Introduction

We are thrilled to announce that USDC on Noble and the imminent launch of CCTP is poised to unlock huge UX and liquidity benefits for the Cosmos ecosystem.

The Cosmos stack, from the Cosmos SDK to CometBFT (formerly Tendermint) and the Inter-Blockchain Communication (IBC) protocol, offer a plethora of ways for sovereign application-specific blockchains to enhance their performance and utility. However, a large barrier to success for these blockchains has always been a lack of access to native assets like stablecoins, and easy on-ramping of liquidity into the IBC ecosystem.

Today, we are excited to announce that the final component of the Cosmos USDC migration path - Circle’s implementation of the Cross-Chain Transfer Protocol (CCTP) - will launch on Noble's mainnet on November 28th after being available on Noble's testnet as of November 3rd.

CCTP will enable users to easily migrate USDC between blockchains in a single transaction. In fact, users on any CCTP-enabled blockchain (currently Arbitrum, Avalanche, Base, Ethereum, and OP Mainnet) will have a way to transfer their assets to Cosmos without relying on custodial bridges.

CCTP on Noble is a major engineering initiative which was first presented in a testnet demo at Cosmoverse in October. Now on the cusp of CCTP mainnet deployment, it reflects an enormous onboarding advantage for the Cosmos ecosystem, and specifically for the dYdX v4 Chain which has officially activated their trading platform. Let’s dig in!

What is Noble?

Noble is a Cosmos application-specific blockchain that is purpose-built for native asset issuance. Noble is the issuance chain for native USDC in the Cosmos and IBC ecosystem with over 16 million USDC currently on-chain. As an infrastructure provider, Noble plugs into over 50 IBC-connected blockchains and enables the seamless transfer of native USDC throughout the IBC ecosystem.

What is CCTP?

CCTP enables USDC to be sent securely between supported blockchains via a native burn and mint process. There is no reliance on custodial bridging. Here’s an example of a simple CCTP transfer flow:

1. User transfers USDC from one chain to another via a third-party app, thereby burning USDC on the source chain (e.g., Ethereum)

2. Circle’s automated service observes and attests to the burn event

3. Either the user or a third party relays the attestation to the destination chain (e.g., Noble)

4. User receives USDC on the destination chain (e.g., Noble)

Interacting with CCTP and dYdX Chain

As the first non-EVM implementation of CCTP, Noble has had the opportunity to build additional functionality on top of the core CCTP protocol, which vastly improves the user experience of onboarding to any IBC-connected blockchain from other ecosystems like Ethereum.

After the mainnet launch of CCTP on Noble, Noble plans to introduce router functionality that can automatically forward USDC minted by CCTP to IBC-connected blockchains. This means users will be able to sign one transaction on any CCTP-enabled chain (e.g., Ethereum) and seamlessly receive their funds on any IBC-connected chain without having to specify the behind-the-scenes routing.

The unique IBC transfer flow, once forwarding is available, is as follows:

1. User transfers USDC from one chain to another via a third-party app, thereby burning USDC on the source chain (e.g., Ethereum) and including a forwarding message (e.g., “forward to dYdX Chain as destination chain”)

2. Circle’s automated service observes and attests to the burn event

3. Either the user or a third party relays the message and attestation to Noble

4. Noble’s router module executes the forwarding message via IBC per the contained metadata

5. User receives minted funds on the destination chain

Noble’s router module is expected to launch later this year. In the meantime, users can use third-party messaging protocols to forward USDC from Noble via IBC after CCTP issuance on Noble.

You may be asking - what is native USDC? Why is it issued on the Noble blockchain? How is native different from other bridged forms of USDC currently held by users in the Cosmos ecosystem? Why is native USDC needed to accelerate Cosmos’ technical growth and adoption?

We have answers.

Native versus Bridged

Before Noble, users and appchains in Cosmos needed to rely on bridges to access USDC - that is, USDC issued on Ethereum was brought to Cosmos permissionlessly via bridge protocols, such as Axelar and Gravity. While expedient, bridging brought additional costs, complexity and barriers to USDC liquidity in Cosmos.

Enter Circle and Noble.

Noble is an appchain purpose-built for native asset issuance in Cosmos and the boundless Inter-Blockchain Communication (IBC) ecosystem.

Dozens of appchains will be able to directly access native USDC via Noble as the issuance hub in Cosmos. Users will be able to mint and redeem USDC from Circle directly on Noble in the same way as they do on Ethereum or other chains where USDC is natively issued.

Over time, we expect native USDC liquidity will proliferate via secure and stable IBC connections to dozens of sovereign Cosmos appchains, including dYdX, Osmosis and others. In addition, Noble will be the access point to the Cosmos ecosystem for institutional customers of Circle.

Overall, native USDC provides 2 key benefits for users:

USDC Natively Issued on Noble

There are currently over 100 different bridged forms of USDC within the Cosmos ecosystem (h/t to @NumiaData for the data). Why? It’s a combination of different bridge protocols and the complexities of IBC routing. Regardless, it has been an enormous UX challenge.

Through enhancements made to the user experience of the IBC protocol, users can seamlessly send Noble USDC between appchains without losing the fungibility of the native USDC asset.

For example, if a user sends USDC from Noble to Osmosis via IBC, then takes that asset to dYdX, the asset is no longer fungible with USDC sent directly from Noble. While IBC paths ensure a stable connection to the native asset on the origin (or issuance) chain, it can also create complexities for the user if the path becomes more than 1-hop away from the origin chain.

To solve this UX challenge, Noble leverages packet-forwarding technology to enable asset transfers between IBC-connected chains in “1-click”. When a user wants to send their asset from one chain to another, the asset is routed through Noble, thus ensuring a consistent 1-hop route for USDC among different IBC paths. Here are some scenarios:

1. User wants to send USDC from Noble to Osmosis:

Noble (source and origin/issuance chain) → Osmosis (destination chain)

2. User wants to send IBC-transferred USDC from Osmosis to dYdX:

Osmosis (source chain) → Noble (origin/issuance chain) → dYdX (destination chain)

3. User wants to send IBC-transferred USDC from dYdX to Osmosis:

dYdX (source chain) → Noble (origin/issuance chain) → Osmosis (destination chain)

The UX is the same for all transfers due to packet-forwarding technology - a 1-click experience!

As appchains and IBC connections proliferate, we expect there to be hundreds and eventually thousands of source and destination chains routing assets through Noble, providing the ecosystem with a simple, safe and seamless user experience.

Conclusion

We’re very excited about what native $USDC via Noble means for the Cosmos ecosystem!

Native USDC has been over a year in the making as a result of close collaboration between core Cosmos organizations including Noble, Strangelove Labs, Osmosis, and dYdX, among others. Multiple pieces came together to make this launch successful, including multi-stakeholder coordination, IBC protocol engineering, multiple audits, testing frameworks and more.

Appchains offer developers sovereignty over their architecture and give teams the freedom to build useful applications without focusing on obstacles to scalability, such as rising gas costs and network congestion. 

Celestia is a modular blockchain network built with the Cosmos SDK that supercharges the appchain model, empowering developers with the scale and ease of rollups, without compromising customizability and sovereignty. Via data availability sampling, Celestia’s throughput scales with demand as more users join the network and run light nodes, providing developers with an abundance of choice on what to build, and how to build it. 

In service of this vision, and as a result of Celestia’s close connection to the Cosmos ecosystem, we are excited to share our plans to service the Celestia ecosystem by bringing USDC and native asset issuance to rollup developers – thereby providing direct access to native stablecoins, and other crypto-assets, out-of-the-box.

Bootstrapping Stablecoin Liquidity for Sovereign Rollups 

To date, the default path for rollup developers involves settling on Ethereum, deploying native bridges and posting data to Ethereum’s highly censorship resistant, but expensive, blockspace. 

Developers surrender sovereignty and choice in exchange for access to the deepest on-chain liquidity, particularly of stablecoins. In fact, USDC continues to be the most bridged asset from Ethereum by a large margin, comprising 33% of all Ethereum bridge TVL, followed closely in volume by USDT. Bridging stablecoins from Ethereum Mainnet to a new rollup can entail significant, volatile gas costs for users, making mainstream consumer payments and many other types of smaller transactions unworkable.

Sovereign rollups on Celestia usher in a new paradigm. Celestia makes spinning up a new blockchain nearly as easy as deploying a smart contract. Unlike existing Cosmos appchains, developers can launch a blockchain without needing to issue their own token or bootstrap security on their own, bringing down the time to deploy a new, fully-provisioned blockchain from days to minutes.

However, many sovereign rollups still need direct access to stablecoins, requiring them to either accept the expensive tradeoffs of bridging assets directly from Ethereum or use various wrapped stablecoin options provided by third-party bridges, fragmenting liquidity across the Interchain.

With Noble, sovereign rollup developers gain direct access to native stablecoins, allowing the use of USDC and other stablecoins out-of-the-box for gas and on-chain transactions. In minutes, developers will be able to spin up a new application on a dedicated blockchain, mint USDC on Noble, connect their blockchain via IBC or Hyperlane, and initiate cheap and fast stablecoin transactions.

Unlocking a New Wave of Crypto-Native Applications

In addition to on-ramping new liquidity for appchains and rollups, Noble provides developers a “Stripe-like experience” for integrating USDC into crypto-native applications across a number of verticals:

Mint, Route, Swap: The Simplicity of Noble Assets

Overall, issuing a token like native USDC on Noble is a straightforward exercise. We've implemented a custom Token Factory module to mimic the functionality of a smart contract on Ethereum in which asset issuers and their institutional partners can mint and burn assets with ease. Noble’s goal is to provide maximum flexibility for issuers on Cosmos.

Subsequently, appchains and rollups can now receive direct and affordable access to deep, on-chain liquidity. Users no longer need to pay hefty gas fees to Ethereum just to integrate USDC. 

Noble also uses the recently introduced Packet Forward Middleware, which solves the path unwinding problem in the IBC ecosystem and facilitates a “one-click” experience for users transferring assets between blockchains. This positions Noble as not only an issuing chain, but also a router for tokens throughout the Interchain – ultimately improving the user experience for appchains, rollups and asset issuers alike.

DISTRIBUTION OF $FRNZ 

While we initially communicated a timeline for the distribution of FRNZ tokens, we’ve since had to update it in an effort to ensure the process is as seamless as possible! The updated FRNZ campaign is as follows: 

FRNZ tokens are now available on 3 major Cosmos DEXs. These include: Osmosis, Kujira and Crescent. We also intend to support WyndDAO in the coming weeks. These DEXs have been seeded with 25 FRNZ tokens each and paired with a minimal amount of ATOM. We have set up these pools to give the community a way to trade up to 1 FRNZ token in an “open market” environment.  

AIRDROP DETAILS

On April 3, 2023 at 5PM UTC, Noble airdropped 300 million microfrienzies, totalling 300 FRNZ tokens, to axlUSDC holders across 11 Cosmos chains (Axelar, Gravity, Comdex, Crescent, Canto, Juno, Kujira, Osmosis, Iris, Secret, Evmos) who hold at least 50axlUSDC in their wallet. The airdrop snapshot took place on March 27, 2023 at 5PM UTC.

This airdrop campaign has been managed by the Notional team and included compiling a database of eligible addresses and building out the airdrop mechanism. If you can find a complete list of eligible addresses in this json file.

If you are eligible for the airdrop, the Notional team has generated Noble addresses for all eligible participants. The only exception to this are axlUSDC holders on Canto and Evmos who will have their tokens sent directly to their Canto and Evmos wallet via an IBC token transfer. 

All participants who have been airdropped their FRNZ will be able to find their tokens in their Keplr, Cypher and Leap wallets! 

REDEMPTIONS & NOTE ON PRIVACY

As of today, FRNZ token holders will be able to start the redemption process to claim their Noble friendship bracelet, leveraging SWIFT Protocol built on the Juno blockchain. The redemption process will be managed at: www.noblefrnz.xyz 

Swift Protocol has developed a novel mechanism – SwiftGaurd – for ensuring customer data privacy thereby enabling the seamless transfer of sensitive information between parties. You can read more about their data encryption API here.

Throughout the duration of the Noble FRNZ campaign, Noble will reserve 100 FRNZ tokens to distribute as a reward for quality contributions throughout the Cosmos ecosystem.

TIMELINE

The IBC ecosystem has never had a native, fiat-backed stablecoin that is highly liquid and fully collateralized. That is about to change with Noble’s first issuance partner, Circle, a US-regulated fintech bringing USDC natively to Cosmos. For the first time in Cosmos history, 50+ IBC-enabled blockchains (and counting!) will soon be able to access USDC that has been natively issued on Noble - an integration leveraging IBC that is simple, safe and seamless.

This integration will catalyze hundreds of millions of dollars in liquidity over the coming months in Cosmos, and will seek to rectify the challenges that users and appchains face when interacting with bridged assets sourced from other ecosystems. In the future, we believe that hundreds of highly liquid, well-adopted Cosmos blockchains will exist. Every blockchain needs a canonical and fungible version of USDC, and Noble exists to fulfill this critical need.

Yet, native USDC issuance is just the beginning for Noble. In the future, we see Noble as the gateway for all digital assets coming into the IBC ecosystem. These assets can include stablecoins and any other on-chain digital representation of real-world value. Stay tuned for more updates in this regard! Noble’s History

We’ve been operating in stealth mode since last year, as a collaborative effort between Informal Systems, Strangelove Labs, and Iqlusion. After Terra’s collapse in May 2022, the need for a large, trusted stablecoin in the IBC ecosystem became clear. Combined with dYdX’s announcement that they were building their own IBC-enabled appchain, it became a downright urgent deliverable for the entire Cosmos community. Enter the team at Circle, which has mobilized a talented group of people and devoted substantial resources to seeing native USDC issuance in the IBC ecosystem.

In typical Cosmos fashion, a committed and passionate group of individuals across a number of independent organizations, namely Jelena, Zaki, Jack and the Strangelove engineering team, came together to start making Noble a reality. Throughout Noble’s entire lifecycle, Strangelove has acted as the key engineering partner for the Noble project: developing the platform, specifying asset integrations, and continuously testing the software to ensure stability and reliability.

As an independent entity, Noble will continue to maintain a working relationship with the Strangelove team on ongoing development, maintenance, and testing. Noble’s Vision

So, what is Noble? Our goals are simple:

Simple, Effective, Best-in-Class UX

Cosmos and the IBC ecosystem offer amazing flexibility but chain sovereignty has its drawbacks. For starters, there’s no obvious platform on which to issue tokens backed by real-world assets. This means that on-chain representations of digital assets lack fungibility, as described more fully below. Noble aims to solve this.

Chain sovereignty also brings significant UX challenges that aren’t present in monolithic blockchain architectures. This can mean material switching costs and friction for users. Noble aims to solve this in the case of USDC by providing a single canonical token with deep liquidity that can be used in a variety of applications.

As an illustration (h/t to @NumiaData for the data), there are over 100 bridged (i.e. non-native) versions of USDC within the IBC ecosystem! Why? For one, assets that travel over different third-party bridges (e.g., from Ethereum to Cosmos) are not fungible. But for another, even within the Cosmos ecosystem, IBC routing can affect fungibility too. For example, if you sent Noble USDC to Osmosis, you could then use IBC to send it to dYdX, but it would be a completely different asset than Noble USDC sent directly to dYdX since the asset’s path is different (i.e., to preserve fungibility you need to send USDC on Osmosis to dYdX via Noble).

We have developed a powerful packet-forwarding middleware application to streamline UX for Noble transfers which makes a double-hop IBC transaction “one click” for the user. This means that the end user only needs to initiate a transfer from the source chain, and the asset will take the proper route to the destination chain automatically. In this regard, Noble behaves like the financial plumbing in the background.

Noble’s mission is to simplify asset ownership and transfer within the IBC ecosystem. We aim to bring the smooth UX of monolithic chains within the structure of a sovereign chain ecosystem. USDC is the first asset, and we envision many more.

Safe, simple, and seamless. 

Turnkey Institutional-Grade Asset Issuance

We aim to be the premier onboarding and integration solution for asset issuers.

Noble leverages SDK modules such as TokenFactory, built by the Osmosis team, to support asset issuers with their native integrations and builds reliable issuance and distribution channels for IBC-connected appchains and users alike. We are able to customize a wide array of functionality that an issuer requires, whether it’s for reasons of regulatory compliance or specific to a protocol.

The packet-forwarding middleware solution once again allows issuers to list their assets, knowing that users of any appchain will be able to seamlessly transfer those assets between appchains via IBC. IBC has been architected to accommodate multi-hop transactions without new appchains needing to maintain a large amount of infrastructure (e.g., archive nodes and relayers for each counterparty chain) to connect to other appchains in the IBC ecosystem.

Safe: Lead Market Adoption of IBC

Simply put, Noble is long the IBC and Cosmos appchain thesis.

The dYdX migration, expected to occur in Q3 this year, is a tip of the iceberg moment, in our view. Don’t get us wrong, we love Ethereum and the network effect it has created around smart contracts and the EVM. We stand on the shoulders of giants. But a “one size fits all” doesn’t work for everyone. And developers are starting to see the high degree of customization and flexibility brought by appchains and permissionless interoperability.

As a universal interoperability protocol, IBC guarantees reliable, ordered and authenticated communication. While IBC allows for any type of message passing, Noble will be optimizing for token transfers, as assets are issued on Noble and are routed to any IBC-connected blockchain.

Importantly, IBC is fundamentally different from bridging technologies such as Gravity, Wormhole, and Axelar which all require a validator set to sit between chains and verify the authenticity of these messages. These bridges have disparate trust assumptions that are difficult to reason about. At Noble, our fundamental belief is that cross-chain communication will converge on IBC as the standardized, open source, interoperable communications framework. As a result of that thesis, Noble is purpose-built for IBC.

While IBC is mainly confined to the Cosmos ecosystem, a number of teams are working towards extending IBC to non-Cosmos chains including Polymer and Composable Finance.

In the near future, we expect to see an explosion of IBC activity.

NOBLE’S TECHNICAL ROADMAP

Since Noble has been in ongoing development for a number of months, we have already achieved a number of key milestones including:

Chain development

In partnership with StrangeLove Labs, we’ve built a stable and secure Cosmos SDK appchain that conforms to industry standard smart contracting capabilities with regards to asset issuance functionality. This functionality allows the minting and burning of tokens by multiple entities as well as the freezing and blacklisting of addresses on the Noble chain by asset issuers.

Audit

Oak Security conducted a third party audit, which resulted in a number of bug fixes that improved the overall reliability and security of the Noble chain. Thank you, Oak Security, for your diligence here!

Testing

We’ve worked with a number of testing partners for both private and public testnets, including Hypha, to test Noble’s functionality.

Security

While the early intention for Noble was to launch as one of the first consumer chains of the Cosmos Hub, we have decided to monitor developments in shared security for an initial period of time as consumer chains begin to go live. We will continue to closely follow Cosmos’ Interchain Security roll out and are immensely grateful to the community members for their work on this important initiative.

For the purposes of this mainnet launch, and as a first step for Noble, we will be launching a Proof of Authority chain initially with a trusted validator set, representing a subset of Cosmos Hub validators. The validator set will be permissioned by equal shares of staking tokens and for which the tokens will have no value. Economic security will derive from the permissioned nature of the set as well as fees captured by the chain in assets issued on Noble on a block-by-block basis.

If a double signing is detected by Noble, the validator address will be “tombstoned,” meaning that the tokens and the address will no longer be usable for validation, resulting in the loss of all future fee revenue. The Proof of Authority model provides real economic cost to faulty validator behavior and thus provides economic security to the network that can be computed in real time based on past and projected fees.

NOBLE MAINNET LAUNCH

As part of mainnet launch, and in advance of more details on Noble digital asset issuance, we will run a Noble mainnet campaign where we will issue 500 frienzie (FRNZ) tokens to the Cosmos community (or otherwise, 500 million microfrenzies). While these tokens won’t be used for staking or for governance, they will be redeemable for Noble friendship bracelets and Noble NFTs on Stargaze!

DISTRIBUTION OF $FRNZ AND AIRDROP DETAILS

On March 27, 2023 at 5PM UTC, the Noble chain will distribute 100 FRNZ tokens across 4 Cosmos DEXs: Osmosis, Kujira, WyndDAO and Crescent. These DEXs will be seeded with 25 FRNZ tokens each, and paired with a minimal amount of ATOM. (25 FRNZ:1ATOM)

On April 3, 2023 at 5PM UTC, Noble will airdrop 300 million microfrienzies, totalling 300 FRNZ tokens, to axlUSDC holders across 10 Cosmos chains (Axelar, Gravity, Comdex, Crescent, Canto, Juno, Kujira, Osmosis, Iris, Secret) who hold at least 50USDC in their wallet. The airdrop snapshot will take place on March 27 2023 at 5PM UTC.

All Eligible FRNZ token holders will be able to retrieve their FRNZ tokens using their Noble address via Keplr!

On April 12, 2023 at 5PM UTC, FRNZ token holders will be able to start the redemption process to claim their Noble friendship bracelet leveraging SWIFT Protocol built on the Juno blockchain.

Throughout the duration of the Noble frienzies campaign, Noble will reserve 100 FRNZ tokens to distribute and reward quality contributions throughout the Cosmos ecosystem.

Last but not least, to reward all FRNZ token holders, any Cosmonaut that burns at least 50 000 microfrienzies will be whitelisted for a Noble NFT to be listed on Stargaze in the coming weeks!
