I don’t get it. What he has done for us is phenomenal.

“We’re either all in this together or we’re not. He’s in an England shirt and not only should you support a player in an England shirt regardless but, when you have played to the level he has and put in the performances he has, it should be total commitment.

“The team are totally united and we recognise everyone has difficult moments, and he will come through it. They are real England fans and some are influenced by, I don’t know, social media or ex-players influencing opinion. It has never been acceptable. Why are players going to play any better? Fans should get behind their team.”

England’s Jack Grealish (second left) says he asked the referee not to send Serge Aurier (not pictured) off before half-time at Wembley. Photograph: Dylan Martinez/Reuters

Southgate also expressed concern that the supporters’ reaction could have a wider effect. “Don’t think that some of the other players wouldn’t be looking at that thinking: ‘That could be me one day’,” he said. “That’s been one of the problems with playing for England. How that is going to benefit anybody I really don’t understand.”

Jack Grealish, who set up England’s second goal for Raheem Sterling, echoed Southgate’s sentiment. “I think it’s ridiculous,” he said. “Harry’s been unbelievable for this country in the World Cup, the Euros, outstanding. I think even tonight he was brilliant. It wasn’t nice to hear boos for Harry and the whole team didn’t like it one bit.”

Grealish also confirmed that he had asked the referee, Erik Lambrechts, to exercise common sense when he showed Serge Aurier a second yellow card five minutes before half-time. The forward could be seen talking to Lambrechts at the time and felt that, given the low stakes and the moderateness of the offence, Aurier should have stayed on.

“You want a good game, 11 v 11, it’s not as if he has absolutely smashed someone,” he said. “I do think it killed the game a little bit. I was just saying to the ref ‘come on, leave him’, but I don’t think there was anyone changing his mind.” Southgate appeared to agree, calling the red card “a shame for us from a learning point of view, and also for the fans as a spectacle”.

On the match, Southgate was pleased with the performance. “I thought the mentality at the start was really good,” he said. “It was of course the red card which changes the game which was a shame in terms of the test we wanted.”

While former boss Dean Smith gave him his first-team debut in the last two matches of last season's Premier League campaign, Steven Gerrard has been impressed with the Austria-born midfielder since taking over, using him in four of his eight games in charge.

It is likely that Chukwuemeka will be involved again against Manchester United at Old Trafford on Monday (2.55 p.m. ET, stream live on ESPN+ in the U.S.) in this FA Cup third-round tie, and with a contract expiring in June 2023, a lot of top clubs will be looking at his development in the next few weeks. -- Julien Laurens

Brennan Johnson | 20 | Forward | Nottingham Forest

Debut: Aug. 3, 2019, vs. West Brom, Championship

Why they're on the list: The versatile forward is on the shopping list for several Premier League clubs. He can play off both the right and left wing, and through the middle, and has flourished under coach Steve Cooper's guidance at Nottingham Forest. With his contract up in June 2023, Forest could look to cash in on their prize asset this January, but he's integral to the team.

The Wales international has five goals and four assists this season and will look to cause Arsenal all sorts of difficulty when he lines up against them on Sunday. The match will give the Gunners a chance to see the young forward first hand, but there will be other Premier League teams keeping a close eye on him with the January transfer window open. Cooper said at the turn of the year that Johnson was "starting to manage games" and "really coming of age," but despite the interest being shown in the forward, his father -- ex-Forest striker David Johnson -- is adamant Brennan will be going nowhere in January. -- Tom Hamilton

Zak Lovelace | 15 | Striker | Millwall

Debut: Dec. 29, 2021, vs. Coventry City, Championship

Why they're on the list: Lovelace doesn't celebrate his 16th birthday until Jan. 23, but the Millwall striker is already regarded as one of the most exciting talents outside the Premier League, with Chelsea paying close attention to the youngster who still attends Kingsdale Foundation School in South London. First-team manager Gary Rowett believes Lovelace has a huge future in the game.

"At 15, he is probably as big a talent as I've seen," Rowett said. "He's been stepping up to the U18s and scored a hat trick in one game. He couldn't be handled by players who are three years older than him. He trained with us the other day and ran past one of our senior players like they weren't there. You saw a young player who was really fearless, enjoying his football with none of the baggage that a senior player can sometimes have. Even some of the other players have said: 'Blimey, this kid's got something about him.'"

My friend John always has something to tell me. He knows so much that young men have to have older and more worldly wise men to tell them, for instance, who to trust, how to care for others, and how to live life to the fullest。

Recently, John lost his wife Janet. For eight years she fought against cancer, but in the end her sickness had the last word。

One day John took out a folded piece of paper from his wallet. He had found it, so he told me, when he tidied up some drawers at home. It was a small love letter Janet had written. The note could look like a school girl’s scrawls about her dream guy. All that was missing was a drawing of a heart with the names John and Janet written in it. But the small letter was written by a woman who had had seven children; a woman who fought for her life and who probably only had a few months left to live。

It was also a beautiful recipe for how to keep a marriage together。

Janet’s description of her husband begins thus: “Loved me. Took care of me. Worried about me。”

Even though John always had a ready answer, he never joked about cancer apparently。

Sometimes he came home in the evening to find Janet in the middle of one of those depressions cancer patients so often get. In no time he got her into the car and drove her to her favorite restaurant。

He showed consideration for her, and she knew it. You cannot hide something for someone who knows better。

“Helped me when I was ill,” the next line reads. Perhaps Janet wrote this while the cancer was in one of the horrible and wonderful lulls2. Where everything is – almost – as it used to be, before the sickness broke out, and where it doesn’t hurt to hope that everything is over, maybe forever。

　　“Forgave me a lot。”

　　“Stood by my side。”

And a piece of good advice for everyone who looks on giving constructive criticism as a kind of sacred duty: “Always praising。”

“Made sure I had everything I needed,” she goes on to write。

After that she has turned over the paper and added: “Warmth. Humor. Kindness. Thoughtfulness。”

And then she writes about the husband she has lived with and loved most of her life: “Always there for me when I needed you。”

The last words she wrote sum up all the others. I can see her for me when she adds thoughtfully: “Good friend。”

I stand beside John now, and cannot even pretend to know how it feels to lose someone who is as close to me as Janet was to him. I need to hear what he has to say much more than he needs to talk。

“John,” I ask. “How do you stick together with someone through 38 years – not to mention the sickness? How do I know if I can bear to stand by my wife’s side if she becomes sick one day?”

“You can,” he says quietly. “If you love her enough, you can。”
