The current crisis is linked to the government’s decision to raise prices of liquified petroleum gas (LPG) two-fold to about 100 tenge (0.23 USD) per liter.

After an economically excruciating pandemic, people have been hurting. This price gouge was the last straw.

Although the protests started in oil-rich Zhanaozen, the site of an infamous massacre in 2011 perpetrated by security forces, they quickly spread across the country.

They’ve gotten so large that the autocratic president, Mr. Tokayev, has called upon the Collective Security Treaty Organization, a sort of post-Soviet NATO, to crush the dissent.

I cannot help but wonder, however, if there is a link between Bitcoin and these current energy-related protests.

Ever since cryptocurrency mining has become more and more restricted, as when China shut them out, many miners moved across the border to Kazakhstan.

Did proof-of-work crypto mining such as used for Bitcoin and Ethereum play a role in Kazakhstan’s unprecedented political crisis?

Kazakhstan since then has become the world’s second country in mining, after the United States, with about an 18.1% share.

Likewise, energy consumption in Kazakhstan since the start of 2021 increased 8 percent as opposed to a more normal 2 percent average.

This all seems a little bit too coincidental for me. Just as more energy is being used, prices go up, sparking protests.

Then again, it is merely speculative.

I have also heard that Kazakhstan’s mining is done from environmentally-unfriendly coal-fired power plants but the prices that went up, as far as I am aware, concerned liquified petroleum gas and not coal.

I’d love to hear others’ takes on this.

Perhaps I am looking for something where there is nothing, or not anything along those lines.

Weekly Fees — Sum of total fees spent to use a particular blockchain in a week. This tracks the willingness to spend and demand to use Bitcoin or Ether.

Exchanges Netflows — The net amount of inflows minus outflows of a specific crypto-asset going in/out of centralized exchanges over the past seven days. Crypto going into exchanges may signal selling pressure, while withdrawals potentially point to accumulation.

Since early December we’ve discussed how macro conditions have been dominating the short-term outlook for crypto markets. Rising global uncertainty — starting with the Omicron variant, then the fed’s outlook as inflation grew and now also a potential conflict between Russia and Ukraine — has led to increasing correlation across markets.

Particularly, we’ve seen Bitcoin and crypto broadly move closer to risk-on assets such as tech stocks.

Highest since Covid — Bitcoin’s correlation vs the Nasdaq 100 reached its highest level since April 2020. Here are few similarities and differences with that time in the market:

Due to these reasons, the market has shifted to a regime dominated less by narratives and more by bots, particularly those trading based on correlations.

But wasn’t crypto supposed to be an uncorrelated bet? Well, over a time-frame of years it has been so, especially during up-trends. However, as soon as uncertainty starts affecting liquidity across markets crypto tends to tumble along as was the case in Q4 2018 and March-April 2020.

What comes next — While it is anybody’s guess what ends up happening with fed policy and the Ukraine conflict, on-chain data can help us identify key price levels of buying and selling activity in the short-term.

Key levels to keep an eye on — Using IntoTheBlock’s In/Out of the Money, we can identify clusters of addresses concentrated around areas of high buying activity

Zooming out, there are two main forces affecting Bitcoin’s internal metrics: the decreased supply available in exchanges and the “maturation” of holders based on the time that they have been holding.

Using Bitcoin’s unspent transaction outputs (UTXO) we can monitor the duration an address has held onto their BTC. By segmenting this by different time-frames we obtain a wholistic picture of all participants in the network and its ebb and flow.

Bitcoin distribution cycle — Bitcoin holders tend to follow a pattern based on price activity and new vs old entrants dominating. It goes something like this:

1. Price rises attracts new entrants, which leads to further price increases

2. Speculation gets out off hand as short-term holders (pictured in red and orange above) rush in while long-term holders sell and create the top

3. Price crashes, with many of the new entrants exiting with losses

4. Long-term players buy in again and accumulate a larger share of holdings

5. Right now, we seem to be between step 3 and 4, with Bitcoin hitting an all-time high in November and short-term traders dropping as much as 32%. Simultaneously, long-term holders are starting to increase their share of supply as shown by the black arrows in the UTXO age indicator.

6. A similar pattern appears when comparing Bitcoin netflows during the past two 50%+ crashes.

7. Comparing the drawdowns experienced during May-July of last year and the current, the exchanges netflows paint a different picture:

8. Ultimately, this suggests strong buying activity from holders, resulting in a potential supply shock as Bitcoin shifts from being held by short-term speculators to long-term investors.

This article will answer questions about the crypto bear market, such as; What is a bear market? How do you recognize a bear market situation? How should investors react to bear market conditions? Without further ado, let’s dive right in and understand what a bear market is.

In finance, the terms Bull or Bear market are used to describe the sharp increase or decrease of prices of stocks respectively. These terms are also applicable in the world of cryptocurrency.

Both terms are used to describe the direction in which each animal attacks. Bulls fight with their horns in an upward motion. This signifies an upwards shift (in prices) and subsequent investor optimism. Meanwhile, with their claws, bears tear things down. This downward motion describes the quickfire depreciation that can strike your favourite altcoin.

A crypto bear market happens when there is a sharp decline (at least 20%-30 30% from the previous high) in the prices of cryptocurrencies. A good example is the crypto market crash of 2018 that saw bitcoin fall from $20,000 to $3,200 in just a few days.

Understanding the cause of a bear market will help you to better understand how to react. Inevitably, the seeds for a Bear market are planted in an exuberant bull market.

When investors buy large amounts of cryptocurrencies, their significant investments lead to general optimism in the market, and this causes prices to soar, leading to a bull market. However, the bull market only lasts for as long as demand exceeds supply. When profit taking starts and bulls run out of ammunition and no new catalysts for continuous optimists appear, we have bear market conditions.

It is like a recurring cycle, and intelligent investors know where to pitch their tents at every cycle point. However, this is harder to do for crypto than in traditional currencies. The reason for this is simple; Crypto markets are still relatively new when compared to traditional stock markets that have existed for several centuries.

Despite this, there are many other ways to make the best out of crypto bear market conditions.

Let’s look at five ways to make the best of a crypto bear market.

There are times when a particular asset dips, and simultaneously, another one is shooting through the roof. Earlier this year was an excellent example of this; when Tesla’s founder, Elon Musk, announced that his company would stop taking bitcoin due to its carbon footprints. This move led to a reduced value of bitcoin, and simultaneously, the value of Dogecoin, heavily promoted by Musk, shot up.

If you have been investing in one kind of crypto currency, now is an excellent time to reconsider that stance. Bear market conditions are a great excuse to diversify your cryptocurrency portfolio.

Diversification is not only a great way to mitigate risks; it can also be a way to make a significant profit.

As much as it can be a good idea to diversify, you also need to hold stablecoins to ward off the bears. With stablecoins, you can enjoy lower-risk, high-yield crypto investments. If you convert your crypto into a stablecoin like USDC, USDT, FRAX and so on long enough, you can earn yields up to 10% through yield-farming protocols such as Yearn, and then with these returns, you can diversify further while maintaining your strong portfolio.

By investing in stable coins, you are taking less market risk. If you prefer to stay in pure crypto or have doubts about the regulatory environment for USD-backed stablecoins, your other option is to hold quality assets. The two most prominent coins which are, in relative terms, most likely to do less badly in a bear market are Bitcoin and Ethereum.

Compared to altcoins that have been known to drop 90%+ in bear markets, Bitcoin is an almost stable investment. By holding bitcoin, you can mitigate other risks, such as USD devaluation, and maintain exposure to the crypto market.

Ethereum is another stable crypto asset that could hold its own in a Bear Market. Becoming deflationary thanks to EIP-1559, an update through which ETH is now being burned for each transaction, as well as the imminent transition to Ethereum 2.0 are both fundamentally bullish news.

在 1980 年以前，治理（Govern）這個詞很少被使用，因為你幾乎很難設想一個群體需要新的一種社會制度。這就和優先順序（Priority）這個詞在 15 世紀被發明出來相同，在 20 世紀以前的人類沒想過原來優先順序還能加複數（Priorities），沒有想過人可能需要多重的目標，就像是沒有人想到在社會中居然需要複數的治理方式。

這就是現代社會潮流中出現的 新治理主義 (New Governance) 在新治理主義之下，我們發現在社會生活中我們涉及到的群體越來越複雜，我們同時是某個國家的國民、是某個城市的市民、某個地區愛好者協會的成員、某個臉書社團的頭號粉絲、某個 LINE 群組的管理員、某個線上遊戲公會的會長 … 等。

知名的以色列政治學家李維-佛爾 (Levi-Faur) 在探討治理的概念時，就認為治理中的美感延續著傳統美學，來源於兩者矛盾的同時存在 (1) 主觀性 (2) 客觀性，一方面，我們有主觀性的使命與宣言，另一方面，我們有客觀性且被所有人認同的治理程序。

我們幾乎可以說，DAO 這個名詞本身就包含了極為強大的客觀性，因為其所採用的區塊鏈技術，去中心化、不能竄改、透明化，這些都為 DAO 的底子提供治理很強的客觀支持。

在這強大的客觀性支撐底下，就讓許許多多的 DAO 也能伸展出極為強大的主觀性使命宣言，例如知名的 MoonDAO 目標就是送一個普通人上月球，不讓太空活動被商業巨頭給劫持。

這麼強的主觀性宣言，為什麼我們不擔心 MoonDAO 的人偷偷把錢偷走，或是 SpaceX 私底下把 MoonDAO 併購，或是 MoonDAO 可能背後都是一群航太專家搞一堆五四三難懂的東西…等。

就是因為 DAO 提供很好的客觀支持。

但是，我們可能也會誇大了 DAO 的客觀性，例如 MoonDAO 的管理員就說組織沒有營利預期，購買 MoonDAO 代幣的人可能最後也無法贖回自己的投資，而 MoonDAO 的治理流程可能大多數人也不做關心與監督。

所以從這邊我們就知道，一個好的 DAO 的宣言的確可以在主觀上吸引人，但是後續是否能有客觀的治理程序，支撐主客觀統一的一種對 DAO 的美感信仰，是非常重要的。

現在拉回來談宣言，我們已經認知到 DAO 提供很強的客觀性支持，所以在願景上千萬不要小打小鬧，要展現出一個很強的主觀性受人注意的切入點，由於 DAO 運作的特性，他是去中性化的，是一個比網路社群還可能更鬆散的社群（反之，你看到明星成員過於活絡，反而突顯他是中心化的），在這樣鬆散的社群中，最重要的是：激發出「人」的行動力！

為了激發出人的行動力，你的 DAO 宣言與願景，應該要能讓人主觀性感受到 2 種效果：

如果你的宣言與願景，是讓有興趣的人一看到，就能知道他在 DAO 中可以貢獻什麼力量，並且是可以如何在 DAO 的保護傘中大幹一場，那就非常棒。反之，如果別人一看到你的宣言與願景，他感覺不到他加入之後能做什麼，或是感覺到加入之後做事都要聽人分派，那他就沒有興趣深度參與。

另外，加入你的 DAO 中的人，他必須要能預期他在這個團體中是能逐步產生影響力，並且能干預重要決策，他能從一個小小的成員 (Member) 慢慢投射自己能成為一個利益關係人 (Stakeholder) 的成長路徑，而根據設計的宣言和市場和技術發展的大勢，他一定要身在其中。

很多 DAO 的宣言都有達到這兩者，但問題是，一加入之後發現裡面並沒有很好的激勵機制讓自己放手去做，例如沒有使用可追溯融資、沒有設立賞金任務、也沒有提供一些補貼，這種反差就會造成宣言失去剛開始的效果。

這邊我分享三種 DAO 可以考慮的三種宣言形式：

啟發式宣言應該要讓人有一種：「對，我覺得這個理想很好很棒，但真的是現在出現 DAO 這種模式才是最佳解！」的這種感覺。

焦慮式宣言則是要給人反思：「這個問題長期難以解決，大家被迫只能接受現實，但現在出現 DAO 終於可以解了！」的想法。

高大上宣言則是要使得人會想說：「這件事真的是太酷了，我一定要參與這個事情，用 DAO 居然能做出這樣的事情來！」的感受。

那現在我們用前面兩個效果來判斷：

啟發式的宣言比起焦慮式的宣言，更能在吸引人主動採取行為有更多的動機；而焦慮式的宣言更多的吸引人為了逃避恐懼，先選擇一個安全傘先加入的動機更強。

到這邊大家會發現我都沒有提到 FOMO (Fear of missing out, 錯失恐懼症) 的確你的宣言可以適當第去挑起有興趣的人心中的 FOMO，但我認為不要忘記，他加入之後如果和宣言感覺到落差，結果還是相同。
