Welcome to the first edition of the crowdsourced playbook on successfully building DAOs, with contributions from >60 DAOists from across the DAO ecosystem.

This playbook contains experiences from 8 years of DAOing, and it should help understand DAOs, why people are building them and how to actually build one. As the field is everchanging, we’ll be updating the playbook at least once a year.

We believe DAOs are the future of coordination, and together we will make it so.

Intro

DAO Accelerationism is a meme, a movement, and a headless brand dedicated to activating the DAO renaissance. Why? Because Web3 is about building decentralised systems, and we cannot reliably have decentralised systems without decentralised organisations to govern them.

Why DAO?

In our world, we already have centralised versions of everything. The world was built this way as we did not have other technologies. We know there are many problems with centralised systems such as corporations and governments becoming unaccountable and extractive towards people they depend on.

We NOW have new technologies that allow us to build decentralised systems.

Unfortunately, we CANNOT have decentralised systems if they are controlled or owned by centralised groups or organisations.

In order to continue the path of decentralisation, we must allocate time and capital to pushing the DAO movement forward. There is no other option.

Temporary Disillusionment

It‘s true, vast majority of DAOs so far have failed, and nobody is even talking about DAOs anymore - outside the niche of hardcore DAO enthusiasts like ourselves 😂

Some say the D in DAO stands for Dysfunctional.

The thing is, we’re just early. There were barely any proper tools and mental frameworks. Our task now is to show people that the way we‘ve been DAOing, isn‘t the only way to DAO. To show that:

Decentralised doesn’t have to mean chaotic
Autonomy doesn‘t mean a lack of accountability
Voting doesn‘t have to mean whales get to decide
DAOs can be leaderful, not just leaderless
DAOs aren‘t going anywhere!

Ultimately, DAOs succeed for the same reason blockchains will. We‘ve entered the network age and an age of exponentially increasing complexity, which makes it rational to decentralise both intelligence and execution.

The bigger picture

Citizens of most countries are unhappy with how their governments operate. Corrupt politicians, bloated bureaucracies, opaque decision making & spending. Meanwhile, disengagement at workplaces is at an all time high, and corporations are some of the last bastions of dictatorship.

How many nation states are accountable to their citizens? How many corporations are accountable to their employees & users? Surprising that we want something better?

Can we make DAOs into transparent & accountable organisational forms that start to replace corrupted governmental functions & overly-extractive corporations?

We think so 🤷‍♂️

The most flexible career path

A new career path?

Finally, we think DAOs will offer a legitimate career path, allowing people to set their own perfect mix. Hopefully, with the best of all worlds:

Community of having a job
Freedom of being a freelancer
Ownership of being a founder

With a bonus effect:

Security of multiple income streams

Moreover, tokens allow us to bootstrap networks that reward things we find valuable, rather than only what makes the most $. DAOs allow us to align workers, investors & users into a single group of stakeholders — and after all, the factory is is not going to pollute the town if it's owned by the townsfolk.

DAOG scenecoin

DAOG is a rallying cry for those who believe DAOs are the future of coordination. We’ll use it to signal alignment with the meme and to reward those who are advancing the DAO ecosystem.

5-10 years from now at The Grand DAO Awards, holders of DAOG will be considered the critical mass that started the DAO renaissance.

When you receive DAOG, it's customary to immediately forward some to the best DAOist you know.

Accelerating the process

DAO Accelerationism starts by organising events, before growing from a single community into a decentralised movement with a headless brand and a well oiled DAO propaganda machine.

Starting yearly projects:

These projects will continue being sustainable through sponsorships, with small DAOG fees added later. % of the budget will always go towards buying DAOG to redistribute.

We’ll also be helping other events by promoting them through the DAO/acc newsletter, telegram group & twitter account, as well as introductions to sponsors & small DAOG grants. Organizers, get in touch!

As mentioned already, our core objective is to spread the DAO meme, aggregate DAO knowledge and help the new generations of DAOists start DAOs while avoiding pitfalls.

About DAOcember

DAOcember is a virtual schelling point for the people who think DAOs are the future of coordination. This year, it brought together 69 DAO veterans representing 80+ orgs from across the ecosystem, with the goal of educating & helping the new generation of DAOists avoid the pitfalls.

Event Details

What: 2 weeks of talks, panels, demos & workshops - all about DAOs

Our main goal is to aggregate DAO knowledge & help the new generations of DAOists.It splits into:

What’s next?

Taking all of that content & turning it into the course + feeding it to DAO Master AI.

The ultimate goal is to professionally produce a full video course & run cohorts, then iterate with more veterans & live sessions; but let’s take it one step at a time!

Our goal for the next 2 months is to transform all of the recorded content into a full DAO course, based on which we’ll run the first cohort of DAOs.

All goes as well as so far, there will be more proposals to take it to the next level, produce video content etc.

We also plan on continuing DAOcember every year, making it a more decentralized schelling point with even more DAO veterans & DAOs being represented, then again using the newly gained wisdoms to reiterate on playbooks etc. etc. etc.

Long term, we see DAOcember as a virtual equivalent of all of us landing in a major city for a week of events - except accessible to anyone & with an explicit goal of passing on wisdom from the veterans & the trenches, to the next generation of builders.

Besides, as an event for digitally native organizations meant to empower anyone, doesn’t it make most sense that it’s a virtual event? 🙃

But don’t worry! We also see a future of people organizing local meetups & digi-physical hackathons around DAOcember! 👀

Our wish

Alright, back to the present reality! 😅

We only need about $10k to cover the cost of organizing DAOcember AND write The Ultimate DAO Playbook 2024.

We already produced a load of value for the ecosystem & some of the DAOs involved.

Judging by the feedback so far, the event has been a great success for very cheap. Trailer video alone has been seen by almost 20k people - pretty much the whole DAO ecosystem - and 400+ people attended the opening session.

As you might notice, there are no separate perks for different tiers. You are expected to pick a tier commensurate with the stage of your DAO &/or the state of your treasury.

If you cannot afford any of these packages, DAOcember is also open to accepting contributions in kind - meaning you can contribute equivalents of this value in labor.

Then what?

In the coming week or two, we’ll be minting Hypercerts & airdropping them to the buyers of NFTs, as well as directly using the NFTs minted as voting shares in the DAOcember DAO.

If you’re sponsoring a project, you’ll get your NFTs separately.

Funding Distribution

Funding distribution will depend on the DAOcember DAO & the proposals it ends up supporting, but my rough estimate is:

~40%: Compensating those who dedicated significant effort to organizing DAOcember.
~60%: Production of a comprehensive DAO course, benefiting the entire DAO community.

Fund allocation will likely happen through a combination of direct proposals & Coordinape circles.
