1.What are the types of stablecoins?

Although all stablecoins have the same task: to minimize the risks associated with cryptocurrency volatility, they can be divided into four types.

-Fiat
Such coins are backed by fiat currencies, i.e. money whose value comes not from its own value or a guarantee of exchange for gold or another currency, but from a government order to use it as payment. The US dollar prevails.

Such cryptocurrencies are centralized, meaning they have a single governing body.

Vivid examples of fiat stablecoins are USDT, BUSD, USDC, which we will discuss below.

-Commodity In fact, the only difference between them and fiat cryptocurrencies is that they are backed not by currencies but by commodities. Most often, it is gold, but other precious metals (silver, platinum) or oil can also be used.

Commodity stablecoins are also centralized.

Examples include the golden cryptocurrencies DGX, PAXG, and XAUT.

-Cryptocurrencies
As the name implies, they are backed by other cryptocurrencies. The idea is to get a decentralized coin with a more stable price than a regular cryptocurrency.

An example of this type is DAI, which is built on the Ethereum blockchain. We will also talk about this coin below.

-Algorithmic This is a decentralized cryptocurrency that is not backed by anything. The stability of its price is achieved by algorithms that control the total amount of stablecoins similar to the money issue by the central bank of a country.

Algorithmic stablecoins include USDN and FEI.

What's the difference?

In fact, there is none. The main goal of stablecoins is to provide a stable value. There are four solutions for this.

The only difference is in the centralization and decentralization of such stablecoins. Centralization, i.e. subordination to a single authority that controls the crypto, completely kills the idea of cryptocurrency. After all, it was created as a counterweight to existing centralized financial systems.

2.Advantages and disadvantages of stablecoins

Since the most popular stablecoins are fiat coins pegged to the dollar, their main advantage is that they combine the "freedom" of using cryptocurrencies with the reliability of the US dollar.

Simply put, 1 stablecoin backed by the US currency will cost $1. Neither Elon Musk's tweet nor the market rush will affect its value. Another issue that is extremely relevant for Ukrainians is how much the dollar will cost.

In order to sell stablecoins, each exchange must have a base of resources to which coins are pegged. That is, when the reserve is replenished, a certain number of stablecoins are issued, and when assets are sold, the number of coins is redeemed.

This is the main disadvantage of stable cryptocurrencies - you need to be sure that your platform is fully backed up. Exchanges usually publish audit results and reserve reports.

For example, Tether, the issuer of the USDT stablecoin, recently had to prove once again that its coin is backed by a 1:1 ratio to the dollar. On August 9, the company published a report by Moore Cayman, according to which Tether has assets worth $62 billion. This includes cash and liquid instruments that can be easily converted into funds to back the cryptocurrency.

3.Examples of stablecoins and their history

Tether (USDT)

Tether is a cryptocurrency token that was developed and released by Tether Limited. It first appeared in 2015 and was soon integrated into the Bitfinex cryptocurrency exchange. An investigation by journalists proved that the company that issued it, Tether Limited, and the administration of the Bitfinex exchange were linked.

In 2015, Tether was integrated by the American crypto exchange Poloniex.

The history of Tether is quite interesting. In 2012, programmer J. R. Willet found a way to create new assets based on Bitcoin. His technology was tested for a year. In July 2013, the Mastercoin cryptocurrency was released.

Later, the promoters of this protocol created an organization of the same name. Later, it was renamed the Omni Foundation.

In 2014, the leaders of this project, Brock Pierce and Craig Sellar, joined forces with entrepreneur Reeve Collins. Together, they launched the Realcoin startup. The same year, a cryptocurrency with the same name was released. It was developed on the basis of the Bitcoin blockchain using the Omni Layer protocol.

At the end of 2014, Realcoin was rebranded. As a result, the cryptocurrency received a new name - Tether.

Initially, the authors of Tether claimed that each unit of this asset was backed by one US dollar. However, after the lawsuits in 2018, the management's position changed. Now, "USDT collateral" means not only cash dollars but also loans from credit organizations.

Nevertheless, for several years now, Tether has remained one of the most popular stablecoins, and in Ukraine, the most popular.

According to coinmarketcap.com, Tether ranks 3rd in terms of capitalization, behind only Bitcoin (BTC) and Ethereum (ETH).

As of September 5, 2022, Tether's market capitalization is $67.5 billion. There are currently 67,550,404,104 USDT in circulation.

Binance USD (BUSD)

Binance USD (BUSD) is a stablecoin backed by the US dollar at a 1:1 ratio, issued by the Binance cryptocurrency exchange in partnership with Paxos Trust Company. It is authorized and regulated by the New York State Department of Financial Services (NYDFS).

Binance USD was launched on September 5, 2019 with the goal of combining the stability of the dollar with blockchain technology. It is a digital fiat currency that is issued as an ERC-20 token and supports the BEP-2 protocol.

Almost all cryptocurrencies on the Binance exchange are traded not only against Tether (USDT) but also Binance USD (BUSD). In addition, there is a BUSD/USDT currency pair.

Despite the fact that both stablecoins seem to be pegged to the dollar, their market value is constantly fluctuating, including against each other.

According to coinmarketcap.com, as of September 5, Binance USD ranks 6th in terms of capitalization.

The market capitalization of BUSD is $19.4 billion. There are currently 19,433,224,173 BUSD in circulation.

USD Coin (USDC)

USD Coin (USDC) is a joint project of Circle Internet Financial and the cryptocurrency exchange Coinbase. It was developed by their joint organization Centre Consortium.

USDC is a stablecoin created on the Ethereum blockchain according to the ERC-20 standard. In fact, the coin is a tokenized US dollar, as it is fully pegged to its value.

USD Coin offers open source code, a transparent ecosystem, and a full peg to the US dollar. And the main difference is that all token issuance operations comply with banking standards, US laws, and regulatory rules.

At the same time, the Center has all the necessary licenses to conduct banking operations and adheres to the anti-money laundering policy. To do this, the company's clients must undergo a KYC verification procedure.

Another important advantage of the USD Coin cryptocurrency over other stablecoins is its partnership with such major companies as ASIC miner Bitmain, investment bank Goldman Sachs Group, search engine Baidu, and venture capital market leader IDG Capital.

Dai (DAI)

Dai (DAI) is a stablecoin backed by various digital assets, whose exchange rate is pegged to the US dollar. The developers claim that the coin is fully decentralized. DAI is supported by Ethereum and other popular blockchains.

MakerDAO, a decentralized autonomous organization created in 2014 and built on the Ethereum blockchain, is responsible for the issuance and management of DAI. The project is controlled by holders of MKR management tokens.

DAI operates on the basis of Maker Protocol smart contracts, which is also based on Ethereum. With its help, project users can create cryptocurrencies. MakerDAO manages the Maker Protocol through MKR.

In 2020, MakerDAO became the first DeFi protocol with a total value of blocked funds of $1 billion.

Під зеленою галочкою зліва жмемо на іконку, змінюємо у графі Envirment на опцію як на скріні нижче Injected Provider - Metamask , і після цього жмемо деплой, тоді у вас повино загорітись зелена галочка знизу, з хешом транзакції.
