1. TokenSents 

Category: Social Trading

Our winning app is a token sentiment tool. Enter any token contract address, and TokenSents delivers a sentiment rating based on social media analysis. It uses Memory to pull in live tweets about the token and analyse bullish and bearish sentiment patterns. Judges ranked it highly on its concept, UX, usefulness and its novel use of Memory Protocol.

How it uses Memory: Pulls Twitter data without relying on third-party API.

2. MemBoard

Category: Trust scores and socialfi

Another simple but powerful use case for Memory. Enter any wallet address or ENS, and MemBoard returns a “legitimacy score” for that user based on activity across all their known accounts. 

From a single wallet address, MemBoard scans for activity and influence across Twitter, Forecaster, Zora, Github, and onchain activity to determine a trust score. This could be used by projects or protocols to determine the legitimacy of contributors or airdrop allocation. It could be used by socialfi projects or evolve into a socialfi leaderboard of its own.

3. Pixotchi

Category: Social

Pixotchi is a mini-app with an existing user base. The app lets you take care of unchain plants and earn rewards in a fun pixelated mini-app world. 

By integrating Memory, Pixotchi brought their leaderboard to life, revealing known social accounts of all plant owners. 

How it uses Memory: Pulls social and identity information from known wallets.

Judging criteria

Judges were asked to rank each app one through five according to the following criteria:

• Is it fully functional and live in production?

• The UX, user-readiness and overall polish.

• Is it uniquely enabled by Memory?

• Is it a useful, novel app idea?

Judges ranked their choices anonymously, and then all scores were averaged to determine the final ranking.

Memory: featured in the Base App

Last week a new app launched, powered by Memory.

FollowSync is a mini-app enabling users to sync their follow graph from Twitter to Base App. A perfect example of how Memory’s shared data layer can unlock composability across platforms.

More than 600 people used FollowSync to port their followers between platforms so far, and Memory Protocol pays a portion of revenue to all users, and those whose data is called.

Memory API Builder Rewards

Building on the success of FollowSync, we also launched a rewards program for developers in the Base ecosystem.

We are accepting submissions for a focused two-week buildathon, with 500,000 $MEM in rewards for all accepted participants.

The goal is to create novel mini-apps using the Memory API.

   Builders submit project ideas and scopes. Judges evaluate concept strength, feasibility, innovation, and track record.

2. Selection on October 29
   The top 10 applicants (or fewer, if quality dictates) are chosen to receive access and $MEM credits.

3. Build Period October 29- November 11th
   Teams ship their live projects, repos, and demos using the Memory API.

4. Judging & Rewards November 12th
   Projects are scored on utility, design, originality, and impact. Rewards from the total MEM bounty are distributed across all participants.

5. Results & Distribution November 12th
   Winners are announced via livestream. MEM rewards are streamed over time via Sablier, ensuring sustainable participation.

Memory: turning your data into a revenue stream

Our digital lives are owned, monetized and controlled by a few large companies. Despite generating billions in value from our data, none of that is ever shared back to us.

Worse, our experience online is fragmented. Our digital identities and memories are trapped on siloed platforms, forcing us to start over on every new app, website or LLM. 

Memory is designed to fix this, with a new model for data monetization and data portability.

It's already working, and paying users

Today, Memory is powering a number of products, including Factory.fm — a music review iOS app that was just featured as Apple's App of the Day — and Farcaster mini apps like Followcast.

Revenue and rewards are being distributed to users every Friday via a fee router on Base, with ~$15k distributed in the last two weeks.

Why now?

This is the oldest problem on the internet, but for the first time there’s a small window of opportunity to change a core online model, brought about by the convergence of crypto and AI technologies:

• Onchain micropayments to share revenue with users.

• zkTLS to securely verify data from multiple sources.

• LLMs demand portable data for better context.

• x402 to accept agentic micropayments.

Founded by Jack Spallone (former Consensys) and RAC (first album on Ethereum, 2017), Memory combines these elements to create a user-owned data layer for the new internet.

Introducing Memory Protocol V0

The initial funds into Memory are being used to develop Memory Protocol V0 and accelerate adoption among consumer apps. V0 is the earliest phase of Memory’s data layer, giving developers access to aggregated public data, and sharing revenue with users automatically.

Live today, builders and AI agents can query public identity and social data for any internet user. An early group of apps are using Memory V0 to create hyper-personalized onboarding experiences that feel like magic data portability — such as Followcast which automatically syncs your Twitter follows to Farcaster.

Users are paid a revenue share in $MEM direct to their Memory Vault whenever their public data is queried by the API. They don’t even have to do anything.

The future

In the future, users will be invited to upload rich personal data (LLM chat history, music preferences, health and fitness data), unlocking data portability for users, and a fully decentralized open data marketplace for apps to access.

All types of data will be monetized, with incentives for curating high-quality data sets. In preparation for this future, agentic payments and automatic rev-share are built in from day one.

It’s a big moment that proves crypto apps can reach the mainstream, without users even realizing they’re built with crypto.

The origin of Memory

As many of you know, the origin of Memory came from a frustration with the music industry. As an artist, Memory’s co-founder RAC built one of the largest followings on Soundcloud (more than 1 million fans) but had no way to connect with them, nor take those followers with him to Spotify or other music platforms.

The genesis of Memory was quite simply: “how do we separate that data from platforms?”

That originally led us to building factory.fm — a simple music app that allows users to rate, review and track their favourite music.

The difference: the data is owned by those users, and can be used as open building blocks by developers. In turn, the user gets paid when their data is called.

Apple’s App of the Day

The iOS app launched earlier this year and maintains a strong, passionate user-base of die-hard music fans.

And today it was selected as Apple’s App of the Day across 139 countries.

It’s a strong sign that crypto-native apps are breaking through to the mainstream, and, like Factory, the mainstream doesn’t even know they’re built on crypto rails.

The magic of data portability means the internet should feel more fluid than ever before. Users no longer need to re-fill the same profile information, start from scratch with another empty feed or scroll through generic follow recommendations.

Memory Protocol is now sharing payments weekly with users when their data is queried. This week, 7,372 wallets are eligible for a total of 15,517 $MEM.

It starts with small micropayments, but it’s working: a new onchain model where people control their data and get recurring payments when it’s used.

How does it work?

When apps, websites or AI agents access the Memory Protocol API, they pay a fee in $MEM — just like purchasing any API credits. 

Examples of apps that queried the Memory API this week include our Memory Vault app, Memory AI Chat and mini-apps like Followcast.

Their payments are processed by Memory’s onchain fee-router and payments are split between the corresponding user and the Memory treasury. Every Thursday, those rewards are distributed to the user's Memory Vault. For more information, read our full blog on how payments work on Memory Protocol.

How to collect your earnings?

A total of 7,372 wallets earned $MEM this week. Owners of these wallets can visit their Memory Vault, connect their wallet and claim their earnings.

Navigate to “Rewards” and if you’re eligible you’ll see an option to claim your data rewards.

Prove the concept, then scale

These earnings are small weekly micropayments for your data — revenue shared with users from our earliest test apps. It’s proof that the model and the protocol works.

Our next mission is to scale Memory API adoption to consumer apps across Base and beyond, thereby increasing the weekly rewards each user receives.

Eventually, this can scale to the whole internet.

We’re committed to token transparency and aim to follow the guidelines of Blockworks’ Token Transparency framework. To that end, below is the token distribution, vesting, and wallet addresses.

User distributions - 15% of the supply is reserved for everyone who contributes their data to the protocol, including those who already claimed their Memory Vault and linked accounts in Chapter 1 between May-August 2025, as well as future distributions for those who supply richer data in following chapters. $MEM claiming from Chapters will be available soon.

Memory Protocol flywheel

Memory is now available to builders with aggregated public data for over 150k unique individuals. In V0 Builders can access instant retrieval of social data (Twitter and Farcaster) and public identities linked to wallets for any user (access docs here). 

Users get paid via onchain splits whenever their data is queried. The token completes the loop that makes Memory Protocol different to previous attempts at user-owned data. 

Making the internet magic again

Memory Protocol is designed to make the internet feel like magic. For builders, it means you already know everything about a user when they land in your app. You already know their followers on other platforms, so you can make familiar recommendations. You know their posts, content and preferences, and their onchain activity.

The user no longer needs to start from zero. You don’t need to ask preference questions or suggest random follows. It should speed up onboarding and reduce your churn dramatically.

It flips the existing internet model on its head by rewarding you for the value you create, instead of platforms taking that value for themselves.

So, how does it work?

Let’s break down the onchain payment system inside Memory, powering instant payments between apps, AI agents and users. And how it will evolve in the future.

The simple version

In the simplest possible terms:

• Apps and AI agents can access Memory today by purchasing API credits.

• Onchain splits automatically pay users if their data is queried.

• A portion of the revenue goes to the treasury to fund protocol growth.

Let’s get into the deeper mechanics of how it works.

App payments

Builders can access Memory’s open data protocol today. The API is live, allowing the retrieval of social data (Farcaster and Twitter) and public identities linked to wallets for any user.

Apps like Followcast are already using Memory to improve onboarding flows (e.g. Followcast syncs your Twitter follows to Farcaster so you don’t have to start from zero on Farcaster). Payments work as follows:

• App builders pay for API credits to access Memory Protocol data.

• The cost is fixed in USD for price stability.

• Payments are made in $MEM at the current exchange rate.

A percentage of the revenue goes to the protocol treasury, and a percentage goes to the user that got queried.

AI Agent payments

AI agents will likely be the biggest customers for every API in the near future. That’s why Memory is built for agents from day one using Coinbase’s x402 standard.

• Agents can pay-per-use with onchain micropayments (x402)

• Cost fixed in USD, paid in $MEM

• No KYC required.

This creates a system where agents can freely access Memory data and payments can flow seamlessly to users when their data is queried. Again, a percentage of the revenue goes to the protocol treasury, and a percentage goes to the user.

Memory’s Fee Router

We built a custom fee router on Base that splits payments onchain automatically. It sends payments to the corresponding users, while routing a percentage of revenue to the protocol for development.

This rev-share model was not possible before L2s unlocked micropayments at scale. Built on Base, Memory can now process millions of microdata payment splits instantly to users.

How users claim their revenue

User revenue will be periodically distributed via a Merkle Tree, and users can claim their earnings through their Memory Vault.

In Phase Zero, many users will begin accruing earnings without having to do anything. Memory can aggregate public data for any user, creating a distinct identity map for users spanning Twitter, Farcaster, Zora, and all known wallet addresses, as well as their public social data such as Twitter follows and posts (this is what powered Followcast’s follow-sync feature).

When apps or agents query this data, earnings will be routed to the user automatically, and they can claim it in their Memory Vault.

In future phases, users will be invited to upload additional private data such as LLM history, Spotify preferences or movie recommendations. This increases the value of their data and boosts their chance of earnings in the future.

Future developments

In the future, Memory will expand beyond the public data API to a fully decentralized open data marketplace for the internet. Users will monetize any type of data and curators will stake $MEM to signal quality and help standardize data sets. Apps and agents will create a demand-side marketplace, all while paying revenue to users.

Internet users generate valuable data through every online interaction: tweets, posts, reviews, and preferences. Yet this data remains siloed within platforms that monetize it without sharing value with its creators. Users cannot port their digital history across applications, leading to fragmented experiences and lost opportunities.

Memory Protocol solves this by creating a user-owned data layer for the internet. Through automatic indexing of public data and secure storage of private information, Memory enables:

In Web3, one of the biggest issues apps face is creating crafted experiences for users based on their identities and data. Users typically connect to apps with a wallet address that has no social identity attached to it, making it hard to create custom experiences and recommendations. Memory powers apps by providing an API that maps all identities attached to a user. Users can be queried by wallet address, Farcaster, Twitter, Lens, or Zora accounts, and the result is an identity graph with all the user identities related to the queried address for the following platforms: Ethereum address, Solana address, email, website, Farcaster, ENS, Basenames, GitHub, Factory, Talent Protocol, Lens, and Zora. Memory also provides in-depth data access for user data, such as Twitter and Farcaster follow graphs, posts, and a set of private data provided by users. One of the biggest advantages for apps is that by using Memory to get personalized data for their users, part of the API cost goes back to their users in the form of protocol revenue share.

In short, Memory allows users to own and monetize their private and public data while enabling apps to craft personalized experiences for their users by accessing in-depth information about them while also rewarding their users with part of Memory's protocol revenue.

Memory Protocol Overview

Memory Protocol facilitates users to aggregate their publicly available data and upload their private data so they can control and monetize it via a share of the protocol revenue generated by third-party apps consuming their data.

Data Consumption by Consumer Apps

At the core of Memory's economy is the $MEM token, used by consumer applications (any app or service using Memory to retrieve user data) to query user data. Apps purchase API credits at a fixed USD price. The cost is charged in $MEM based on its current USD value. A percentage of the revenue goes to the protocol and the rest goes to the user that got queried. Rewards are periodically distributed via a Merkle Tree where users can claim the rewards. $MEM rewards are not only a way to allow users to monetize their data but also an onboarding mechanism to Memory. Users can get $MEM rewards even if they haven't had any contact with Memory by having their public data queried by consumer apps. Even though they can receive a reward as revenue share for public data access, they are incentivized to upload their private data too, increasing their data value and likelihood of getting more rewards in the future.

Consumer applications access user data through the Memory using two payment methods:

• API Credits: Pre-purchased with $MEM tokens for regular usage

• x402 Micropayments: Enable one-time purchases without KYC requirements

Protocol Overview

The Memory Protocol provides two main services: 

Identity Graph

The identity graph provides an engine that queries all identities (social, email, websites, web3 identities) that are publicly linked to a wallet address or linked by users via the Memory app. It provides an array of identities based on a single wallet address, allowing apps to create a richer user experience and have a better understanding of the user identity and data. Even if the user has a wallet address that doesn't have any link to a user identity, they can go to the Memory app and link this address to another wallet, Twitter, Farcaster, and other social accounts to expand the identity graph. All identity links generated by a user are validated by the Memory backend. Users can get $MEM rewards for linking different identities to their wallet addresses to enrich the publicly available identities.

An interesting use case for Memory's identity graph that uses public links with user-generated links is for embedded wallets. Users usually have a public address that is linked to an ENS name and has other links to Twitter and Farcaster accounts. But imagine the user just created an embedded wallet for a specific app. In that case, the identity graph will be empty since the wallet doesn't have any public link to any other identity. The user is then incentivized to go to the Memory app and provide a single link between their public wallet and the new embedded wallet. By doing that, all identities linked to the public wallet will also be linked to the new embedded wallet, making the customization experience for the user much better and providing user rewards. It's worth noting that the user can either make a link via the Memory app or within a third-party app via Memory's API.

Data Graph

The data graph provides public user data that's automatically indexed by Memory's engine, with no need for user action, such as Farcaster and Twitter follow graphs and posts. It also enables users to upload private data that is encrypted and stored within Memory. There are two types of private data:

• Structured data: Predefined data sets by Memory and validated on upload, such as ChatGPT conversation histories and Spotify listening preferences. Third-party apps pay a fixed price to consume it.

• Unstructured data: Users can upload any arbitrary data with a valid schema for consumption. It requires a pool of data curators to assess the value and validity of the data in order to price it, making the price dynamic for third-party apps.

Protocol Timeline

Memory Protocol will evolve through parallel development tracks, expanding data capabilities while progressively decentralizing infrastructure. Both roadmaps work in tandem to create a robust, community-owned data marketplace.

Data Availability Roadmap

The Memory Protocol will launch in three progressive phases, each expanding data types and monetization options while maintaining $MEM as the sole payment token.

Phase 0: Network Bootstrap
The initial phase builds network effects through zero-friction participation. Memory's backend automatically indexes users' existing public social data from Twitter and Farcaster, requiring no user action. This creates immediate value where users earn passive $MEM income whenever consumer applications query their public data. By removing all barriers to entry, Phase 0 establishes a foundational user base and demonstrates the protocol's value before introducing more complex features.

Phase 1: Structured Data Marketplace
This phase introduces active data monetization through pre-defined categories. Users can upload specific data types such as ChatGPT conversation histories, Spotify listening preferences, and movie recommendations through validated templates ensuring data quality and consistency. The protocol implements fixed pricing per category, creating predictable economics for both providers and consumers. Revenue from each transaction is transparently split between users and the protocol treasury, establishing sustainable economics while maintaining simplicity.

Phase 2: Open Data Economy
The final phase unlocks the protocol's full potential by enabling users to monetize any data type. Users can create and submit custom datasets with proper schemas and metadata, from cooking preferences to specialized professional knowledge. To maintain quality, Phase 2 introduces curators who stake $MEM to signal valuable data, earning rewards for accurate assessments or facing slashing for poor judgment. This creates a self-regulating market where pricing dynamically adjusts based on demand and curator confidence.

Decentralization Roadmap

Memory will transition from centralized operations to full decentralization through four careful phases, ensuring security and reliability while progressively distributing control to the community.

Phase 0: Centralized Foundation
During initial launch, the Oscillator team operates a centralized backend to ensure rapid iteration and stable growth. While centralized, all user data remains encrypted end-to-end, maintaining privacy standards that will persist through decentralization. This phase prioritizes product-market fit and user experience refinement without distributed infrastructure complexity. No node rewards are distributed during this foundational period.

Phase 1: Node Architecture Migration
The protocol transitions to distributed node architecture while maintaining Oscillator team control. This phase replaces the monolithic backend with a network of nodes utilizing Multi-Party Computation (MPC) encryption and consensus mechanisms for secure data storage and retrieval. Though centrally operated, this establishes the technical foundation for future decentralization. Node operators receive no rewards during testing and optimization.

Phase 2: Trusted Partner Expansion
Following successful node network operation, the protocol begins selective decentralization by inviting trusted partners and established validators to operate nodes. The network implements EigenLayer's Actively Validated Services (AVS) framework for economic security, introducing the first $MEM rewards for node operators. This controlled expansion tests decentralized operations while maintaining high security and performance through reputable operators.

Phase 3: Permissionless Network
The final phase achieves full decentralization by opening node operation to any community member. Operators must stake tokens (ETH or $MEM, pending governance) to join the network, creating economic alignment and security guarantees. All qualified participants can contribute to data processing, network security, and governance while earning protocol rewards proportional to their stake and performance.

Conclusion

Memory Protocol creates the foundation for a user-owned internet where data generates value for its creators. By solving the fragmentation of digital identity and enabling seamless data monetization, Memory empowers both users and developers to build richer, more personalized experiences.

Memory: the user-owned data protocol for the new internet

For two decades, internet platforms have built empires on top of our data, without ever sharing revenue with us.

This model isn’t just economically unfair, it resulted in a fragmented internet. We are locked into platforms and repeatedly forced to start over with every new app. Perhaps worse, we can’t build new experiences with that data, limiting our experiences on and offline.

We have no control of our digital memories. Until now.

Memory Protocol is the foundation for a user-owned internet. You control your data through a personal Memory Vault, and revenue is distributed back to you whenever your data is used.

If you’re a builder, Memory Protocol provides rich user data via an API, so you can build personalized experiences without fear of being rugged by a centralized API.

The Memory API is live today with aggregated public data for over 150k unique individuals, which means builders can start building (access docs here) and users can start earning without doing anything. This includes arrays of accounts like wallet address, ENS, Twitter, Farcaster, and Zora with supplemental data like follow graph, posts, and profile info.

In the future, anyone will be able to upload and curate more unique personal data via the Memory Vault app, forming an unstoppable open data marketplace for the internet with user control at the center.

Why $MEM

$MEM is the heart of the Memory economy. It serves the following functions:

• Medium of exchange - Apps pay $MEM to unlock API credits.

• Revenue to users - Revenue is routed to users in $MEM when their data is queried.

Ecosystem development - 15% is allocated for apps, agents and builders who wish to utilize the Memory API and contribute app data in the future. Allocations will be distributed on a diminishing basis so reach out for early access.

Team and advisors - 15% is allocated to the team as we build towards a fully decentralized protocol. The team is subject to a 12 month cliff and 3 year vesting schedule to encourage long-term commitment.

Investors - 15% is allocated to our small group of early backers who trusted the vision for user-owned data on the internet. Roughly two thirds of our investor pool remains available for future protocol funding.

Treasury - 30% to incentivize long-term development, growth, and operations of the protocol.

Launching on Base

Base envisions a user-owned internet where value flows freely to those who create it. We believe this starts at the data layer. Every data point you create is valuable, and should be rewarded as such.

Introducing Memory Protocol

Phase Zero: Live Today

It was the easiest place to start without requiring anyone to load their info into a Memory Vault. Memory unifies it in one place, creating a valuable single source of identity data for apps and agents. When apps use Memory Protocol to query this data, you’ll earn fees directly in $MEM whether you've gone to the Memory Vault yet or not. As of today, over 157k accounts can be resolved via the Memory API.

In this phase, you will start earning without even doing anything. But if you want to increase your earnings, go to your Memory Vault and verify your account links and social profiles now. You’ll accrue an additional $MEM balance today for every eligible account link. This is live today.

Phase 1: Uploading rich personal data - Next, you’ll be invited to upload ChatGPT conversation histories, Spotify listening preferences, movie recommendations and other personal data. We’ll create a data marketplace around this with revenue flowing back to users.

Phase 2: Open data economy - The final phase unlocks the protocol's full potential by enabling users to monetize any type of data they possess, with a dynamic pricing model. Curators can stake $MEM to signal valuable data.

We saw over 40,000 accounts now have a personal data vault they control, linked to at least one social account like Twitter or Farcaster.

This being crypto we know that “unique addresses” is not always the most reliable metric, but every one accounts being linked to a unique Twitter or Farcaster link makes us confident that a large number are real human accounts with multiple verified social links.

It begins to strengthen our hypothesis: The demand for personal sovereign data stores is being pulled forward due to the need for LLM personalization.

Memory Vaults: the heart of our portable internet vision

Memory Vaults are the main consumer product for Memory.

It’s a digital data vault for everyone to control and manage their data, earn from it, and take it with them between apps and LLMs. We’re rolling it out in chapters.

Chapter 1 is about verifying your identity. Users can:

• Curate their digital identity in one place (wallets, Twitter, Github etc.)

• Earn $MEM balance for linking their accounts.

• Receive real revenue share when their identity data is queried via our API.

Chapter 2 will focus on rich personal data:

• Upload your LLM history, take control of your “memory,” and port it between LLMs.

Demand for personalization is being pulled forward by AI

We originally aimed to have 100k Memory Vaults live by the end of the year, but we are already on track to surpass that.

The demand for a personal, sovereign data store has been accelerated dramatically by the conversation around LLM memory. In the last two weeks alone:

The likely answer is an open data layer where the user controls their memory, and can take it with them between LLMs. The conversation is already heading to this conclusion:

'Memory Changes Everything'

What I found most interesting grooming the quote tweets and responses was a reply with a link to a Nikunj Kothari's Substack, 'Balancing Act,' titled 'Memory Changes Everything.' In the piece from Kothari, he agrees with Ashley and Aaron, but also dives deeper with some core beliefs that explain why memory with AI is so important:

• Cross-app memory unlocks deeper personalization
  AI that can access aggregated context from every tool you use will move from surface-level suggestions to decisions shaped around your long-term patterns. This is not news. There have been numerous companies recently announced that are focused specifically on personal data's advantage with LLMs.

• A neutral conduit is required
  Something like Anthropic’s Model Context Protocol (MCP) is needed so apps can trade context securely instead of hoarding it in silos. I would add too that MCP is integral for the integrating experience. Next week, we are allowing users to manually upload their chatGPT history to their Memory Vault and use our MCP tooling to bring it to Claude. This solves a real problem but has too much friction. Now we need a standard for exporting.

• Strategic forgetting and user control are non-negotiable
  Users must be able to inspect, correct, or delete stored context and see clear benefits for anything they share. Unlike other companies who have recognized the importance of personal data portability we are taking a user-permissioned approach.

• Startups have a short window before giants re-platform
  Kothari estimates roughly 18 months for new players to own this layer before incumbents rebuild their stacks around memory. I've said this to several people: the winner of this category already exists today.

• AI will move from autocomplete to understanding intent
  The real jump isn’t better phrasing; it’s software that grasps why you act and adapts workflows. What can be done with Memory Vaults is limited only by time and imagination, but that demand requires supply, and we're starting with Memory Vaults.

The blog was also a fascinating read on the 'how' of AI memory, but the 'why' echoes what inspired Memory Protocol.

Why “Plaid for Memory” Resonates

Plaid unblocked fintech in three moves:

1. Standardized access: a single, predictable API instead of tons of bank scrapers.

2. User-centric permissions: OAuth pop-up, tap to grant, tap to revoke.

3. Developer-friendly economics: small API fees that felt trivial next to the value unlocked.

AI memory is stuck pre-Plaid. Each LLM keeps its own walled-garden memory: ChatGPT knows your topical interests in depth, Claude knows your personal habits, Replit and Cursor know your coding abilities. None of them talk to each other, so you you will keep re-training assistants on facts you already know... and that’s before you bring in Spotify, Factory.fm, Goodreads, Twitter graphs, or the infinite other pockets of context you’ve built over the past decade+ online.

A “Plaid for Memory” would be the layer that:

• Collects your scattered context into a single vault you own.

• Normalizes & secures it behind a simple permission pop-up.

• Pays you whenever an app or agent taps that vault for value.

The summit itself captured everything great about community-run crypto events: thoughtful, single-track conversations, a venue that felt lively and filled with faces I know from online, and personal touches like badges with our Farcaster profile photos, thanks to icebreaker.xyz. When Fred Wilson described his vision for portable user-owned data stores, it felt like he was speaking directly about Memory. Winning Best Interoperable App with our buildathon project, FollowCast, made the moment even sweeter.

Earlier in the week, I'd jumped between Variant’s office to cowork, Archetype’s happy hour, and a Base gathering where I met the Paragraph.xyz team in person. Thursday was a blur between meetings with friends at Splits and Catalog, along with stops back and forth to the buildathon in midtown.

Reflecting on that Friday evening walk again, it felt symbolic. Navigating crypto is a lot like moving your way through busy New York streets. Sometimes you're forced to zigzag, crossing unexpectedly when you have the pedestrian light, sometimes jaywalking, other times going down blocks that weren't a part of your original route, but always moving forward. Ryan and I left the summit under the Williamsburg Bridge and moved up all the way through Williamsburg to the south end of McCarren Park. Up, albeit zigzagging, a lot like each of our separate journeys in crypto. Like NYC, there is always another thing to get to. Farcaster and the community around it remind me why the constant effort is worth it. The journey isn't meant to end; ideally, it keeps evolving. And events like FarCon help keep that spirit alive.

It was a good idea. But it wasn’t the full picture.

Over the last year, we’ve learned a lot. We’ve built and shipped FanScore, Poke, Factory.fm—apps designed to explore music identity, social graphs, and discovery. And through that process, the scope of Oscillator became much bigger than music.

If you spend enough time thinking about who should own music data, you end up thinking about who should own data, period.

Right now, our digital history is fragile. Platforms disappear. Accounts get banned. Playlists, bookmarks, saved posts—gone. And even when platforms don’t erase things, they force you to start from scratch every time you join something new.

Oscillator is about solving this. Not just for music, but for everything:

• The songs you loved in 2018.

• The books you read in college.

• The movies you rated on Letterboxd.

• The tweets and posts that shaped your thinking.

We forget more than we remember, and our digital past shouldn’t be this disposable.

We haven’t shipped this yet.

What we have today are early apps, but they don’t yet deliver on the core promise of data portability. That changes soon.

The Oscillator app is coming to Base. It will be the first step toward giving people a persistent, portable digital memory—one that belongs to you, not the platforms they use.

We're trying to make data portable between apps, starting with music because it's a good test case - clear data models, defined relationships (artists, releases, users, behaviors), and real value in making it portable.

When we started thinking about how to make data portable, we kept hitting the same wall: how do you know who owns what data? And more importantly, how do you verify that ownership across different applications?

Traditional identity systems (OAuth, OIDC) are built for a world where each service owns its own user data. They're about access, not ownership. We needed something that could work across apps while giving users actual control of their data.

This led us to combining Decentralized Identifiers (DIDs) with smart contract wallets, plus Verifiable Credentials (VCs) for data claims. Each user gets both a DID and a smart wallet account - the DID provides the identity that links everything together, while the smart wallet enables secure ownership and control. VCs then let apps make claims about that identity - when you play an album 50 times, follow an artist, or save a track on one platform, those actions become credentials that you can bring to other apps (if you choose to).

For artists, it works the same way - they get both a DID and smart wallet that lets them prove they're the same verified artist everywhere. Their streaming numbers, content ownership, and follower relationships become VCs that are verified across platforms, not locked in silos.

We looked at existing standards like did:web, did:pkh, and did:ethr, but each had fundamental limitations that made them impractical for our use case. So we wrote our own DID spec, built specifically to work with smart contract wallets.

UIS uses two key EIPs that make this possible:

• EIP-3668 for off-chain lookups, keeping most data off-chain while maintaining verifiability

• EIP-6492 for counterfactual verification, which lets us validate signatures from smart contract wallets that don't exist yet onchain (great explainer here)

This combination means we can create DIDs with smart contract wallets without requiring users to pay gas up front, while still maintaining data integrity across apps. Everything stays minimal and efficient onchain.

Key features:

• No gas fees for creation

• Minimal onchain storage

• Works with any EVM account type

• Built on proven standards

The smart wallet implementation handles key management, so apps can build whatever auth flows make sense for their users.

Applications can implement their own auth flows (OAuth, email, whatever works for them) while still leveraging UIS for portable identities and verifiable data.

• UIS provides the portable identity and data ownership layer - entirely separate from how users log into apps

• UIS does not impose cumbersome, ethereum-based UX requirements typical with other wallet experiences

• Ethereum wallets can link to these UIS identities and smart accounts, making them more useful for regular apps

• ENS gives us human-readable names, while UIS handles the identity and data layer underneath

UIS is designed to work alongside existing systems, not replace them.

Here's how this works in practice:

For Users: Immediately, a user can access multiple music apps with one identity. When they follow artists or create playlists in one app, they can choose to bring that data to others. Their music identity becomes portable, but they control what gets shared.

For Artists: An artist like James Blake has fans across dozens of platforms. With UIS, he can maintain one verified identity that works everywhere. More importantly, he can access verified data about his audience's engagement across platforms, not just siloed in each app.

For Apps: A new music app doesn't have to start from zero. With user permission, they can access verified data about listening habits, follows, and engagement from other apps in the ecosystem. They compete on experience, not data lock-in.

Now, apply this beyond music. This is what UIS + Oscillator can enable: portable identity.

Behind the scenes, there's an eth-based wallet and identity for every user. But here's what matters: users never need to know this exists. They just use apps like they usually do - no seed phrases, no web3 onboarding, nothing changes about their experience. If they ever want to claim full control of their wallet and data, they can.

For developers, it's just as simple. Integrate UIS, let users bring their data, and even earn from contributing to the ecosystem. That's it.

Ethereum isn't just for tokens and money. It's the only proven platform for building permissionless, composable systems. But for mainstream apps to build on it, we need infrastructure that works at scale without compromising on decentralization.

UIS is our small contribution to this. We needed it for Oscillator, but it should be useful for any app that wants to give users control of their data. Looking forward to seeing what gets built with it.

After several weeks in private alpha, we’re opening up to everyone with a full desktop version, fresh design and improved UI. It’s also the first step to Factory.fm becoming your “Forever Music Profile,” powered by our underlying tech called Oscillator.

We see Factory not as a replacement for streaming, but a welcome accessory to deepen our connection with music. “While streaming platforms dominate music listening, it doesn't have to dictate music discovery and discussion,” our co-founder and design lead Carl Fairclough wrote recently. “People should have a place to record their experiences with their music, to say, “I listened to this, I was here,” and share it with others. That's how scenes are built.”

We were inspired by Letterboxd which has been credited with “changing the way people watch movies,” and revealing an unmet demand for deeper connection to cinema. We believe there’s a similar desire for deeper, social music connection currently lost among the algorithm-driven consumption platforms.

Factory and its vision seemed to resonate with people. We invited ~500 people to the private alpha and we’ve seen more than 3,000 albums logged so far. A further 1,000 people have joined the waitlist.

We learned a lot during this testing phase. In particular, that “logging” an album triggers a positive emotional experience for people. Reflecting on the music you love and revisiting memories attached to a song feels cathartic and rewarding.

We decided to double down on this experience and heighten the feeling of journaling music. The new design lets you highlight your favorite songs on a record and have more granular control over the rating.

While Factory.fm is a valuable standalone app, it’s also part of a much bigger vision.

Factory.fm is the first step to a “Forever Music Profile” — a portable music identity that you can take with you across the internet.

Imagine a world where you log in to a ticketing site and get early access because your Factory profile proves you’re a top 10% fan. Or you visit a new music app and unlock rewards or personalization based on your existing music taste.

This “Forever Music Profile” is possible because your data on factory.fm will truly belong to you. It will not be controlled by us or locked in a closed database for us to sell to advertisers.

You will own it, have control over who can use it, and have the portability to take it with you to other apps in the future via an underlying shared tech called Oscillator.

This flips the entire model of the internet as it currently exists.

It’s a world where artists never have to rebuild their audience from zero again. They can simply port their fans and audience to a new platform. It’s a world where fans own their music identity and don’t have to rebuild a profile on every new platform.

We hope to foster an ecosystem of music apps on top of Oscillator that can build new and compelling experiences — all while compensating you for your data.

Factory is built by the team building Oscillator — the underlying tech that makes a “Forever Music Profile” possible — a shared, open protocol, owned by everyone and controlled by no single actor. 

Oscillator is still under development. In the meantime, the best way to realize this future is to start where the music community already exists, through behaviour that music fans are already familiar with.
