The difficulties of the time made many of the most famous writers in history so in part because of their tragic lives as well. It may sound nostalgic, but sometimes I would like to transport myself to those pubs where drunks, artists, criminals and writers shared a beer. Places where tobacco smoke and the smell of ink were still breathed and where some of the ideas that have revolutionized the world have emerged.

The way we communicate has changed, but not the content or the message. The human is a social being, with consciousness and imagination and since writing was invented he has sought ways to communicate his ideas. Faced with the reduction of freedoms that we have experienced in recent years, people have looked for alternatives to continue doing what they like the most and writing and reading are undoubtedly some of them.

WRITE OR DIE

If you are new to Discord, the first time you enter it you will feel overwhelmed. Many people still do not understand all the possibilities that DAOs offer and the first steps can be complicated.

by Dylan

We need to back up a few paces to be sure we’re right about what is happening with the rise of blockchain technology. DAOs are essentially a use-case for blockchains that make it possible to conduct the vast bulk of business on-chain. There are many benefits to this structure, greatest among these being the availability of highly efficient distributed cognition and the low cost implied by the minimal participation commitment typically required.

Despite suffering setbacks every time we wanted to raise money, for example, the PageDAO still stands ready to essentially deliver its core vision more or less on time. In a traditional startup, this never could have worked out so well, but since we are a DAO and since we have a cryptocurrency, we’ve discovered that our organization is extremely resilient. We also have a very strong idea and a vision many people find very compelling, but perhaps our greatest strength is our ability to work together to produce an outcome in which the whole is greater than the sum of its parts by optimizing our behavior to effectively engage in distributed cognition together. The PizzaDAO corroborates this story by being an art project which buys pizza for people–with the right minds and an appropriate network, the sky’s the limit.

Distributed cognition, or network cognition, is the cognitive product of a group of people working on a problem together such that each human mind is able to apply itself in appropriate degree to an appropriate piece of the problem. Ideally, over time, the group as a whole is able to solve said problem, regardless of how complex it might become. One key component of the distributed cognitive apparatus of a typical DAO is the ability to recruit new members with new skill sets into the DAO to resolve particular issues as they come up.

The purpose of this section of the essay goes beyond simply defining distributed cognition to further explain precisely why the PageDAO going broke simply brought us all closer together and made it all the more certain we’d ultimately accomplish our objective, for example—this would have been impossible if we were merely another tech startup. Instead, it is as if being an on-chain DAO grants us superpowers and makes our idea immortal.

We all hold PAGE token positions of considerable size, and none of us has any intention of selling no matter how low the price goes. Yet, as long as the hope for the token remains alive, we all have a vested-yet-indeterminate stake in the success of the network. Judiciously, we’ve apportioned ourselves a very small proportion of the ultimate token issuance, but the initial inflation stage has revealed that the PAGE token is a powerful tool for the shared purposes of the DAO. Having the token improves our relationships with each other because it makes trust an easier ask between members of the group who possess the token.

This trust represents the elimination of the traditional startup’s primary blocker to effective distributed cognition at the organizational level: competition and jealousy within the group. Everyone in a DAO has an entirely transparent record of where things stand, and even if opportunities to participate are missed, the people who stick around on a project of the magnitude of the PageDAO are nonetheless sufficient muscle to move the ball over the goal line, so to speak. Larger DAOs and smaller ones with larger proportions of active members exemplify this principle to an even greater degree, with the largest being perhaps the $ATOM blockchain of the Cosmos Hub (valued around $10B, over 200M $ATOMs in circulation).

Even a declining price of the PAGE token only slightly diminishes the value holders place on it. Evidence of this conjecture is supplied by the 90% value reduction the PAGE token has undergone during the course of its life, plotted against the number of holders (which has remained almost completely positive, but is poorly understood because Discord shows up as one user instead of a network on Etherscan). The project is not generally very well understood by the outside community and has been abused by at least one bad actor, but the founders hold the tokens they’ve been issued for their services and this is the basis of the fluid interaction framework that makes the PageDAO able to execute distributed cognition with unprecedented efficiency, enabling rapid advancements on any number of fronts at the same time for an absurdly small amount of actual capital invested. Remember, the org raised a total of $53,000 last year - the technology we built for that price is probably at least a 10x of that value. We haven’t scaled yet, but seeing this firsthand has made me a firm believer in DAO structure.

Minimal coordination is required to ensure that DAO members do not double-attack the same problem, wasting efforts that could be better applied elsewhere. When coordination is effective, everyone picks a different puzzle piece and the entire collaborative enterprise is assembled. When coordination fails, projects stall. These moments are familiar to anyone who has seen the spinning hourglass icon or watched a loading screen for longer than was desirable – they represent a stopping of activity on the network. DAOs do not frequently grind to a halt because the primary activity of some members is creating projects and the other members become occupied with projects they like; a certain rhythm emerges. Individual projects may remain stalled indefinitely, only to kick back to life when some piece of obscure technology is invented that solves a key issue with open source software.

When distributed cognition works, it is able to orchestrate effortless cooperation across a vast and heterogeneous network to create impact at scale in unthinkably minimal timeframes. If humanity has a hope for solving the climate change dilemma, the first place to look for this solution is on-chain. Regen Networks has already done an unimaginable amount of work in this direction. The technology on display at Regen today is a shining example of the potential of distributed cognition in a new direction, using sensors and chemistry to model carbon sequestration ongoing in different places in real time.

If you want to read more about Dylan's vision, you can find the full essay in the ReadMe collection on Opensea. Thomas Dylan Daniel is a former philosophy professor turned biotech startup founder turned degen Web3 builder. He is one of the founding members of PageDAO.

"Cybernetics Perfected: How Blockchain Based DAOs Deliver Optimal Distributed Cognition" is an attempt by Dylan to peek into the future a bit and guess what may be coming next. In the Distributed Autonomous Organization, or DAO, we have what could be a newer, more robust social network model.

Everything from incentives that constitute a financial benefit to participants who behave in a particular way to financial penalties for bad behavior on a network is now possible. As DAOs proliferate, the question on everyone's mind is this: what makes DAO participation so enticing for so many people?

In this essay, Dylan elaborates upon ideas first developed in Blockchain Meets Ontology, arguing that the inability of actors to lie about on-chain events speeds up our distributed cognition. In fact, as the technology that powers them becomes faster and faster, DAOs will render new things possible as they perfect the discipline of cybernetics.

Page DAOs'official links

Website

https://pagedao.org/

Twitter

https://twitter.com/page_dao?t=8A47ptUX0vSBhllRVyE0sA&s=09

Medium

https://medium.com/work-in-progress-publishing

Discord

https://discord.gg/76UANbB57D

At some point Dylan and I linked up and started talking about putting a little team together to create some Hashmasks lore. We started talking on Discord and it grew naturally from a simple idea to tell a story. Dylan really took the concept to a higher storytelling level with the different mediums and the illustrations.

Dylan
White Chocolate approached me about this toward the end of last summer and it was just such a cool collaboration opportunity I had to get on board. Hashmasks, a digital book, an audiobook, a print book - AND, on top of it all, I got the opportunity to geek out about ancient greek philosophy and mythology. It was perfect! I actually left PageDAO for about a month to go stay in the mountains and just write the story, it was a hell of a lot of fun.

-How did you meet?

James
I have known Dylan for about 11 years, we were neighbors when I was working for a security firm in Texas. I have always had a comics studio in my house to keep up with my illustration work, since we have kept in touch he asked if I and any other illustrators would like to work on this project. I met everyone else in September and have enjoyed working with them immensely.

Daz
I was onboarded after participating in Pass the Pen, a writing community initiative that encourages creatives to get involved in a story and write it on the fly with others. It is held on the Tokensmart discord and was hosted by Page members Jim and ez. I contributed to a off the wall and highly entertaining story they were writing about space pirates. I know it was call pass the pen but I think I hogged the pen for some time so maybe, in the interest of channelling my enthusiasm into something else, I was approached by Dylan who asked me did I want to be involved in a secret project. I mean - who is going to say no to that. From there he introduced me to the wonderful team he had assembled - White Chocolate, Jo Blank, James, indefatigable, Phil and Spark Twain. We started having weekly meetings all centred around creating some lore for a beautiful hashmask and it just started rolling from there.

WC
It was Lindsey who made the connection. She had read an article I edited and posted in a discord's off-topic or shill here channel. She brought me in for an impromptu collaborative writing session. We all had a good time throwing out ideas and story lines. Things rolled on.

Dylan
We had a PageDAO member named Lindsey Lonadier who was very active in helping us promote and market the project, but it wasn’t working out quite right because we didn’t have much for her to sink her teeth into. One day, she brought White Chocolate into our Discord and introduced us to each other and we were literally just immediately good friends.

-What is your background?

James
Which life? I was a line medic in the Army, I worked for a security firm assessing risk and damage, then corporate sales, then I lost my physical ability to travel and I decided to go back to school for anything digital art related. I hold a BFA in interdisciplinary art, two AA’s in Graphic Communications and Design, an AS in Graphic Communications studio practices, and AA in Fine Art all with honors. In prep for my masters I am currently earning an AA in Motion Graphics and an AA in Web Design/Coding. It’s safe to say I am comfortable looking for the next adventure and enjoy creating art and environments in bleeding edge spaces.

WC
Just a dude here. Had an IRL job that was bleh. Did that job for a while, for too long. In 2021 being a corporate drone became unbearable. The plan was to finish writing a book that had been in process for over two years. Then crypto happened. As it turned out, a book happened. Not the book that was planned but a lovely story all the same. Life is funny like that.

Daz
Honours Graduate of Fine Art who got into writing after college. Spent some years writing terrible poetry in an attic in a rainy city in Ireland before graduating to terrible stories. Published some poems but kept honing my craft. I have always felt more of a pull towards creation so I have drifted in and out of various disciplines seeing what fit. Made music for some time in different bands, sold paintings and I am currently employed as a digital designer for a SaS company. The Mask of Ganymede experience has truly allowed me to take something and continually mould it and not just give up - like I normally would!

Dylan
I’m a philosopher by training - MA, BA, one peer-reviewed text I have authored. My resume is pretty impressive now, but I wasn’t actually able to get into a top Ph.D program so I had to find my own way. I’ve worked in sales, and in research, and I actually taught philosophy for a year. In 2017, I started starting startups and really never looked back. I’ve been a CEO a few times and notably Director of Research once, but my favorite role is DAO founder/organizer by far.

-How did you coordinate to carry out the project?

James
I attended the meetings for the artists and then I coordinated with Carlos Ruiz to have a primary artist on boards and concepts, then an artist on primary pencil, then an artist on “ink” and final export. Between the two of us we flip flopped the roles to increase workflow and made the deadline set.

WC
We met well and like clockwork on Thursdays in Discord and went at it. It took some time to get the group regular and moving from the storyboard to writing but once it happened, things hummed along. It seemed like there was always a new piece getting plugged in. We’d step back and there it was, looking more like an actual story with plot and dialog.

Daz
There were set meetings and spontaneous meetings also. It’s exciting how diverse the group is - spanning three continents - but this sometimes made planning difficult so I can only applaud Dylan and WC in their coordination of all that. The weekly meeting on Thursday was sacred though, and we found it to be a good time for all parties involved. This is where we were most productive and ideas would be fleshed out more. It was a very exciting time as all these brilliant minds were coming together and showing the fruits of a weeks labour and it was always great to see how far the collective vision had come. I can still remember the first time James showed us Carlos and his art and Jo shared the layout with us. I was just totally blown away and those meetings always left me with a fervour to do more and make the story better.

Dylan
I’ve had the good fortune of being involved with Rare Pizzas and meeting people of immense talent such as Jo Blank, who handled layout for this book. The PizzaDAO has been instructive - working meetings, how to continually hammer away at a task as people rotate in and out of the project, and what we should be doing together to stay on the same page are all lessons I’ve directly taken from the interactions I’ve gotten to have with Snax and Shrimp and all the other talented people from all over the world who came together to form Rare Pizzas.

-Where does your passion for writing come from?

James
OH, I don’t write, I just make pretty drawings for the writers of the world, but I do love the passing of a good epoch.

WC
It’s just there. There’s a pen and paper at all times, mostly. When there’s not, a really great idea comes and I have to frantically find some way to write it all down. For whatever reason, those thoughts that spring up and sometimes turn into stories prefer paper and pen, not my phone. Then we have a session where a lot of these scraps with some theme in common get together with my laptop and end up in the fireplace after taking residence on a jump drive. In summary I have no idea where the passion comes from but do believe that the brain is like a two-way radio that picks up bits and pieces of the universe’s defragmented knowledge to reassemble. My radio prefers to assemble them onto paper, lined 3x5” index cards and gel ink is like A tuned to 432 Hz. Perfection.

Daz
I used to read Bukowski when I was younger and thought (foolishly) - this seems easy. Boy, was I wrong. Being a writer is very difficult but it truly is a labour of passion. It’s the reward you get from teasing out an idea, seeing a character you created coming to life before your eyes - it’s a very special and unique feeling. I think all the passion I have for writing comes from being a ferocious reader and hoping to create a world in someone’s mind like they have in mind. I feel it is an extremely rewarding and gratifying pursuit also and I love to do it for me, even if what I write only sees the inside of a drawer.

Dylan
Catharsis. To be entirely frank, I have to write. I can’t keep it all bottled up inside. The act of typing my thoughts with precision seems to ossify them for me, it makes them easier to deal with. Going back and refining the prose that results is another extremely rewarding task because it’s a lot like re-orienting my thoughts, making sure that they line up with my will. It makes me stronger somehow, and sometimes there are things I cannot avoid writing about. When I wrote Formal Dialectics, I struggled with the concept and did the research for four years - neuroscience, linguistics, psycholinguistics, linguistic anthropology - I even worked in a lab for a while, measuring eye motion as people read text from a screen. Then I took all the essays that contained my notes, and I put them into order, and began the process of refining it. During that process, I became an expert on one of the most abstruse subjects in the world - the relationship between mind and language - and it also seems to have laid a useful foundation for all sorts of amazing things that have come before. If you aren’t writing, you aren’t getting to have these sorts of experiences, and in my view that is very very important.

-What do you think of the NFTBooks market?

WC
It’s young. We know it will replace the web2 books model just like brick and mortar got done in. Things are still clunky right now. Wallet and phone integration isn’t fully there. Ganymede is very close. It’s not hard to download and create an audiobook playlist. It’s not a seamless app either and that makes it fun to be a part of these times. Enjoy the NFT book market in its state of flux.

Daz
I think it is an exhilarating time for crypto and the NFT space. We have seen it explode the last few months with art work (both beautiful and questionable) and it was only a matter of time before other disciplines found their way there. And I think that it makes a lot of sense with books - I mean, we are already very used to reading on our phones, e-readers etc so it is not too much of a leap. I think the future of books could be glorious if a user can buy directly from the writer.

James
I believe the technology we have know will advance at a pace we have never seen before, where the hard work we have previously seen on articles of paper will be captured in new formats.

Dylan
We’re up to 50 books in the ReadMe collection, the IPFS setup is faster and more beautiful than ever, and here’s what I think: I think we’re about ready for prime time. Things will move quickly for the next little bit here.

-What can the holders expect in the future?

James
More Stories and adventure whether written or visual.

WC
Zero expectations is the key to avoiding disappointment. Happiness is going from zero expectations to immersed in Hashmasks lore. Where it will take you, what thoughts it’s going to challenge you with remains to be seen. We created some openings in Ganymede to build the storyline out and not only for eagles!

Dylan
Tokenholders can expect to be part of a community around NFTBooks, Hashmasks, and cryptocurrencies. Events, additional drops, and things such as the PageDAO Official Member NFT will provide immense value to token holders who manage to pick up a copy of The Mask of Ganymede. This book is the first of its kind - has text, audiobook, and even print-on-demand functions all baked into it! - and it is going to be a prize to hold the rest of your life, I really believe that.

-Can I buy the NFTBook and give it away to someone?

WC
Absolutely. The NFT has been gifted and giving paper copies will be a thing when all the elements come together for print on demand.

Dylan
Yes indeed! We are looking at the NFTs themselves as a sort of distribution right; so the 1024 possible MoG token holders will have our complete permission to use our Print on Demand service to say, put a book in consignment at their local bookstore. We’re also looking into what it would take to allow the token to be “staked” into something like a web viewer on a third party website. The idea is that the IP follows the NFTs and we want to build out a distribution network by providing our reader base with the power to distribute the thing for rewards. These are the beginnings of a decentralized and permissionless publishing house that people can opt-into if they so choose.

-Outside of NFT technology, which is your writer/novel that you liked the most?

WC
Kurt Vonnegut. He wrote a lot. There’s plenty to choose from. The works feel both fresh and familiar. There are some chuckles and musings on the human condition or society. He’s a grand contributor to the world of written word.

Daz
Tough question - it's like asking a parent who their favourite child is. You will probably just get all the kids name for fear of them playing favourites! But I do find I have particular affinity for the work of David Mitchell and an Irish author Flann O’Brien who wrote some amazing works including At Swim Two Birds and the phenomenal The Third Policeman.

James
I would have to say Neil Gaiman as of late but I would have to agree with Daz that it’s a straw pole in a sticky situation to pick your favorite. Steinbeck’s another that can hold my attention, or Asimov is somebody I can always dig into to escape. I am an enormous fan of Terry Pratchett and Neal Stephenson, but as much as I like sci-fi, I’m actually a bigger fan of philosophical stuff like the work of Robert Pirsig and Pierre Hadot’s The Philosophy of Walking is perhaps my favorite book of all time. The power that comes from walking is neurological… I believe that there is quite a bit of evidence suggesting that walking could activate the motor cortex and add a sort of rhythm to the neural firings that might somehow improve cognition - whether it’s just more horsepower or better coordination, walking seems to help us process things. I’m a huge fan of effective investigations into these sorts of subjects.

What would you say to those who say that all NFTs are scams?

WC
Absolutism is the language of tyrants. This is an illustrated novel and audiobook based on a piece of the NFT space's most respected collections, the Hashmasks. Neither are scams. Be a tyrant not. Do us both a favor and read or listen to this book. It may help calm your mind.

Dylan
The people saying this don’t understand the core concept. Hopefully they’re learning quickly though! NFTs are essentially bearer bonds for arbitrary data; they can be used for scams or for anything else. People saying they’re all scams may as well accuse the written word of being a scam, it doesn’t make any sense because the technology itself is of course agnostic and can be used for scams but can also be used for legitimate purposes.

James
Outside of the cryptocurrency world of doubt, the utility of smart contracts will change the world and allow artists to control their working environments with a great deal of efficacy.

The DAO ecosystem is so new that finding information can be a headache for anyone. Those who contribute for a month can be considered "experts" and are in charge of onboarding new members who want to help. And that is why this collaboration makes a lot of sense. Both projects will join forces to make both art and literature shine in the DAO ecosystem.

The first history book of the Hashmasks world, The Mask of Ganymede is a triumphant story of redemption, packed with a refreshing cast of characters and a clear goal: to tell a true Greek epic in today's technological world, based on Hashmasks and technology that powers them.

Argument

Ganymede was the son of a nobleman, with a beautiful appearance, and his attractiveness ended up captivating Zeus, who neither short nor lazy transformed into an eagle to kidnap the young man and take him up to Mount Olympus.

Zeus ascended the prince to heaven and transformed into a constellation: hence the origin of Aquarius, the young water bearer. However, such "honor" was not enough to reassure his disconsolate father, who, as you can imagine, was hurt by the departure of his son.

That is how Zeus sent Hermes with expensive gifts to calm the nobleman: a golden vine, the work of Hephaestus, and two horses so fast that they could run on water. Furthermore, Hermes assured Ganymede's father that the boy was now immortal and he would be cupbearer to the gods, a position of great distinction.

The powerful image that evokes this story was painted by several famous painters. The project is constantly growing and seeks to make collaborations and give more visibility to this wonderful story.

The collaboration with MaskDAO will make the community grow and more contributors will join. There have been some very interesting conversations recently that could make the future for both of them bright.

We are living times of changes in our lives. The world economy is going to undergo enormous changes in a few years. Cryptocurrencies and blockchain technology still have a long way to go. In recent months we have seen the NFT market explode and it makes perfect sense that the next trend could be the NFT book market. We are more than used to reading books on our mobile phones or electronic readers, so the difference now is ownership. The future of books could be glorious thanks to web3!

The team

White Chocolate - ringleader and organizer

T.

Human beings have always wanted to preserve their culture and transmit their beliefs and knowledge. Our story begins when writing was invented. From hieroglyphic writing to NFTBooks, the way stories have been told has changed a lot, but not their value.

It was the Sumerians, around the year 4000 BC, who invented writing. They impressed the first symbols with a pointed tool on a clay tablet. Although writing and literature are not synonymous, they are closely related. It was centuries later and through the invention of new writing techniques (papyrus, parchment, wax tablets) that literature became popular. Its rise came with the invention of the printing press. As this technique was improved, the literature reached more people and the knowledge spread. With paperbacks in 1501, many gentlemen read books on the go.

Another milestone in literature would come in 1970 when Project Gutenberg gave birth to the first electronic books. During the early years, digital books should archive works in the public domain. It was from the year 2000 when the writers published in digital format. Stephen King’s novel Riding the Ticket pointed the way forward, selling 400,000 copies in just one day. Years later, in 2007, Amazon launched Kindle, the first electronic book reader.

Mobile phones have become part of our lives and being able to access millions of books with just a couple of clicks would have been magical years ago.

With the 21st century, we have seen the use of some technologies such as Big Data, Artificial Intelligence or Cloud Computing. Of all of them, the one that most promises to affect all markets is blockchain. Basically, blockchain is a set of technologies that allow keeping a secure, decentralized, synchronized and distributed record of digital operations, with no third-party intermediation.

We reach the year 2020 and a pandemic shakes the world, and while millions of people in the world suffer from restrictions, a technology that everyone talks about, NFTs, emerges. Either they love them or they hate them, and that makes me think that human beings are sometimes too passionate. NFTs are non-fungible tokens registered on the blockchain, that’s all. Blockchain will be integrated into the internet, it does not come to replace it. Web3.0 is here to stay.

WHAT IS WEB3?

Web3 is a decentralized web built on a blockchain structure, the same technology that is behind cryptocurrencies like Bitcoin or Ethereum. To understand what web3 is, you need to know what web1 and web2 are.

The web1.0, also called static web. It was the first era of the internet. Users did not interact and only a few created content. Project Gutenberg was launched in web1. At the end of the 90’s appeared the web2.0, also called the social web. Thanks to JavaScript and html5, they increase the interaction. Users could create content and distribute it easily. It is the age of Amazon Kindle and blogs. During these years mobile phones became an indispensable accessory for millions of people. Web2 implemented countless improvements but also had certain drawbacks: centralization of profits and power, surveillance and data selling, and aggressive advertising. This is where web3 comes into play. Also called semantic web, which is committed to being more open, intelligent, democratic and transparent than the previous generation.

At the beginning of the internet, you had to put in your email and password, then you connected through Google or Twitter, and now you will do it through your digital wallet.

“Blockchain is a concept and Bitcoin is the implementation of that concept.” The possibilities that blockchain offers are not limited to Bitcoin and other cryptocurrencies. In blockchain, the data is distributed through different servers and its management does not depend on a central “entity” (they are decentralized), they are not modifiable a priori (they are immutable) and they are cryptographically protected (they are secure).

NFTs can store any type of file, from videos, photos, books, movies, resumes, employment contracts, etc.

DAOs irruption

DAOs are decentralized autonomous organizations that are governed by code, are based on smart contracts, and mostly run on the Ethereum Network. The rules on which the DAO will be based will depend on the code that is inserted in those smart contracts.

DAOs, roughly speaking, are a group of people with common goals who use blockchain technology to interact with each other. These people are organized in a transparent, democratic manner, without hierarchy and with open access. The absence of authority in a DAO sustains its success in deciding through member votes. Nobody will modify the smart contract without the approval of the others.

To carry out these votes, DAOs usually have governance tokens, which are given to members in different ways. By holding those tokens, users gain voting power within the DAO. Although the latter is the participation modality that is most commonly seen among DAOs, it is not the only one that exists. Other organizations use a system based on shares that cannot be purchased directly, but permission must be requested to join through a specific proposal.

To better understand how a DAO works, I recommend watching this illustrative video.

The possibilities offered by DAOs are enormous. Never has it been so easy to collaborate with people from different countries. Through decentralization, users with cryptocurrencies do not depend on a bank to transact with each other, nor on platforms like Google or Facebook to publish their content. Once you understand the significant change that web3, NFTs and blockchain entail, you realize we are facing a true technological revolution.

Finally, PageDAO

Like almost all DAOs, PageDAO arose from the collaboration of people with the same philosophy of life and with a common mission, to decentralize book publishing. A small group of writers began a journey full of hope and motivation.

WIP Publishing Company was founded first. Whose priority is to democratize access to literature. WIP Publishing came about after a year of conversations between a group of readers and writers who wanted a better experience. Initially, the idea was an online magazine unlockable via NFT. Now the shared goal of this growing group of people is to build a Library of Alexandria no one could burn down on the blockchain.

The first NFTBook was minted in January 2021. The pdf book reader was embedded in an HTML page hosted by IPFS (decentralized cloud file storage for Web3). As of fall 2021, there were more than a dozen NFTBooks in the OpenSea “Genesis” collection.

It was then that they launched a token so that the decisions of the project would fall on all the members. They created PageDAO, whose mission is, like WIP Publishing, to promote creative literary activities on the blockchain, the metaverse and beyond. In its attempt to democratize book publishing, the $PAGE governance token was born.

The PAGE token is a token with books at its heart. Our $PAGE utility token serves as a currency within the DAO to reward literary creatives and supporters for their contributions.

PageDAO will provide more transparency into book performance while minimizing costs for authors and publishers through NFTbooks.

What are NFTbooks?

NFTBooks comprise hidden files stored in IPFS that are sent to a dApp that is rendered in a web browser, allowing the user to access the content. Each NFTBook is a digital certificate of ownership that tracks and values the content of the work and has the property of digital scarcity, allowing the set of innovations to be described in this document. NFTBooks contain an amazing feature that many NFTs have, the ability to earn royalties on the secondary market. In addition, a book can now have múltiple authors/collaborators and the profits can be received in a multi-sig wallet. NFTsBooks can contain text, audio, images, and videos. Everything from physical objects to virtual worlds is possible. NFTBooks will also offer the ability to order a hard copy at printer prices through the dApp contained in every book.

https://mint.nftbookbazaar.com/

During the creation of the technology, NFTsBooks certain drawbacks appeared: royalties, unstable prices, book design, book security. Each of these obstacles has been tackled by a small team of innovative and dedicated NFT pioneers. The result is a book market like the world has never seen before: eBooks are non-transferable and there are no secondary markets, and paper books can never be immutable, which is why NFTBooks are unstoppable.

PageDAO will revolutionize the publishing, buying and selling of books through the NFTbooks minter. A simple tool with which you can launch your book on Opensea, the largest NFTs market in the world. With digital ownership and scarcity, the NFTBooks markets will be more efficient than anything before. Even Gutenberg Press and its diverse backgrounds couldn’t create books as durable and censorship-resistant as NFTBooks.

Welcome to a revolution in literary technology!

Why publish on PageDAO?

There are a huge number of authors who can’t follow through on their dreams because of the current book publishing system.

The authors have two options, look for a publisher, which will decide if the work is good in a centralized way, which we dislike. Besides other problems such as pirate publishers that exist today in which they take advantage of the hopes and despair of writers.

The other option is to self-publish and the easiest way to do it is through Amazon kindle. It is undeniable that Amazon democratized publishing by allowing anyone to launch their ebook for free and put it up for sale in the largest book market in history. That’s great, but we’ve already talked about what web3 entails. After all, if Jeff Bezos wanted to tomorrow, he could delete all the books published on his platform. Just like banks, which can block your money without your permission. A widely used phrase in the crypto world is, “it’s not your keys, it’s not your money”. The same can be carried over to digital books. Through NFTs you are storing those books on the blockchain, which is immutable.

Also, to be fair, listing on Amazon is free, but if you want to launch a quality product, you’ll need to spend money first. Personally, this is where DAOs and web3 win hands down over any other way of publishing. The possibility of collaborating. To publish a book, you will need a cover designer, one or two text editors and several Alpha readers. Also, later you will need to have knowledge of marketing, SEO and social networks so that your book does not get lost among the thousands that are published daily. In PageDAO you can find all these actors that will make your publication much easier. Through tools like joint wallets and voting platforms like Snapshot, the publisher now belongs to the writers themselves. Together, the future of the DAO is decided. And together you can contribute to one book/projects someone is working on. Power within the DAO is determined by the number of $PAGE tokens each member has. A wonderful possibility that exists within the DAOS and also Page DAO, is the use of grants. Any user can make a proposal requesting a crowdfunding for their project, and if the rest of the DAO members agree, the user will receive their $PAGE grant with which to start working.

PageDAO is currently available on the Ethereum and Polygon network. And that’s yet another reason to post on Page DAO. Many people say that cryptocurrencies pollute, but that is far from the truth. The current banking and mining system, industries such as fashion or entertainment, or even the internet, are more polluting than Bitcoin. But based on those opinions, PageDAO mints his NFTsBooks on the Polygon network, which is more efficient and less polluting than Ethereum. Not to mention commissions, which are almost non-existent in the Polygon Network.

Decentralized distribution allows all market participants equal access to the technology and financial tools needed to create great new properties for books. Enabling NFT technologies will allow a whole new set of properties to be integrated into the book market for the first time in history.

It is possible to create a completely decentralized blockchain-based library of NFTBooks that pays its authors and promoters more to make and distribute books than traditional marketplaces. No matter the literary genre, scientific travel books, biographies, monographs, poetic fiction, etc. PageDAO intends to compete with the publishing industry. The goal is to enable book writers and readers alike to benefit financially from their participation in this revamped and revamped publishing industry.

Another problem that PageDAO comes to solve is piracy. Both in classic books and in digital content, there has been a lot of authorship theft and to this day it continues to be a headache for authors, buyers and publishers. Blockchain solves counterfeiting problems.

You have three options to join Page DAO with which you will benefit.

If you are a writer: you will have financial and moral support from the other members of the DAO. Publishing your content through an NFT allows you to collect royalties if the buyer resells the book.

If you are a reader: buying an NFTbook, besides the love of reading, allows you something that is not possible in digital books, resell it when you have already read it, or give it away by sending it to the wallet of a loved one. Another option is to hold onto it hoping the book will become the next Harry Potter and you can say you have the original digital edition.

If you are an investor/collector: the NFTbooks besides the literary value, give you the option described above, you can buy an NFTbooks of the next Edgar Allan Poe and it will be registered in the chain of blocks that you bought and hold that NFT.

Where are we going?

Writers still only “have” two real options: impress a literary agent who holds the keys to the publishers, or self-publish. Both paths are unnecessarily painful, and only the lucky, the privileged, or the immensely discreet make a steady income from them.

Nobody said that being a writer was easy and at PageDAO we know it, since as independent writers, we have suffered the same. Also, the worst thing is that the path of the writer used to be lonely. That doesn’t have to be like that, the more you get into the world of DAOs, the better you’ll understand.

Discord right now is a hive of ideas and in Page DAO it’s amazing how people from all over the world, with the same passion for literature, collaborate with each other. Currently over 30 NFTbooks have been released and there are 6 collaborative projects that have received grants from the DAO to carry them out. It also has two daily sections where you can receive $PAGE for writing short stories. PageDAO, besides everything we have described in this article, offers you the possibility of publishing your books while you learn or teach knowledge to other writers.

The way we communicate has really changed in recent years. We spend more and more time glued to a screen.

In the beginning, a small team of techie crypto writers joined forces around a shared vision to publish books on blockchain. Digital assets unlocking deep knowledge have an uncharted course in today’s market with challenges from fan buy-in to multi-contributor royalty management. This team set out to face these challenges head-on.

The first NFTBook was minted in January of 2021. It was a basic proof-of-concept, but succeeded in existing 100% on blockchain. The PDF book reader was enclosed in a HTML page hosted by IPFS; the decentralized cloud file storage for the Web3 Metaverse. This meant on-chain books were real: no centralized host to disappear, no server to support.

In the weeks to follow, WIP Publishing, a crypto-first book publishing house that aimed to help fellow authors mint their books as NFTs began to take shape. Supported by a core of dedicated multidisciplinary enthusiasts, the community began to blossom. By fall of 2021, there were over a dozen custom-created NFTBooks in the “Genesis” OpenSea collection.

WIP Publishing, Crypto-First Publishing House

As time went on this team continued making improvements to the NFTBook reading experience to make their books more affordable and accessible than ever before.

Ethereum + Polygon compatible contracts

Embedded PDF reader on OpenSea

https://twitter.com/page_dao/status/1493625582487158784?s=20&t=oahG061aYvjhlwATYqOk0Q

PageDAO grew from the community of writers that had been created, sharing vision, brainstorming solutions, and connecting with other active creators in the crypto space. The governance token $PAGE was given to partner communities that shared an interest in books-on-chain and several projects and events were spawned.

On example of an innovative collaboration was the highly anticipated “Mask of Ganymede” NFTBook released in September of 2021 in collaboration with MaskDAO featuring all new tech:

Mint-on-demand ERC-721 NFTs on Ethereum

Ebook + Audiobook reader

Gated access for token holders

Print-on-Demand

"Mask of Ganymede" NFTBook Minter

Today we have an open NFTBook minter for anyone with a PageDAO Member Card to mint their own books. All books are open and free to read in the ReadMe Books collection on OpenSea.

The NFTBook minter provides the simplest single page, ultra-low-cost, and zero censorship mechanism to put books on chain. The reader experience is intuitive and seamless, embeddable and immutable. The ease of creation has led to 38 books being created on-chain in a month. With price and supply in the creator’s hands it’s interesting to note that most authors opted to keep their work affordable. The average price is around $25 USD, and even with low pricing, over a quarter ETH of books have been sold.

PageDAO users have documented their mental health journeys, shared their short fiction, written manifestos, republished an immutable Gutenberg Bible, waxed poetic, and launched digital literary experiments that range from blog-post to novels.

Where are we heading next?

NFTBook Factory: No-code smart contract builder for mint-on-demand NFTBooks.

Hyper Reader: More connected, social, and interactive book reader built specifically for NFTBooks.

Want to get involved?

Join the PageDAO discord community of writers, readers and creatives working to bring literature to blockchain.

Follow us on Twitter and join a weekly DAO Twitter Space on Tuesdays @ 6pm CST.

We are PageDAO.

Our mission is to fuel creative literary pursuits in blockchain, the metaverse and beyond.
