Since then, blockchain has been applied in various domains, including finance, healthcare, supply chain management, and more. However, with the growing adoption of blockchain technology, the need for more efficient and scalable blockchain systems is on the rise. One approach to tackle scalability issues in blockchain is through sharding. Sharding is a technique that divides the blockchain network into smaller, manageable parts called shards. In this article, we&apos;ll discuss dynamic state sharding by Shardeum, and the difference between dynamic and static state sharding.</p><p><strong>What is State Sharding?</strong></p><p>State sharding is a technique used to improve the scalability of blockchain networks by breaking down the network into smaller, more manageable parts called shards. Each shard can process transactions independently, which improves the overall throughput of the network. In a sharded blockchain network, each node is responsible for maintaining a subset of the blockchain&apos;s state, rather than the entire state. This division of labor enables the blockchain network to process transactions in parallel, resulting in faster and more efficient transaction processing.</p><h2 id="h-static-state-sharding" class="text-3xl font-header !mt-8 !mb-4 first:!mt-0 first:!mb-0">Static State Sharding</h2><p>Static state sharding is a method where the blockchain network is divided into a fixed number of shards at the start of the network&apos;s operation. Each shard is assigned a subset of the total state of the blockchain network, and all transactions relevant to that shard are processed by that shard only. The division of the network into shards is done statically, which means it remains fixed throughout the life of the blockchain network.</p><p>Static state sharding has several advantages, including increased transaction processing speed and improved scalability. However, it also has some limitations. One major disadvantage of static state sharding is that it requires significant planning and coordination upfront to determine the optimal number of shards and their size. Moreover, if the number of shards is too small, the network will be prone to congestion, and if the number of shards is too large, the network&apos;s efficiency may be reduced.</p><h2 id="h-dynamic-state-sharding" class="text-3xl font-header !mt-8 !mb-4 first:!mt-0 first:!mb-0">Dynamic State Sharding</h2><p>Dynamic state sharding is a more flexible approach to sharding, where the network dynamically adjusts the number of shards based on the current network traffic and the number of nodes in the network. This means that new shards can be added to the network as the demand for transaction processing increases, and existing shards can be merged as the demand for transaction processing decreases.</p><p>Dynamic state sharding has several advantages over static state sharding. One major advantage is that it eliminates the need for upfront planning and coordination to determine the optimal number of shards. Additionally, it enables the network to be more responsive to changes in network traffic and node participation, resulting in improved efficiency and scalability.</p><p>Shardeum is one of the blockchain networks that have implemented dynamic state sharding. Shardeum&apos;s sharding mechanism is designed to enable efficient and scalable transaction processing, even under high network traffic.
