            <content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>When building a motorhome, fiberglass is the top choice. This composite material is based on fiberglass soaked in polyester or epoxy resin. Due to its unique makeup, fiberglass embodies lightness, strength, durability, and excellent protection against negative conditions. Primary features of fiberglass include: High strength at minimal thickness. At just 2 mm thickness, fiberglass can rival or exceed the strength of 6 mm plywood. Ability to withstand moisture and temperature shifts. The material is moisture-proof, does not rot, swell or suffer heat damage. Ability to fabricate complex and bent elements. Unlike plywood and MDF, fiberglass easily takes any bends and shapes, allowing the creation of ergonomic shower trays, rounded furniture corners, and non-standard elements. Moderate weight. This contributes to reducing the overall motorhome mass, important for fuel economy and safety. Durability. With careful use, the material lasts from 50 to 100 years or more without serious damage. Short durability Plywood material. In conditions of poor protection (moisture, heat, lack of protection), plywood lasts up to 12 months when leaking. In simple dampness conditions, lifespan is up to 2 years. If plywood is waterproof and there is condensation with heat, lifespan reaches up to 5 years. In the best conditions — waterproof plywood with varnish, constant ventilation, and absence of condensation and heat — lifespan up to 10 years. Exposure to condensation or leaks may cause lightweight plywood to delaminate and mold after 12 months. If glue and varnish are waterproof and coating is whole, plywood serves up to 5 years. In quality varnish, ventilation, and moisture protection conditions, lifespan reaches up to 8 years. Lightweight plywood is a wood-based material that absorbs moisture, and even waterproof plywood can hold water, resulting in mold after one season. MDF can deteriorate already after 6 months, water-resistant MDF up to 2 years, water-resistant MDF coated with varnish serves about 3 years, Heat at +50 °C negatively affects MDF; glue loses properties and it delaminates, Under ideal conditions, no heat, protected by varnish and ventilated, lifespan up to 7 years, Not ideal material but often chosen for ease in manufacturing and handling. ABS plastic withstands up to 1-2 years under heavy load, heat is the primary cause, at +60 °C mechanical strength is lost and severe degradation begins, especially with frequent heating to such or higher temperatures (which is quite common in summer), if the operation is not very intensive but inside the van, the plastic’s lifespan reaches 6-7 years. Fiberglass does not absorb moisture and does not break down when exposed to it, withstands vibrational loads, even in poor conditions the lifespan may reach 30 years. Minimum lifespans are what I wrote, and maximum lifespans if you drive little will increase by no more than 50%. An example of fiberglass durability is yachts that have sailed seas for decades. Ability to produce complex shapes. Plywood, lightweight plywood, and MDF have slight flexibility. Obtaining non-standard shapes requires complex and expensive processing, or they cannot be made at all. ABS plastic is a factory-produced material and requires such manufacturing. Panels can be clad by purchasing flat sheets, but this will be very expensive. Additionally, ABS plastic is valued for its high strength in very thin sheets. However, thin sheets are difficult to join using ordinary tools. In fact, for home builders this is one of the most inconvenient materials. With fiberglass, you can manually form any curved elements, which is especially important for rational space use and forming functional zones inside the motorhome, however, certain nuances exist in manufacturing and pricing, cost can be either high or lower than the price of normal plywood. Why fiberglass is the preferred option for DIY conversions? The material consists of fiberglass saturated with polyester resin, giving parts high strength and many benefits, providing the material’s indispensability for self-use: The material is easy to shape when raw and becomes strong after curing Saving space by forming curved and non-standard elements, helping to avoid bulky corners and gaps. A fiberglass shower tray can be created perfectly fitting the size and shape of the vehicle, side openings on vans often closed can be left as is but with extra space, this creates the possibility to install the bed at the topmost level, not possible with plywood or MDF. Material’s resistance to vibrations and shocks. When the vehicle moves, vibrations occur which fiberglass endures without cracks or chips. While other materials do not withstand vibration, fiberglass does not react to it. Only a minimal set of tools and training videos is needed, no professional machine shop or complex equipment required. Nevertheless, ways exist to do this about 20 times cheaper, even cheaper than plywood, but no one tells about them. Because buying factory products 30-50% more expensive, you acquire durability and won’t see rot in 5-10 years It happens that a homemade MDF motorhome during a six-month vacation in a hot country becomes completely ruined I have observed many times how after 3 years the entire van paneling was replaced due to mold and rust on the screws This is an absolutely irrational approach If we talk about self-builders, who are the majority, some think they can sheathe a motorhome with plywood in a couple of weeks In reality, without knowledge and recommendations, the sheathing can last for years Sometimes self-build with MDF and light plywood dragged on more than 3 years, after which it had to be redone because materials were damaged by moisture. I didn’t provide construction time for different materials because it depends on knowledge. Often people ignore knowledge, buying expensive tools thinking it’s enough. In reality, this is not true, knowledge has always been paramount. As an example, info on working with ABS plastic is easy to find, but tools are very expensive and meant for large-scale production.
