The Last Eras of Music

The music industry has undergone significant changes over the past 30 years, as new technologies and trends have shaped the way we consume and distribute music. Entertainment and art, particularly music, tend to adopt new technologies before other industries. In the CD and vinyl era, it was a challenge for artists to distribute their music and make it heard. This era was characterized by the control of distribution and promotion by record labels, who held the technology and resources to produce and distribute albums. The value of an album was based on the number of songs it contained and the quality of the packaging, as owning physical music was a unique experience.

The advent of MP3s and the rise of piracy in the early 2000s marked the end of the CD era. Illegal companies like Napster nearly destroyed the industry, and record labels were left searching for new revenue streams. This led to the emergence of ringtones as a key asset.

The streaming era, which began in the late 2000s, brought about major changes to the music industry. Fans were given the power to listen to whatever they wanted, whenever they wanted, through subscription-based streaming services. However, this has also meant that distribution is still dictated by popular demand.

New fandoms and trends, such as speed versions, dances, sounds, and challenges are changing the way new generations listen to music. In particular, K-pop has created its own ecosystem and communities, with fans playing a significant role in shaping the industry.

The business model has also undergone changes, with streaming platforms using complex algorithms to pay royalties. Artists are now paid based on the number of streams they receive, and the revenue is often delayed by several quarters. This has led to a shift in the way record labels evaluate and sign artists, with the number of followers an artist has before signing a contract becoming increasingly important.

In the past decade, technology has also made it easier for artists to express themselves and connect with fans without intermediates, and artists like Taylor Swift have become the voice of the unhappy fighting against this business model.

However, the increasing supply of music available on digital service providers (DSPs) has led to a dilution of revenue, making it difficult for the industry to make money without charging more to fans, but this has been historically a problem because music is invisible, people need to listen to it before buying and “Digital Media Users” are always expecting to get more for what they pay.

Touring has also become more complex, with the COVID-19 pandemic live-streaming concerts appeared then leading to a boom in demand for IRL concerts but also inflation is making it more expensive to produce them, and this has led to speculation that virtual concerts, or "metaverse concerts" will become a popular solution for fans to experience live music.

“Something must change for the industry to sustain itself in the future.”

The New Era

Blockchain technology has opened up a world of possibilities for the music industry, but it can be overwhelming to navigate. However, many individuals are dedicating themselves to understanding and utilizing the potential of web3.

One of the key aspects of blockchain in music is the use of NFTs as a revenue stream. While NFTs are often associated with digital assets such as concert access and unique vinyls, there is so much more that this technology can offer, such as prepaid models and fair revenue distribution for artists and stakeholders.

In the future, music distribution will continue to evolve in line with where the fans are. Platforms like TikTok and virtual worlds like the metaverse offer new opportunities for live experiences and a renewed appreciation for quality music.

The key to success in the music industry will be finding a way to seamlessly integrate all of these elements for the end user. Blockchain can facilitate this by offering a way to stream music and control costs, transparently and immediately.

As technology continues to shape the way we interact and consume, it is clear that music will continue to be a fundamental part of our culture. The web3 era is an exciting time for the music industry, and we can't wait to see what the future holds.

"Are you a true music FAN or just someone who puts music in the background? With the age of cheap streaming services coming to an end, it's time to re-evaluate how we listen to music. Don't miss out on the next 20 years of music consumption. Upgrade to LGND and experience music like never before”.

In conclusion, I am excited to see the future of music distribution and consumption, and I believe that web3 technologies like LGND and NFTs will play a crucial role in shaping the industry. BONES UP!
