a 20+ year career primarily focused on my own music, with zero regard for commercial compromise. Mentorship is one way to give-back, pay it forward and empower like-mindeds get that little bit closer to their own dreams and goals.

Mashibeats is a DAO-in-the-making, a creator community founded around my own life's work - including a back catalog of 16 albums, half of which have been reacquired or are mid-reacquisition thanks to the $BUYBACK crowdfund. It's intended as a support network and infrastructure for aspiring musicians in the web3 space, especially those whose work falls left-of-center and challenges the status quo and mainstream of music today. There are multiple initiatives in the planning stages, and Creator Club is the first to be fully implemented.

The Intention

Mashibeats Creator Club Season 1 is very much an experiment. I've mentored before, but never in a group. From the jump, my plan was to have 10 musicians in the cohort, with weekly zoom sessions altogether, and hold space for the cohort as they individually and collectively work on their ideas, concepts, logistics and planning. I'm no expert, but with over two decades in the music industry, releasing through majors to indies to self-releases, along with my experiments in the web3 space, I’m in a position to be able to help others. With the many amazing people and platforms I've gotten to know in the space, I felt like I could connect dots and potentially help open doors for others to be able to deploy and grow in the space while feeling like there was always a helping hand and support crew. It's such an overwhelming space to try and enter and be part, even more so when you have no tribe or community in it to start with. Creator Club is intended as a salve to these challenges.

Of note, there is zero cost for anyone to be part of the program. I'm a big believer in the value of community and the 'teach a man to fish' adage - if I can help some amazing creatives come into the space, feeling supported and safe, then I know that those creatives will most likely go on to do the same for their own peers and communities. If there's an ulterior motive at play, that's it - red pill people who can then go on to red pill more. The greatest success is when I hear from someone that they've taken what they've learned in Creator Club and shared it with their peers who aren't in the space yet.

The Selection Process

I put the call out on social media for music creators interested in jumping into web3 to apply via a simple google form where they shared links to their work and thoughts on why they’re interested in web3. 63 applicants were in the first round - a super eclectic range of musicians covering numerous genres and levels of establishment and success. From that initial 63, I chose 21 to proceed to round two, leading to another google form, this time questioning applicants' bandwidth and willingness to commit to the program as well as offering another opportunity to share their thoughts on what web3 could mean to them and their music. tbh, all 21 of those shortlisted for round two could have been in the final 10 and it was a huge challenge to choose who to choose.

As I reassured everyone who wasn't selected, Mashibeats is a resource for everyone like-minded, and our discord is a place to share projects, get feedback, brainstorm ideas and connect with each other - Creator Club or not. The final 10 were selected based on their individual visions being in alignment with web3 ideology and possibilities, their art/music and selves being of high integrity and speaking to qualities that I consider important - cultural narrative, creative risk-taking, community mindedness, a proven ability to deliver, a balance of diversity and the final deciding factor: my gut instinct.

The final 10 applicants who make up Mashibeats Creator Club Season 1 were confirmed at the end of January, and by early February, we kicked off with our first weekly online meet-up. Over the last 3 months, we’ve all become firm friends, huge fans of each other, and a squad that is going to last a whole lot longer than just the duration of this program.

The Future of Creator Club

I'm undecided yet what Season 2 will look like - it may be the same, a version-of, or totally different to Season 1. I'm motivated to continue mentoring and guiding creatives into the wonderful world of web3. Maybe it'll be an intensive IRL camp; maybe it'll be an on-going continuation of Season 1 with some twists n tweaks - who knows! It does take considerable bandwidth on my part to hold space for multiple people while maintaining my own artist career, building out Mashibeats and keeping personal life in balance, but it's a way I know I can give value to individuals, to the space and to the culture we're all part of building. We talk about not wanting to import the gate-keeper energy of web2 into this new space, I'm proposing that we proactively proliferate the gate-opener energy in web3.

Creator Club Season 2, whatever form it will take, will be announced on our discord as soon as it's ready to happen - in the meantime, we always welcome ideas, discussion and building in the Mashibeats community via our discord. Motherland is a 43-minute film, a meditative audio-visual exploration of my Japanese ancestry and culture. Presented as both a super-NFT film and audio NFTs, Motherland features my Japanese roots-inspired music through a solo performance, set to footage shot during an artist residency in Kaga, Japan, during Summer 2019. It’s a series of instrumental tone-poems and immersive audio-visual moments to let your imagination play.

The collector of the super-NFT Motherland film will also receive additional content and a share in the entire collection’s revenue (more about that below). As well as sharing the project to share my art, I’m excited to experiment with different ways to present, share and incentivize music in the web3 space.

The Film

We begin Motherland on the train ride to Kaga, and then on to an immersive journey of soundtracked sights following outdoor pathways to temples, rivers and lakes, accompanied by the sounds of nature and the eight compositions.

The footage of Japan featured in the film was shot in two locations - Kakusenkei Gorge, a beautiful forested valley with a river running between, and Natadera Temple - a Buddhist temple established in 714 AD with sprawling grounds, temple buildings and a distinct feeling of spiritual homeland. Along with the visuals, I’ve incorporated all the field-sound - the summer breeze rustling the trees, cicada song in the air, and the river’s running water. These create an integral connecting of the music with the visuals, and underpin the film with the sonic signature of nature.

Each composition included in the film is introduced with shodo (traditional Japanese calligraphy) by visual artist Kuniharu Yoshida. The visual of the shodo and sight of Kuniharu’s hand in motion captures so much of the spirit of ancestry and roots which this project focuses on, and I’m grateful to have his contributions here.

The Music

My performance was filmed in Los Angeles, utilizing my Ableton rig that, as well as emulating my first love - the piano, allows me to live-sample, play synths, program rhythms and essentially gives me a palette to paint whatever sounds I imagine. Where some of my work dives heavily into beat-culture and the dancefloor, Motherland is an introspective offering, leaning primarily on the sound of the piano and subtle use of electronics to tell the story.

The NFT Collection

Motherland is a deeply personal project for me and it’s important to present it in a way that preserves this meaning. Shout-out to my friend Sirsu who helped me put this collection together and encouraged and supported me to enter the NFT space.

The collection consists of:

• the super-NFT film

• eight 1-of-1 individual-track audio NFTs

• 50 open-edition digital mixtape NFTs

• four (only 4!) hand-pressed, translucent vinyl commemorative pressings. No more vinyl will be pressed.
