For the last decade, a checkmark on social media served as an important trust indicator - allowing users to quickly identify verified accounts and avoid impersonation. Granted, the checkmarks were assigned by platforms through opaque internal vetting processes, but there was at least a perceived measure of integrity behind the designation.  

With Twitter now charging $8/mo for checkmarks on personal accounts ($1000/mo for orgs) and Meta charging $12/mo with the submission of a government ID - not to mention, Discord, TikTok, & many others with versions of their own - the waters of verification have been muddied. It's the checkmark/social media equivalent of having to pay monthly fees on 8 different streaming apps.

Since each platform employs its own set of rules for assigning checkmark icons, they are completely siloed, relatively arbitrary, and far less reliable indicators of trust. Put simply, the signs (✓) are no longer signifying.

What we're doing.

While building NF.TD, we’ve been asking ourselves a lot of questions centered around the idea of “what it means to be verified online” - specifically in the context of crypto wallets and blockchain, but also in the backdrop of rapid AI development, deep fakes, and impersonators/bots.

It’s one thing to prove that you’re human, it's another to prove which human.

And so - what is a reasonable next step in terms of technology that exists, can be widely available/distributed, but is also in line with common practice and how people are already interacting online?

There’s one feature of the internet that’s ubiquitous and interoperable: a link.

But it can't just be any link, it has to be a link that contains provable evidence that this person really is who they say they are.

With an NF.TD link, you can be your own checkmark. Through a combination of:

• public proofs (public attestations, DNS records, and connected wallets) 

• cryptographically signed messages (secured by ECDSA, the same algorithm Ethereum uses)

You can easily anchor yourself online in a verified way, shareable across any platform or app you use. Any time you see an NF.TD link in bio - containing proven socials - you can confirm who you're interacting with.

While the above features are already live and in public beta, we are working to design an audit trail that will show when proofs were added/removed/revoked across NF.TD profiles. Through signed messages containing public proofs - anyone will be able to independently verify the proofs are valid, and it was you who added this proof to your profile - at a specific point in time.

In this brave new world, where A.I will be virtually indistinguishable from humans, NF.TD is starting with proofs for social accounts and websites and building for the inevitable future in which you will need to prove a lot more - where every piece of content created will need a valid signature.

Lack of trust is one of the biggest issues in crypto today. Identity is fragmented and confusing, and folks are often skeptical of others. Even with a vouch from Dan, Vitalik was still asked to prove his identity when he first joined Farcaster.

With NF.TD, you can now prove that you do, in fact, own the socials you’re linking to. Verifications for Farcaster, Twitter, Paragraph, Gallery, Sound, ENS & personal websites are live (with plans to integrate more as we build).

We’re verifying through a mix of connected wallets, public attestations, & DNS records.

We re-worked the “add link” flow a bit.

When adding a new link, NF.TD will automatically detect if your connected wallet matches a profile on an integrated app like Farcaster, Paragraph, Gallery, & Sound. 

Otherwise, you can always link to anything you want via the “custom” button (no verification). 

Verifications are opt-in and will receive a verified checkmark if successful.

Every NF.TD profile will also have an API endpoint that developers can use to power profiles and verified identity within other apps.

The internet can be a confusing place.

We often thought back to this interaction with Kenneth Chong, and loved how people were using NF.TD to contextualize and learn about others.

With verifications, we wanted to keep the existing functionality, but also wanted to introduce something very important - a layer of trust.

Our very first minter is 0xen, a fully pseudonymous artist. It can be even more difficult, and important, for pseudonymous personas to build trust and reputation online, and we're proud to be able to support.

We’re opening up profile endpoints for developers so you can soon bring your verified identity into the other apps you use - helping folks easily contextualize who you are, wherever you are (and helping you easily vet the people you’re interacting with as well).

How much do OG usernames cost to mint?

How can I get an OG username?
The username you mint just has to be one of the first 2,500 usernames minted. They’re automatically granted OG status.

Can OG usernames be bought or sold?
OG usernames can be bought or sold on secondary markets, just like any other NF.TD username. If an OG username is sold, the OG status stays with that username.

Can I transfer OG status to another username?
OG status cannot be transferred to a non-OG username.

What about usernames minted after the first 2,500?
Every NF.TD username functions the same. But, any usernames minted after the first 2,500 are not OG usernames and do not get access to OG perks & benefits.

Interpretation

The words of which the initial letter is capitalized have meanings defined under the following conditions. The following definitions shall have the same meaning regardless of whether they appear in singular or in plural.

Definitions

For the purposes of these Terms and Conditions:

We reserve the right to remove access to usernames at any time without notification beforehand.

Our Service allows You to post Content. You are responsible for the Content that You post to the Service, including its legality, reliability, and appropriateness.

The Company reserves the right, but not the obligation, to, in its sole discretion, determine whether or not any Content is appropriate and complies with this Terms, refuse or remove this Content. The Company further reserves the right to make formatting and edits and change the manner any Content. The Company can also limit or revoke the use of the Service if You post such objectionable Content. Corrupt or invalid backup points may be caused by, without limitation, Content that is corrupted prior to being backed up or that changes during the time a backup is performed.

The Company will provide support and attempt to troubleshoot any known or discovered issues that may affect the backups of Content. But You acknowledge that the Company has no liability related to the integrity of Content or the failure to successfully restore Content to a usable state.

You agree to maintain a complete and accurate copy of any Content in a location independent of the Service.

To the maximum extent permitted by applicable law, in no event shall the Company or its suppliers be liable for any special, incidental, indirect, or consequential damages whatsoever (including, but not limited to, damages for loss of profits, loss of data or other information, for business interruption, for personal injury, loss of privacy arising out of or in any way related to the use of or inability to use the Service, third-party software and/or third-party hardware used with the Service, or otherwise in connection with any provision of this Terms), even if the Company or any supplier has been advised of the possibility of such damages and even if the remedy fails of its essential purpose.

If You are a European Union consumer, you will benefit from any mandatory provisions of the law of the country in which you are resident in.

United States Legal Compliance

You represent and warrant that (i) You are not located in a country that is subject to the United States government embargo, or that has been designated by the United States government as a "terrorist supporting" country, and (ii) You are not listed on any United States government list of prohibited or restricted parties.

Severability and Waiver

Severability

If any provision of these Terms is held to be unenforceable or invalid, such provision will be changed and interpreted to accomplish the objectives of such provision to the greatest extent possible under applicable law and the remaining provisions will continue in full force and effect.

Waiver

Except as provided herein, the failure to exercise a right or to require performance of an obligation under this Terms shall not effect a party's ability to exercise such right or require such performance at any time thereafter nor shall be the waiver of a breach constitute a waiver of any subsequent breach.

Log Files

NF.TD follows a standard procedure of using log files. These files log visitors when they visit websites. All hosting companies do this and a part of hosting services' analytics. The information collected by log files include internet protocol (IP) addresses, browser type, Internet Service Provider (ISP), date and time stamp, referring/exit pages, and possibly the number of clicks. These are not linked to any information that is personally identifiable. The purpose of the information is for analyzing trends, administering the site, tracking users' movement on the website, and gathering demographic information.

Like any other website, NF.TD uses 'cookies'. These cookies are used to store information including visitors' preferences, and the pages on the website that the visitor accessed or visited. The information is used to optimize the users' experience by customizing our web page content based on visitors' browser type and/or other information.

How does it work?

• 1) Search for your username, and mint it as an NFT.

• 2) Customize your profile and prove ownership of socials like Farcaster, Twitter, Paragraph, Gallery, & Sound (more to come) - and your domains/websites. Otherwise, you can always link to anything you want via the “custom” button (no proof/verification).

• 3) Be your own checkmark and display your NF.TD url with your proven identity anywhere you interact with people.

What happens when I mint an NF.TD username?
Once you mint your username, an NFT (ERC-721) gets custom generated with your username. The design is stored on-chain. You can then customize your NF.TD profile for that username.

How is NF.TD different from other link in bios?
We allow you to easily prove your identity so others can know it's truly you they're interacting with online. This is especially important to combat bots, impersonations, and ever-advancing A.I.

How exactly do the proofs work?
We accomplish this through a combination of:

• public proofs (public attestations, DNS records, and connected wallets)

• cryptographically signed messages (secured by ECDSA, the same algorithm Ethereum uses)

How can I be sure that the proofs are valid?
Verified checkmarks only get added to links on NF.TD if we detect that a proof is, in fact, valid.

Every profile will have an audit trail (coming soon) so anyone can independently confirm the proofs are valid, and that they were signed by the owner of the wallet/NFTD username.

What does an NF.TD URL look like?

Can I mint more than one username?
You can mint 5 NF.TD usernames per wallet.

How much does it cost to mint a username?
The mint price is 0.05 ETH for the first 2,500 (OG) usernames.

What kind of usernames can I mint?
You can mint any username that is at least 3 alphanumeric characters long and at most 26 alphanumeric characters long.

Can I sell or buy an NF.TD username on a secondary market?
You can sell or buy an NF.TD username on secondary marketplaces, just like other NFTs.

What happens to my NF.TD profile once I sell that username?
You no longer have access to customize the profile for that NF.TD username and the profile itself will be wiped when the new owner/wallet connects

The new owner of that username will now be able to customize the profile.

What are OG usernames?
OG usernames are the first 2,500 usernames minted on NF.TD. There will only ever be 2,500 OG usernames.

What benefits do OG usernames get?
Verified “OG” mark, early access to test features, upcoming discounts & perks, & more.

Can I sell or buy an OG username?
OG usernames can be bought or sold just like any other NF.TD username. The OG status stays with the OG username, even if it’s sold.

What happens after all the OG usernames are minted?
Any usernames minted after the first 2,500 are regular usernames, and they function just like OG usernames (but without the OG perks & benefits).

Is there an API?
NF.TD will have an API for developers (currently in closed beta) that will power trust & identity across other crypto apps and wallets.
