So much art was dropped along the way, by CFW himself, artists in our community, and from all of the amazing artists and projects we have collaborated with since the beginning.

Our family grew so much this past year, and we are greatly humbled to see so many folks sticking around as we continue to learn to navigate bear markets, and a shifting NFT landscape. We are doing our best to adapt, and continue growing as individuals in a community.

We wanted to wrap this year up with a short recap, and with two major updates we are very excited about. Read on to find out a little about what’s coming next.

"A Memoir of Friendship" - CFW, 2022

The Dispensary // Claimables

As the market rollercoaster did its up-down-down-down BS, CFW and the rest of the team did what we know how to do best: make more art, keep designing, build more, and just stay busy to ward off all the demons and noise. Using the convenience of Manifold’s apps, CFW went all out cojones-to-the-wall on community art drops with the Pillheads Dispensary.

The tradition of gifting never stops around here. It’s beneficial on so many levels. The artist gets their art out in the world so it can live its own life. Holders are rewarded with more amazing art, and community value increases as a group. And ultimately, with community feedback and collaboration, the direction of the project is influenced in a positive direction; it’s a form of decentralized democratization we exercise over in the Stacyverse that is very organic, and unhurried. Less stress, steady support, more gratitude all around.

The utility is literally MORE DOPE ART

Go check out the entire collection - plenty of gems folks are accepting offers on!

Old but new mechanics are incoming, as we take what works, and make it work even better than before. And if you haven’t already, maybe go pick some pills up out of The Jar before it’s too late!

https://app.manifold.xyz/c/the-jar

Major Updates // Early 2023

In addition to all the dependable good stuff like burn mechanics, airdrops, and holder claimables, CFW has cooked up something absolutely WILD stuff for January and beyond. Let’s cut to the chase and drop the alpha:

January // PXLLHEADS

Our Pillheads are about to go dynamic NFT mode, wherein dual PFPs are held within a single token. Thanks to all the possibilities that come with being able to modify metadata with NFTs, CFW is stepping up the game with a major dev & art update, and it’s called The PXLLHEADS Metadata Upgrade.

WAIT HOLD UP, DID YOU SAY DUAL PFP? PXLLHEADS? WHAT? Check the tweet, you heard it here first. Get hype.

https://twitter.com/pillheads_NFT/status/1603438133831700480

We’re just going to sum up the relevance of this upgrade in one paragraph here. Firstly, it will effectively double the value of the token (DUAL. PFP.). Secondly, instead of sticking to the same repetitive aesthetic, CFW is essentially tipping his hat to the roots of our digital culture, by going back to the roots of it all with pixel art. From 8-bit games at the beginning of it all, to the CryptoPunks that are one of the most iconic faces of blockchain culture, this is a massive step in a direction that observes both our past and our future simultaneously. Lastly, it paves a path towards bridging multiple aspects of the project into one place; who knows, maybe the future of the project will be defined by more than just two styles of art!

Winter-Spring // Claimables Upgrades

Community artist support has always been, and continues to be a large part of our identity as a project. And so, CFW has brought us to the junction where Community Claimables will be turning into Artist Artworks! This comes with a couple of implications.

"The King of Coloured Candy" - CFW, 2022 - Nifty Gateway Drop

The most important thing is that we maintain a level of quality with the work being produced, presented, and represented under our roof. Thus, claimables will likely not be monthly as they have been since July - we cannot rush good art, and we want to encourage the artists we are working with to drop what they deem meets their standards.

This is all in line with our general collaborative nature with artists, but is a slightly new approach, as it will give artists more sovereignty with their work, and allow our universe and lore to expand in various directions. Our lore should grow with our community.

Lastly, it will hopefully lead to a new set of collectors joining us. As you all know, our Team is made up of folks who started out with, and continue to put out 1/1 work, now bolstered with multiple editions as we meet market conditions how we can. Not everybody is into PFP collectibles, and not everybody is into singular artworks. We want everybody to feel welcome; there are different perks for holding different types of tokens, and everybody is welcome to partake in our ecosystem how they see fit. In general, I believe that folks seeing the 1/1 of art will be exposed to projects like Pillheads Generative, and realize after a closer look that these are not generic collectibles!

Personal // Notes

Following is a shameless plug for my own publication over on substack, but also because it is the only place you can hear CFW speaking! Worth a listen if you are curious to hear what our Founder sounds like, and get a feel for his vibe beyond Discord and Twitter interactions.

https://orbgasm.substack.com/p/transmission-2-cfw

As a team, we want to express a huge THANK YOU to everybody that has stood with us along this tumultuous journey, from dropping a collection as the market crashed, to building how we can with what we have through a bear market. All of you that continue to express your support, engage, and are paying attention to what we’re doing; you are the MVPs in all of this.

Happy New Year friends and family, old and new. See you in 2023!

#IPWT

Almost every day in the web3 space, we hear about folks being rugged, scammed, phished, hacked, and more. Even though some of us have been here for a while now, we are still surprised when things go pear-shaped for certain projects and/or individuals in the space. It’s the wild west out here on trustless networks, and we are still on web2 technology that is incredibly exploitable.

On a day where Zeneca_33 had their twitter account phished, and multiple projects lost control of their Discord servers, we were all thinking about this tweet the day prior from Yuga Labs:

https://twitter.com/yugalabs/status/1549157338665336839

And so this bullshit finally happened to us. And I’m going to tell you the story of how it happened, and what our takeaways are from the situation, now that we’ve dealt with it firsthand. I’ll start from the beginning.

Around 3-4 months ago, we reconfigured a ton of things on the Discord server, in anticipation of the coming Pillheads Generative mint. About a month after that, we revisited the setup, and beefed up some security measures, as we noticed a sudden spike in Discords being compromised, as well as more rugged NFT projects coming out, where their dogsh*t looking minters would drain wallets after signed interactions.

The fake minter looked about as bad as this. Would you mint from a site like this?

Part of our security measures were to reduce permissions for some roles, continue encouraging everybody on the team to change passwords, and also to introduce some new preventative measures in the form of bots. We were aware that the vast majority of compromised servers were the result of mods and/or other lead roles in projects having their personal accounts phished, or otherwise compromised.

I’ve always been nervous about security on the web - ever since the early 90s. Not much has changed between then and now; the vast majority of attacks where somebody loses control of their accounts are a result of social engineering. I consistently yell “PEBKAC,” about anything that goes wrong on the web.

How did events play out?

So, when my phone started blowing up at roughly 6PM ET on Tuesday, July 19th, and I saw messages rolling in from close friends in the space saying “DISCORD HACKED,” “DISCORD UNDER ATTACK,” and “PH DISCORD GETTIN REKT,” my reaction was initially somewhere between pure panic and really hard facepalming. The realization that this bullshit had happened to us hit me hard.

I had to be sure: was it my Discord setup that was compromised? Did I give a bad player in the space the wrong permissions recently? Did I get phished? Could it be I got SIMjacked? I went through dozens of scenarios in my head before doing anything. The message notifications on my phone started getting a little crazy.

So I took a deep breath and opened up Discord on my laptop. I immediately went to the Ph Discord, and noticed a ton of scammy links in announcements, a bunch of people calling errant behavior out, and a bunch of mismatched roles in the right sidebar for users. I checked wickbot to see why it wasn’t doing its job; after all it exists for this purpose. It should be catching mass role changes, repetitive messages and link sharing, and a slew of other things.

Wickbot was gone, I was locked out of web frontends for all of the bots, and there were some very not-CFW-like comments and announcements from CFW himself.

“We’re minting”

“We closed channels to avoid FUD”

“Click this link…”

It hit me immediately that CFW’s account had been hijacked. Before I could do anything else, I got the boot, along with the rest of our dev team, and some of our core team members. UnkFunk immediately started blowing up Potadough and CFW’s DMs across multiple platforms, trying to contact them, while I began assessing the situation. We immediately began changing passwords and emails associated with our web facing accounts, including our hosting, team google account, and socials. Whitelights and 0xDaemon went to town on looking into the contracts and minter the scammers dropped. Our family at Sideways DAO began alerting everybody in our circles about CFW’s account being compromised, and the PH server being unsafe. We told everybody we were hacked, and that they should not trust any links from us.

Welp, there go the devs @#$!

Within 2.5 hours CFW had regained control of his account, we had verified each others’ identities (VC is great, and so is sharing IRL experiences at NFT NYC to call on to prove identities), and had managed to boot the malicious actors out of the server, as well as resetting his password from a secure device with a fresh discord install. The damage was done though. Some folks had interacted with the contract, and our server was wrecked. We were now into mitigation, assessment, and full on discovery mode.

For the record, I am blown away by our team’s (core & mods) response time, how calm everybody was, and how well we handled it with our close community of friends and family in the space. I can’t shout all of you outside of the team out, but you know who you are, and we are ever thankful for you moving rapidly, and gracefully to warn other projects about what happened. Extra special thanks to Flashfox for moving very rapidly to keep other NFT projects informed of the situation.

Most importantly, a huge and massive shoutout to CFW for immediately addressing the problem, and getting ahead of things safely and smartly. It is clear as daylight to me that he has assembled the right team for this project, especially after this debacle.

A whois query on the URL the scammers had their fake minter on

So, you may ask, what the fuck actually happened to CFW’s account?

Problem Exists Between Keyboard and Chair

For 2 months now some ding dong we thought was approaching us in good faith has been asking about a collab/partnership. They posed as being part of a project called PhasesNFT. They presented in a very legitimate manner. CFW has been so busy, he hasn’t had the time to follow up on their discord invite, or other serious interactions with them. Finally, a day before his account got hijacked, they reached back out again.

He found their Discord invite was broken. He brought it up and they sent a link to connect him to it through his browser. A seemingly harmless Discord invite, to resolve “a common issue they had been experiencing with Discord invites recently.” Some of the questions they asked collected info about when he is available. They figured out when he would be online, and when he would be deep asleep.

Upon clicking the link, they grabbed his Discord token, and following is a breakdown of how that works, and how they used it to hijack his account, bypassing 2FA, and any other login requirements his account has. We are sad to hear this very same thing happened to the folks at Metamint. We are thankful for them sharing this tweet:

https://twitter.com/MetaMint_io/status/1549546521015746560

I urge you all to pay deep attention to these videos, as they break it down incredibly well, and display how token grabbing works. It’s an entirely redundant, and ancient method of phishing, applied in this instance to a Discord-centric vulnerability. Insanely simple.

I would like to note that once the “hackers” went to work, they proceeded to place a seemingly harmless webhook integration in as well, and it’s a good reminder to all to check what integrations they have enabled in general, at any given time. I will be sharing a much more technical breakdown of what our audit revealed at a later time.

Standard practice, standard fuckery. Screenshot from July 19th.

We’re only human, right?

We are. And this means this could happen again. It’s been happening since Nigerian prince scams showed up in our emails 2 decades ago, and it’s continuing to happen in one form or another to people who are not new to this space.

In this case, I was depending on Wickbot to shut this kind of problem down, but since CFW was the top-level owner for the bot, that got negated in entirety. This time around, we have placed a dedicated account as server-owner, that only a limited number of us have access to. This account will only ever be open in an incognito window to perform administrative tasks, or make adjustments to Wick’s settings. And during those sessions, no other websites will be visited, and no other links will be clicked.

Additionally, we are getting even more strict about accounts that join the server but do not stay active, or manage to verify in a period of time.

As we find better solutions over time, we will adopt. We have already changed some settings on our server until further notice, and are taking some steps to get our project’s interests back on track. We think you should know about them as well.

Our Discord server is closed to the public at the time of this article’s writing. Only team members and mods can invite new folks. If you want to get back in after you left, or as a new holder that is seeking to stay informed, please connect with our main Twitter account, @Pillheads_NFT.

We are limiting access for many things to our NFT holders only.

True to the nature of interacting with the web3 ecosystem, our concept of time has been decimated yet again. The past 6 weeks simultaneously feel like a year and a blur at once. Looking back has consistently overwhelmed me with how much has happened in such a short time.

We’ve got a lot to get into, but I would like to preface this with a huge shoutout to our team, and to our community. After our initial mint did not go very well, we all had some concerns about what’s next. None of us gave up, and nobody stopped coming up with creative solutions and ideas. Our level of determination, ethos, and patience were all tested, and I feel that we came out with our souls intact, and our commitment reinforced.

And to be perfectly clear, by “we,” and “us,” I mean both our team and our community. This has been an amazing trip with intense highs and lows, and I can confidently say that we have all arrived at a really good place, all things considered. Bear or bull, we are making it happen.

01 // Numbers

Let’s get into what happened by starting with a quick timeline and some stats.

Launched mint // June 16

Total mints June 4: 631/6655

Total holders June 4: 237

We went to mint and were not anywhere near happy with the outcome. See the article linked below for full details and how we approached things. This is a personal letter from CFW:

https://mirror.xyz/pillheads.eth/zmgC1VdTgXAcgl11eFDHj6C8xShdXtxZcMhKztaXhHI

Refunds & Airdrops // July 9 & 10

All folks from previous mint received a 50% refund

All OG Pillheads received stacked airdrops

Please see above link to CFW’s personal letter for details. Along with our project manager Potadough (who is very active behind the scenes), we think it is very pertinent to note here that has observed our tradition of giving back to our holders, during a time when he is at a loss. While we were considering our next steps for mitigation and management, CFW was focused primarily on ensuring our ethos comes first.

Launched free mint // July 11

Total mints July 15: 6655/6655

Total holders July 15: 1,440+

As of today (July 15th), our volume is just north of 110 ETH, and we have 1440 holders and rising. While the floor does what the floor will do, our community has been absolutely amazing. Talk about “Up Only.” I have no accurate way of expressing how humbled and thankful we are for both our past and new members, and how impressed we are with the quality of engagement.

For those interested in seeing a holder/token breakdown, Etherscan has a great tool for this: Pillheads Token Holders

Some of the number we were seeing this week as our volume increased were also really fantastic. We ranked and trended visibly on Icy Tools, Opensea, and various other NFT trackers. In fact, on OS, we were ranking as high as 73rd among Ethereum projects on day of reveal.

73rd spot in Ethereum Rankings on Opensea

02 // Free Mint: What Happened?

We’ve gone over what happened during Free Mint on the 11th in Spaces, on Discord, and VC with various folks. We believe it’s important to lay all of this out clearly here, so that everybody can understand what went down during Free Mint Phases. We learned some big lessons, and hope that others can also benefit from learning about the chain of events that occurred.

The first thing to understand, is that our contracts were not designed for a free mint scenario. They were designed with quite a few things in mind. Here are the major ones:

A 1st presale state for previous holders and Happylisted minters, at 0.1 eth.

A 2nd presale state for winners of a Public Raffle (via premint.xyz), at 0.11 eth.

A 3rd and final state for the public; all unminted tokens would be available to mint.

The implementation of a “Soulbound” mechanic until public sale

Gas optimization to a massive degree by using the erc720 standard

1 txn per wallet (multiple tokens minted at once, once)

Read full article about this here:

https://mirror.xyz/pillheads.eth/nrLfhxufyPaHVcI8DoA3fE1FiEP0Aw0YPMgM2ghSEj4

All of these tenets were a product of our belief in a fair and equitable approach to minting, based on unfair outcomes we had perceived from a massive number of other NFT projects. We also wanted to stay innovative, and bake in some bleeding edge mechanics. Coupled with the market conditions, our attempts at trying to stay ahead of the curve prevented us from minting out.

As per the letter from CFW shared above, we decided to push on with a Free Mint.

At
10PM ET, July 11th
we opened up Free Mint Phase 1. This phase was intended to allow Previous CFW Collection Holders the ability to mint, prior to releasing a full on public mint phase. To ensure that past holders that had already minted during 1st presale in the previous mint could still mint (remember, 1 transaction per wallet) we had to get creative. So, the dev team came up with a creative solution to create a web2 based solution.

First, we set the contract to the public sale phase - the third state from the previous mint, wherein anybody can mint. We planned to rely on our contract and our website’s adherence to EIP-712 in order to ward off users from minting on-contract via platforms like Etherscan and using a wallet-signed encrypted message to access our mint function. We then set the API endpoint to target the merkle tree that contained the presale 1 snapshot list of previous CFW holders (minus the Happylist wallets).

We then combined this approach with a web2 database to help enforce our two mint-per-holder allowances during that two-hour period. It verified holder status and kept track of how many they had minted so far. Having spun up a secure DB tracking mints, and a front end lock out for minting after reaching a 2x limit, we then also set a hardcoded integer max value for the minter, of “2.” This way, we would further enforce only requests for a maximum of 2 mints per txn from the website itself.

We thought this set of hoops would be able to obfuscate access well enough to last the two hours necessary, via gating the front-end. We realized that this is an exploitable system, but believed strongly that incentive to game the system was relatively low. This is the kind of sh*t that makes web3 so secure for minting collectibles in the first place, in comparison to the circus we would have to navigate to build a comparably secure web2 application.

To quote Whitelights directly, this “bubble gum and duct tape solution” was the best option we had to mitigate problems. We truly believed that there wouldn’t be enough incentive for somebody to go out of their way to find an exploit in our system. Ironically, it’s in moments when you really don’t think something will happen, it will happen - especially when someone has the intent to take advantage of something valuable.

Which is ultimately what happened. A person (ask us about it on Discord) that has developed a botting system for his “users,” essentially spotted a way to leverage the fact that public mint was turned on (unlimited mints). By reverse engineering the obfuscated EIP-712’s
r,s,v
values for a connecting wallet, they were able to mint repeatedly from our contract. By flipping the Metamask signed message for their wallet and copy-pasting it into Etherscan (or whatever they are using), they essentially went around the gated front end entirely.

Once we realized something was going on, we stopped mint. Some damage had already been done, and hundreds of tokens landed in botted wallets. Some of the folks utilizing the botting service turned out to be on our server all along, and the creator even showed up in person. Folks even posted about how cool this app was on Twitter later. They were quite proud of this, and we were quite flustered. I will not go through the number of creative swear words I came up with during that time, while we proceeded to regroup as a team and figured out how to proceed.

Our three options to proceed at this point were:

Close mint, spend a week or two building a full on, beefy web2 application that would ultimately also be potentially exploitable, and cost us a lot of time.

Deploy remaining supply through a brand new contract in the next couple of days, which would result in a second collection on the chain.

Stay the course, and proceed with public mint at midnight.

As you all know now, we made a decision to go with option #3.

At this point, some weird, dark, cosmic humor kicks in for us. We had a version of the minter sitting ready for a full on public mint, in a github branch. It was tested, ready to go, and had nothing in it but the correct endpoints. Phase 1 was entirely removed, and only Phase 2 was in it. Zero gating, zero logic pointing at any other API endpoints.

At
12AM ET, July 12th
I pushed the Phase 2 branch live. And as the branch deployed, built, and verified, we watched in horror as Phase 2 did not show up, and found out the git branch had reverted as well as our hosting on AWS serving up a cached version of the minting site. Thankfully, the site did load the correct endpoint for the sale, and many individuals were able to mint at this time. By the time I had re-merged, re-pushed, and re-deployed an updated branch, the collection was sold out, and there was a vein in my forehead about to explode.

Note: the above technical breakdown of how things work and what came to pass is a collaborative effort of our dev team working together. Whitelights is our smart contract wizard, 0xDaemon is our glue between web2 & web3, and I (orbgasm) am the front end masher & dev team manager.

Token Distribution top 100 | src: Etherscan

03 // Luck & Humanity

We got a little lucky here. That luck has everything to do with our current community, and how secondary sales were handled, as well as the enthusiastic minting that ensued. No one single wallet minted enough that we got royally f***ed out of being able to have a healthy secondary market.

The bottom line is that public free mint went down, how a public free mint should go down, as soon as we opened it back up. We had healthy distribution of quantities, and folks immediately began to scoop tokens up on secondary at prices below 0.01 eth. Within hours, our floor was up from as low as 0.001 to 0.02 eth.

The humanity of the matter is simply that enough of you believed in CFW’s vision and our team, that we were able to arrive at this stage in the project. And once again, I cannot find the words to accurately express how insanely humbled we are by that. Our team is built entirely on trust and is held together with respect and integrity. We are all artists first and foremost, and the thing that brings us the most joy here, is that the entirety of CFW’s creation is now revealed and visible by the public.

To create art with the intention of sharing it with the world, and have it sit in a dark room never being seen, is a dark dream that fuels anxiety, and diminishes the human spirit that gave it life. Even if it is a creation that is not received well by the public eye, the fact that it has been perceived by others, is a form of resolution that is incomparable to any other.

I speak for the core team and our mods (and probably against CFW’s humble wishes), when I say our priority has been that CFW is treated with fairness and respect, and that his work and intentions with it, are seen by as many people as possible. The money we may or may not have made are afterthoughts compared to this.

https://discord.gg/pillheads

04 // What’s Next?

Loaded question! We’ve clearly had to re-adjust our timelines and methodology here, as some of our ambitious goals need significant funding to actualize. I can, however, lay out some of our immediate and short-term goals.

Pushing Visibility - we are dedicated to getting our project seen, and our holder count increased. Stay tuned for social campaigns, and some larger discussions with multiple communities.

Extending on the prior point above: we begin reviewing and accepting project collaborations requests again. Be sure to get on our Discord and open a ticket
after July 18th
.

Rearranging the furniture - we will be updating/upgrading our Discord environment to a post-mint layout, and taking into account community suggestions and ideas. This will not be an overnight process, but rather a long and steady one.

Community Events - More Spaces & Stages, and other community events to keep the community connected and engaged.

As always, our Community Manager (and keeper of the ultimate ASMR voice) unkfunk will be rolling out announcements to keep you all informed on all happenings. I encourage anybody reading this to tune into his ability to focus and keep things patiently on track when it comes to community affairs.

As we start getting things sorted, the Team will continue to revisit our Vision, and release information as we come to conclusions that we believe will benefit our community. Please stay tuned on both Twitter, and Discord for the most up to date information.

Thanks for being here!

-o

https://twitter.com/pillheads_NFT

split://0xcBdfE547aA1cd67a72343A7A286dF58e60d23d0c

Choices 6. Free Mint 7. Amends 8. A New Direction 9. Final Thoughts

Dear Community,

1. Gratitude

First off I’m incredibly grateful to the ones who chose to take the pill & walk with us on this trip of love, art & good vibes. It’s been an amazing few weeks since we launched pH. Every day we are greeted with beautiful conversations in our Discord server. People are more than excited than ever to see their newly revealed Pillheads. This truly gives me & the team a sense of fulfillment & hope.

2. Honesty

I understand this will be disappointing for a few, but here’s the truth. We haven’t sold out.

We believed that we had a chance even when the odds were stacked against us. We thought that people saw what we’ve been pursuing & pushing for. We hoped for a better outcome and situation than the one we are in right now.

We believed that art could win.

3. Expectations

When we first set about on this generative journey as a team, it was a very different time in the NFT space. Dreams seemed achievable more quickly because of the nature of web3. The sentiment of ‘we’re gonna make it’ was echoing across the Metaverse. Projects sold out as quickly as they launched. After consistently showing up every single day for the past 1 year & making countless connections during this time; the thought of exploring a generative project seemed like an attainable dream in my journey as a digital artist.

4. Reality

It saddens me to know that despite the insane amount of hard work, passion, and resources that the team & I have poured into this: At the time of writing, we are sitting at 631 Pillheads mints & 237 Pillheads holders. The project now requires a different direction, and changes will be made. But this does not invalidate the vision that we shared or the statements that we made.

We know who we are, what we have created & where we stand.

Although this seems disappointing, this is not the end. This is a chance for us to pivot in our approach and find a different way to make Pillheads the success we all want it to be - but not in the way that we imagined.

5. Choices

Some voices in the community suggested that we drop the price. However dropping the price to anything below 0.1 ETH felt like an injustice to me, my art & my team.

We would’ve taken this call of a price drop much earlier in this journey if it were an option that we thought was worth considering - with factors like my investment to date, the schedule of deliverables, team recompense & the constantly changing market.

Yes, there may be other options that are worth exploring, like trying to push harder with our marketing or capping the mint. This would also mean that our exhausted funds, resources & energy would stay stuck in this stage of minting while we would not even get a chance to do more. That doesn’t sit right with me.

Other voices in the community suggested that we need to have patience. As much as I agree with this truth - it will not guarantee that a Pillhead will have a holder, or that a sellout would be achievable in the next few months based on the very fact that we are in the worst & unpredictable market that NFTs have ever seen.

Things are changing very quickly here.

I’ve seen projects not mint out, and eventually sell the entire supply over a period of a few months. And I’ve also seen projects with mint still live even today, with no progress. I do not want Pillheads to meet that same fate. I feel that we need to take action now when there is still an opportunity, before the tides in web3 shift to a new Meta.

If we’re constantly worried about this phase of minting, we will not be able to move forward to do what I’ve always wanted to do with Pillheads. So we will continue to walk the path of the vision that was laid out but at a different pace, with a different approach. The bottom line: I do not see this as a failure.

6. Free Mint

We are a group of artists that do not see making money as our metric for success when it comes to Pillheads. I’m not even desperate to fill our wallets at the risk of losing a community. If every single one of these Pillheads does not land in a wallet & get revealed, then we have truly failed, at least in my eyes. Keeping all of this in mind,

I’ve chosen to make the rest of the mint free, rather than drop the price. If that’s what it takes to get them out there, so be it.

I hope that you - our beloved community - value & protect the art as much as we do. Once we do take this approach of free mint, the value of the Pillhead will be set by each & every one of you. We still believe that we can rally enough people to build a strong foundation for the commune that we’re seeking to create. It falls in the hands of every holder to ensure we have a larger collective voice in the space to spread the vision & beliefs we began this initiative with. Just as it was essential to have your support with our previous step, we need your support for this next step more than ever.

7. Amends

This also brings us to a very important part of the discussion. I want to begin this new path by making sure that nobody feels misled, duped, or rugged in any manner. We’ve been having some tough discussions over the past week & the approach of fully refunding everyone who minted was carefully considered.

To be completely transparent: I personally have invested $76,000 USD into the Pillheads project since March of 2022. The high unforeseen costs were due to many reasons like render-farm failures & my effort to ensure that every single Pillhead was of the highest standard - just to name a few. The project has made a primary revenue of 47.91 ETH to date. After distributing percentages to the team which they deserved (ranging from 1% to 14%), I now hold 25.87 ETH [21.08 ETH (44%) + 4.79 ETH (Community Funds)] from the project revenue.

■ I am not willing to take back the ETH that was distributed to my team, because they deserve that and a whole lot more.

■ I will be giving back everything I made to provide a 50% refund to everyone that minted using the 25.87 ETH

■ Holders will be airdropped 2 tokens for every Pillhead owned. So, for example, if you hold 3 Pillheads, then you will receive 6 Pillheads for free.

■ We will also record OG minters as our early investors, including a new role in the Discord server. We promise to provide first-in-line early access for all future deliverables from the Stacyverse.

8. A New Direction

I think it’s important to mention our stance on the secondary royalties now that things are different & we do not have a primary source of revenue. Secondary royalties from this project will be split across the team in various percentages. These split royalties will be distributed in perpetuity, for as long as the project lives on the blockchain. However, this step shall only be taken once I recoup the initial investment that went into getting Pillheads this far.

9. Final thoughts

I hope you understand where I come from, and why we have to take this step. I hope you embrace this new direction for Pillheads. I want to remind you of the Manifesto for Pillheads so that you know we are still the same at the very core of everything.

A message of caring.
Creativity is medicine for the soul. By allowing inspiration to flourish, we nourish our personal well-being.

A message of hope.
Even when things seem dark, imagination can lift us out of despair. Art is the ultimate chemical elevator.

A message of love.
Visionaries are powered by love. When we come together as a community to experience positivity, we feed our souls & hearts.

I know I am not going anywhere and I can only speak for myself, not my team. This has been a hard ‘pill’ for all of us to swallow as a team and community. I respect that.

I’ve been here for more than a year and I will continue being here, creating every single day. Pillheads are a part of who I am in web3 & I shall work every single day to bring to it the glory that it deserves.

What do the next few weeks & months look like for Pillheads? Wearable airdrops, holder art drops, physical toy pre-orders, community events - those are just a few things to look forward to!

Thank you for continuing to be here! ☻

With love, CFW

While we are not immune to the peaks and troughs of market movements, we are able to exist as humans not defined by it; we are all contributing something to web3. Artists offer sensory modes of escape, new perspectives, and build foundations that push technology and design in new directions. Collectors and curators offer new mechanisms for determining value, and what new ideas will influence future generations of artists and projects.

As mint date draws inexorably nearer, I decided it was a good time to do a quick and casual artist insight interview on Discord. There are a few things about CFW’s creative process and mind that I have come to respect immensely, and wanted to share his own words with you all.

Our conversations with CFW are always so productive, and oftentimes fu*king absurd. We end up laughing like complete idiots about ridiculous things, from weird Discord emotes and stickers, to art we find on and off web3. As always, this started out casual, and as always, I made it get weird and deep. We still ended up on degen humor somehow (wtf is wrong with us).

Discord emotes unfortunately will not be visible in this format, so they have been removed. Feel free to picture a bunch of animated, weird, colorful, somewhat derpy blobs and smileys and :kek: all over the place.

GM from Orbgasm

ORB
: what's up! what are you working on?

CFW
: lol, sup! at this exact moment, working on a 1/1 for the collection.

ORB
: oh shiiiii-

this has been a wild ride. let’s get into this interview bsns. where did it start for you with the Stacyverse?

CFW
: it really has, and I feel like I haven't stopped to really take in how far we've come with the Stacyverse. I was asked this question earlier as well, because I think people see a very cohesive narrative over the past few collections but truth be told it's been a brick by brick kinda of a thing where I just began doing my thing with the pills, and then more people came, more artist collaborations were made, a team was built, and we gave life to the entire collection through stories that brought together all the parts into what we now call the 'Stacyverse'

Ginseng Matte

ORB
: it really is kind of crazy-feeling when we realize how deep in our art we get sometimes. i think one of the coolest things about art is when you are enjoying the process of creating, and not just looking at the final product. do you often find yourself immersed fully in Cinema4D and losing track of time? i imagine you also run into complications you have to troubleshoot, which is part of the process. what do the good bursts of creative flow look like for you? what do the frustrating ones look like?

CFW
: such a good question. yes, I think this past year has been really an eye opener for me, because NFTs made me think about art more seriously. I've been using these 'professional' tools for my motion design job and making 'art,' but it's only after NFTs and making new friends in the commune that I truly understand that definition of art, and the beauty that lies in it.

and yes, when it comes to creating, most of the time I’m fully immersed in what I do, and I think it's crucial to bring to fruition anything you've set out to do, or else you will not be able to see it finished, or not in the form you envisioned it to be. my hack to not having 'frustrating' creative work flow is put a break on working itself. deliberately taking time off is a way I make sure the times I do work are a good experience for me & what I make.

also, snek pek!

SNEAKY RARE WIP PEEKS !@#

(still a wip though, I wanted something more joyous when compared to the other eerie parts of the project)

ORB
: holy shit.

this uplifting (and rare) ultra-positive Pillhead you are working on echoes this sentiment so much; escaping frustration not just by taking a break, but also being able to create with a focus on beauty and positivity. working with you, i have come to realize that at your core ethos and methodology , you are constantly working to bring a message of positivity with your work. where does this come from? is it partially a cultural thing? is there an experience you can pinpoint in your life that solidified this as a core part of your paradigm as an artist?

(lol, casual just got heavy. i suck at light interviews lol)

CFW
: huh, you're making me spill stuff. haha!

I don't think it's a cultural thing. rather, I think it stems from my personal growth as a human first before anything else. we all grow up in a very institutionalized environment, in the assumption that everything we see around us is safe, non-destructive. but I spent my early 20s traveling across my country, India; and the more I saw, the more unhappy the world seemed. not everyone is born with a silver spoon and life gets tough. I lost my dad to cancer, and some of my friends to depression. the world can get ugly real quick. but if there's anything that I can do to make it a little better, I think it's my attempt to create art that shares a positive message. I've always said this - the pill is in everything I do, and it isn't really about narcotics, but rather the idea that it provides a sense of feeling safe through chemically induced spaces you can go to. I think I still have a long way to go to truly spread happiness through my art.

(yep, it got dark)

Hello I am actually CFW

ORB
: this is intense, and beautiful. thank you for sharing that personal piece.

i am no stranger to death, and i think it makes for the strongest impressions that drive folks to do better in their lifetimes. it's a long road that sometimes seems short. our vision [article linked here] shows what a long way we have to go though! are you excited to start working with mediums outside of 3D for this project? will this be like leaving a comfort zone for you?

https://mirror.xyz/pillheads.eth/IZsahGgxbj-myq1-w-XiTnefAMybyLewT9L0LQoKsWE

CFW
: of course!

I really want to spend the next couple of months, maybe years trying to see where we can take this shared effort of 'Pillheads' because when I started Stacy Pills, it started with me, but Pillheads isn't just me: it is the result is a beautiful collaboration between 5 brilliant minds, and soon a community of thousands! I think there's a real potential to turn this brand into a household name.

ORB
: i'm so excited and terrified at the same time, realizing what we've been creating. it comes back to sometimes having to raise our head up and look at where we are in this sea of insanity we have worked ourselves into. sounds like drowning, but really i think this is called feeling truly alive. to quote Louis Carroll, "we're all crazy here." it means so much to be able to share these quick but deep insights into your mind CFW. is there a message you would like to leave folks reading this with?

CFW
: hmm....

WGMI?

lol nah...

NFTs are dead?

jokes aside, what we're building is a slow & delicate process. as a holder, you witness first hand, a beautiful community in the making that doesn't stem from 'profits' but from Art. we truly want to attract people that think like us, to help create a space that feels like home. we know all of us at the end of the day are here to make money, but the way we make it, and our intentions in the space will truly determine what web3 looks like years from now.

take the pill & let's see where this trip takes us!

vibin' with unkfunk

Hope you all enjoyed this short but sweet interview. We spent a lot of time re-arranging some stuff, eliminating some things, and adding a few newer and better features to ensure a safe and smooth community experience. In addition to our ~500 previous community members, an additional 1.5K folks showed up over the course of the week. I can say we were prepared, because we were. But I would be lying if I said we were ready mentally, because that was a really intense week of welcoming you all. The hype is real.

The first 1,000 folks on the server got
OG roles
. That’s a wrap for that; no more OG roles. Thank you to everybody that jumped in. It’s worth noting that our bot that tracks server member counts updates every few minutes, and it was lagging behind the influx of folks in the first 24 hours. So when it said 750, we were in fact over 1K already. We’re still on web2 with most of the technology we’re using, and this was a stark reminder. Now we know. Apologies to anybody that experienced any confusion or doubts over what we were doing at that time.

If you’re not already on our Discord server, please hop on here:

https://discord.gg/pillheads

Happy_List

After OG roles were issued,
Happylisting
began.

That’s right, Happylist; not Whitelist. WL is a problematic term, both semantically, and circumstantially. Part of innovation is moving on from past redundancies, so we were very conscious as a team, in our decision to move on from that term. Besides, everyone is literally happy when they get Happylisted.

Wen HL? Welp, if you haven’t already been HL’d through one of our curated brand partnerships, or simply by engaging with folks in a meaningful way on Discord, there are plenty of opportunities lurking about. Make sure you stay tuned to our Twitter, and Announcements channel.

Minting Mechanics

Concurrent to HL starting, we announced our
Minting Guide
, which includes how our HL and presale raffle methods work. Please be sure to check it all out in the article linked below if you haven’t already! Worthy of note, we decided to use premint.xyz as a wallet collection interface, simply because it is a solid industry standard, and we wanted to ensure that, just like these mirror articles, we are staying true with the decentralized model of data collection and dissemination.

https://mirror.xyz/pillheads.eth/nrLfhxufyPaHVcI8DoA3fE1FiEP0Aw0YPMgM2ghSEj4

Website Launch

Following all of this, and right on schedule, we released our brand spanking new website. We really wanted to present something fresh, and different. From the site’s layout to its design elements, we wanted to ensure that our branding is loud and clear, while being unintrusive and welcoming. We hope that you like it, and find it to be a pleasant web2 experience when looking at it. Check it out below if you haven’t already!

https://pillheads.art

Community

Our community has always been really tight at Pillheads. Even between collections, 1/1 drops, and NFTs, we have always been advocates for healthy discussion, creative new ideas, and input from our holders and non-holders alike. With this new collection we got to explore both traditional and new ideas!

One of the new things we got into that we are very jazzed about, is
Pillheads Radio
. With our Community Lead UNKFUNK at the wheel, some sessions were recorded that got formatted into some really fun sound-bytes for everybody to tune into. These little radio snippets fuse the fiction & lore of the Stacyverse as created by ORBGASM, and the actual happenings in our community across Discord and web3. If you want to hear the latest, you can find it randomly looping in Discord Stages throughout the week. If you’re impatient, you can always tag a team member and ask for a replay!

In addition to this, we started having weekly Twitter Spaces again. It’s been great to connect with our partners and advisors, as well as developers and past CFW collaboration artists on there. Keep an eye out for the next ones, as they will only get more interesting as we near minting dates.

One of the most fun things that happened, was an Airdrop. For those of you that are new around these parts, gifting is one of our favorite traditions here in the Stacy community. This time around, we sent everybody that had arrived and submitted their wallet addresses thus far, a gift. 1.8K of our community members received an NFT made by CFW. This is the first of many since we launched Pillheads Generative. You can check it out on Opensea.

ethereum://0xde34a8c62a94c133af06d7010ed2703df83637ee/1

Twitter

ethereum://0xde34a8c62a94c133af06d7010ed2703df83637ee/1

https://twitter.com/pillheads_NFT

What’s Next?

There are so many things that are about to happen before mint! Especially with multidisciplinary artists, it was always pretty clear to me that we were building something special. And in many cases, it was true; I made life-long friendships and learned so much.

But then NFTs happened, and I stumbled into what appeared to be a madhouse on wheels, traveling 200 kph into the future, with no clear strategies or ideas as to what that future was. I embraced chaos and found myself in the middle of a shitstorm of mindless shilling, intensely beautiful art, and completely alien ideas about what utility, scarcity, and branding meant.

Orbgasm

At some point along the way, I quit my real-world job and embraced web3 in its entirety. I found myself amidst a network of creators, curators, and collectors that put their money where their words were, and spoke clearly with their actions. It quickly became very clear who was genuine, and who was not. Integrity shines incredibly bright in a sea of toxic behavior and dishonesty.

And here I was again, with a grip on what it means to be a part of a creative community. The baseline had not changed, but there were suddenly so many different facets to what it meant; it was not just a creative community, but a new creative economy.

unkfunk

As the number of scams and rugs increased, my circle of peers tightened, and I found myself not just creating art, but building projects. Our team at Stacyverse//Pillheads feels like the apex of this path I have been on. We have a philosophy that was present before we got here; we did not build a mode of thought, but rather found ourselves here because of our commonalities in the way we live our lives.

We are a group of like-minded individuals that share a creative vision. We are here to nurture an identity built on integrity and respect. Our commonalities are difficult to number, but it may be possible to categorize them a little.

Our team is artist-driven. By putting art before money, we are able to prioritize quality and protect the brand’s integrity. Being a collective of artists first and foremost, we are unrestricted in exploring different aesthetics and concepts and can avoid being held back by business-minded thinking.

Potadough

Our team is culturally diverse. We span multiple timezones from the USA to India, to Australia. Organizing meetings that fall on a reasonable time of day/night for everybody can be a challenge. Our ability to present different cultural mindsets and find different ways to communicate our vision and brand makes up for this inconvenience.

Our team is professionally diverse. We all come from very different backgrounds IRL. We are a mix of artists that have backgrounds in a variety of art mediums and have a wide array of experience with event production, marketing, production logistics, and even web & software development. This assemblage of skills allows us to explore multiple avenues for the brand, ranging from digital presentations to physical assets. These are crucial tenets of what it means to build on web3.

Our team is freaking ridiculous. We are obsessed with having a good time. Laughter envelops all ends of the spectrum of our work; we are here to have a good time. When things get stressful, we discuss them in-depth and do not shy away from resolving any problems we may be encountering. Our mentality is solution-driven, simply because we want to have a good time doing what we’re doing. Besides, conflicts are just opportunities to learn from and grow stronger through.

boot

Our team cares about long-term connections. We’re not here to meet strangers at a rave and never see them again. We’re here to connect with people and share this world we are creating because we believe it can be life-changing. Our community thus far has repeatedly reinstalled our belief that integrity matters in web3. Through our artists and collectors, we have connected with individuals who connect genuinely, stay engaged during market lulls, and provide honest feedback. We want to build and grow alongside our community, with their input and direction. Our party doesn’t stop.

We believe in decentralization. This is not just another product or brand. We are here because we believe in a future where decisions are made by better informed, and diverse interests in society. We spend a lot of time thinking about what best serves the expressed interests of our community, before making any decisions about what we are building. We want to build and innovate with the blockchain. We are incubating ideas for the future of web3 and beyond.

CFW

We are not a group of automatons with corporate interests or backgrounds driving our intentions and goals. When the focus is on art, the language of the project becomes centered around creativity, and subsequently how good it feels when those experiencing the art have a positive engagement with it. We love a good dopamine rush, just like anyone else; but it’s so much better when we get to share it with others.

In the metaverse, everything moves differently. Time is compressed. Value is often ephemeral. The utility is often an unclear notion. We are fully immersed in this ecosystem, and we too are moving differently. We are not here to bring a multi-K project that works the same way others do. We are here as an identity that stands for creativity and integrity, facing a future full of potential. We are offering you a metaphorical pill that embarks you on a tangibly life-changing journey.

Here in the Stacyverse, we are constantly engaged with the NFT ecosystem. It is important to keep up with what’s new, what works, and what is absolutely useless in this fast-moving environment. To ensure the best possible minting experience for our community, we are dedicated to providing a fair and equitable approach. Part of this process is to be as transparent as we can possibly be about how we are doing things here.

We are not here to re-invent the wheel, though we are all about moving away from existing pitfalls and historically problematic approaches. It is important to innovate, and that oftentimes means repurposing existing technologies and methodologies. Following is our multi-step approach to minting your Pillhead NFTs this June.

All dates for minting will be shared in late May. We are actively watching market conditions, and ensuring we provide the most beneficial timelines for our community.

Minting Mechanics

To mitigate any stressful situations during the minting process, we have split up minting into multiple tiers:
Happy List
&
Public Raffle
. Our total supply across all sales will be 6,655 Pillhead NFTs.

Happylist

Our
Happylist
is the equivalent of what is traditionally called a ‘White List’ in the NFT space. Now discover your identity in the Stacyverse. On the journey of what it means to be YOU in the metaverse, we are taking a dive into the Stacyverse with a collection of
6,655 Pillheads
. Generated and minted onto the Ethereum blockchain straight from CFW’s mind, we are continuing explorations of detailed art and positive messaging that define our brand. This next step explores what it means to become lucid during the trip itself.

Building as a team committed to championing identity and reputation in the space, we are a mix of creative souls from around the world. From East to West, and in both hemispheres, we are working together to bring you an NFT project that operates on integrity, quality, and love.

The Roadmap

Here are just some of the ambitions that we have as a team. We are confident that they can be achieved. These are not endpoints; they are the beginning. We have barely scratched the surface of what web3 truly means in this constantly evolving ecosystem. We are here to stay and build alongside other communities while offering the highest quality experience to our community.

*“From the genesis block which carries my art, the community that it brought together felt more like a family. A collective of caring members from very different parts of the world, like our very own human blockchain; unanimous in thought, with the same goals and dreams for a web3 powered safe haven. All through the power of art.”*

ART:
This community’s primary goal will always be to empower artists first and act as a safe space to talk, explore and learn from one another. From collaborating with fellow artists and communities to bringing unique opportunities for people from the collective, we strive to serve as a launchpad for creativity.

VOICE:
Everyone has a unique story. We hope to set the stage for those who need to be heard - especially for builders who have achieved great things in the world, and our own gems in the community. By using Discord Stages and Twitter Spaces on a regular basis we will get to hear and share exciting stories of web3.

FRIENDSHIP:
We wish to partner up with projects and brands that we love, which respect and value our vision and have additional perks to offer our community members.

[Stacyverse]

AIRDROPS:
It’s good to be reminded that you’re loved. But web3 is a congregation of creatives. The holders are more important than the creators. We aim to work together to redefine what it means to be a strong tribe in this challenging world of web3 - together.

<pre data-type="codeBlock" text="Note: Subject to change.
