At present, some automobile enterprises have begun to promote their high-power fast charging technology. Although high-power fast charging is a trend, for most new energy owners, they will still choose home piles to charge more often. This time, the new national standard has the trend of turning the current AC pile into DC pile.

First, look at the actual situation of electric vehicles. Most electric vehicles have two charging ports, one is fast charging port, also known as DC charging port, and the other is slow charging port, also known as AC charging port.

The power grid outputs AC, but the battery of electric vehicles can only accept DC. The fast charging pile will directly convert AC into DC and input it to the battery of the electric vehicle. The slow charging pile requires the on-board charger (OBC) on the electric vehicle to convert AC into DC and store it on the battery.

For the charging pile, when the charging power of the DC pile is fully downward compatible with the AC pile, and even if it is slow charging, the DC can meet the higher power than the AC, especially under the condition of higher and higher battery capacity, the AC slow charging is bound to be eliminated.

Before the announcement of the new national standard, in 2019, more than 20 enterprises including Weilai, Xiaopeng, BAIC, Geely, Volkswagen and Audi began to participate in the preparation of industry standards for DC piles below 20kW.

At the end of 2021, the National Energy Administration approved the industry standard technical conditions and installation requirements for off board chargers of 20kW and below, which has been officially implemented since March 22 this year.

From the perspective of vehicle enterprises, it is hoped to eliminate the AC pile, because the existence of AC pile requires the vehicle to be equipped with AC charging interface and OBC. These two hardware undoubtedly increase the manufacturing cost of the whole vehicle.

According to the data, if the car enterprises cancel the OBC and the AC charging pile provided by the supporting and refit the 7KW DC charging pile, the BOM cost of 1000-2000 yuan can be saved for each car, and the large-scale waste can be reduced. At the same time, the potential safety hazards will be reduced and the vehicle space will be released.

Only retaining DC import is more friendly to car enterprises, but it will increase the manufacturing cost of charging pile. Therefore, the AC / DC operation is completely handed over to the charging pile. At present, the price of 20kW DC household charging pile is about 3700 yuan, while the price of 7KW AC household charging pile generally does not exceed 2000 yuan.

Although the new national standard has not been officially released yet, vehicle enterprises and charging pile enterprises must have been deeply involved in the formulation of the standard, and the current result may be the reflection of the game between all parties.

In fact, some car companies have taken practical actions to show their abandonment attitude towards communication slow charging. The new models of Weilai and Xiaopeng have upgraded the household charging pile to DC interface, and the whole vehicle only retains DC as the only interface.
