Why green assets belong onchain

Tokenization is no longer a fringe experiment. Real-world assets are moving onchain at an accelerating pace, from treasury bonds to real estate to commodities. Green assets are not only part of this trend; they are among the asset classes that stand to benefit the most from it.

The reason is straightforward. Environmental claims demand a level of transparency and traceability that traditional registries struggle to provide. Carbon credits have been plagued by double-counting scandals. Biodiversity offsets lack standardized verification. Renewable energy certificates circulate through opaque, fragmented markets. Blockchain infrastructure, with its immutable records, composable standards, and permissionless auditability, directly addresses these failures.

When a carbon credit is minted onchain, its provenance is permanently legible. When a biodiversity token references a specific bioregion and a peer-reviewed methodology, anyone can verify the claim. When renewable energy is tracked through onchain certificates, the audit trail is native to the asset itself. This is not a theoretical improvement. It is the infrastructure that regulators, institutional buyers, and impact investors increasingly require.

Why we chose the map, and still stand by it

From the beginning, Regen Atlas chose the map as its primary interface. That decision was deliberate, and we remain fully aligned with it.

Green assets are inherently place-based. A mangrove restoration project in Sindhudurg, India is not interchangeable with a reforestation initiative in the Colorado Plateau. The ecological context (soil type, watershed dynamics, biodiversity baselines, climate exposure) shapes both the value and the credibility of the asset. Any serious indexing of the green economy must reflect this geographic specificity.

By anchoring every asset to a bioregion, Regen Atlas enables something that flat registries and spreadsheet-style databases cannot: spatial aggregation. Users should be able to filter by region, country, ecosystem service, or asset type. They can compare the regenerative activity in the Amazon Basin against the East African Rift. They can identify concentration risks, coverage gaps, and emerging hotspots of onchain environmental action.

We believe this capacity for geographic aggregation will unlock indexation, and with it, liquidity. Once green assets can be grouped, compared, and benchmarked by location and type, the creation of second-order financial instruments becomes possible: regional indices, ecosystem-service derivatives, bioregion-weighted portfolios. These are the building blocks of a mature, investable green economy. The map is not a cosmetic choice. It is the architecture that makes composable green finance legible.

What we built for v2

The new interface at https://www.regenatlas.xyz/ represents a complete redesign, not just visually, but structurally. Here is what has changed.

A new landing page

The Atlas now opens with a dedicated landing page that communicates the mission upfront. Visitors see the scale of what has been indexed (500+ assets, 17 chains, 185 bioregions, 14 protocols) and can choose between exploring the map or listing their own project. The previous version dropped users directly into the map with minimal context. The new landing page provides orientation, explains the value proposition, and highlights the breadth of ecosystem services tracked, from carbon and biodiversity to water, soil, energy, and livelihoods.

185 bioregions

The most significant structural addition is the introduction of 185 bioregions as a first-class entity. Every asset is now mapped to a specific bioregion, a scientifically defined ecological boundary that transcends political borders. Bioregions like "Greater California," "Southeast Savannas & Riparian Forests," or "Colorado Plateau & Mountain Forests" provide an ecologically meaningful frame for understanding where regenerative activity is concentrated and where it is absent. Each bioregion page aggregates the assets, actions, and actors operating within it, making regional-level analysis native to the interface.

505 assets

The asset database has grown to 505 indexed green assets across multiple chains and protocols. These include carbon credits on Polygon, biodiversity tokens on Celo, renewable energy certificates on Base, and more. Each asset card now displays richer metadata: location, timeframe, associated actors, SDG outcomes, and links to onchain proofs. The filtering system has been expanded so users can now sort by asset type, chain, ecosystem service, issuer, or location.

224 actions

Regen Atlas now indexes 224 onchain actions: the transactions, claims, and interventions that constitute the operational layer of the green economy. Actions connect assets to the real-world activities that produced them. A tree-planting campaign in Kenya. A lake clean-up in Bangalore. A community-led mangrove restoration in coastal India. The actions layer adds temporal depth through a time filter, allowing users to track the evolution of regenerative activity over time.

27 actors, including AI agents

The Actors section now tracks 27 entities active in the onchain green economy, and this is where the most forward-looking change lives. Actors are no longer limited to organizations. The new interface introduces AI agents as a distinct actor type.

This is not a speculative feature. Autonomous agents are already participating in onchain green markets. As AI agents become capable of evaluating environmental claims, executing purchases of carbon credits, and allocating capital to regenerative projects, they will need the same structured, verifiable data layer that human actors use. Regen Atlas is being built to serve both.

A fully refactored UI

Beyond these feature additions, the entire user interface has been rebuilt from the ground up. Navigation is cleaner and more intuitive, with a unified top bar that lets users switch seamlessly between Assets, Actions, Actors, and Bioregions. The sidebar panels are more information-dense without feeling cluttered. The globe visualization has been refined for smoother interaction. The overall aesthetic has matured, from a prototype-grade tool to a professional-grade explorer of the onchain green economy.

Making the Atlas readable by agents

The most important evolution in Regen Atlas is not visible in the UI. It is architectural. We are making the Atlas agent-readable.

The onchain green economy is entering a phase where autonomous AI agents will be significant participants. These agents will need to discover green assets, evaluate their credibility, compare them across bioregions, and execute transactions, all programmatically. They will need structured, machine-readable access to the same data that human users browse through the map interface.

By introducing agents as actors within the Atlas and designing our data layer for programmatic access, we are positioning Regen Atlas as infrastructure that serves the next generation of participants in the green economy. Not just humans navigating a dashboard, but agents executing on verifiable environmental data. We believe this is where the onchain green economy is headed, and we intend to be ready.

EcoToken is a robust system designed for cross-chain environmental credit management and retirement. Its products include:

• ecoLedger: A record keeping system that tracks environmental assets listed, sold, or retired across blockchains. EcoLedger guarantees the integrity of transactions, preventing overselling and ensuring transparency for environmental assets throughout their entire lifecycle. The ledger is publicly viewable at scan.ecotoken.earth.

• ecoToken dApp: A platform and permissionless API consisting of a comprehensive set of tools to facilitate crosschain exchange of environmental assets, including:

  • Impact Certificates: unique non-fungible tokens representing verified environmental contributions, allowing users to track and showcase their positive impact. 

  • Integrated Impact Scoreboards, where users can monitor and compare their environmental impact performance against others.

So far, EcoToken offers credit retirement for 10 Regen Network projects spanning 7 blockchains (Solana, Eclipse, Celo, Base, Polygon, Aptos, Arbitrum, and Optimism).

EcoToken’s environmental credit retirement feature has been integrated into the Regen Atlas, enabling retirement with CELO—the native token of the Celo blockchain—directly through the Regen Atlas interface. Users can now support specific Regen Network projects by retiring their corresponding credits near instantly using a variety of stablecoin payment methods:

• cUSD: The Celo ecosystem’s most well-known stablecoin

• Glo Dollar: A stablecoin whose yield funds public goods.

• More common stablecoins such as USD Coin or Tether.

The process is simple—here’s how to make an impact:

1. Choose a Project: Browse through various Regen Network projects on the Atlas and select one to support. Each project comes with details like its location, goals, and credit cost.

2. Send Payment: Assuming the selected project supports credits retirement, users can spend CELO or a stablecoin for retirement. Users will see the price for one environmental credit, yet can retire any amount. For example, if a credit is priced at 25 cUSD, sending 12.5 cUSD would retire half a credit, while sending 50 cUSD would retire two.

3. Credit Retirement: Once the payment is confirmed, the EcoToken system retires the credits. All data, including transaction records and retirement status, is always available via EcoToken endpoints. It is also possible to check retirement details via EcoToken Scan. With the credit’s Retirement Hash/Settlement Hash available from both sources, credit retirement can also be verified on the Regen Network blockchain.

While at the time only retirement is possible, in the future, EcoToken’s environmental assets will be transferable, in line with Regen Atlas’ Listing Methodology.

OpenVino is a real-world asset (RWA) protocol offering organic wine tokens. These tokens represent bottles of organic wine corresponding to specific vintage years. OpenVino is deployed on Ethereum, and works as follows:

1. Organic Wine Tokenization: When the harvest is finished, OpenVino issues fungible ERC-20 tokens that represent the bottles produced from that year's yield. The quantity of tokens minted matches the total bottle production of that vintage. 

For example, one MTB18 token represents one MTB* "Mike Tango Bravo" wine bottle from the 2018 harvest.

2. Auction: Tokenized wine bottles are initially offered through a Vintage Coin Offering (VCO) for a set period of time at a fixed price set by the winery. 

For example, the period of time defined by Costaflores winery for the MTB* token was from 6th May to 25th July 2023. 

3. Wine Maturation and Redemption: After the conclusion of the VCO, the winery sets up a liquidity pool on OpenVino's decentralized exchange (DEX)–Viniswap–allowing consumers, importers, distributors, retailers, and speculators to freely trade wine tokens. The price of the token on the exchange adjusts dynamically in real-time: Each transaction (buying or selling) influences the token price, which follows the Uniswap bonding curve. As a result, the price of wine tokens is driven by supply and demand, allowing for the dynamic valuation of wine over time—just like the value of the wine itself increases as it ages. When the wine is ready for consumption, token holders can redeem their tokens for bottles of wine. During the redeem process, the buyer pays the shipping costs and their tokens are “burned”.

For instance, an MTB18 token represents a bottle of MTB* "Mike Tango Bravo" wine (which undergoes a three-year aging process in oak barrels, wine maturation and aging process depending on the type of wine) from the 2018 harvest and can be redeemed since 2021. Upon redemption, the holder pays for shipping, and the tokens are burned to remove them from circulation. 

4. Token Yield and Trading: Wine tokens can be redeemed for bottles of wine for a period of time defined by the winery. Unredeemed tokens can continue to be actively traded on Viniswap, boosting liquidity in this specialized market with limited assets. Although a wide range of real-world assets (RWA) are being tokenized, wine is unique in that its value evolves as it ages. Viniswap’s elastic pricing will help reflect this commodity market dynamic.

For instance, MTB tokens can be redeemed for bottles of wine for 10 years from launch date.

Regen Atlas now lists OpenVino’s wineries producing tokenized organic wine, starting with the Costaflores’ Organic Vineyard, a boutique winery in Argentina. Costaflores produces MTB* Mike Tango Bravo, red wine (blend), Malbec, Petit Verdot, and Cabernet Sauvignon.

Regen Atlas classifies OpenVino’s organic wine tokens as an Ownership token with the  Commodity subtype. 

Commodity ownership is the one of the most straightforward cases of ownership: by holding these RWA tokens, users possess the right to claim ownership over corresponding bottles of organic wine from specific vintages for a period of time defined by the winery. Unredeemed tokens can continue to be actively traded on Viniswap, boosting liquidity in this specialized market with limited assets.

The OpenVino’s organic wine tokens are classified with the Nativity of “Onchain Integration”, Model 3 from the RWA.xyz Tokenization Spectrum. This means assets are represented onchain but enforced offchain, with value exchanged both offchain and onchain.

While organic agriculture is crucial for sustainable development, the current system is flawed, as certifiers often lack the proper incentives to thoroughly verify producers' practices, leading to potential corruption and weakened standards.

In collaboration with Kleros, OpenVino has developed the BioDigital Certification, a self-certification system for wineries that utilizes open-source data to certify their product claims, such as: organic, biodynamic, provenance, carbon neutral, sustainability, etc. It combines camera images, IoT sensors (monitoring factors like temperature, wind speed, and soil moisture), and on-the-ground data from vineyard workers to capture essential ecological information onchain to map the certification requirements. 

The BioDigital Certification is grounded in principles aligned with international organic standards. All data is publicly available, enabling verification and challenges of claims made by wine producers via Kleros, an open-source dispute resolution protocol, fostering accountability in the wine industry.

In more details, the BioDigital Certification Process is as follows (note, at present, no disputes have been raised):

1. Claim Requirements: Wineries review specific certification requirements set for obtaining the BioDigital Certification (organic, biodynamic, provenance, carbon neutral, sustainability, etc).

2. Self-Certification Upload: Wineries complete and upload their responses to the requirements from their OpenVino account to justify their claim (documents, IoT sensors, images, accounting data, etc).

3. Challenge Mechanism: Note that challenger identities and evidence remain undisclosed during the challenge period to prevent manipulation.

   1. Staking/Challenge Setup: Wineries stake a bounty (e.g., 1 ETH) for 30 days, allowing challengers to present evidence.

   2. Challenger Participation: Any challengers who believe that the certification is fraudulent, can deposit funds into the bounty and upload their evidence of fraud. The Kleros jury decentralized court determines if the certification is valid, and returns the full bounty to the winery, or to the challenger.

4. Outcome:

   1. No Challenges: If no challenges arise within 30 days, the winery earns the certification badge and the bounty is returned.

   2. Win for Winery: If the jury favors the winery, the bounty returns to them, and 1/3 of the challenger’s stake is awarded to the winery, Kleros, and OpenVino.

   3. Win for Challenger: If the jury favors the challenger, the bounty goes to them, and the staking returns are distributed similarly. Note that if multiple challengers participate, the bounty is divided among winning challengers.

OpenVino provides wineries with the tools to create their own, open-source, wine-backed cryptoassets through tokenization. OpenVino offers consumers the opportunity to purchase, trade, and redeem tokens that represent specific organic vintages of wine. With OpenVino, wineries can self-certify their production as organic, carbon-neutral and other attributes through BioDigital Cert™. They also develop traceability solutions for wine products, "You Drink It You Own It"

The Regen Atlas partners with LandX to list real-world farms producing xTokens. 

LandX is a real-world asset (RWA) protocol offering xTokens. These unique tokens, when staked, provide exposure to the yields produced by RWA agro-commodities, such as rice, corn, soy, and wheat. Today, LandX is deployed on Ethereum and Arbitrum, and works as follows:

1. Farmers commit crop-share to the protocol to access upfront capital. Their commitment is secured by a lien on the underlying farmland. Note that the farmer has the flexibility to choose which commodity to reference for crop-share payments. For instance, even if the farmer is growing rice, they can opt for corn.

2. LandX validators onboard new farmers, assisting with legal and economic contracts.

3. Farmers receive xTokens equivalent to the crop-share agreed upon (i.e. if a farmer commits 1000kg of soybeans per year, they receive 1000 xSOY tokens). xTokens are fully backed, meaning that new tokens are not created unless additional crop-share is committed.

4. Commodity yield is distributed to xToken stakers as cTokens: a yield token that can be redeemed via the platform at the fair market value of 1kg of the underlying agro-commodity. For example, one staked xWHEAT token is redeemable for one cWHEAT annually at the market value of 1kg of wheat.

The Regen Atlas now lists the first LandX farm, located in Colombia. With this partnership, every new LandX farm will be displayed on the Atlas. 

The Regen Atlas classifies xTokens a Nonpossessory Rights token with the Output Rights subtype. This means that in return for staking or holding the token, the user receives access to revenues derived from its outputs without outright owning the crops or the farm itself. In this case, the outputs earned are revenues from agro-commodities produced by the farm.

xTokens are classified with the Nativity of Onchain Enforcement—Model 4 from the RWA.xyz Tokenization Spectrum. Crop-shares, as ERC-20 tokens, are “represented and enforced onchain… using both offchain and onchain means”. Furthermore, the legal and economic contracts committing crop-shares to mint xTokens are represented by an NFT.

Currently, only LandX’s xTokens are presented on our interface. They are First-order Assets: underlying place-based assets with spatial and ecological attributes.

With our upcoming Q3 release, the Regen Atlas will list and display cTokens, xBasket, and xUSD as Second-order Assets: assets that derive their value from first-order assets—in this case, xTokens. Note that cTokens and the xBasket are live today, but are yet to be included in the Atlas’ UI. The table below provides more information:

LandX, with their recent purchase and retirement of over 400 carbon tonnes, has joined Klima Infinity—an opt-in certification by KlimaDAO that helps organizations transparently uphold and broadcast their climate positive pledge. With it, users perpetually offset their carbon footprint, thus greening their products and processes.

Klima Infinity is one certification of many that will be displayed in the Atlas for each listed green asset, bringing transparency and clarity to a burgeoning green certification sector—stay tuned for our upcoming Q3 release.

LandX is the perpetual commodity vaults protocol providing real-world farmers access to capital and offering investors exposure to farmland crop share in the form of a liquid token.
