But soon, the parents realised there was a fundamental problem. The Dragon Lord was of the water; the Fairy was of the high earth. Their natures were opposed. "I am of the dragon race; you are of the fairy race," Lạc Long Quân said. "We cannot live together forever. We must divide to rule."

So they executed a great split. 50 children followed the father to the sea to rule the coastal plains, while the other 50 children followed the mother to the mountains to rule the highlands.

They governed different domains, optimised for different environments, but they swore a pact: "If there is trouble, we will call, and we will help each other."

In 2026, computer scientists can help us realise that Lạc Long Quân was the first systems architect. He understood that to scale a civilisation (or an intelligence), you cannot keep everything in one sac. You must embrace Mixture of Experts (MoE) and Swarm Intelligence.

The Myth of the Monolith (The Sac)

For the last few years, we have been obsessed with building the one giant brain, much like the early versions of GPT. The ideal was having one model that could write poetry, code in Python, diagnose cancer, and tell jokes. We wanted the sac of 100 eggs to stay as one.

But experience and observation have proven this to be inefficient. A brain designed to write poetry with a creative and fluid mind like water is often bad at executing rigid logic, which needs to be structured and solid like a mountain. When you force one model to do everything, it gets bloated, slow, and expensive. It suffers from severe drifting, starts hallucinating, and sometimes even forgets what it's supposed to be doing.

The Mixture of Experts (The Great Split)

So, the leading AI labs like OpenAI and DeepSeek switched strategies. They adopted an architecture called Mixture of Experts (MoE). Instead of one giant neural network, they split the intelligence into individual 'experts.'

• The Sea Agents: When you ask the AI to write a poem or paint a picture, the request is routed to the creative experts, the children of the dragon.

• The Mountain Agents: When you ask the AI to solve a math proof or debug code, the request is routed to the logic experts, the children of the fairy.

Just like the legend, the system works better when the children are separated and allowed to specialise in their own domains. The 'mountain child' doesn't try to swim, and the 'sea child' doesn't try to climb.

Agentic Swarms (50 Up, 50 Down)

We are now moving even further, from MoE models to autonomous agent swarms.

Imagine a future software company where it won't be one 'God AI' running the show. Instead, it will be a lineage of 100 specialised agents, all hatched from the same foundational egg but deployed to different environments. You may already be using a basic form of this approach when you create 'projects' on ChatGPT or 'Gems' on Gemini.

• The 50 in the Sea (The Flow): These agents live in the liquid world of the internet. They monitor stock prices, track social media trends, and handle logistics. They are fast, fluid, and reactive.

• The 50 in the Mountains (The Structure): These agents live in the solid world of your local servers. They manage the database, secure the firewall, and optimise the hardware. They are slow, sturdy, and defensive.

The Pact of Interoperability

The most beautiful part of the legend is the pact. Even though they separated, they remained loyal to each other.

"If the sea is attacked, the mountains will descend to fight. If the mountains starve, the sea will bring fish."

This is the biggest challenge in AI right now: interoperability.

We may already have great 'mountain' agents like law bots and great 'sea' agents like trading bots. But they often speak different languages, like estranged siblings.

For this Vietnamese analogy of AI to work, we will need a common protocol—a shared language that allows these specialised agents to coordinate. We need the mountain to trust the sea.

Conclusion: Diversity is Resilience

Lạc Long Quân and Âu Cơ understood that a monoculture is weak. If all 100 children stayed in the mountains, they would have no fish, and if all 100 went to the sea, they would have no timber.

By splitting the swarm, they covered all terrain and built a resilient nation that could survive both floods and droughts.

As we build our digital intelligence frameworks, we should stop looking for the one 'God bot' to save us. Instead, we should look for the sac of eggs and hatch a hundred specialised, smaller intelligences, send them to the edges of the network, and teach them the most important lesson of the legend:

Call your family when you need help.

Their story and subsequent tragedy in Malay literature mirror a familiar debate in today's world about loyalty and justice.

Hang Tuah was the embodiment of absolute loyalty. His motto was "Pantang Melayu derhaka" (A Malay never commits treason). If the Sultan ordered him to die, he would die. To Tuah, the system represented by the Sultan was absolute. Without the system, there is chaos.

Hang Jebat was the embodiment of justice and passion. When the Sultan wrongly sentenced Tuah to death due to false rumours of an affair with a court stewardess, Jebat snapped. He realised the system was flawed and unfair. So he rebelled, took over the palace, and wreaked havoc. Nobody, not even the most seasoned warriors, was able to stop him. He broke the rules to punish the injustice.

However, when Tuah was revealed to be alive, the Sultan ordered him to kill his best friend, Jebat.

Tuah obeyed. He fought Jebat for seven days. Jebat, seeing his brother alive, lowered his guard, asking, "I did this for you. Why do you fight me?"

Tuah replied with the coldest line in history: "Loyalty comes before brotherhood." And he stabbed Jebat to death.

For centuries, we asked: Who was right? The loyalist or the rebel?

In Web3, we fight this duel every day. But we use different names. We call it Code is Law vs. Social Consensus.

The Sultan is the Protocol

In a Decentralized Autonomous Organization (DAO) or a blockchain, the "Sultan" is the code.

When you deploy a smart contract to Ethereum, it is immutable, just like the Sultan's decree. It executes exactly as written and doesn't care if the outcome is fair or nice. It only cares about the instructions.

• Hang Tuah is the smart contract. He executes the code blindly. If the code says, "Transfer all money to Wallet A," Tuah does it. He does not ask if this is right. He executes it because the code is law.

• Hang Jebat is the human layer. He looks at the outcome and says, "Wait, this is wrong. There is a bug. The Sultan is drunk. We need to stop this."

In 2016, the most infamous event in crypto history played out this exact tragedy. It was called The DAO Hack. In that incident, a hacker exploited a bug in "The DAO" smart contract and started draining millions of dollars.

• The Tuah Argument (Code is Law): The system's purists argued, "The hacker didn't break the rules. The code allowed him to take the money. If we stop him, we are breaking the immutability of the blockchain. We must accept the loss. We must be loyal to the system."

When to be Tuah, When to be Jebat?

This is the hardest question in governance. If we are always Hang Tuah, we create a dystopian bureaucracy. We let bugs destroy people's lives because rules are rules. We let the innocent be executed because the paperwork was signed.

If we are always Hang Jebat, we create anarchy. If we rewrite the blockchain every time someone makes a mistake or loses money, the system has no integrity. Who decides what is fair? The mob? The rich?

A DAO needs both spirits to survive.

1. The Tuah Layer: The base layer, also known as Layer 1, must be rigid. It must be secure. It must be reliable. You can't change the laws of physics just because you are sad.

2. The Jebat Layer: The governance layer made up of the voters must have the power to upgrade the contract. We need a kill switch for the system and a way to say, "The Sultan is wrong."

The Death of Jebat

The tragedy of the story is that Jebat had to die.

In a DAO, when a hard fork happens, the old community often dies or fades away. Chaos cannot last forever. Order must be restored.

But Tuah was never the same after killing Jebat. He threw away his legendary Keris, the Taming Sari, into the river and vanished. He realized that a system without justice is hollow.

As we build these new digital nations, we must code them carefully. We want the stability of Tuah, but we must leave a backdoor for the spirit of Jebat.

The lesson we all need to understand from this story is that when a blockchain that cannot be corrected destroys the innocent, it is not a revolution. It just becomes another form of tyranny.

It is the story of Badang. Before he became a legend, he was a slave, small and underfed, tasked with the backbreaking work of clearing the jungle. He was weak and tired.

Every night, he set a fish trap in the river to get extra food, but the next morning he found the trap empty, filled only with bones. He kept watch and eventually caught the thief: a terrifying water spirit known as Hantu Air.

Badang, fueled by desperation, wrestled the entity and tied its hair to a rock. The spirit was terrified and begged for its life. "Let me go," it said, "and I will grant you any wish."

Badang didn't wish for gold nor a princess. He wished for strength. He wanted the power to do his work effortlessly without getting tired. The spirit agreed, but on one condition: Badang had to eat the spirit's vomit.

Badang swallowed his disgust, ate the substance, and instantly transformed. He could uproot trees with one hand. He could throw massive boulders into the sea. He became the champion of the Sultan, doing the work of a thousand men single-handedly.

In 2026, we are all Badang. And generative AI is the vomit we just swallowed.

The Ingestion of Humanity (Training Data)

The vomit detail in the folklore is gross, but it is the most accurate metaphor for Large Language Models (LLMs). How does an AI model like GPT-4 or Gemini get so smart? It doesn't go to school. It ingests the internet.

These models scrape billions of websites, Reddit threads, fan-fiction forums, Wikipedia articles, and open-source code. It swallows the collective output of the human species, including our poetry, our hate speech, our math, and our memes. It eats the 'vomit' of human civilisation.

And just like Badang, by consuming this massive, messy, chaotic dataset, the model gains a superpower. It condenses the strength of millions of human minds into a single interface.

The Strength of a Thousand (The 10x Engineer)

Before he met the spirit, Badang was limited by his biology. He could only chop one tree an hour. After the encounter, he cleared the entire forest by lunch. This is exactly how foundational models can help the modern worker.

• The Old Way: A junior coder writes 50 lines of code a day. They are limited by their memory and typing speed.

• The Badang Way: A coder using an AI agent (like GitHub Copilot or Cursor) writes 500 lines of code a day. They can even multitask while at it.

We are entering the era of the 'One-Person Unicorn.' Startups that used to need 50 employees can now be streamlined to just one person using AI agents to handle marketing, coding, and legal work. We have gained superhuman strength to do the work of an entire team without breaking a sweat.

The Rival from Kalinga (The Arms Race)

In the legend, Badang’s strength attracted challengers. The King of Kalinga (India) sent his own champion strongman to test Badang. They competed in lifting rocks and wrestling. This mirrors the current AI arms race.

It is now no longer enough to just "be strong." Everyone has access to the Spirit now. If you are using GPT-4, and your rival is using GPT-5, you will lose.

The competition has shifted from "Human vs. Human" to "My AI vs. Your AI." We are just the handlers; the spirits are doing the wrestling.

The Singapore Stone (The Legacy)

Badang’s most famous feat was throwing a massive rock from a hill into the mouth of the Singapore River. That rock, known as the Singapore Stone, sat there for centuries. It was inscribed with ancient script that no one could fully decipher. This is the final, haunting parallel.

When we use generative AI, we produce massive amounts of content, including code, articles, and art, all at superhuman speed. We are throwing our 'Singapore Stones' all over the internet. But do we understand what is written on them?

Often, AI generates code that works, but we don't know how. It hallucinates facts that sound true but aren't. We are filling the world with powerful artifacts, inscribed with a language we sometimes struggle to decipher.

Conclusion: Respect the Source

Badang became a hero, but he remained a servant to the Sultan. His strength was a tool, not his identity.

As we adopt these agentic AI tools, we must remember the lesson of the river. We have gained immense power, yes. But we got it by consuming the collective knowledge of the past.

We are strong only because we stand on the shoulders (and the data) of everyone who came before us. Use the strength wisely. Clear the forest, build the kingdom, but don't forget where the power came from.

According to the Sejarah Melayu (The Malay Annals), in 1299, Prince Sang Nila Utama, a restless royal from Palembang in present-day Indonesia, was hunting on the island of Bintan when he saw a beach of white sand across the water. He was informed by his chief minister that the island was called Temasek.

He decided to cross the channel to claim it, but halfway there, the sky turned black. A sudden massive storm hit his fleet, and the ship began to take on water. His crew threw the cargo overboard, including their rice, water jars, and even their weapons, but the ship was still too heavy. It started sinking.

The captain then told the prince, "The sea demands your most precious possession."

Sang Nila Utama took off his heavy golden crown, which was the symbol of his power, wealth, and his identity, and cast it into the dark waves below.

Instantly, the storm ceased. The sea became calm. The ship glided safely to the shores of Temasek, where he would spot the legendary Lion (Singa) and eventually rename the island as Singapura.

For over 700 years, we read this as a story about magic. But in the era of Web3, we now realise it can also be about consensus mechanisms. Specifically, it is the perfect explanation of Proof of Stake (PoS).

Fighting the Storm (Proof of Work vs. Proof of Stake)

In the early days of crypto, we learned about Bitcoin and how it secured the network using Proof of Work (PoW). This mechanism is equivalent to fighting a storm with oars and muscle, as it uses massive amounts of electricity and hardware to 'mine' the blocks. But while it is effective, it's also slow and burns a lot of energy.

However, as technology progressed over time, blockchain has moved to newer models that use up less power and hardware resources, going from mining blocks to validating through staking. As a result, modern blockchains are faster, cheaper, and more environmentally friendly, like Ethereum 2.0 and Solana, which use Proof of Stake (PoS).

The logic of PoS is identical to the logic of Sang Nila Utama: security comes from sacrifice.

In a PoS system, the 'validators' are the people who run the network/the ship, and they are not necessarily the ones with the biggest computers. They are chosen because they have staked their own money into the network.

To become a validator, you must stake your own 'golden crown,' which could be 32 ETH, for example, and lock it into the protocol. You throw it into the sea of the network.

The Crown is the Collateral

Why did the sea calm down after the prince threw his crown? In this metaphor, the sea is the network, and the storm is the chaos of bad actors, hackers, and volatility.

If the prince (the validator) has nothing to lose, he might act recklessly, like steering the ship into the rocks. But since his crown is at the bottom of the sea, he is financially committed to the safety of the ship.

• If he steers the ship safely (validates transactions correctly), he gets rewards (yield).

• If he tries to sink the ship (validate fake transactions), the protocol destroys his crown. This is called slashing.

The stability of Singapura was built on the fact that its founder had 'skin in the game.' He left his wealth in the waters.

There is a famous footnote to the legend: There were no lions in Singapore.

A tourist keeps their crown and lets the ship sink. A founder throws the crown in to stabilize the vessel and builds a city where they land.

For centuries, warriors, monks, and Muay Thai fighters have visited masters known as Ajahns (or Ajarn) to receive Sak Yant—sacred geometrical designs tapped into the skin by hand with a long spike.

These tattoos are believed to grant specific powers: Kong Krapan for invincibility, Metta Mahaniyom to gain popularity, or protection from spirits. But there is a fundamental rule about a Sak Yant that makes it different from a gold necklace or a talisman.

You cannot sell it.

You cannot peel a Sak Yant off your back and trade it to a stranger for cash because the magic is tied to your skin. It is attached to the pain you endured during the ritual and bound to a set of rules known as precepts that you promised to keep.

If you cut it off, it just ends up as dead skin. The value is intrinsically linked to the identity of the holder.

In the world of Web3, we are finally realising that we need digital assets that behave exactly like Sak Yant. We call them Soulbound Tokens (SBTs).

The Problem with Selling Everything

Until recently, almost everything in crypto was a transferable token, from Bitcoin to standard NFTs. You could buy, sell, or transfer it. This is great for money but terrible for identity.

Imagine if you could buy a Harvard degree on OpenSea. If the degree is just a standard NFT, a billionaire could buy it from a graduate. Suddenly, the billionaire 'owns' the degree even if he didn't do the work. The degree becomes meaningless because it has been separated from the person who actually earned it.

This is where the concept of the Soulbound Token comes in.

Vitalik’s "Sak Yant"

In 2022, Vitalik Buterin, the creator of Ethereum, published a famous paper titled "Decentralized Society: Finding Web3's Soul."

He argued that for the internet to mature, we need tokens that represent relationships and credentials, not just money. He called them 'soulbound' based on the game World of Warcraft, where powerful items cannot be dropped or traded.

The SBT is a digital Sak Yant.

Why Do We Need Cyber-Tattoos?

Why would anyone want a token they can't sell? For the same reason a Muay Thai fighter wants a protective tattoo: reputation.

1. The Digital Resume: Instead of uploading a PDF resume, which anyone can fake, your wallet will show glowing SBTs verified by your past employers. Whether you have worked at Google or shipped code for Project X, it is unforgeable proof of your history.

2. Uncollateralized Loans (Trust): Right now, to borrow crypto, you have to put up money as collateral. Why? Because the bank doesn't know who you are. With SBTs, you could show a 'good borrower' Sak Yant with a history of paying back loans on time. The protocol sees this tattoo and trusts you, lending you money based on your reputation, not your collateral.

3. Sybil Resistance (One Person, One Vote): In DAOs (Decentralized Autonomous Organizations) where decisions are made through online voting, one rich person can buy 1,000 wallets to rig the vote. But if the community requires a 'citizenship' SBT, like a tattoo that proves you are a unique human, the rich person loses their power. You can buy 1,000 wallets, but you can't buy 1,000 distinct human souls.

The Wai Khru (Respecting the Source)

In Thai culture, once a year, disciples return to their master for the Wai Khru ceremony. The Ajahn re-blesses the tattoos and recharges the magic. If the disciple has behaved badly, like not following the precepts, the tattoo loses its power. SBTs have a similar feature: revocability.

If a university discovers you cheated on your final exam after you graduated, they can 'burn' your SBT degree, and the tattoo fades from your digital skin. This creates a system of accountability where your digital reputation is alive, and it requires maintenance, integrity, and good precepts to keep glowing.

The Future of Skin

We are moving toward a future where our digital wallets won't just hold our money; they will hold our history. We will walk through the digital metaverse like old master monks, our virtual bodies covered in the ink of our accomplishments.

While a standard NFT is what you have in your pocket, an SBT is what is written in your heart. As the Ajahns have known for centuries, what is written on the soul is far more powerful than what is held in the hand.

The legend goes that in the 15th century, a fisherman named Lê Thận cast his net into the Chu River. He pulled up a heavy iron bar, so he threw it back into the water. Then it happened again, and again for the third time. He finally realised it was the blade of a sword. Later, the rebel leader Lê Lợi found a glowing hilt in a banyan tree. When he put the two pieces together, they fit perfectly.

The sword was assumed to be in compliance with heaven's will. It glowed in the dark and made Lê Lợi and his men grow taller and stronger. The men became invincible against the Ming invaders.

But the most important part of the story wasn't the fighting. It’s the ending.

After the invaders were successfully repelled, Lê Lợi founded the Lê Dynasty and became emperor of Vietnam. One day, while he was boating on the lake, a giant golden turtle (Kim Quy) surfaced and spoke: "The work is done. Return the sword to the Dragon King."

The emperor Lê Lợi understood. The sword wasn't his property; he was just the custodian. He threw the sword to the turtle, who caught it and vanished beneath the waves.

This story will teach us everything we need to know about the most misunderstood technology of our time: the NFT (Non-Fungible Token).

The Sword Was Not Fungible

To understand NFTs, you first have to understand the concept of fungibility.

A dollar bill is fungible. If I borrow a dollar from you and give you back a different dollar bill, you don't care. They are identical. They have the same value. But the sword Thuận Thiên was non-fungible.

If Lê Lợi had lost the sword in battle and his blacksmith made a copy, it wouldn't be the same. The copy wouldn't glow, and it certainly wouldn't have granted him the will of heaven. This is because the value of the sword wasn't just its sharpness (utility). It was also its provenance (history) and uniqueness.

This is exactly what an NFT is. It is a digital certificate that says, "This specific image/sword/ticket is the original. It is the one that was pulled from the lake."

The Blade in the Net (The Metadata)

When the fisherman first pulled the iron bar from the water, it looked like scrap metal. It was only when the blade was combined with the hilt and the story that it became powerful.

In the crypto world, we see people buying "ugly monkey pictures" for millions of dollars, and we laugh. "It's just a JPEG," we say. "I can right-click and save it."

You can also ask a blacksmith to forge a replica of Lê Lợi’s sword. You can hang it on your wall. But it won't turn you into an emperor.

The "Right-Click Save" version is just the scrap metal. It lacks the metadata—the magical inscription written on the blockchain that proves who created it, who owned it before Lê Lợi, and why it matters.

In Web3, value doesn't come from the pixels. It comes from the Chain of Custody.

The Golden Turtle (The Validator)

Who decides if the sword is real? In the legend, it was the Golden Turtle, Kim Quy, who represents the smart contract or the validator.

When Emperor Lê Lợi returned the sword, the Turtle didn't say, "Let me call the bank or heaven to check if this is yours." The Turtle knew. The relationship between the sword and the emperor was absolute and transparent.

In the future, we will use NFTs for more than just art.

• Deeds to houses: You won't need a lawyer to prove you own your home; the "Golden Turtle" (the blockchain) will verify the digital sword in your wallet.

• Diplomas: You won't need to mail a transcript; your university will drop a "Diploma NFT" into your wallet that proves you did the work.

The Return (The Loan)

The beautiful twist of the Vietnamese legend is that the emperor didn't get to keep the sword forever. It was on loan from the Dragon King. This mirrors a new concept in DeFi (Decentralized Finance) called lending protocols or flash loans.

You can borrow an asset (like a massive amount of capital), use it to perform a task (win a war/execute a trade), and then you must return it to the protocol (the Lake) at the end of the transaction. If you don't return it, the transaction fails—it's as if it never happened.

Lê Lợi honoured the smart contract. He returned the asset. And because he did, his legacy was secured.

The Legend Lives On

We tend to think of digital items as fake and physical items as real.

But stories like the Legend of the Restored Sword remind us that humans have always valued things for their story, not just their atoms. A rusty sword in a museum can still be worth millions because of the hand that held it.

NFTs are just the digital evolution of this ancient human behaviour. They allow us to attach legends to digital objects.

So the next time you see a "useless" digital collectible, remember the iron bar in the fisherman's net. It might just be the 'Will of Heaven', waiting for the right hilt.

For thousands of years, the rice farmers of Malaysia have believed that rice is not just a plant. It is a living entity with a soul that is blessed by the divine and must be respected and treated with love and care. They call it Semangat Padi (The Rice Soul).

In the old stories, the rice soul is fragile. By following the ancient ways of growing and harvesting them based on the rules of nature, the entire village will be blessed with abundance and prosperity. However, if you break these rules, use harsh words and actions, or cut the stalk roughly without asking for permission, the spirit will flee. The rice will turn bitter, or the harvest will fail.

So, the farmers developed a language of intimacy. They would perform Semangat Padi rituals, whispering sweet words to the crop. They would treat each plant as an individual by cutting the stalks one by one and keeping the harvesting process gentle so the rice spirit wouldn't see metal blades and be frightened.

It was a relationship of deep, hyper-attentive listening. The farmer had to feel and understand what the rice needed.

Then came the Industrial Revolution. We introduced massive combine harvesters. We replaced the whispers with chemical fertilisers. We stopped listening to the spirit and started treating the land like a factory. We gained scale, but we lost the connection.

But now, new technologies are emerging that are strangely bringing us back to the old ways. They are Agritech and the Internet of Things (IoT).

The New Rituals of Listening

Most people think blockchains are all-knowing supercomputers. They aren't.

A blockchain (like Ethereum or Solana) is actually a hermit. It lives in a perfectly secure, mathematical box. It only knows everything that happens inside its own network, like who sent money to whom and which wallet holds which token.

But it is blind to the outside world.

A smart contract on Ethereum does not know the current weather in Singapore or what the traffic situation is like in Jakarta. It would not know the real-time price of Tesla stock. It doesn't even know who's playing in the World Cup.

This is a huge problem. Imagine you want to build a crop insurance app on the blockchain that automatically pays farmers if it doesn't rain for a month.

• The Contract: "If rain is less than 10 mm, pay the farmer."

• The Blockchain: "I am ready to pay. But... did it rain? I have no eyes. I cannot see the sky."

The contract is useless because the blockchain cannot "see" the natural world. It needs someone to tell it the truth.

Just as the Bomoh relies on specific rituals to ensure the connection is clear, oracles rely on decentralized consensus. They don't just ask one source; they ask hundreds, averaging the answers to ensure they aren't being tricked.

In folklore, there is nothing more dangerous than a corrupted Bomoh.

She is the ultimate example of bait-and-switch. The promise of something beautiful that delivers a nightmare.

In the digital realm of Web3, AI, and the metaverse, we may think we are safe from jungle spirits. After all, we are sitting in air-conditioned rooms behind firewalls.

But these days, the Pontianak has migrated. She doesn't haunt banana trees anymore; she now lurks around Discord servers, Telegram chats, and your email inbox, promising you everything.

We can now say she's started phishing.

The Sweet Smell of Jasmine (The Lure)

The modern digital Pontianak doesn't appear as a woman in a white dress. She appears as an opportunity that's too good to resist.

She is that Direct Message (DM) from an attractive profile you don't recognise, striking up a conversation about crypto. She is that urgent email that looks exactly like it came from MetaMask or Coinbase support, warning you that your account is compromised. She is the bot in a Discord server asking you to connect your wallet to claim a free NFT airdrop.

Just like the scent of flowers on a lonely road, these things are designed to bypass your logical brain and trigger your lizard brain. They appeal to you either through greed by offering you free money, your fear by claiming your account might be locked, or just simply using lust through a beautiful stranger that just wants to talk.

They look official. They look professional. They smell sweet.

So, you pull over. You click the link. You reply to the DM.

The Hole in the Back (The Malicious Contract)

According to legend, the Pontianak uses her beauty to hide the horrific emptiness inside her through the hole in her back.

In tech, this is the malicious website or smart contract.

When you click that link in the phishing email, you are taken to a website that looks identical to the real thing. It’s a perfect clone. The beautiful facade is maintained.

When you decide to type in your password, or when you connect your digital wallet to claim the airdrop, you aren't interacting with the real service. Instead, you are actually encountering the hole in the back.

You think you are signing a transaction to receive a free NFT. In reality, the code hidden beneath the surface is a "setApprovalForAll" function. You are granting the Pontianak permission to drain every single asset from your wallet while you sit there watching the screen.

By the time the illusion glitches and you realise what happened, your "internal organs" in the form of your Ethereum, your Solana, and your expensive JPEGs are all gone.

The Nail in the Neck (The Private Key)

There is one crucial part of the Pontianak story that every tech user needs to remember. It is actually the only way to survive her.

Legend has it that the Pontianak can be tamed. If you are brave enough to catch her and drive a nail into the hole at the nape of her neck, she ceases to be a monster. Instead, she becomes a docile, beautiful human woman, sometimes even a dutiful wife, as long as the nail stays put.

The nail is the control mechanism. Whoever holds the nail controls the entity.

In the world of blockchain, you hold this nail. It is called your private key or seed phrase.

Your seed phrase (those 12 or 24 random words you got when you set up your wallet) is the master key to your digital identity and assets. It is the nail in the neck of your financial life.

• If you keep this nail secure, your assets will serve you. They are docile.

• If you give that nail to someone else by typing those 12 words into a fake website or giving them to a "support agent" in a DM, you have pulled the nail out.

Almost immediately, the beautiful promise becomes a monster. The scammer now has total control. They don't need your password; they already have the nail.

Don't Stop on the Lonely Road

The digital world is a new kind of jungle. It's full of incredible riches and wonders, but it's also filled with ancient spirits wearing new masks.

The lesson of the Pontianak is about skepticism. If something looks too good to be true on that lonely digital road, it probably is. If a stranger approaches you with overwhelming beauty or promises of free wealth, roll up your windows and ignore them.

Never click on suspicious links. Never type your seed phrase into a website. And remember that real support agents will never DM you first.

Keep your nail in your own pocket, and stay safe on the road away from the Hantu.

For the uninitiated, the Toyol is a small, child-like spirit with green skin and big red eyes. It is not a typical ghost you read about or accidentally bump into; it is a ghost you hire. A master, usually someone desperate for wealth, summons a Toyol through a shaman known as a Bomoh and strikes a pact. The deal is simple: the Toyol will sneak into the houses of your neighbours, slip through cracks in the walls, and steal their money, jewelry, and gold, bringing it all back to you.

You get rich while you sleep. You get wealth without work.

But there is a catch. Just like anything that involves the supernatural. There is always a catch.

The Toyol requires maintenance. You must treat it like your own child, and you must feed it. Sometimes you give it milk or treat it with sweets, and sometimes, a few drops of your own blood from your thumb.

If you forget to feed it, or if you get too greedy and send it to steal from a house protected by stronger magic, the Toyol doesn't just stop working. It comes home, hungry and angry, and it eats you.

In the world of Web3 and cryptocurrency, we like to think that we are evolved. We think we are men of science and math. We don't believe in spirits.

But look closely at the "passive income" strategies of the modern crypto trader, and you’ll realise: We are still summoning Toyols. We just call them trading bots.

As a crypto investor, you would like "passive income" from your assets, but the risk levels here are worlds apart.

Both involve putting your crypto assets to work to earn a return (APY) rather than letting them sit idle. However, the difference is where you do it and for how long.

• Staking: Think of a secure steel bank vault. You lock your coins away to help secure the blockchain network itself (like Ethereum or Solana) while earning interest. It is a slower, steadier, lower-risk method. You are the security guard getting paid a salary. Some exchanges also offer flexible staking, which allows you to unlock them when you need it. However, the rates are usually lower.

• Yield Farming: Think of a busy farmer running frantically between different fields. He is chasing the highest crop yield of the day. In DeFi, this is an active strategy where you move assets between different protocols (lending pools, liquidity pairs) to chase the highest interest rates. It requires constant attention and carries higher risk.

The Takeaway: While staking is a savings bond, yield farming is like a day job.

21. Margin vs. Futures

You want to trade with more money than you have. How you borrow and how much leverage you add to your initial amount will matter.

Both allow you to use leverage by borrowing funds to multiply your buying power (and your risk). However, one of them increases your risk of liquidation.

• Margin Trading: Imagine a homeowner holding the physical key to their house but dragging a heavy iron ball labeled "LOAN." You actually own the asset (Spot), but you borrowed money to buy it. You can move the asset out of the account (once the debt is paid).

• Futures Trading: Imagine two people shaking hands over a betting slip with the house far in the distance. You never touch the house; you never own the key. You are simply buying a contract that tracks the price of the house. You are betting on the price direction, not buying the asset itself.

The Takeaway: With margin, you own the asset (and the debt); with futures, you own a contract (and the bet).

16. Fiat vs. Stablecoin

You may have heard that "cash is king," but on the blockchain, the king has a digital clone.

Both are currencies that can be used for everyday payments, and they usually aim to hold the exact same value (e.g., $1 = $1). However, there's a slight difference between them.

• Fiat: Picture a wrinkled, physical paper dollar bill. This is government-issued money whose value comes from law ("by decree"). It relies on traditional banking hours and borders. Moving it internationally can take anywhere from a few seconds to days.

• Stablecoin: Now, there's a glowing, holographic "digital twin" of that same dollar living entirely in code. A stablecoin (like USDC or USDT) lives on the blockchain. It is pegged to the value of fiat (it stays at $1), but it is programmable, works 24/7, and can zip across the world in seconds without needing a bank's permission. Payment providers like Visa are integrating them as a settlement layer for real-world transactions too.

The Takeaway: While fiat is analog money that you can stuff into your pockets, stablecoin is programmable money in your digital wallet.

17. CeFi vs. DeFi

You want to earn interest through your crypto tokens or simply trade. You can either do it in the safety of a guarded building or seamlessly through a protocol.

Both are financial systems where you can lend, borrow, and trade your assets. However, one of them requires you to fully trust your funds with people and regulators.

• CeFi (Centralized Finance): Imagine a banker in a suit taking your money into a private back office marked "Employees Only." You can't see what he does with it. You have to sign paper contracts and trust the company (like financial institutions and banks) to be honest and not lose your funds.

• DeFi (Decentralized Finance): Imagine a transparent machine made of glass pipes. You drop your coin into it, and you can see exactly where it travels every inch of the way. You don't need to trust a middleman; you just need to trust the code in the form of smart contracts that runs the machine. Some notable DeFi protocols that have moved billions of dollars over the years include UniSwap, Aave, Lido, etc.

The Takeaway: CeFi relies on trusting people, while DeFi relies on trusting code.

18. Limit Order vs. Market Order

You open your trading app and prepare to buy or sell that token. Do you want to do so at the perfect price, or do you want it right now?

Both are trading instructions you give to an exchange to buy or sell an asset. It's just a matter of when that order gets fulfilled and at what price.

• Limit Order: Think of a fisherman sitting patiently on a dock. He has a specific hook set for a specific fish. He is willing to wait all day for the price to hit his target. If the price never gets there, the trade never happens.

• Market Order: Think of a shopper rushing through a supermarket grabbing whatever is on the shelf right now. A slight difference of a few cents doesn't matter; you just want the asset immediately. You are guaranteed to get it, but the price might slip slightly by the time you reach the register.

Limit is for patience (specific price), while market is for speed (immediate execution).

13. Token Burn vs. Token Lock

You hear that tokens are being "removed" from the market. But are they gone for good, or just hiding?

Both remove tokens from immediate circulation so they cannot be sold right now. However, one is permanent while the other isn't.

• Token Burn: Imagine throwing paper money into a roaring fireplace. It turns to ash. Those notes are destroyed forever and can never be spent again. Projects do this to permanently reduce the total supply, which creates scarcity among the remaining tokens. For example, if a project has 21 million tokens and 5 million are burned, the market is left with 16 million tokens.

• Token Lock: Imagine placing money inside a transparent glass time capsule and burying it in the ground with a countdown timer. You can see the money, and you know it still exists. When the timer hits zero (vesting period ends), the capsule opens, and that money returns to the market. If 21 million tokens include 5 million locked for two years, there will only be 16 million tokens circulating in the market during that period. Once those 5 million tokens are unlocked, the project is back to 21 million tokens.

The Takeaway: A burn is a permanent goodbye; a lock is just a "see you later."

14. Seed Phrase vs. Private Key

You have a password to log in to your account. In the world of crypto, you will also have a password for your password. Confused?

Both are secret codes that allow you to access and move your funds. However, you will need one of them to open the other.

• Seed Phrase: Think of a large, ornate "Master Skeleton Key" that opens every single door in a hotel. This is your 12-to-24-word recovery phrase. It can generate and control every wallet address you ever create on that device. If you lose this, you lose the whole hotel.

• Private Key: Think of a single silver key that only opens Room 101. It grants access to just one specific address within your wallet. If you lose this key, you will only lose access to that one room, unless you have the master key to restore it.

The Takeaway: The private key opens one door; the seed phrase owns the building, like a front gate.

15. Bull Market vs. Bear Market

Everyone talks about animals in finance. It’s not a zoo; it’s about the vibe.

Both are inspired by the animal kingdom and describe the overall mood, direction, and sentiment of the crypto/stock market.

• Bull Market: Picture a sunny summer festival. The energy is high, everyone is partying, and there is a bull charging up a hill for some reason. This symbolism represents optimism. Prices are going up (green), people are buying, and everyone feels like a genius. It's called a bull because they attack by thrusting their horns upwards.

• Bear Market: Picture a cold, snowy winter landscape. A bear is hibernating deep in a cave to survive the freeze, representing pessimism. Prices are dropping (red), people are selling or holding tight, and activity slows down. It's called a bear because they attack by swiping their paws downward.

The Takeaway: bulls charge up (optimism); bears hunker down (pessimism).

10. Market Cap vs. Fully Diluted Valuation (FDV)

You see a coin with a low value and think it's a steal. But are you looking at the whole picture? Some projects have all their coins in circulation, while others have a certain amount locked for future release.

Both are ways to measure the total value of a crypto project, but one is usually higher than the other.

• Market Cap: Imagine a single slice of pizza sitting on a plate. This slice represents the coins that are actually in circulation right now. The price is based on the scarcity of just that slice (current price x circulating supply).

• Fully Diluted Valuation (FDV): Now, imagine the outline of the entire pizza box showing where the other 7 slices will eventually be. FDV calculates the value if all the future coins (which are currently locked or haven't been created yet) were released today (current price x total supply).

The Takeaway: Market cap is what it's worth now; FDV warns you if the market is about to be flooded with new supply later. This eventually leads to a form of controlled inflation, which might affect the price of the coin you're holding.

11. Mining vs. Minting

"I want to make some crypto." Okay, do you need a pickaxe or a button?

Both are methods of creating new coins or tokens, but one requires hardware while the other just runs on software. The difference is more than just a 't'.

• Mining: Picture a gold prospector in a dark cave, sweating and physically chipping away at a rock wall. This represents Proof-of-Work (PoW). It requires massive amounts of electricity and computational "sweat" to solve puzzles and extract new coins (like Bitcoin).

• Minting: Picture a clean, automated industrial press. You press a button, and a coin is stamped out instantly. This is how tokens are created via Proof-of-Stake (PoS) or when you create an NFT. It’s done via code commands and validation, without the intense energy expenditure.

The Takeaway: Mining is high-powered labor, while minting is digital administration. You can't mine an NFT, but you can always mint one.

Did You Know? Moving from PoW to PoS is one major reason why Ethereum went from costing $$$ in gas fees for transactions a few years ago to just a few cents today.

12. App vs. dApp

You use apps every day, from buying things to banking. Some of these platforms belong to large corporations, which store and manage your data. But in Web3, the app doesn't answer to a CEO.

Both are software applications you use on your phone or computer to get things done, but the difference is who owns your data.

• App: Think of a marionette puppet. It moves and dances, but if you look up, there are strings leading to a giant hand in a business suit (the company). But if the company (or the government) doesn't like what the puppet is doing, they can pull the strings or cut them entirely. They control and manage your data.

• dApp (Decentralized App): Think of a wind-up robot. It walks autonomously and runs on smart contracts within the blockchain. Once it's deployed, it works according to the rules of the code, and users own and manage their data. No single CEO or company can easily switch it off or ban you from using it. Operational updates are decided by a group of stakeholders who are active users themselves, not shareholders sitting in a boardroom.

The Takeaway: An app is rented land; a dApp is open territory.

7. Bridge vs. Swap

You have some crypto like Bitcoin (BTC), and you want to trade it for a different kind of crypto like Ethereum (ETH). Sounds simple, right? That depends entirely on where that crypto lives.

While both are ways to exchange your crypto assets. They are two different processes.

• Bridge: Imagine you are on an island (the Ethereum network) and you want to move your goods to a completely different island (the Solana network). You can't just walk there; you need to cross a bridge. Bridging is the act of moving assets from one blockchain network to a completely different one (e.g., Ethereum to Solana). It takes a bit more time and usually costs a fee.

• Swap: Imagine you are at a local market stall on that same island. You are simply trading an apple for an orange with the vendor. You never leave the island. Swapping is exchanging one asset for another within the same blockchain network (e.g., USDC to ETH). It is quick, usually cheaper, and can be achieved on most crypto exchanges using the 'swap' or 'convert' function.

The Takeaway: If you are changing networks, you use a Bridge. If you are staying put, you simply Swap.

8. Public Key vs. Private Key

When you set up a wallet, you get two long strings of code. Mixing these up is the single most dangerous mistake a beginner can make.

Both are cryptographic codes used to access and manage your wallet. However, one of them has to be a secret only known to you.

• Public Key: Think of this as the mail slot on your front door. It reveals your address to the public. You can safely share this with anyone so they can send you funds. You want the mailman to know where you live!

• Private Key: Think of this as the physical metal key that unlocks your front door. It is your password. You must never share it with anyone, because it grants full access to your funds inside. If a stranger gets your house key, they can walk in and take everything.

The Takeaway: Share your public key to get money; hide your private key to keep your money.

9. Hard Fork vs. Soft Fork

Blockchains are software, and software needs updates. However, not all updates are created equal.

While both are updates to the blockchain's software rules, one requires the network to split into a brand new one.

• Hard Fork: Imagine a path in a forest that splits into a permanent "Y" shape. You have to choose one direction, and you can't go back. This is a permanent split where the new rules are incompatible with the old ones, creating two separate blockchains (e.g., Bitcoin vs. Bitcoin Cash). The community actually divides into two camps.

• Soft Fork: Imagine that same forest path simply getting repaved. It’s a backward-compatible upgrade. The new rules still work with the old ones, so everyone stays on the same single chain. No one gets left behind or forced to move. This is how SegWit came about on the Bitcoin network, allowing faster and cheaper transactions.

The Takeaway: A soft fork is a gentle upgrade; a hard fork is a permanent divorce.

Did You Know? The Ethereum (ETH) we know today is actually the result of a hard fork. That's why it coexists with Ethereum Classic (ETC).

You would come across these terms when you're trying to stake crypto to earn interest. Here's the difference.

APR: If you stake $1000 of your tokens with 3% APR, each year, you get 3% ($30) on top of the original $1000, which remains your base amount forever.

APY: Your $1000 at 3% APY becomes $1030, and then the next year, you get 3% on $1030, and then 3% of $1060 and so on. This is also known as 'compound interest', where your base amount changes according to the APY, like pushing a rock up a hill as it collects more material until the rock becomes much bigger. (Don't mind the Sisyphus reference)

5. Hot vs Cold Wallet

If you're holding your crypto in a wallet, you would need your keys to access it. The main difference?

Hot Wallet: This is a software application/browser extension that's connected to the internet, where you can access Web3 or DeFi platforms by signing in and doing your thing. The problem is, if you're not careful with your keys, you'll be vulnerable to getting your funds stolen. E.g., Trust Wallet, MetaMask, etc.

Cold Wallet: This is a physical device for offline storage, like a safe or an external hard drive. The only way to lose your funds is by losing the whole device.

6. PoW (Proof-of-Work) vs PoS (Proof-of-Stake)

These are the 2 most common mechanisms that secure the network and verify transactions.

PoW: The original mechanism that powers Bitcoin and pre-2022 Ethereum. It requires plenty of electricity and computing power, like GPUs, to make a transaction. In return, the miners running these machines earn rewards.

PoS: A less power- and labour-intensive method where, instead of mining, the network uses validators who lock their tokens into the network to process transactions. The more tokens they lock, the more power they provide. This is the reason why post-2022 Ethereum fees don't cost as much as they used to and you hear fewer complaints about how crypto burns too much electricity.

2. CEX (Centralised Exchange) vs DEX (Decentralised Exchange)

The crypto apps we know are usually centralized exchanges (CEX) that you use to trade your digital assets, which would usually require you to register and do KYC and are bound by regulations. Also, you do not own your keys. On the other hand, decentralized exchanges (DEX) are not owned by anyone, and you will need to log in using a Web3-enabled browser or through your hot wallet. Everything is under your control.

3. Layer-1 vs Layer-2.

The original layer of blockchain provides the infrastructure base where transactions happen, like the OG Bitcoin and Ethereum. However, they are too slow and expensive for everyday use, so the solution was to create Layer-2 mechanisms, that run on top of the original Layer-1s, like a high-speed flyover, to make things faster and cheaper with much lower fees.
