Another big topic this week was the explosive launch of Friend.tech, a cryptocurrency centered social networking application that rocketed Coinbase’s Layer 2 protocol Base to the top of the charts in terms of transaction amounts and value. Coinweb has been making strides with the infrastructure behind the wallet, with version 1.0.13 launched just yesterday. We are nearing the alpha tester release, and getting closer with each day that passes.

Some notable hacks occured this week, with CoinsPaid leading the pack for $37M lost, as well as Conic Finance and zkSync’s Eralend also suffering exploits. Even as data security remains a primarily unsettled score between Web2 and Web3 proponents, Sam Altman’s high-profile launch of Worldcoin (WLD) saw an unwarranted level of hype and participation from the general public, whilst Web3 natives are quick to point out the “bad tokenomics” of the project — and opinion leaders such as myself warn that we only have one set of biometrics; once te data is out of your control, you cannot change or reset your credential.

Last but not least, we had the FOMC meeting raise rates by 25 basis points and no longer predicting an impending recession. FedNow moves forward, and a US Congressman proposes a bill to ban CBDCs. Meta released “Threads,” a head-to-head competitor to Twitter that converted over 100 million users in the first week from their wildly popular platform, Instagram. We are yet to see if they will be able to retain these users with any real innovation that might cause Social Media behavior to branch out. India released its first soft-landing moon mission, the “Chandrayaan 3” to the hopes and joys of what is now the world’s most populated country, becoming the 4th nation after the US, Russia, and China to attempt to do so.

Within the industry, Polygon proposed a switch from MATIC to POL for various reasons; Arkham Intelligence launched their “snitch-to-earn” airdrop campaign; and a fake LayerZero airdrop penetrated the security of a large amount of unsuspecting wallets. Axelar announced its partnership with Microsoft to develop hybrid blockchain solutions (read: public and private). The FTC ruled not to block the massive acquisition of Activision by Microsoft, leading to concerns of anti-trust for many of the blockbuster titles owned by the former. Worldcoin is shaking it up with a successful raise and over 2M signups for the WorldID program. Last week, we saw Bitcoin drop to 2-month lows amidst a small rally on the back of the CPI inflation print; as the US banking crisis continues to unfold, the national debt ceiling gets tickled and problems between the SEC and Congress, politicization of issues continue to poison the regulatory landscape of the world’s biggest economy. We are witnessing the exit of well-established crypto players en masse, the latest of which include Bittrex, Gemini, and the divestiture of Binance.US. Coinbase’s Brian Armstrong has been running around the world taking selfies with EU and Middle-eastern political leaders, sending a nice message to the incumbents in power. Outside of the US, the UK has roughly followed the same trajectory in raising interest rates, the EU’s MiCA continues to lead the way; France continues to riot, Erdogan getting chased out of office, and Pakistan’s former PM got thrown in the can and bailed out (similar to HRH Do Kwon, who was let out on bail at 400,000 EUR).

Most interestingly last week, significant events happened on both the Bitcoin and Ethereum networks – Ethereum failed to finalize blocks for two time periods within 24 hours, which devs are still investigating the cause for; and Bitcoin experienced a flood of transactions on the back of Elon Musk’s tweet of the Milady Ordinal, causing the mempool to skyrocket to 600k transactions and transaction fees to spike to over $20. The community is divided between whether Inscriptions are an net benefit for the king of blockchains (as it adds additional utility) or whether such transactions are more disruptive to the blockchain, departing from its original use case. Last week, we saw the FED report on PCE data, jobless claims, and also the FOMC shipping their expected 25bps rate hike – which was swiftly echoed by the BoE and the ECB. But surprisingly none of the headlines seemed to care about this and nor did the market really, which showed “business as usual.” There is however, greater concern placed on the collapse of yet another major regional bank, and some focus placed on the US debt ceiling. These macro events did set the stage for the headlines that did come up inside the crypto-native outlets, so without further ado…

Memecoins. The current hot topic for the space at this moment, as PEPE continues to grab media attention in order to provide the exit liquidity needed for early investors to cash out. Binance lists $PEPE and $FLOKI, and following the price action that occurred with both DOGE and SHIB – marked the local top for both coins as they hit ATH (PEPE surpassing $1B MCAP) and then proceeded to dump 80% down from those levels. Gas fees on Ethereum remain rampantly high, largely due to the active MeV bots guzzling gas in order to frontrun DEX memecoin transactions. Although it is also interesting to note that the Bitcoin network has also seen a spike in congestion, leading to Binance temporarily halting BTC withdrawals twice in the past 24 hours. It has caused the leading exchange to slide out of the top ten for Bitcoin spot transactions. Bitcoin, has seen its sixth largest outflow from CEXs on Friday, as reported by on-chain data.

On exchanges: Coinbase has launched an international exchange for institutional traders outside the US, and Gemini has also launched a crypto derivatives exchange serving over 30 countries worldwide. Cosmos-based DeFi protocol Nolus raised $2.5m to build the first cross-chain DeFi lease. Aptos has teamed up with Mastercard to create infrastructure for on-chain identity and payments, and the only other Move-based blockchain, SUI released its mainnet last week on the 4th of May. A company called Quadency has released an AI-assistant for trading, named “Cody.” And a document leaked from Google seems to imply that they may be behind and “may lose” the AI race among fierce competition and compounding technological progress. LBank debuted at Consensus 2023, and will collaborate with zkSync Era to power the next generation of dApps.

In the legal arena, Ripple claims its advantage over the SEC in their landmark lawsuit, Sen. Elizabeth Warren moves her mouth about crypto hampering efforts to impose sanctions, CBDCs are in the spotlight as “TBTF” banks such as JPMorgan gobble up smaller competitors with the financial help of the FDIC (yes, that’s fucked up). Lawmakers take a closer look at New York’s CRPTO act, and UK lawmakers go after all Bitcoin ATM’s in their jurisdiction as they are all deemed to be “unregistered” and hence, non-compliant. Meanwhile, the BRICS nations gain more traction against the Dollar as the shift in macroeconomic trends begins to take serious effect. In this edition of the Monthly Spin, we are announcing the depreciation of The Daily Spin newsletter – into a weekly version, which will begin publishing next week. So for all of those who have been following our Daily Newsletter column, whether by Reddit, Mirror.xyz, or any other channel… I would like to sincerely thank you all for the support and kind words of encouragement over the months. Barring weekends and holidays, we have managed to publish around 250 editions over the last year – and it has been my pleasure and hope that it has created much value for everyone involved. You guys know where to find me!

So April! Has been a month of steady gains in the crypto asset sector, despite a flailing macroeconomic environment and ever-concerning regulatory environment concerns in both the US and around the world. Bank failures have continued to make landfall due to interest rate shock, as FED Chair Jerome Powell takes the steepest measures to attempt to curb the largest rise in inflation of our generation, meanwhile coming up with creative solutions to keep control of the FED Balance Sheet. The EU has been under tremendous pressure from the issues that have been taking center stage; whether from government wages, retirement and pension fund management, to energy crises and corruption. But one very positive thing has come out of the EU – the approval of the MiCA regulatory framework for digital assets promises to be a beacon of standards that the rest of the world should look to follow. Conversely, SEC Chairman Gary Gensler has issued enforcement actions on every major crypto player Stateside while maintaining the lack of clarity needed to regulate the industry or have companies come into compliance – prompting an embarrassing intervention from US Congress and ongoing migration of the biggest innovators out of the jurisdiction for good. Meanwhile, the Asian central banks have been pursuing the opposite policy of expansion vs. tightening, as China DGAF and the BoJ remains geared for more growth in their financial markets and liquidity. And to sum it all up, Total Crypto Market Capitalization has been steadily growing past $1.1T dollars, BTC and ETH have hit their local highs, and the Altcoin cycle has spun around faster than a bottle at your typical unsupervised high-school party.

Two more things that must be mentioned in any newsletter format of these days: The explosion of AI into the public sphere, its ultra-fast and independent recursive iterations compounding the tech’s scope and impact faster than anything we’ve ever seen in history. And the second being its direct impact on the capital markets, private equity and venture capital allocations. The banks are really, really fucked. Been a long time coming, too. But as CZ points out, that is not a prerequisite for the success of cryptocurrencies. So without further ado, let’s get into our review of happenings for the first month of Q2!
