It’s the elephant in the room that no amount of bridges has fully solved.</em></p><p><strong>The Interoperability Dilemma</strong></p><p>When builders create on a specific chain, the scope of their audience is, by default, limited to that chain’s ecosystem. Example: Ethereum users stay within Ethereum. So do Polygon users, and so on. The result? A fragmented Web3 industry where assets are scattered across multiple blockchains, making the dream of a unified, decentralized web seem out of reach.</p><p>Interoperability is the dream of seamlessly interacting with multiple blockchains. But dreams often meet reality, and the Web3 world’s first attempt at interoperability came in the form of bridges.</p><p><strong>Bridges: A Flawed Solution</strong></p><p>At first glance, bridges solved interoperability by enabling users to transfer assets from one chain to another. But they’ve since proven themselves to be riddled with issues:</p><ol><li><p><strong>Security Nightmares</strong></p><ul><li><p><strong>Poly Network (August 2021):</strong> $612 million stolen through a vulnerability in the bridge’s access control.</p></li><li><p><strong>Nomad Bridge (August 2022):</strong> Hackers drained $200 million by exploiting a coding flaw.</p></li><li><p><strong>Harmony Horizon Bridge (2022):</strong> Millions lost between Harmony, Ethereum, and Binance Smart Chain.</p></li><li><p><strong>Wormhole Bridge (February 2022):</strong> $326 million gone, just like that.</p></li></ul></li></ol><p>The list goes on, highlighting how bridges are lucrative targets for bad actors.</p><ol><li><p><strong>User Experience Woes</strong></p></li></ol><p>Let’s imagine a simple scenario: you want to buy an NFT worth 100 USDT on Solana, but your assets are split across Ethereum and Polygon (50 USDT each). Here’s what happens:</p><ul><li><p><strong>Step 1:</strong> Bridge assets from Ethereum to Solana.</p></li><li><p><strong>Step 2:</strong> Bridge assets from Polygon to Solana.</p></li><li><p><strong>Step 3:</strong> Finally, buy the NFT on Solana.</p></li></ul><p>Three transactions, each incurring gas fees and bridging charges. While bridges technically solve the interoperability issue, they introduce new problems:</p><ol><li><p><strong>Time-Consuming:</strong> Bridging assets takes time.</p></li><li><p><strong>Liquidity Dependence</strong> Bridges rely on liquidity pools to function. No liquidity? No bridging.</p></li><li><p><strong>Unnecessary Complexity</strong> The process of using bridges introduces multiple layers of friction for users. Instead of making users jump through hoops to move between chains, instead of dealing with multiple wallets and bridges, users interact with a unified system.</p><p><strong>Here’s how it works:</strong></p><ul><li><p>One wallet, multiple chains: Chain abstraction aggregates balances from different blockchains into a unified view.</p></li><li><p>Seamless Interactions: Users can interact with any chain without manually bridging assets. Whether you hold tokens on Ethereum, Solana, or Polygon, your wallet acts as a universal access point.</p></li><li><p>Enhanced UX: By eliminating the need for bridging, chain abstraction significantly reduces gas fees, complexity, and the risk of hacks.</p></li></ul><p><strong>Some practical use cases of chain-abstractions are:</strong></p><ol><li><p><strong>DeFi (Decentralized Finance):</strong> Chain abstraction allows users to interact with any DeFi protocol without bridging assets manually.
