“Many birds fly very fast and disappear in the blink of an eye. We often look for birds in the wild. Sometimes we hear subtle bird calls and can roughly judge what kind they are.”

Kuankuan said that swallows should not be seen in Hangzhou this season and are unlikely to fly back in advance. “They should still spend the winter in Oceania and Southeast Asia. Swallows are usually seen in Hangzhou in March.”

Why do swallows appear on Wufeng island at this time?

Kuan Kuan guessed that they might not have flown away at all and stayed in Hangzhou. “It may be that the temperature has affected the migration, which is not easy to judge at present.”

This bird watching activity is a scientific research project of cooperation between Hangzhou Yuanxiang wild land ecological protection and research center and West Lake Branch of Hangzhou ecological environment bureau. As one of the 29 pilot areas of biodiversity investigation in the province, West Lake District is rich in biological resources. Since August 2021, the West Lake area has carried out a regional biodiversity survey. At present, 578 species of terrestrial higher plants, 112 species of terrestrial vertebrates and 34 species of macrofungi have been investigated. 14 species of national secondary protected animals and 2 species of national secondary protected wild plants have been found. Among them, during the north lake bird research and protection project, the team added 8 new records of birds to the North Lake grassland.
