Since the 1960s, he has made a series of pioneering work on cosmology, using a self consistent, complete and accurate description of the evolution history of the universe from the earliest Big Bang to today. He linked microscopic particle physics with macroscopic cosmology. According to this “physical cosmological model”, the invisible dark matter, which currently accounts for 27% of the cosmic component, is a necessary factor in the evolution of the universe, and even promotes the evolution process of the universe.</p><p>Why can the Milky Way rotate at high speed?</p><p>In order to explain why the silver disk of the Milky way can rotate at such a high speed, we need to cover the Milky way with a huge dark matter halo. The dark matter contained in the middle provides gravitational potential energy for the rapidly rotating galaxies in the Milky way. If we observe the rotation of each star (including the solar system) around the center of the Milky way, we can calculate the distribution of dark matter.</p><p>We know today that the density of dark matter near the sun’s orbit is about 1 / 3 of the mass of protons per milliliter! The mass of the proton is 10 to the minus 27th power kilogram. The density of dark matter is 21 orders of magnitude lower than that of air, followed by 21 zeros!</p><p>You may ask, why does such thin dark matter, so many orders of magnitude lower than air, affect the evolution of the Milky way? The answer is this. Such thin dark matter certainly has no effect on the small scale, but when it gathers to a large scale larger than the Milky way, it can stick the Milky way together like an adhesive, and the universe can form what it is today.</p><p>Today, what we really want to understand is not the appearance of dark matter in astronomy and the universe, but what is dark matter? Just like everything we know, people, animals, bacteria and viruses keep dividing down. In the end, they will be divided into so-called basic particles, such as electrons and protons. Each electron is as like as two peas, although the proton is not the most basic, and there are quarks under the proton, but the upper quarks are always the same, and the lower quarks are always the same, that is, there is the smallest and indivisible unit.</p><p>“Portrait” dark matter</p><p>Similarly, the research on the essence of dark matter is to draw a portrait of the most inseparable basic particle of dark matter, and understand its mass, charge (which should be zero), spin and interaction intensity. This is what we want to do.</p><p>If there is a micro interaction between dark matter and ordinary matter in addition to gravitational interaction, such as the theory of weakly interacting heavy particles (wimp), which has been popular since the 1970s, the particles of dark matter can be studied more carefully in the laboratory.</p><p>Generally speaking, there are three main means in experiments. One is called direct collision; The second is to measure the products after they are “destroyed”; The third is to produce dark matter on a very high-energy accelerator, which we usually call direct detection, indirect detection and collider detection.</p><p>The main part today is about direct detection. The principle of direct detection still goes back to our image of the Milky way above, that is, the whole Milky way is surrounded by a halo of dark matter.</p><p>You can imagine the dark matter halo as a big “haze” around the Milky way, and the solar system is like a person riding a motorcycle. The motorcycle advances at a high speed relative to the “haze”, which is about one thousandth of the speed of light. In this way, the “haze” particles have great momentum towards motorcyclists. Therefore, for detectors on earth, dark matter particles carry momentum and energy, which can be measured by the recoil of ordinary matter after impact.</p><p>This simple principle is the idea put forward by Witten and Goodman in 1985 to find the signal that the nuclei of dark matter and ordinary matter are kicked out after they collide with each other. But if you find this very weak collision, how can you say that the signal is caused by dark matter? That’s what experimenters have to do. They’re not just waiting. They need to understand what kind of signal really comes from the collision between dark matter and ordinary matter!</p><p>Is dark matter easy to collide with ordinary matter? It must be hard, or I would have found it today! But why it is so difficult is more difficult to understand. How much dark matter passes through us every second? An order of magnitude estimate can be made. Because we know the density and speed of dark matter, so we can calculate that one billion dark matter passes through the human body every second. There are about 10 to 29 atoms in each person’s body, and there are as many nuclei. When these two numbers are multiplied together, dark matter should easily hit ordinary matter. But today we know that the number of such dark matter collisions with each person is less than once a year. This is not a theoretical inference, but an experimental result!</p><p>We don’t see dark matter because their interaction with ordinary matter is very, very weak! It is very difficult to find such a weak interaction.</p><p>Today, cosmic rays and gamma rays in the surface environment, between the body and the environment, collide one billion times a day, so these collisions are much more than the annual dark matter collision events. Therefore, we should find a way to hide the detector in an environment with low interference factors.</p><p>There is no clever way to remove cosmic ray interference. At present, the experiments of measuring dark matter are hidden underground, blocking the high-energy charged particles from the middle of the universe through the rocks on the surface of the earth. For the gamma rays in the environment, these rays exist everywhere, even in the very deep underground. We need to wrap the detector layer by layer and block the gamma rays with well-known lead and copper materials.</p><p>In the past decade, China has made rapid development in dark matter detection.
