The art is inspired by the value of a sense of place for creatives — incorporating cartographic practice recalling the event's location in coastal Portugal, plus material elements reminiscent of gemstones, diamonds, and the compass giving us north stars in design. Back in 2018 I joined a Provenance Summit in Seoul. Still amazed at this wonderous crypto world, I attended a presentation by ‘FluffyPony’, at the time core developer on Monero. As he demonstrated the User Interface of Monero wallet, I recall thinking “So, there are more designers working on wallets!”. The layout showed hierarchy, simplicity, clear actions; I was impressed. The design was done by Christoph Ono.

I realized this only later on, when I looked through members of the Designers in Web3 Telegram group where Christoph often shares what he’s been working on. Since working on Monero, ‘Germany’s best kept secret’ has worked tirelessly on Open Design standards in the Bitcoin design community. Ultimately being collated in the Bitcoin Design Guide.

Christoph is leading the way on open-source design and standards. At Offscript he’ll talk about Open design and I’m so happy we’ll get to learn from him on this topic.

“Actually, I’m also a musician, I own a record label”, Amber told me, when we were discussing her contribution to Offscript. And so we decided to shine a light, quite literally, on Amber’s talents as a live performer.

At Offscript, Amber will give a music and art performance using video reflections on water. And will also be joining a panel discussion with Pamela Pascual and moderator Christina Rosalie. Having met these women through Amber’s kind introductions, I can say: this conversation is sure to make you see everything you’re building in a new, organic light and get your creative juices flowing.

I first met Alejandro virtually in April 2018 when he submitted a Pull Request with a UX review of Dapps; Including guidelines that are still relevant today (Use message signing for access 👏). Later that year we met in Berlin and learned that Curcuma is not best eaten raw. #Lifelessons

If you’re not familiar, please do check out Alejandro’s work on, and reporting of Open Money Initiative, where he works with Jill Carlson to research how people use money in closed economies and collapsing monetary systems. This work led me to reach out to Alejandro and ask for his support to run field research in Venezuela to understand payment networks. The outcome of that: a wild research trip that changed my perspective on real-life use of pretty much any Web3 project I come across.

Why a Crowdseed?

First up, this crowdseed is not a crowdfund. Proceeds of the NFT sale go into the discount you receive in return. Best case, you get a full ticket discount, worst case you receive a 10% discount, which is more or less equal to the cost of the NFT ($80).

Secondly, Offscript is a small-scale event, focused on building quality connections amongst creatives in Web3. To make such an event financially sustainable, as organizers we need to demonstrate its relevance. Alex Van de Sande (a.k.a. Avsa) was the first designer to work for the Ethereum Foundation and give a UI to the vision that we now often refer to as Web3. Needless to say it is an absolute pleasure to have Alex as a leader at Offscript. Where he’ll give a closing talk, taking us back to the early vision of Web3.

While working on Mist for Ethereum Foundation, Alex became co-founder of ENS; Those .eth names now used on Twitter. A project he returned to more recently both as a protocol governance delegate and contributor. In between his work for ENS, Alex co-founded another forward thinking project, Unilogin. An in-browser on the fly (multisig) account creator to use dapps without the need of downloading and installing a wallet and joined Balancer labs as a User researcher.

Around the time Alex was working on Unilogin, we met at a MetaCartel DemoDay in Berlin. Where next to be so kind as to let me borrow his laptop to present, he also opened my eyes on the impact true decentralization can and should have on a user interface. Where my usability background always taught me to limit choice and create more hierarchy, Alex argued how it might be better to have more options than as an ecosystem ending up with a single popular wallet provider. Better ‘UX’ yes, but also less freedom of choice and ultimately a vulnerable ecosystem.

You might have seen the pictures of the gorgeous main venue and villas where Offscript will take place. Together these comfortable hangouts create something special altogether: A pop-up resort.

All places are within a 3km (1-2mi) radius. With event production in full swing we’re looking to secure sufficient bikes so that you comfortably hop between your room or villa, the main venue and your neighbours.

About Circles

Offscript is designed to help circles of trust and knowledge emerge.

There’s decentralized and then there’s designers in Web3. The image at the top of this page shows an approximation of what the network of designers in Web3 currently looks like, a constellation of stars more than a network of circles. (Image is a graph of the user network of people in the Design in Web3 list.

The largest circle at Offscript is the circle of all attendees, following Dunbar’s number, of 150 attendees. Within this circle, we’re looking to create smaller groups, with an even stronger sense of connection and collaboration. We’re looking to do this because, ultimately we believe a strong design community and culture can help elevate the user experience of Web3.

The program and environment create space for serendipitous interactions, known to promote collaboration. Circles start to develop among the people you met on the bustransfer, during an activity, at your villa, in your workgroup, during dinner, etcetera.

Circles take on a more formal shape on Day 2 of Offscript. On Day 2 there are two breakout rounds of 90’ and 120’ each. In these breakout rounds, we’ll have 4 Circles on Web3 specific themes, and 2 Sessions on personal development planned. See our program. Next to this, there are plenty of areas to break out and spin up other circles.

Both are informal in nature, with Circles following an unconference format. Throughout the event, attendees can leave notes on topics they’d like to discuss.

About Leaders

As a participatory event, Offscript is light on speakers and talks. We refer to speakers as Leaders, because leaders inspire and focus on developing others. To run our Circles and Sessions we’ve invited a group of amazing Leaders to do just that. These are people that are experts in their domain (e.g. Wallets or Infrastructure), and great at facilitating conversations and guiding others.

What Offscript is

First of its kind, Offscript is an experiential offsite that connects Web3's ecosystem of artists and designers.

Offscript is an invitation to do exactly that. Go off script. Informal, offchain, no-code. Or as @avsa put it:

This isn’t a conference in a big city: instead it’s getting all the creative minds in web3 in the same Villa for an extended weekend.

As an event, Offscript immerses artists and designers in a multi-day resort style experience; hosted at main venue ‘Quinta da Comporta’, along with 10 satellite villas, all within a 3 km (1-2mi) radius. Including shared breakfast, lunch dinner, lodging, adventures, talks, fireside chats, workshops, food, and live creative jams with peers.

What Offscript does

Offscript is designed to help circles of trust and knowledge emerge. Circles that can live on and evolve into close collaboration and (informal) standards that elevate the user experience of Web3.
