https://mirror.xyz/madeinpt.eth/I5tjF3sn6ugnUw3nBnKOpOUr2DEh_g6cTN-0hivKCgc

Construction began in the 14th century as part of a Franciscan convent. It is notable for its 18th-century baroque gilded carving set. Attached to its front entrance is the Church of the Venerable Third Order of San Francisco.

History

The Franciscan friars settled in Porto at the beginning of the 13th century, and in 1233 they were assigned land for the construction of their Church. Disputes with the bishop of Porto regarding the limits of the couto and resistance from the installed religious authorities meant that during the 14th century the works were successively postponed. The divergence forced the intervention in 1244 of Pope Innocent V, who through the Bulla Doelentis accepimus confirms the possession of the land to the Franciscan order. Then began the construction of the foundations of the annexed convent and of a primitive church, more modest and with a single nave.

In 1383 work began on the current church, driven by the decree of D. Fernando, special protector of the Franciscans. Construction was completed in 1410. The new church represented a significant expansion of the previous space, now with three naves in five bays, a projecting transept and a tripartite apse supported by buttresses.

The planimetric model adopted is similar to that already tested in numerous Portuguese temples from the Mendicant Gothic of the 12th century onwards. An important regional characteristic is the presence of lacrimal motifs decorated with spheres in the upper part of the chancel, of Galician influence. The structure of the church has not undergone significant changes, being the best example of Gothic architecture in Porto.

During the reign of D. João I, a mural was created referring to Senhora da Rosa, attributed to António Florentim, one of the oldest intact murals in the country.

During the 15th and 16th centuries, several prominent Porto families became patrons of the Franciscans, financing several of the side chapels. One of the notable examples is the chapel of São João Baptista, built in the 1530s for the Carneiro family, and designed by João de Castilho with Manueline motifs.

The main artistic campaign was carried out in the first half of the 18th century, when most of the interior surfaces, including walls, columns, side chapels and roof, were covered with Baroque gilded carving.

In 1833, the convent facilities attached to the church were destroyed by fire. The fire originated in a shootout by Miguelista troops at the end of the siege of Porto. After the fire, the ruined cloister was razed for the construction of the Bolsa Comercial do Porto, a notable example of neoclassical architecture from the 19th century. With the extinction of the religious orders in 1834, the Church served as the Customs warehouse until 1839.

In 1910 it was classified as a National Monument.

Architecture and Art

Outside

The main façade of the church contains a Gothic rose window, richly elaborated and decorated. It is the only surviving original decoration, the portal being a Baroque work organized on two levels, where a statue of Saint Francis of Assisi is supported by Solomonic columns.

The south portal, facing the river, is a Gothic piece. It is prominent in relation to the façade and has a gable decorated with a pentagram. The opening is made up of a series of archivolts decorated with high reliefs of Mudejar influence.

The church has three naves with five bays, the main nave being larger than the sides. The east side has a transept and an apse with three chapels. The transept is illuminated through the monumental windows in the arms of the transept and chancel, as well as by a small rose window over the chancel with tracery in the shape of a pentagram.

Interior

Altarpieces

Interior view, where the altarpieces, columns and covering of the vaults in gilded carving are visible.

Throughout the 17th century, several altarpieces were built. In 1595, the altarpiece of São Brás was executed by Manuel da Ponte. Between 1612 and 1615, the altarpiece of the chapel of Nossa Senhora dos Anjos was executed by Francisco Moreira, painted and gilded by the painter Inácio Ferraz de Figueiredo. In 1680, the gilding of the altarpiece of the confraternity of São Brás and São José was carried out by Manuel Ferreira.

At the beginning of the 18th century, the entire interior underwent a profound remodeling through the construction of the main gilded altarpieces, which characterize the interior that can be seen today. Most of these interventions replaced altarpieces from previous centuries.

The altarpiece in the Chapel of Nossa Senhora da Conceição was completely reformulated between 1718 and 1721 based on a pre-existing one. It is a work by Filipe da Silva and António Gomes and dedicated to the Tree of Jesse. It constitutes the most exuberant example of this theme in Portugal, also featuring interventions by the sculptor Manuel Carneiro Adão.

In 1724, the altarpiece for the Chapel of Santo António was created by the carver Luís Pereira da Costa. Between 1740 and 1744, the altarpieces of Nossa Senhora do Socorro and Nossa Senhora da Rosa were made, carved by Manuel da Costa Andrade according to a design by Francisco do Couto e Azevedo. Between 1750 and 1751, the altarpieces of the Annunciation of Our Lady, Our Lady of the Incarnation and the Holy Martyrs of Morocco were made by Manuel Pereira da Costa Noronha. Between 1764 and 1765, the retable of Nossa Senhora da Soledade was made by the carver Francisco Pereira Campanhã.

Full list of Geochaching below:

https://mirror.xyz/madeinpt.eth/I5tjF3sn6ugnUw3nBnKOpOUr2DEh_g6cTN-0hivKCgc

Pormenor do tímpano

Museu Arqueológico do Carmo

- 1500 a.C.).

Therefore, the rector of the Church has time limited and needs to run. Those who come across that sacristy for the first time are so enraptured that they just want to stop and contemplate every detail: the Church's Italian marble, the richly painted ceiling, the brazilwood furniture, Italy in Lisbon.

Confession is open every day of the week from 9:30 am to 12:30 pm and from 4:00 pm to 7:30 pm. Lost in time is the role of meeting point for the Italian community in Lisbon, despite the fact that it has not stopped growing in the city, now surpassing the French and Spanish.

Even so, some Italians still show up on Sundays at 11:30 am to hear mass in their mother tongue. And even today, the main position of Loreto, that of Rector, belongs to an Italian, because there are rules that have been in place since 1518, when Italian merchants, seduced by the wealth of trade in the Portuguese capital, got together to found a Church of the « Italian Nation», directly dependent on Rome.

It is clear that the Portuguese Church, jealous of its taxes and power, never looked favorably on the status of Loreto. However, this was the time of D. Manuel I, of elephant races through the streets of Lisbon, of cinnamon-scented gold, of embassies with rhinos heading to the Holy See, all of which was softened by the good relations between Venturoso and the Pope – and for the money of the Portuguese crown.

<img src="https://storage.googleapis.com/papyrus_images/3a87d0c2d22c3ce2bfcac46fff6b161781191c1428ad59de0f974d7e1cb92762.jpg" alt="Historian Nunziatella Alessandrini, a researcher at CHAM – Centro de Humanidades, at Universidade Nova de Lisboa, who arrived in Portugal in 1995, found half a millennium of untold Italian history in the Church of Loreto archives. Unlike her compatriots, seduced by Lisbon's commerce, what attracted her to the city in 1995 was her love for a Portuguese man. He got married, divorced and fell in love all over again when he discovered this piece of home more than two thousand kilometers away, which, by land, separate Lisbon from Italy.

As a young girl, Nunziatella studied Literature and the German Language, but love led her to discover the language of Camões and the books of Nuno Bragança. He got lost in the Loreto Archive and found half a millennium of untold Italian history. The research he develops at CHAM earned him the high decoration of “Ufficiale dell’Ordine della Stella d’Italia”, awarded by the President of the Italian Republic in 2022.

Nunziatella Alessandrini is one of more than 30,000 Italians living in Portugal, according to the 2021 SEF Immigration Report. Italians are already the fourth most popular nationality in the country and the first in the European Union. This was not the case when Nunziatella arrived in 1995. “We were around 2,500 Italians”, he recalls.

For the researcher, there is a reason for this wave: “the perks that the Portuguese government gives to Italian pensioners”. “In Italy, they pay very high rates, but here they have a complete retirement, a benefit that lasts for ten years.”

It is not new, however, that Lisbon is, in Italian eyes, a goose that lays golden eggs.

It was also in search of profit that the first Italians arrived in the city, still in the Middle Ages, a demand that increased with the “Atlantic expansion” and the elevation of the port of Lisbon to one of the nerve centers of the Old Continent.

Thus, the “head of the kingdom” was filled with mainly Florentine and Genoese merchants. The richest had “commercial houses” and some even managed to reach the Portuguese nobility through marriage.

The Church of Encarnação itself, in Chiado, right across from Loreto, was founded by the Countess of Pontével, of Italian descent. Nunziatella jokes: “Chiado was Italian”.

With 500 years of history, the Church of Nossa Senhora do Loreto was for centuries a meeting point for the Italian community in Lisbon and also for locals, given its location in the heart of Chiado. They are Italian families, some of whom still have descendants in Portugal, rich, linked to the purchase of the land that serves as the home of the Church of Loreto. In 1518, there was a “bush zone” and Italian work boosted the urban development of what is now the heart of Lisbon.

That whole area belonged to the city limits, surrounded by the great wall from the time of King Fernando I. Through the dimly lit corridor that connects the sacristy to the central nave, the wall takes on a different texture and color: “It's part of the Fernandina Wall. It is right inside the Church”, says the historian. “For me, it is something surprising. The Church is even built next to the wall.”

<img src="https://storage.googleapis.com/papyrus_images/5dd7bc0804408c58fa99de2387b96f7249f007069fb981e5810e6daa437bb34e.jpg" alt="The Church of Nossa Senhora do Loreto dos Italianos was built right next to the Fernandina Wall. Thousands of documents are kept there, which bear witness to half a millennium of the Italian presence in Lisbon. The Rois de Confessados, books that register the Italians who confessed before Easter and where they lived, make it possible to trace a geography of the community in the city.

It wasn't just merchants who made it up. There were equally booksellers or printers – and much more. The Encarnação area, Rua Nova de Almada, Rua do Alecrim and the Praça de Camões area were veritable conclaves of Italians. They had shops selling books, fabrics, precious stones and even “umbrellas made from whale bones”.

Italian money ensured that Loreto was one of the richest churches in Lisbon and that it could be rebuilt, after fires and the 1755 earthquake. To maintain it, each Italian in Lisbon paid “a quarter of a ducat for every hundred he earned”, explains the CHAM researcher.

<img src="https://storage.googleapis.com/papyrus_images/e50d99bcbcaff57b6f4a57348e86c1e5b1e68cd099d479e61445ff18ba0029e8.jpg" alt="The thousands of documents in the Loreto Church Archive allow us to state that its creation had religious reasons, as well as secular ones: to be the meeting point for Italian businessmen based in Lisbon. They were businessmen and they wanted a place to get together and do business.”

Even so, they dedicated it to the Virgin of Loreto, a frequent cult in Italy, but uncommon in sixteenth-century Portugal, although it later spread to other parts of the country.

Even today in Alcafozes, in the municipality of Idanha-a-Nova, at the end of August, there are festivities dedicated to Nossa Senhora do Loreto, with the presence of the Portuguese Air Force. After all, this is the patroness of aviation.

On the ceiling of the Church of Loreto, in the heart of Chiado, a bit of the story of the Virgin of Loreto is told, represented above a house. Before the Muslim invasion of the Holy Land at the end of the 13th century, the house where Mary lived disappeared. It is believed that the three-walled house (because it was built next to a cave) was taken by the air, by angels, to the Italian city of Loreto, for its protection. Even today, the Italian village is a place of pilgrimage and veneration.

<img src="https://storage.googleapis.com/papyrus_images/d960a81764cf5e763e189566aa71f43fea3e6a3a367d647645d95c010d39311e.jpg" alt="On the ceiling of the Church of Loreto, a bit of the story of the Virgin of Loreto is told, to which the church was dedicated. A frequent cult in Italy, but not very common in 16th century Portugal. Photo: Inês Leote.

“The idea of an Italian Nation is born outside of Italy” and Lisbon is one of the cradles

The most surprising of all, for the historian, is that the foundation of the Church of Loreto was intended for the “Italian Nation”, as one reads in the documentation. In fact, it will be necessary to wait more than 300 years, until 1861, for Italy to be born as a country and united political identity.

In sixteenth-century Europe, the Italian Peninsula was a mosaic of states and dialects, a land of rivalries and palace intrigues, of disunity and competition. They were principalities, duchies, such as that of Milan or Savoy, the Florence of the Medici, the Republic of Venice, kingdoms such as that of Naples and the interests and domains of Francis I of France and Charles V.

It is therefore a “historical error” to speak in Italians until 1861, says historian Nunziatella Alessandrini. “In July, the Lisbon Studies Office, to commemorate the 500th anniversary of the death of King Manuel I, asked me to speak about the king's relationship with Italy. To do so, it is necessary to separate relations with Florence, Genoa, Venice, Milan, in short.”

<img src="https://storage.googleapis.com/papyrus_images/309e5d8c24384a0ca5c9bc9c2196d368df6f286bf74ac8d4dc2dd6eb9d845271.jpg" alt="For the historian Nunziatella Alessandrini, it was fascinating to discover that in Lisbon in the 1500s there is a united Italian identity that did not exist at the time in the “Motherland”. Photo: Inês Leote

But in 1518, in Lisbon, differences gave way to unity, which for the historian is fascinating: “The Italian Nation was born outside of Italy. It is the first time that I find this expression in the documents and it shows the union that did not exist in the Motherland”.

The appearance of the walls in the room where the historian works expresses the neglect to which the Church of Loreto has been condemned in recent years. Far from being the “unifying hub” of the Italian community, which it once was, many Italians are unaware of this piece of Italy in Portugal, says Nunziatella Alessandrini.

<img src="https://storage.googleapis.com/papyrus_images/279ef7e35b7af35d43355b5da85382d74beb34f872511bb5854b8c065fa07db6.jpg" alt="Church of Loreto, on the corner of Rua da Misericórdia and Largo do Chiado. Photo: Lisbon Municipal Archive.

Still, Father Francesco Temporin notes that more Italians attend Sunday mass, the only one in Italian, throughout the week. But the Church itself, not being a parish, does not have catechesis, which would create a greater sense of community. “It is a Church of confessions”, explains Nunziatella.

The historian recalls that “today interests are different” and religion is in crisis: “The young people I talk to are not very interested, but it may be that one day Loreto will return to being the center of the Italian community”.

In Message, the Embassy of Italy in Portugal explained that this community in Lisbon is mainly made up of “retired people”, who arrive “in large numbers” to “benefit from tax benefits” and the “quality of life in the country”. Young Italians in Lisbon are mainly “digital nomads, entrepreneurs and students” looking for an international experience with an expiration date.

A piece of Italy in Portugal waiting for a Museum

Despite this, it is the Italians in Lisbon who continue to maintain the Church of Loreto, as has been the case since the 16th century. And if Italy is the land of Emperors, here the Board is in charge, an assembly of important members of the Italian community in Lisbon, which discusses budgets and programming.

It includes the Rector, Father Francesco Temporin, the Provedor, Giuseppe Nigra, descendant of Italians and Ambassador of the Order of Malta in Portugal, and three Italian professors, including the historian Nunziatella Alessandrini, who is joined by a representative of the Italian Embassy.

This is because Loreto is a piece of Italy in Portugal, dependent on the Embassy, and, in this half millennium of History, the Italians have left an immense legacy, which Nunziatella cannot organize alone. “In the archive there are many pearls. Missing a Museum. Let’s see if we can propose a project to Santa Casa da Misericórdia.”

The creation of a museum that allows organizing and exhibiting the collection of sacred art and historical documents of the Church of Loreto is one of the ambitions of the Board responsible for the Church. No matter how hard you try, it's in the corners that there are paintings, some already restored, of the king of Savoy, of an 18th-century Piedmontese benefactor, and in the back, already on the wall, a great work of Our Lady of Guadalupe.

“It's a shame people don't see this”, says Nunziatella, stopping to tell a story that illustrates the lack of knowledge about the Italian presence in Lisbon.

“In 2019, the City Museum organized the exhibition ‘Lisboa Plural’, about foreign communities in the city. They asked me how big the Italian track was”, he says, pausing and smiling.

Full list of Geochaching below:

https://mirror.xyz/madeinpt.eth/I5tjF3sn6ugnUw3nBnKOpOUr2DEh_g6cTN-0hivKCgc

Luciano Guerra (as duas últimas).

Terceira parte do Segredo arquivada no Vaticano

https://mirror.xyz/madeinpt.eth/I5tjF3sn6ugnUw3nBnKOpOUr2DEh_g6cTN-0hivKCgc
