This is a powerful way to promote your Mundo Lingo and your city as a whole; people love video!

Here we’ll tell you how to make an amazing video primed for virality!

👆 First, the basics

🌇 Showcase the Venue / City

Including a montage that transitions from day to night, featuring iconic landmarks or everyday street scenes helps to establish the time and place in the mind of the viewer. Once inside the venue, focus on capturing its atmosphere and character. During interviews, position participants against a backdrop that highlights distinctive aspects of the bar, giving viewers a feel for the event's ambiance.

📝 Native Languages + Subtitles

It’s a great idea (although not obligatory) to encourage participants to speak in their native language, and later add English subtitles for clarity. Keep a notepad handy to note their responses, avoiding the complexity of post-interview translations.

🎩 Keep it classy

Avoid scenes of partying, night club vibes, drunken behaviour, pouring alcohol, drinking shots and bare belly / chest areas. We also take care not to put selective emhasis on participants based on their perceived physical beauty in a way that could misrepresent the nature of our events.

🔎 Focus on Details

Make it pretty! Ensure all participants are wearing intact and high-quality flags – a torn or damaged flag can detract from the scene. Be mindful of your surroundings; avoid shots of people smoking or cluttered areas like tables filled with empty bottles.

👉👈 Jittery Interviewees

Aim for clarity and brevity in interviews. If an interviewee frequently pauses, stutters, or 'erm’s', consider re-recording to avoid having to heavily edit the clip. Encourage nervous interviewees to practice their answers before filming for confident and concise delivery. Keep sound bites quick and to the point (2 to 10 seconds), cut any long, meandering responses from final edit.

🙌 Dynamic Scripting

Variety is key. Asking the same questions will result in boriing answers. Instead, craft a range of questions that lead people into diverse answers, building a compelling narrative. Did you know people are more optimistic about the stock market on sunny days? Our mood every day is greatly effected by light, far more than we realise. Many big businesses understand this and use lighting to influence their customer’s mood. Generally, if you want people to move quickly and not hang about then cold, high Kelvin lighting is used. Ever notice that McDonalds have bright lighting around the service area? Yup, give us your money, eat your food and get out!

Order, eat and get out (So we can serve more people)

For this same reason fancy restaurants will put on warm lighting to help customers feel relaxed (even when the bill arrives), and cabin crew on long-haul flights will switch from blue to orange cabin lighting when they want you to fall asleep so they can eat.

Bad lighting in a venue will break your event. When venues use a certain type of lighting in the wrong way it results in an ugly appearance and uncomfortable atmosphere. For example, using bright spotlights is great for illuminating art, or fixing a laptop, but hanging them from a ceiling in an otherwise dark bar can cause unflattering facial shadows. Used correctly all-round warm ambient lighting can have a very positive effect on how long you want to stay somewhere.

🌅 Good Vibrations

Reverberations are echoes that bounce around and interfere with the voices we want to listen to. The key to Mundo Lingo’s success is understanding what makes people tick better than they even know themselves. Using this understanding, we make spaces in which people are subtly encouraged to bump into each other, make eye contact and say ‘hi’. They don’t need to know ‘why’ they have a great time and meet lots of people, they just should.. To bump into each other, they need to stand. To feel okay with eye contact and saying ‘hi’, we give them flags. The rest, is up to them.

The Ballroom Effect

When standing, social groups form easily and break apart again into new social groups. The chances of meeting people you vibe with is greatly increased by your mobility and not being stuck at a table facing the same 3 people all night. You can work your way towards someone of interest and if someone want’s to work their way towards you, it’s possible because of the constant disolving and formation of new groups.

Did you know people even ‘think’ better while standing?

The argument for sitting

Why not let them sit? They’re tired! This is like asking why not put 3 wheels on a bike. It’s easier to learn to ride a 3-wheel bike, why bother learning on 2 wheels? As most of us know, difficult things are sometimes worth it.

Forgotten Etiquette Did you know it’s rude to talk to someone who is standing while you sit down? Standing signals respect to those you talk to, especially during salutations. A standing/sitting conversation is awkward, let’s help our participants avoid that experience.

Strategies

👎 Brute Force

Of course, we don’t yell at people to stand up, especially once they’re sitting. However if there is a theft, word spreads fast throwing your events into doubt. Some tips:

Alert venue management. In turn they will help you alert security and their bar staff.

If it's a small item like a wallet, head to the bathrooms. Often thieves loot bags or jackets in the bathroom leaving them behind as they leave through the front door.

Telling other participants will only cause panic and encourage people to leave. Thieves often will only strike once in a night anyway.

Call the police, it must be reported.

If you know or find out who the thief is inform bar security and the police without attempting to intercept them yourself.

Be sympathetic with the victim and help them resolve everything especially if they need a translator.

The responsibility ultimately falls with the bar to resolve this issue. It's you're event, but before all else it's their venue, security and jurisdiction.

Try to keep the incident from causing alarm online: don’t post about it on social media.

Rude Bar Staff

Bar staff are usually rude because they’re unhappy in their job, or they feel that Mundo Lingo is a nuisance to an otherwise quiet night of the week. They don’t get paid more for doing Mundo Lingo’s extra work, a bit annoying for them.

→ Donate 5% of your earnings at the end of the night to the tip jar. You may feel you can't afford it but you'll more than make it back when they start taking extra care to ensure all drinks go on the ML account. Thank them personally for their hard work ensuring you have their moral support.

→ Greet the staff, managers and security at the beginning of each event. Remember their names and show a genuine interest in them. They can make your life easier.

→ Stone cold faced security staff? Be bold, ask for a quick meet with the head security in the presence of the venue manager. Explain that you appreciate their work because the security of participants is important to you. However we want participants to feel comfortable to communicate with security staff should something happen, therefore it will help if they're greeted with a smile to encourage a stronger rapport between participants and security staff.

Rude Participants

See the EOM guide Zen – Maintaining Buena Onda

Flirty Participants / “Vultures”

See the EOM guide Zen – Maintaining Buena Onda

Liaising with Venues

✅ Basics

Request a meeting in the early afternoon when it’s quiet + not on an event day.

Plan the day before, write a list of 4 to 6 subjects. 2 to 8 mins each.

Thank other attendees for their time before and after the meeting.

Ask personal questions to break the ice before getting into serious stuff, but for no longer than 10 minutes. We need participants to feel welcomed, attended to and comfortable in their surrounding environment but to do so we must also clearly mark boundaries. The following will help you keep a smile on their face.

🏆 We’re ready!

Something that sets us apart from our competition is that we are organised and run our community with professionalism. Mundo Lingo is always fully staffed and an Events Manager is always present. Managers are never late and never cancel. We always have your flag, and you’ll never wait more than 4 minutes to receive it.

Atmosphere

Ensure a smooth and non-disruptive ambience for participants

A focal point with standing room of 15m2

Sitting space for no more than 10% of your expected turn out

No Live bands or DJ’s, music at a conversational volume

No parallel events such as birthday parties or sports events

TV’s switched off.

🗣 Politics

It’s tempting to promote our opinions and challenge others from other belief systems. This is fine done in a calm and respectful manner however you will meet people on extreme ends of the woke/free speech divide, others that work as soldiers in invaded countries, people supportive of controversial political parties, religions and activists of all kinds. While representing Mundo Lingo you must be respectful to all people even if their beliefs seem unreasoble, bigoted or even harmful. Our events absolutely must be open to everybody and nobody should feel unwelcome, even if you don’t like them. If the conversation gets heated a professional team member will let it go, bite their tongue and walk away.

🧍‍♀️ An Out-Standing Team

Lead by example. Managers, Photographers and Ambassadors stand the whole night and especially when greeting participants. If you or one of your team has weak legs, find an quiet space to sitdown away from the crowd until you recover. Show the public that the Mundo Lingo team are always out-standing!

Hybrid Events

Mundo Lingo has a distinct format and ambience. We know what we do, and we’re the only one that does this one. This is Mundo Lingo’s “Product”. We don’t offer football matches the same way McDonalds don’t provide photocopy services. Yes some people may like to photocopy something while waiting for a burger, but it’s not the target audience. We have our thing, we’re good at it and we stick to it. Sports, tournaments, karaoke, bands, cooking classes, theatre, speeches, dance offs or anything else that’s not described within the EOM will not be found at Mundo Lingo. Special emphasis on sports, keep those screens off! We’re unique in being the one place you can actually escape from football, baseball, hockey or whichever sport it is you’re tired of hearing about. Those who want sports can go to a sports bar. We have a purpose.

If it’s an important world event and the bar insists, exceptions can be made with prior confirmation from a Community Manager.

🙄 Flag Games

“I don’t want any flags”

Everybody receives flags unless they strongly refuse. If they refuse, it begs the questions “Why are you here and won’t you offer your languages to others?”.

National Flag

Everyone receives the national flag unless they speak the national language but from a foreign country, such as Australians visiting in London. This has the extra advatage of keeping a tally.

Flags on chests, not arms.

Flags go on the chest in a vertical line. If participant puts them on their arm or anywhere else, pause them and offer our official recommendation that they should go on the chest where other participants (and bar management / our photographers) can see them. By putting the flags in the right place they’re supporting their event.

“I’m American but my mom’s Irish”

The flags indicate languages+dialects, not bloodline, heritage, or politics etc. Native language(s) in their correct dialect go at the top, nothing else.

Self-Determination

We recognise the self-determination of societies. If a participant from Catalunya wants a Catalan flag for both Catalan and Spanish languages (and not wear the flag of Spain) then they can have a Catalan flag only. We don’t insist on the Spanish flag under an assumption that only the Spanish flag can represent the Spanish language. Same for Taiwan, Quebec, Scotland etc. For more, check full Flag Acception Rules.

I speak Ecuadorian, Peruvian, Colombian, Venezuelan…

One flag from each language only, even if they say they speak “US English, Canadian, South African, English, Scottish and Australian etc”.

Is she Swedish? Okay, give me a Swedish flag..

Ocassionally someone asks for a flag for a language they don’t speak because it’s funny or want to target a specific person from that country. While maybe it's in good jest it can be frustrating to other participants. To filter this ask them to recite an easy sentence (not just “Hello”) in that language like “The quick brown fox jumps over the lazy dog”.

🤬 Rude Participants

Once in a while a participant may be rude towards you or others. We don't tolerate rudeness in the slightest. These people should be dealt with in a calm, polite and firm manner without interrupting them or raising your voice.

Violence

If the rudeness takes the form of aggression towards you or a participant don’t intervene, instead communicate the issue directly to both the bar manager and their security if present.

“Just give me the flags”

If a participant is too busy and impatient to listen to you for 30 seconds then they're in the wrong place. You can politely suggest this to them, we are afterall an event about exchanging conversation. You’re not obliged to give anyone the flags if they haven’t given you the time to tell them how the event works and certainly not if they don’t treat you in a dignified manner.

Flag Snatchers

Yup, it happens all the time. It’s preferable for various reasons that you and your assistants hand the flags to each participant. Most people don’t realise they’re not supposed to grab the flags themselves so it’s best to respond in a light hearted fashion. → Try with a beaming smile on your face “Whooaah! Hold on a minute! Aren’t you keen!?”. This should result in light embarrassment, laughter, lots of smiles and everybody immediately understanding they should wait to be handed the flags.

😎 Vultures (Flirty Participants)

Mundo Lingo is blessed with many beautiful participants. To some opportunists the chance to get a hot date with one of said participants and knowing they come from a variety of distant exotic lands can prove irresistible. However the feeling usually isn’t mutual and these opportunists become a distinct pest, even a plague on events.

Over the years we racked our brains to develope the best solutions to deal with “Vultures”.. The lessons we learned are the following:

1: Clarify your atmosphere

People associate parties, discos, bar crawls and nightclubs with being 'on the pull'. If you're event simulates that environment you are inviting this behaviour. Club music + dark lighting attracts vultures.

2: “Wholesome” marketing

The photos you upload every week are the shop window of what you ‘sell’. If they show a ‘singles event’ with greased hair dudes in leather jackets and close ups of ladies chests, soon enough that’s what your event will look like too. It’s a self-fulfilling prophesy. Find your favourite language nerds and pop them right on the album cover.

3: Peer Pressure

If someone asks you “where are all the hotties at?” burst their bubble right away. It’s only a difficult conversation if you don’t smile – you can say anything with a smile on your face.Try this:
“…it’s not really like that here, actually regular participants are a bit sensitive to it, they’ll notice you and some of them will call you out so I wouldn’t go down that path, they really frown on it here…😁”
. As the sociable descendants of monkeys we’re terrified of being socially expelled. Remember, smile and be ‘on their side’, you’re not confronting them, you’re not personally against it; you’re just letting them know the event-culture so they don’t get burned.

4: Ambassadors and Vulture Hunters

So you’re doing the above 3 points, but there’s a persistent vulture that keeps coming back and nagging their victims for their insta deets. Most people think it’s “easy” - just hand out flags, right? That massively underestimates the role. Fortunately, managers gain an amazing social life, a clear mission, boosted self-esteem, and new skills that bring out their best… plus, you get paid, of course.

💸 Get Paid

Depending on the city, local economy, and how dedicated you are, a mature operation with over 300 weekly participants can earn you up to $2 to $3k per month. Managers receive payment from host venues for providing ‘promotional services.’ For context: a weekly event of 200 people usually earns about 70% of a local service industry wage. To become financially independent, a manager typically runs two weekly events.

💫 Make Magic

When events get big, the vibe amplifies, and magic happens. It’s incredibly satisfying to watch your work bare fruit, and to be interviewed by those curious as to how you did it.

Mundo Lingo Magic

Enjoy the videos and music you love, upload original content, and share it all with friends, family, and the world on YouTube.

https://www.youtube.com/

Now what?

Learn about Onboarding

Or Go Back

👈 Collaborators Guide
