What Are Proposers?

The Proposer feature enables selected users to initiate transactions for review and approval by Safe’s signers. Proposers don’t have signing privileges—they simply set up transactions, which Safe signers then review, approve, or reject. This separation of duties helps reduce bottlenecks, making transaction preparation more efficient without compromising security.

Why Use Proposers?

For teams in decentralized organizations, particularly DAOs and institutions, managing workflows securely while maintaining flexibility is essential. Here’s how the Proposer Role makes it easier:

1. Efficient Delegation: Non-signers can prepare transactions without adding workload for signers, freeing up time for the finance or operations teams.

2. Maintained Security: Only designated Safe signers have the final say, so every transaction is still protected by Safe’s signature requirements.

3. Ideal for High-Volume Transactions: Proposers are perfect for teams dealing with recurring or high-frequency transactions, such as payroll, grants, etc.

How to Get Started

How It Works:

When you deploy a Safe on your primary network (e.g., Ethereum), you can later add it to additional networks like Binance Smart Chain or Polygon while keeping the same Safe address. The process is seamless—just connect to the desired network from Safe{Wallet}, and the Safe will deploy on that chain. You can track all your Safes in the unified sidebar, easily switching between networks.

How to Deploy a Multichain Safe:

Creating Safes across multiple networks

Now you can create new Safes on multiple networks with the same address simultaneously.

If you already have an existing Safe account you want to add a network to, this now takes no longer than a few seconds using the reworked network selector.

Technical Information & Compatibility

When adding a network to an existing Safe, it will keep the initial owner structure, threshold, and modules, unless modified after deployment. Multichain Safe deployment is compatible with smart contract accounts version 1.3.0 and above. Older master copies cannot be cloned, and Safes created outside Safe{Wallet} may not be compatible.

🚨 zkSync Era Compatibility: zkSync Era is not compatible with this feature, and sending funds to a zkSync Era address used on another chain will result in loss of funds.

Network-Specific Limitations: Safes using EIP-155 deployment on Optimism, Base, and Avalanche cannot be cloned to Polygon, Arbitrum, and other networks.

In the dynamic landscape of Ethereum, the traditional concept of digital ownership through externally owned accounts (EOAs) is revealing its limitations. As Ethereum's ecosystem grows, incorporating more complex applications and expanding through layer-2 scaling solutions, it becomes evident that our foundational tools for ownership and interaction need an overhaul.

The transition to smart accounts is not just a technical upgrade; it's a necessary evolution to make Ethereum truly accessible and secure, as also stated by Vitalik Buterin.

While the path to transition will come with its own set of challenges, the outcome will make Ethereum finally suitable for the masses.

Challenges of EOAs

EOAs are the current standard for user interactions on Ethereum. Most wallets and application are leveraging EOAs today. It’s a simple account type that is native to the Ethereum blockchain and essentially allows a private key (often represented with a secret phrase / seed phrase) to perform operations on the account.

But this simple logic also makes EOAs fundamentally limited. They lack the capability to perform complex operations or automations. Users are required to learn about private keys, gas fees, ERC-20 approvals and more technical concepts early on. This creates challenges for onboarding and overall accessibility for many user groups.

The limitation of EOAs not only undermines the user experience but also poses serious security risks. Compromised or misplaced private keys associated with EOAs can lead to irreversible losses. And there is a general lack of security features such as allow- or deny-list functionalities or transaction thresholds. Research showed that over $3.8B was lost due to crypto hacks in 2022 alone.

The full potential of digital ownership on Ethereum requires a more flexible and powerful type of account.

What are Smart Accounts?

While EOAs leverage native authentication logic from Ethereum, smart accounts are based on smart contracts which define the authentication rules. This enables smart accounts to be freely programable. This flexibility provides completely new design spaces to solve long-lasting UX and security challenges of Ethereum such as cross-chain interoperability and key management. An Ethereum standard implemented in 2023, ERC-4337, further empowered smart accounts by making them a primary account type on the Ethereum blockchain.

Benefits of Smart Accounts

The evolution from EOAs to smart accounts is similar to the leap from cell phones to smartphones, unleashing a wave on innovation, use-cases and customizations for different user needs. Smart accounts will fundamentally level up the security and UX of Ethereum with features like:

• Multisigs

  Wallets that are controlled not just by a single private key but leverage multiple private keys, potentially controlled by different individuals or companies

• Seedless onboarding

  Allow users to onboard with a social account (Google, etc.) or email, while still being able to migrate to a more trustless setup at a later point

• Batched transactions

  Create more seamless dapp interaction that bundles multiple onchain actions into one single transaction

• Sponsored transactions

  Allow applications or even entire chains to sponsor gas fees, massively increasing the UX of web3 interactions

• Key rotation

  Detach signing key with the account, allowing to exchange the signer setup without having to migrate assets to a new account

• Automation

  Replicate known patterns of automations that are common in web2 / traditional finance such as subscriptions

• Security mechanisms

  Enable onchain security features like allow- and deny-lists, blocking of interactions with malicious contracts, etc.

• Hybrid custody

  Allow accounts to be co-managed by trusted third-parties, enabling recovery or fraud prevention that give users peace-of-mind.

The tip of the iceberg: Smart Accounts unlock a range of UX and security benefits

First Slowly, Then All at Once

The shift towards smart accounts is met with several challenges, primarily due to the widespread use of EOAs and the optimization of many applications and wallets today. However, layer-2 solutions present a new opportunity to redefine the standard by prioritizing smart accounts from the outset.

In 2024 we might see the tipping point for smart account adoption, with general momentum on the builder side (mostly accelerated by ERC-4337) and entire L2’s switching to making smart accounts the default. Also, there is a lot of new catalysts on the horizon like Coinbase leveraging smart accounts, and cross-chain interoperability enabled through smart accounts.

A recent proposal to the core Ethereum protocol, EIP-3074, is creating another stepping stone. EIP-3074 can provide some smart account functionality to legacy wallets and when combined with another Ethereum protocol upgrade, EIP-5003, would allow not just migrating, but fully converting legacy wallets into smart accounts.

The combination of two upgrades to the Ethereum protocol, EIP-3074 and EIP-5003, can enable a seamless transition from existing EOAs to smart accounts.

Through the transition to smart accounts, Ethereum will become a more viable option for less technical audiences, use-cases and major enterprises building solutions on Ethereum, creating a positive flywheel for smart account adoption.

Since its inception in 2018, Safe has been at the forefront of pioneering smart accounts on Ethereum. Safe has now become the largest smart account infrastructure in the industry with over 8 million smart accounts deployed. It has evolved into arguably the most Lindy smart contract on Ethereum holding >100B+ worth of assets and is deployed on 100+ EVM networks.

The core mission of Safe is to accelerate the transition to smart accounts. Through open-source technologies and ecosystem support initiatives, Safe promotes the benefits of smart accounts and enables users and developers to take advantage of them.

But this is just the beginning of the journey to make every web3 user account a smart account.

Why Smart Accounts Matter

Currently, Ethereum interactions mainly utilize Externally Owned Accounts (EOAs), which authenticate transactions through private keys. However, EOAs are basic, lack complex functionalities, and require users to understand private key management, gas fees, and other technical aspects, making accessibility and security a challenge. The full potential of digital ownership requires a more flexible and powerful type of account.

Smart accounts leverage smart contracts for authentication, allowing for flexibility and programmability. The transition from EOAs to smart accounts is similar to the leap from cell phones to smartphones, unleashing a wave of innovation, use-cases and customizations for different user needs. Smart accounts will fundamentally level up the security and UX of Ethereum with features like Multisig, recovery mechanisms, seedless onboarding and more.

The Road to Account Abstraction

In order for smart accounts to become the default user accounts for everyone, they need to become first-class citizens in the Ethereum protocol (commonly referred to as account abstraction or AA).

Status Quo

Recent developments have been promising, with the community embracing ERC-4337 as a stepping stone towards smart accounts. This initiative has sparked the development of a robust ecosystem, laying the groundwork for subsequent enhancements, including the integration of native account abstraction on Layer 2 solutions (RIP-7560) and similar efforts on Layer 1.

ERC-4337 initially got started with high expectations, which helped gather momentum and attract developers. There have been positive signals that we are close to reaching the tipping point, with major exchanges (OKX, Coinbase) and wallets (Trust, Metamask) investing into support for ERC-4337.

The Endgame

One of the key things that needs to be overcome is the fact that legacy users need to be migrated to smart accounts. While many are already migrating organically, there is a need for better migration paths. A recent upgrade to the core Ethereum protocol, EIP-3074, is creating such a stepping stone. EIP-3074 can provide some smart account functionality to legacy wallets while reducing the burden for a full migration. It also allows application developers to build a more cohesive user experience across legacy wallets and smart accounts.

A second Ethereum protocol upgrade, EIP-5003, would allow not just migrating, but fully converting legacy wallets into smart accounts. The combination of two upgrades to the Ethereum protocol, EIP-3074 and EIP-5003, can enable a seamless transition from existing EOAs to smart accounts.

The Ownership Layer: Smart Account Infrastructure

Safe, from its inception, has been driven by enabling onchain ownership of assets, data and identity for all. We also believe ownership should be sovereign, open source and secure and usable. As the only battle-tested smart account in Ethereum, Safe will take leadership in driving this movement forward and collaborate with varied communities to drive the mission of Ownership for all, to realize the full potential of web3.

Safe{Core}

At the core of the Safe Ownership Layer is the Safe Smart Account. It is the unifying element of the Safe Ecosystem and provides interoperability and composability. The Safe Smart Account prioritizes on:

• Security: From low-level design decisions such as how delegatecalls are handled, up to off-chain procedures like a $1M bug bounty and formal verification, the Safe Smart Account never compromises on security. Additionally, the $100B assets secured to date create a Lindy effect.

• Flexibility: By being built from day 1 as a modular smart account, Safe Smart Accounts can adapt to needs of the user, such as progressive decentralization for DAOs. It also allows Safe Smart Accounts to stay forward-compatible to upcoming standards such as ERC-4337, ERC-7579 and ERC-6900 through adapters.

The Safe Smart Account is built to last. If we want to see major enterprises, big brands and (financial) institutions leverage smart accounts, they need to feel comfortable making long-term investments with minimum risk.

Safe{Core} also includes abstraction layers around the Safe Smart Account:

• SDK: Development Kit that allows interacting with Safe Smart Accounts, solving for common developer challenges.

• API: Set of endpoints and underlying services that index Safe Smart Account transactions / userOps, allow exchange of off-chain signatures and provide event service.

Safe{Wallet}

Safe{Wallet} serves as a showcase for what Safe Smart Accounts can be used for. While it is primarily used for high-security use-cases today, it is designed to be user-group agnostic, serving as a gateway for everyone looking to take advantage of smart accounts.

Safe{Wallet} found early PMF with its multisig functionality and to date, is used by most DAOs to secure their treasuries. The product continues to innovate in features that focus on security and user experience including:

• Counterfactual deployment

• Transaction simulation

• Risk assessment

• Social recovery

More innovations are in the works to make secure asset ownership accessible for everyone.

Ecosystem: Safe is Everywhere

The transition to smart accounts cannot be achieved by a single team. It requires hundreds of teams unlocking the benefits of smart accounts to different user-groups. These teams, building end-user applications, developer tooling, or protocols around the Safe Smart Account, form the Safe Ecosystem. Some of the larger areas which already are being explored within the Safe Ecosystem are shown below. A full list of the 200+ ecosystem applications can be found here.

The Safe Ecosystem Foundation was established with $100M backing to foster the growth of the Safe Ecosystem and the strengthening of Safe Smart Account infrastructure via initiatives such as:

• Funding: Through grants, accelerators, and investments, the foundation provides financial support to promising projects that align with the Safe Protocol’s objectives.

• Gas Sponsorship: An initiative aimed at reducing the entry barriers for new users and developers by covering the gas costs. Starting with Base and gradually expanding this to more networks.

• Education and Events: Educational initiatives, co-marketing, event sponsorships and flagship events like Safe{Con} to spread knowledge, encourage collaboration, and showcase innovations within the Safe Ecosystem.

Roadmap

Cross-chain: Embracing a thousand L2s

Ethereum has long been not just a single blockchain. It’s evolved into a set of interconnected networks through its rollup-centric roadmap. In the coming years, thousands of rollups may emerge, bringing opportunities and challenges to smart accounts.

A designated team was formed around the objective to cease opportunities and mitigate challenges for Safe in this rollup-centric future, making sure Safe can scale alongside Ethereum.

L2s, Powered by Safe

Layer-2 solutions present a new opportunity to prioritize smart accounts from the outset. World Chain, a new L2 launching soon by Worldcoin, is leading the charge for networks that onboard their users primarily to Safe Smart Accounts.

Worldcoin has deployed millions of Safe Smart Accounts to date and is planning to migrate them to World Chain over the next months. In the future we will see more L2s experiment with native account abstraction (RIP-7560) or lean into smart accounts in different ways. In the Optimism ecosystem, the Safe Smart Account even comes pre-deployed on every new OP Stack chain and is a core part of the Superchain Dev Console.

Network Abstraction

While individual L2s optimizing on smart accounts will be a major unlock, achieving cross-chain functionality remains a challenge. A promising solution are keystores, which separate authentication logic from account assets and apply consistent authentication across networks using zero-knowledge proofs. This approach, developed collaboratively by multiple teams, aims to substantially enhance the cross-chain experience of smart accounts and be fundamental to fully abstracting networks from end-users.

Wallet Chains

With the emergence of app-chains, there will also be application-specific rollups for wallets. Paired with cross-chain patterns such as keystores, this can enable better user experience for users but also unlock new business models for wallets. Safe aims to be the underlying infrastructure for these upcoming wallet chains, forming an interoperable and synergetic ecosystem.

Modular Smart Accounts: The “App Store” Moment

Smartphones unlocked countless ways to extend the functionality of mobile phones, creating a vibrant and sustainable developer ecosystem. In a similar way, smart accounts will enable the creation of marketplaces for modules/plugins, serving similar purposes to the App Store:

• Curation/Security: Similar to how app stores curate applications, modular smart accounts can utilize registries to ensure that all modules meet security (or other) standards.

• Distribution: This modular system also creates a vibrant marketplace where developers can offer specialized modules, allowing them to reach a global audience. This ecosystem fosters innovation and competition, driving the development of new features and capabilities.

• Revenue streams: Incorporating in-module payment systems can simplify processes like transaction fee payments, enhancing the overall user experience and efficiency—akin to in-app purchases in mobile applications.

Initial specifications towards a marketplace framework were started last year and projects like Rhinestone, ZenGuard are working on critical infrastructure and tooling. Also, the community is aligning on standards like ERC-7579 (backed by Rhinestone, zerodev, Biconomy, OKX) and ERC-6900 (backed by Alchemy) that will provide a foundation for module marketplaces to be built and used safely.

Crossing the chasm: Turning 1B people into digital owners

We start to approach the maximum of users that can realistically be onboarded to simple EOA-based wallets. To bring a billion users onchain, a transition to smart accounts is needed, making Ethereum a more viable option for less technical audiences and use-cases, as well as large brands building solutions. While smart accounts have been primarily used for high-value use-cases due to features such as Multisig, the next months will focus on retail-oriented features.

Sponsored transactions

Users can transact without needing to own cryptocurrency themselves, as transaction fees are paid by third parties or service providers.

Passkeys

Offers a simpler and more secure authentication method, with a private key type natively supported by consumer products such as smartphones and laptops. E.g. see Cometh's or Candide’s Passkey solution.

Recovery

Enables users to recover access to their accounts easily and securely, even if they lose their private keys, through predefined recovery mechanisms.

Session Keys

Allows to give temporary or restricted permissions to applications, to streamline the risk of low-risk actions such as in a gaming context.

Hybrid Custody

Instead of choosing between self-custody and third-party custody, smart accounts will enable hybrid solutions where certain permissions can be delegated to trusted parties (such as co-signing transactions or recovery). For example, exchanges could provide web3 wallets that still allow the exchange to recover the wallet if their users lose their keys. Another example is a trusted bank like Sygnum providing custodial recovery services.

These and more innovations emerging this year will make security accessible for the next wave of users onboarding to Ethereum.

Finding the Balance: Value Creation and Value Capture

Over the coming months, various initiatives will explore ways in which value in the Safe Ecosystem can be created, captured and distributed.

Community-aligned fees

Over the next few days, Safe{Wallet} will introduce a first example of how fees can be aligned with community interests. There will be further experiments throughout 2024.

Tokenize Value

The Safe Smart Account provides new opportunities to create utility for the SAFE token. Mechanisms should be created to link the growth of the Safe ecosystem to the growth in utility of SAFE, with the SafeDAO being involved in defining and evolving the SAFE Token utility, including funding of workstreams.

Commitment to open-source

Every line of code that was written for *Safe’*s production-software Safe{Wallet} and Safe{Core}, was open-sourced. There is a strong commitment from SafeDAO to keep the core Safe Smart Account token-less and focus future SAFE Token utilities on complementary protocol components.

Launching Safe{Pass}

The coming years are crucial for the adoption of smart accounts so it will be important to collaborate as an ecosystem to solve complex challenges. In order to create momentum for the transition to smart accounts, the Safe{Pass} initiative was formed. The Safe{Pass} program rewards activity in the Safe Ecosystem, with various rewards from Safe and other mission-aligned projects such as EigenLayer, ENS (Ethereum Name Service), Euler, Rainbow, Wormhole.

It not only provides a way to validate transactions and secure the network, but it also offers other benefits to participants including aligning economic incentives, long-term value accrual, supporting ethereum's development and much more.

Since Ethereum's migration from Proof-of-Work to Proof-of-Stake, many new ways for the ecosystem to participate in securing the network have emerged. From liquid staking providers, improved infrastructure providers, and now the emergence of restaking from providers such as EigenLayer, the importance of staking and restaking will only continue to grow.

In this post, we'll cover why Safe Accounts should be at the core of staking strategies for individual and institutional players. We’ll also highlight some examples from around the Safe Ecosystem of production-ready products and tooling.

Why Smart Staking Matters

Naturally, security is a primary concern for any self or institutional staker. Poorly managed staking exposes crypto holders to risks such as hacks, operational penalties in the form of slashing, and more. These can be mitigated through quality vendor selection and enabling multi-factor authentication and the selection of reputable validators. Efficient staking practices not only maximize returns but also strengthen the blockchain's security, establishing a foundation for a thriving crypto network.

The Advantages Safe Provides to Stakers

Safe Accounts provide a superior alternative to traditional Externally Owned Accounts (EOAs) for staking setups, for many reasons including:

Staking on Ethereum and other Networks

Safes can be used to natively stake tokens within the Ethereum, Base, Avalanche, and other networks.

Safe offers fully audited, formally verified security for validator rewards and simplifies the management of staking assets. Safe Accounts come with multi-signature (multisig) capabilities, as well as other easily customizable access features such as adjustable roles for different administrators, automated distribution processes, and more. This way, no single key can serve as a point of failure.

Considering withdrawal addresses can be set only once, it is crucial to establish a future-proof address that permits re-assigning signing keys in case of a compromise or if you need to migrate your security setup.

Staking Services

Other staking services also provide a seamless way to incorporate Safe as part of your setup. Many of the existing staking services are also available directly from the Safe App Store.

Stakefish supports staking for Ethereum using Safe. This setup adds an additional layer of security by requiring multiple signatures for staking transactions, enhancing the security of the staking process .

Lido allows users to stake across many networks, minting transferable tokens that earn staking rewards while remaining usable for other on-chain activities. Users can stake Ethereum using Safe, allowing them to stake ETH and receive stETH, which represents the staked Ethereum plus daily staking rewards.

Rocket Pool allows both liquid staking using rETH. and staking as a node operator, both using Safe to elevate security.

Kiln enables Safe users to stake ETH on dedicated validators simply and securely, while also adding exposure to the restaking protocol, Eigenlayer.

Restaking

Restaking allows stakeholders to automatically reinvest staking rewards to enhance their compounded returns over time. Users can restake their $ETH while extending cryptoeconomic security to additional applications on the network. The potential of new protocols, such as EigenLayer, lies in the ability to aggregate and extend cryptoeconomic security through restaking.

Using Safe, stakeholders can integrate restaking processes within a secure environment. For the reasons previously mentioned, Safe is already being used on platforms such as Kiln and p2p.org to provide better infrastructure for staking/restaking strategies.

DAOs and Governance Tokens

On Synthetix, users can can stake SNX tokens using Safe, allowing users to participate in minting and burning sUSD, and claiming staking rewards while benefiting from the security of Safe.

On the journey to full account abstraction (AA) on Ethereum, we stand at a crossroads: ERC-4337 lies behind us, while ahead, EIP-3074 opened up a new path towards full AA. However, there is a risk to diverge onto the dangerous path of EOA Enshrinement. To prevent this it's critical to support EIP-3074 with the addition of EIP-5003 in the upcoming hardfork. This builds a sturdy bridge to full AA, avoiding the risk of fragmentation and leading Ethereum safely towards the bright future of smart accounts.

Tl;dr:

The Ethereum Core Developers have aligned to incorporate EIP-3074 in the upcoming Prague/Electra hardfork, targeted for Q4 2024 / early 2025. EIP-3074 allows externally owned accounts (EOAs) to delegate their transaction capabilities to smart contracts, enhancing functionalities like transaction sponsorship and batch processing. While EIP-3074 serves as a short-term fix to improve the UX of EOAs, most of the Ethereum community is still aligned that the end-goal is to move all users to smart accounts. EIP-3074 brings some improvements to smart accounts and is a stepping stone towards full AA, but it absolutely requires EIP-5003 to fully get there. Without EIP-5003, we would enshrine EOAs further.

What is EIP-3074?

EIP-3074 modifies the Ethereum protocol to allow EOAs to delegate (AUTH) their transaction capabilities to smart contracts (so-called “invokers”), enabling additional functionality like:

• Sponsored transactions: Ability for dapps or other parties to sponsor the gas of a transaction.

• Batched transactions: This allows for two or more contract calls to be executed in the same transaction. Users can call approve and transferFrom in a single transaction, for example.

• **Access delegation: **Users can delegate control of their EOA to other keys which might have different security properties. For example, a user may add a phone hot wallet key with a daily allowance to their account.

These features were so far only accessible to smart accounts. Which meant that applications had to build two different user experiences for EOAs and smart accounts.

Opportunities for smart accounts

EIP-3074 primarily empowers EOAs, but it also brings some new beneficial side-effects for smart accounts:

• Easier migration: With empowered EOAs, users could more easily migrate to smart accounts. A crucial challenge for users to switch to smart accounts so far was the effort and gas cost of migrating existing assets. EIP-3074 allows smoother migration in a single batched & gas-sponsored transaction.

• Unified UX/DevEx: Dapps can build better user experiences without having to exclude EOAs. This increases significantly the incentives to leverage sponsored transactions and transaction batching, as well as standards around them. Dapps would generally need to adjust to more flexible account logic, which would allow smart account features like session keys or multisig to fit better into overall development frameworks.

• Hybrid accounts: EOAs can set smart accounts as invokers. For example, this would enable a Safe Smart Account to control an EOA, while the EOA’s private key retains superiority and could disable the Safe’s control. This could lead to interesting new hybrid custody use-cases or allow EOA users to “test” a smart account before migrating assets.

EIP-5003: Closing the gap to smart accounts

While EIP-3074 allows to delegate control over an EOA to smart accounts, the original private key can still authorize any action on the EOA. This prevents EIP-3074 to introduce any (security) features such as:

• Multisig: Multi-signature wallets or onchain multi-factor authentication still require a smart account as EIP-3074 EOAs at any point are still controlled by the original private key.

• Recovery: While certain recovery schemes may be possible, it is never possible to recover (rotate) the primary private key controlling the EOA with EIP-3074, so many recovery schemes require a full smart account.

• Quantum-resistance: Eventually we’ll need to migrate users anyways to smart accounts to achieve quantum-resistance, either naturally or through an emergency hardfork.

• Others: Deny-lists, co-signers/guards, fallback handlers that require different signature schemes depending on the use-case.

There is a viable migration path discussed that would close the gap and allow a full migration of existing EOAs into smart accounts: EIP-5003. This upgrade extends EIP-3074, allowing for deployment of smart contract code at the address of the EOA, while revoking access of the original private key in the process. This allows fully converting EOAs into smart accounts while keeping the public address, soulbound tokens and non-transferable reputation and generally guaranteeing forward-compatibility with the future account abstraction roadmap.

However, there have been some concerns on the viability of this upgrade path, particularly related to edge-cases where the private key, that was assumed to be revoked, could still authorize actions on the account:

• Cross-chain: The revoked EOA key remains valid on other networks, including those that may emerge in the future. This could allow anyone having access to the OG private key to claim the same account on different networks and move assets.

  • If an EOA is migrated to a smart account on a specific network, it should not be assumed that the EOA is migrated on new networks automatically. Smart accounts already face a similar issue today, with them not being deployed on new networks as well as state changes (key rotations) not being synced. Cross-chain approaches like keystore rollups may mitigate this to a certain extent.

• Off-chain signatures: The compromised key can still be misused in off-chain systems, such as the login processes of dapps or permit2 token approvals, which verify signatures. While these systems may support smart contract signature standards like EIP-1271, they typically default to this only if the standard ecrecover fails, leaving room for the revoked key to potentially compromise accounts.

  • The sensible approach would be, as part of EIP-5003, for ecrecover to always fail for EOAs that were migrated to smart accounts. A migration to a smart account should be an explicit and complete move to a new authentication logic.

Is EIP-3074 good or bad for AA?

Over the last months, the community leaned into ERC-4337 as a first step towards full AA. It allowed kick-starting a developer ecosystem, stabilizing the spec and tooling for bundlers and creating learnings. It was subsequently planned to implement native AA on L2s (RIP-7560) and eventually bring a similar EIP on L1.

ERC-4337 initially got started with hugely inflated expectations, which helped gather momentum and attract developers. There have been positive signals that we are close to reaching the tipping point, with major exchanges (OKX, Coinbase) and wallets (Trust, Metamask) investing into support for ERC-4337. But the inflated expectations also meant the inevitable sobering moment that full AA (via RIP-7560 or similar) will take longer than initially expected, as the appetite / urgency for L2s to work on RIP-7560 is still small today.

This is one of the reasons, parts of the community turned to EIP-3074. As the migration of users to smart accounts seemed too far out, some voices became loud to at least partially fix EOAs in the meantime. EIP-3074 does not replace ERC-4337, they are actually quite synergetic, but it does shift the focus further away from ERC-4337/RIP-7560.

In order for full AA to be feasible, we need to find ways to migrate existing EOAs. As EOAs still make up a majority of users in Ethereum, impacting priorities of developers and teams. This can happen in two ways, (1) have users manually switch to smart accounts or (2) implement ways to turn EOAs into smart accounts.

The inclusion of EIP-3074 carries the risk that it will bring us further away from achieving full AA. It enhances EOAs, so it negatively contributes to (1), while not actually solving for (2).

Without EIP-5003, EIP-3074 is currently lacking any clear pathway to full AA and has a net-negative impact on AA adoption. Even more, after the Prague/Electra hard fork there might not be a window to include AA-related upgrades for another 2 years as focus will shift towards verkle trees. Therefore we should include EIP-5003 in the Prague/Electra hardfork, to prevent having EOAs enshrined further.

Summary

The debate around EIP-3074 is a critical juncture for Ethereum's account abstraction trajectory.

Original AA Roadmap

Experiment with application-level AA (ERC-4337), showcase native AA via L2s (RIP-7560) and eventually bring native AA to L1. Solve for legacy EOAs via migration transaction (EIP-5003, EIP-7377 or even force-migration). This path is likely to take significantly longer than expected and is held back by EOA dominance.

What we SHOULD be doing instead

Implement EIP-3074, but also include EIP-5003 in the Prague/Electra hardfork, allowing for a full migration to smart accounts. This allows not leaving legacy users behind while ensuring that they don’t hold up AA efforts.

What we are currently planning to do (Worst case)

Only implement EIP-3074, and risk enshrining EOAs, or at least holding up the adoption of smart accounts significantly.

Safe has a long-lasting history, from an internal project at Gnosis, to an independent ecosystem through a spin-off. This article walks through the most significant milestones over the last 7 years, and gives a glimpse into one of the oldest and most established projects in the Ethereum ecosystem.

The inception: Gnosis Multi-signature Wallet

Gnosis was started in 2016 to explore prediction markets as a new primitive on Ethereum. While prediction markets never found significant product-market-fit, Gnosis ended up building a lot of fundamental infrastructure—from Cow Swap, to Gnosis Chain, to now Gnosis Pay. And Gnosis just recently published a renewed Gnosis 3.0 vision for how everything will link together.

Safe’s history begins with Gnosis’ ICO in early 2017. As a result of the token sale, Gnosis needed a secure way to self-custody the proceeds. At this point, no mature and suitable solution had existed, so Stefan George wrote the code for his own multi-signature wallet, which was later open-sourced as the Gnosis Multi-signature Wallet.

With hundreds of projects following the path of conducting an ICO, the Gnosis Multi-signature Wallet quickly found adoption and became the de-facto standard for multisigs with over $1B worth of assets secured within a few years.

Gnosis Safe was born

It quickly became apparent that smart-contract-based wallets (smart wallets) can provide unique features. This led Gnosis to build up a team and start working on a next generation solution. Gnosis Safe was born in 2018 as a general-purpose Smart Account.

Compared to its predecessor, Gnosis Safe had several benefits:

• Gas efficiency: Used a proxy-singleton architecture, massively optimising the gas-efficiency.

• Modular architecture: Gnosis Safe introduced a modular architecture, allowing Safe Smart Accounts to add additional features over time, without users having to migrate to a new account.

• Formally verified: Over 6 months were invested into making Gnosis Safe the first (and to our knowledge the only) Smart Account that is formally verified.

A mobile wallet that was ahead of its time

The idea was to build a mass-friendly mobile wallet that would leverage Smart Accounts to combine what was not possible before—good UX with high security.

Looking back, the Gnosis Safe mobile wallet in 2018 was way ahead of its time, featuring functionality that is only now slowly reaching maturity and wide-spread adoption:

• Counterfactual deployment: The Gnosis Safe proxy would only be deployed once the user actually sends assets to it, allowing for more frictionless onboarding

• Seedless onboarding: The user could choose to create an account without a seed phrase, with the private keys being stored on the device, with the option to add a more secure key that is backed up using a seed phrase at a later point

• **Batched transactions: **As the first implementation of transaction batching for wallets, Gnosis Safe was able to provide streamlined UX, despite only a few applications taking advantage of it

• 2FA using browser extension or keycard: For additional security, it was possible to add additional keys using a designated browser extension or the Status Keycard

• Pay gas fees in ERC-20 tokens: Using meta-transactions, the Gnosis Safe mobile wallet was able to allow gas fee payments in any ERC-20 token (not just Ether) stored in the wallet, a feature that is nowadays getting new traction with ERC-4337 paymasters

While the direction was right, the timing was off for the Gnosis Safe mobile wallet.

At this point DeFi did not exist yet, and there were no actual retail end-users on Ethereum yet. So due to minimal adoption, the retail-focused wallet solution was discontinued.

Back to the roots

So after a less successful mobile wallet, the team went back to the drawing board. A few months later, “Gnosis Safe for teams” (later renamed to just “Gnosis Safe”) was introduced, which was a new web application that followed the footstep of the initial Gnosis Multi-signature Wallet, but built on the new Safe Smart Account.

While still targeting teams, not individuals, the new smart contracts allowed the product to reach new user-groups due to better UX features and lower gas costs. The new solution found product-market-fit within only a few months, and even a CEX (Bitfinex) started using Gnosis Safe for the cold-storage of their customer assets.

Within less than a year, over $1B worth of assets were moved to Safe Smart Accounts, building up a Lindy effect as the smart contracts were increasingly trusted.

Specifically because of its modular architecture, Gnosis Safe also become a primary actor in the explosion of the DAO ecosystem that started in 2020. Innovations like SafeSnap enabled founding teams to hand over control of accounts (admin keys / treasuries) to a community, enabling progressive decentralisation.

To date, most DAO treasuries operate on Safe, and a range of sophisticated treasury management teams (Karpatkey) and tooling (Zodiac Modules, Coinshift) have emerged, creating further network effects.

Becoming critical infrastructure

In 2021, Gnosis itself transitioned into a DAO: GnosisDAO, with multiple projects being part of the GnosisDAO ecosystem such as CoW Swap, Gnosis Guild, Karpatkey and Gnosis Chain.

At the same time, Gnosis Safe saw continued growth in adoption. The initial focus was on user-groups that benefit most from the additional security and modularity of the Safe Smart Account, like crypto projects and DAOs. But over time, more and more user-groups organically started adopting Gnosis Safe as the product become more mature, reliable and accessible, including Market Makers, VCs, high-net-worth individuals and (NFT) collectives. Probably the most notable user being Vitalik Buterin himself, who moved a majority of his ETH holdings to Gnosis Safe that year.

Gnosis Safe also took a significant leap towards interoperability and scalability by going multichain. This also resulted in Gnosis Safe becoming a key piece of infrastructure that every new network (whether L1 or L2) required in order to allow for consistency across networks for teams securing their protocols with Gnosis Safe.

Additionally, Gnosis Safe expanded its (DeFi) capabilities with “Safe Apps”, to provide a convenient way to interact with the vibrant ecosystem of Ethereum apps directly within the wallet interface.

Drop the Gnosis, It’s just “Safe”

In 2022, it become clear the Gnosis Safe was more than just a product and that it will require a range of tailor-made solutions to optimize for the various user-groups that started using Gnosis Safe. So the GnosisDAO community decided to spin-off the project. The mission of (now) Safe being to grow an entire ecosystem around the Safe Smart Account with the goal to eventually have every user-group and use-case on Ethereum benefit from Smart Accounts.

After a successful fundraise from strategic investors, and the incorporation of the Safe Ecosystem Foundation, SafeDAO was formed in 2023.

“SafeDAO’s mission is to establish [smart accounts] as the default means for interacting with web3. (…) Through open source components and ecosystem initiatives we are nurturing the Safe Ecosystem, consisting of wallets, infrastructure, tooling and services.” (SafeDAO Constitution)

In 2023, Safe also launched Safe{Core}, the developer suite focused on fostering a vibrant ecosystem of wallets and applications leveraging Safe Smart Accounts. In the same year, Safe also reached new high-scores like 1M Safe Smart Accounts created across various use cases from AI to social, gaming and identity.

Some examples:

• AI Agents make up some 50% of the Safe transactions on Gnosis Chain through Autonolas

• Safe Smart Accounts deployed through Worldcoin create 100,000s of transactions each month

• Drakula.app (a web3 TikTok) onboards >20,000 users to smart accounts in 48 hours

It’s still early

Now, in 2024, Safe has become THE smart contract securing the second-most assets with $100B after the ETH Staking deposit contract. The AI Identity Crisis: Will We Still Know Who We Are?

In our last Safe Case, we covered a near future where sophisticated AI agents roam the internet, interacting with humans and each other, blurring the lines between physical and digital reality. In this world, a troubling question emerges: How will we verify our own identity—our very sense of self—when artificial intelligence becomes indistinguishable from human intelligence?

As AI gets better at mimicking humans online, proving who's real and who's not is becoming a critical challenge. Decentralized identity systems could help, but they're still early stage.

Truly solving this problem will take more than just focusing on the technical side–we'll need to fundamentally rethink what identity and trust mean in an AI-driven world.

What is Identity Anyway?

Our identity is gradually becoming primarily digital. Consequently, our digital identities should be secure, verifiable, and transferable across various platforms, networks, and contexts. This situation prompts questions about privacy, control, and the role of centralized authorities in handling our identities.

To complicate things further, as AI becomes more adept at creating human-like content and interactions, differentiating between real and artificial personas will become increasingly challenging. The necessity for new ways to establish trust and authenticity in our digital relationships is clear.

Enter Worldcoin and World ID Proof of Humanity

World ID is a privacy-preserving proof of personhood system that allows users to verify their human-ness online while maintaining their privacy through zero-knowledge proofs. The system utilizes a custom biometric device called the Orb, which has been designed to provide a long-term, viable solution for issuing AI-safe proof of personhood verifications.

World IDs are issued on the Worldcoin protocol, enabling individuals to prove their humanness to any verifier, including web2 applications, while preserving their privacy. The protocol has the potential to issue other credentials in the future. World ID aims to be personbound, meaning that it should only be used by the individual it was issued to, making it difficult for fraudulent actors to use stolen or acquired World ID credentials. Additionally, the system ensures that individuals can always regain possession of a lost or stolen World ID.

The Worldcoin team has recently open-sourced their Orb hardware, demonstrating their commitment to a decentralized future that is better adapted to the complex needs of digital-first identity.

To date, Worldcoin has deployed 4M accounts, all represented as Safe Smart Accounts on the backend. The view of the Worldcoin team is that emerging AI will necessitate more advanced systems as “proof of personhood”. Identity should be self custodial and should remain outside of the sole control of centralized authorities, while remaining future-proof and flexible in the face of quantum computing and other threats to the existing security model.

Becoming Future-Proof

More so than assets, identity is an invaluable part of our being that must be self custodial by definition.

One of the benefits of Safe Accounts, and the reason why Worldcoin chose to build on top of the Safe stack is the flexbility and customizability that smart accounts provide. EOAs are flexible but ultimately not suited for the task of securing what matters most. Say your passport is stored on your browser based wallet and is hacked. You're stuck and can't move. With a smart account, you can quickly rotate the compromised key and move along without any issues. Further, governments could have recovery mechanisms that allow you to recover your documents in certain cases.

Worldcoin will continue to onboard users and a larger share will increasingly come to use these accounts for transacting, validating social interactions, and much more.

Decentralized social protocols like Farcaster and Lens are demonstrating the potential for new, user-controlled social experiences and viable creator revenue models. These protocols allow developers to quickly build innovative features, such as Farcaster Frames, which enable identity verification and in-app purchases directly from users' social feeds. Much like how DeFi protocols can be combined like Lego blocks, social protocols will allow users to customize their online interactions based on their preferences and needs.

However, securing user accounts is critical in this new paradigm. Lens has already integrated support for Safe accounts, while Farcaster is actively working to make smart accounts first-class citizens at the protocol level. Smart accounts provide enhanced security and recovery options compared to traditional blockchain wallets.

One intriguing TikTok-killer application is Drakula.app, which allows users to invest directly in their favorite content creators. In the current YouTube ecosystem, value is captured primarily by the platform and top creators. But what if fans could "invest" early in emerging talent, gain access to exclusive content, and share in the ad revenue? Many in the crypto community believe this model represents the future of creator economies.

Another notable example is Crypto: The Game, a 10-day, survival-themed virtual game where players link their Twitter accounts and vote to eliminate competitors until a single winner claims the prize pool. The game's first season attracted high-profile participants from Crypto Twitter, including 3LAU, Packy McCormick, Jesse Pollak, and Bored Elon Musk.

Where this all goes and why Smart Accounts matter

The intersection of identity, social and crypto could transform finance, governance, and resource distribution resulting in new emerging and self-sustaining communities. Instant, borderless, and accessible to all, digital money has the potential to connect people financially on a global scale. It's safer than cash, less vulnerable to theft and forgery, and can be a lifeline in crises where fast, cross-border transactions are critical.

But the benefits extend beyond finance. As AI blurs the line between human and machine, a privacy-preserving, sybil-resistant proof of personhood becomes essential. It could eliminate spam, enable truly democratic online governance, and serve as a "verified human" stamp on every interaction.

Combining digital identity with programmable money opens up new possibilities for aligning incentives and allocating resources fairly. Introduction

Web3 enables new forms of digital ownership and we see an increasing number of user-groups start onboarding to Ethereum. So the need for secure, flexible, and user-friendly wallet solutions has never been more critical.

Traditional wallet accounts (”EOAs”), while functional, fall short in security and flexibility. The fear of losing digital assets to security breaches, key loss, or even human mistakes due to bad UX has long been a barrier to broader adoption.

The transition to so-called “smart accounts” marks a significant upgrade, offering enhanced features like (social) recovery, automations and security mechanisms. This shift is vital for user confidence and, consequentially, user adoption.

But smart accounts have their own set of challenges for this multi-chain rollup centric future.

Cross-chain account abstraction

ERC-4337 Account Abstraction has significantly empowered smart accounts, nurturing a dynamic ecosystem around them. However, as smart accounts find more adoption, challenges become apparent, particularly around handling smart accounts across multiple L2s.

Smart accounts are, by nature, smart contracts deployed on a single network. And while it is possible to deploy smart accounts on multiple L2s and use them in parallel, these are still fundamentally separate accounts. This creates issues when the user wants to change how the account is controlled (such as a key rotation) as this operation would need to be performed on each account individually to prevent state drift between them (authentication becoming out-of-sync).

This becomes even more cumbersome with an ever-increasing number of new L2s being launched. As a new smart account would have to be deployed on each of them to make the network accessible to the user.

What is a Keystore Contract?

Let's dive into what makes the Keystore not just a step, but a leap forward for smart accounts.

A keystore is a system that allows you to have shared key management for multiple accounts. It essentially separates the authentication logic from the account itself and therefore allows to use the same logic for multiple accounts.

In the context of Ethereum, the keystore could contain the keys (session keys, passkeys, social recovery keys) which could range from simple ECDSA to quantum-resistant signing methods like Winternitz signatures. The defined authentication logic can then ultimately be used to trigger transactions on the accounts associated with the keystore entry. These accounts could be on a single network, but also across different networks.

The benefits of using a keystore for account authentication include:

• Security:

  Ensure account authentication is rooted in L1 while still being able to interact on L2s without losing security guarantees

• User Experience:

  With cross-chain smart accounts, interactions across networks could benefit from much smoother user experience, potentially even abstracting away networks from the user entirely

• Privacy:

  Detaching accounts from authentication logic could enable better privacy defaults such as stealth addresses

Keystore Rollup: A solution for cross-chain smart accounts

While a keystore contract could be deployed on Ethereum L1, this would make it inaccessible for a majority of users due to L1's high transaction costs. As a result, Vitalik Buterin proposed the Minimal Keystore Rollup (MKSR), making the keystore its designated rollup.

However, the keystore rollup is not meant as a full EVM Rollup, hosting apps and protocols. Instead, it only allows a very limited amount of operations, particularly storing and updating keys for user accounts. This allows the rollup to be simple, easily auditable and gas-efficient.

The power from a keystore rollup comes when it is paired with cross-chain authentication. For example, accounts on L2s could authenticate against the keystore rollup using zero-knowledge (ZK) storage proofs. This allows the authentication rules on the keystore rollup to be applied to any account on any network, as a long as there is a trustless / trust-minimized way to verify against the keystore rollup.

Looking Ahead

There are currently multiple teams working on initial proof-of-concepts of a keystore rollup, which is expected to be established as a public good implementation without any token.

Notable ones are Scroll and Base, both recently sharing high-level specs on how a minimal keystore rollup could be implemented.

While there are still many technical challenges on the way to a secure and stable keystore rollup, it holds significant potential for enhancing user experience, security, and privacy.

Background

ICYMI, Safe spun out of Gnosis in July 2022 following a vote of GIP-29. Safe proceeded to raise USD 100M in a funding round, and both SafeDAO and its governing token, the Safe Token (SAFE), was born.

From the outset, the SafeDAO, along with extensive community dialogue, have shaped SAFE’s journey. SAFE was made non-transferable from the outset, with the community still able to participate in governance and submit and vote on proposals. The DAO voted on the requirement that several milestones had to be met before transferability could be enabled (SEP #3). Prior to this, (SEP #2) was voted on to delay transferability, to allow for the project to be developed securely while protecting the interests of all ecosystem participants.

The decision on whether to enable token transferability or not has always been driven by this community-envisioned roadmap, fulfilling specific milestones that were decided on through the transparent SafeDAO governance process.

As of Monday March 18, 2024, the last milestone E has been fully ratified!

Governance and Safe{DAO}

SAFE Token holders become stakeholders in the Safe{DAO} governance process by being granted the rights to:

• Submit proposals

• Vote on proposals

• Delegate their voting power to others

Voting power is proportional to the number of tokens held. Anyone can submit proposals, and participation in proposal creation is not contingent on token ownership or transferability. Token holders can furthermore delegate their voting power to others, allowing non-token holders to actively shape SafeDAO governance. To date, token holders have exercised their votes on proposals such as:

What is SAFE?

• Safe builds secure smart account infrastructure. It is the leader in smart account abstraction on Ethereum and the EVM, and recently surpassed $100 billion in value of digital assets secured and has over 7 million active accounts, larger than all of DeFI and comparable to countries GDP.

• Previously called Gnosis Safe, Safe’s contracts are battle-tested and have passed the highest industry standards. The SafeDAO governs the future of Safe and is committed to accelerating the transition of blockchains to smart accounts

What is Token Transferability?

• Token transferability refers to the ability of SafeDAO's governance tokens to be transferred freely. This means calling the unpause method of the token contract (using the SafeSnap module), which would result in the SAFE token becoming transferable. This feature plays a role in enhancing liquidity and governance participation within the ecosystem.

Why was the SAFE token initially non-transferable? Why has token transferability not already been enabled?

• The DAO has chosen a milestone-based approach to ensure careful planning and implementation of key governance events, including transferability. The decision of SEP #2 is well-documented in its thread (here).

• Prioritizing Safe as Critical Infrastructure: Delaying transferability prioritized the development and security of Safe as essential infrastructure for managing digital assets.

• Ensuring DAO Maturity (DAO-product / DAO-market-fit): A non-transferable token helped the DAO establish robust governance processes and focus on building a strong foundation before introducing market dynamics.

What do we need token utility for?

How does the market sentiment influence the timeline for SAFE token transferability?

• The decision to make the SAFE token transferable is based on achieving specific milestones and is driven by community consensus through SafeDAO governance, rather than market trends or past industry events. About Farcaster

Farcaster is an open-source protocol built on Optimism, the L2 secured by Ethereum. The project was kickstarted in 2020 by former Coinbase employees, Dan Romero and Varun Srinivasan and raised $30M.

After an initial invite-only mechanic which saw participation via organic social graphs, Farcaster transitioned to a paid model in 2024, with users paying a one-time sign-up fee of $5 which also acted as a bot-prevention scheme. The sign-up fee includes the rental of storage units that limits users to 5,000 casts for the year.

In the backend, Farcaster has a hybrid onchain/offchain architecture to scale the network. Some data is stored onchain, while others are stored offchain for higher efficiency.

The SocialFi landscape

Interest in the decentralized social media (DeSoc) use case has been building in the public consciousness for a while, with an increasing awareness of how our data and privacy cannot be left under the single control of centralized web2 social apps like Meta, X, and Instagram.

Apart from data breaches, under concerning issues include censorship – how profiles can be shut down or erased – as well as how our content and data can and have been sold to third parties such as advertisers for profit that does not directly accrue back to the user.

As an alternative, social network disruptors such as friend.tech, hey.xyz, Drakula,app and Farcaster are leading the new wave of social disruption, onchain. Does anyone remember Steemit?

The attraction of these deSoc or SocialFi networks is that they also feature interesting and engaging social incentives such as a profile marketplaces and tipping that add a financialized dimension to the social graph. For example on Farcaster, good content is rewarded in DEGEN while for Drakula.app it is BLOOD, which can be traded for DEGEN.

On these dapps, users actually own their content and data, and can easily port their accounts between different clients such as Warpcast or Supercast without deplatforming risk. In fact, anyone can build a Farcaster client, and are encouraged to!

The beauty of an interoperable protocol like Farcaster is that it can interact seamlessly across compatible networks and smart contract protocols, such as ENS, and Safe! Imagine controlling multiple social apps through one unified social ID/account that you own – that’s what Farcaster aims to do.

Farcaster activity has been healthy and growing, with a breakout surge occurring in late January due to the introduction of Farcaster frames, where it saw a 400% increase in one week alone from 5,000 to 24,700 daily active users (DAU) from Jan 28 to Feb 3, 2024.

To date, the protocol has earned close to 800k in revenue.

Frames introduced an influx of new users to Farcaster. Frames allow different kinds of interactions in a user post or ‘cast’. Actions can be anything from polls to voting in DAO governance, minting NFTs, playing games, and making transactions – all within your timeline and without needing you to sign an extra transaction.

“Frames are interactive social media posts. And the best analog to think about is when you use Twitter, you can post a tweet with text, image, video, and then there's one type of post that you can do on Twitter that has some interactivity, and that's a poll, right?...But with a poll, Twitter controls that entire experience and you can't modify it. You can't come up with a new creative way of displaying that poll or another use for those buttons. It's pretty constrained.

With Frames, it gives developers a kind of total canvas within our app to kind of display content and then have interactivity, define what the buttons that will show up next to a frame. And so it's kind of almost like a mini app within an app.”

Safe{Con}: Flagship smart account conference

Safe{Con} is Safe’s flagship smart account conference aiming to bridge gaps and accelerate the transition to smart accounts and self-custodial solutions for ownership.

This year, ownership takes centerstage. In fact, it never left. We are representing new paradigms in digital asset ownership – from new hybrid custody models to AI and identity – connecting the web3 lego pieces together in the aim to onboard 1 Billion Owners to Web3.

Confirmed speakers include Illia Polosukhin, Co-founder of NEAR Protocol, Stefan George, Co-founder of Gnosis Chain, and of course Safe’s own Lukas Schor.

An encore of last year, Safe{Con}2 will find its home again at Spindler & Klatt, an accessible location within walking distance to the centrally located Ostbahnhof, with the spectacular Berlin Spree as its scenic backdrop.

The multi-functional space with room for workshops, a main conference stage, and other activations will again be host to our curated programming including partner booths, dedicated developer space, meeting zones, and more.

Last year’s Safe{Con} Genesis 2023

Our first-ever Safe{Con} in 2023 exceeded our expectations with some 650 participants flowing in on a sunny Sunday during the Berlin Blockchain Week. We had the delight to host over 25 conference speakers such as punk6529 and Sandeep Nailwal of Polygon among many more of our ecosystem partners and friends from projects such as Pimlico, Fileverse, Gnosis Chain, ENS, Monerium to name a few.

From inspiring conference talks to spicy panel discussions, participants were immersed in IRL conversations on the next wave of smart account adoption, while enjoying the freeflow of gelato ice cream, thanks to Gelato network! Other highlights include a dedicated developer lounge, a UX booth and of course, limited edition merch!
