Hi, Spirits!

Thanks for being so early with us. 👀 We wanted to share a bit of background on the name of our project and why it was chosen;

No Ugly Chicks is a name we ultimately decided on for a number of reasons. It is a term commonly used by misogynistic individuals with the purpose of degrading women who they deem to not be of visual standard - in other words women they see as unattractive.

While it is colloquial in nature, the attitude behind the phrase “no ugly chicks” is one that dates back centuries, men only finding value in women who are visually appealing and adhere to the beauty standards of any particular given time. While finding physical attraction important is completely okay and valid; basing the value of an individual - in this phrases’ case women - solely on their physical attractiveness is outdated and something we as a project aim to change.

Be honest with yourself for a second- when you first heard of our project name, what went through your mind? Was it disgust? Curiosity? Confusion? By naming our project after a misogynistic phrase that is still commonly used today, we wanted to shock you as an audience, outrage you, and make you think about why anyone with a moral compass would use such an awful term as the name of their project?

We want to reclaim the phrase “no ugly chicks” and use our project to promote body positivity and self-love through artistic expression. Women in today’s society are still held to unattainable beauty standards, both through outdated ideals and the pushing of such standards by Web 2 brands. Social media makes it even easier nowadays for brands to push their products through promoting lifestyles and beauty standards that are either completely false, or only attainable to those with massive incomes. Photoshop, online influencers, and rapidly evolving technology has only added fuel to the pre-existing fire of ridiculous beauty standards, and we as a team worry that this will continue to worsen over the coming decades.

Our art is inclusive of all shapes, sizes, skin tones and features traits that society has deemed to be “ugly” in nature, natural occurrences such as acne, cellulite and stretch marks that girls from a young age are encouraged to cover up for the sake of “beauty”. We hope that our artwork will encourage others to see the beauty in being imperfect, and makes you proud of whatever imperfections you may have.

We have noticed that many women’s empowerment brands do not tackle the issues arising in current society, or use the idea of women empowerment as a chance to push products or ideals that are detrimental to promoting what they claim to stand for. We want to provide Web 3 with a project that accomplishes the things these brands do not - through partnering with other like-minded projects, giving holders and non-holders information and advice regarding common insecurities and lessons on self-love, and creating ways in which one can partake in self-care.

To quote Estee Lauder: 'In a perfect world, we'd all be judged on the sweetness of our souls. But in our less than perfect world, the woman who looks pretty has a distinct advantage and, usually, the last word’. We at No Ugly Chicks want to promote this ideal world, and help shape reality into a place in which attractiveness and value is not deemed by physical perfection.

** **

We look forward to sharing our wonderful world with you.

The No Ugly Chicks Team x
