Mfercoin was created by sartoshi in early 2024. 

However, the project's roots trace back to 2021 when sartoshi first created the mfers NFT collection — a generative collection of simple stick figure characters wearing headphones.

After mysteriously vanishing in 2022 (in a nod to Satoshi himself), sartoshi transferred the mfers contract and royalty share to the community treasury.

That plot twist led to "life death & cryptoart" and other projects in 2023, before culminating in the launch of mfercoin itself — a token designed to connect mfers past, present and future.

The token launched with quintessential mfer energy — no presale, no influencer allocations, just a fixed supply of 1 billion $MFER with 20% distributed to the ecosystem and 80% into liquidity. 

The largest chunk went straight to the community treasury, ensuring future mfers would have their share of the experiment.

The /milo channel on Warpcast is a place for puppy-loving, towel-wearing, scenecoin degenerates.

The channel gives off predominately fun, tongue-in-cheek, based meme vibes. 

However, the $MILO token, and its gamified ecosystem, are far more advanced than your typical memecoin.

History

The $MILO experiment was originally announced by NickySap (@nickysap) in March 2024, with the official launch taking place in August.

But the origin story of $MILO dates back all the way to 2023, when NickySap announced the first iteration of $MILO – $DVDOGE.

Based on Nicky’s real-life dog, Milo, $DVDODGE was launched on the Ethereum network with the intention of exploring the unique dynamics of the memecoin market.

However, as life took over, and interest faded, NickySap put the memes to the side to focus on other projects.

It wasn’t until March, when Nicky discovered Farcaster and the vibrant Scenecoins thriving on Warpcast, that he decided to relaunch his meme experiment.

Scene

Nicky and the Milo team went all-out for the $MILO relaunch. 

The /milo channel obtained over 6k followers before the token launched, thanks in large to the Based Puppy initiative and the MiloWifTowel meme culture.

However, the Milo Scene is just as much about the tech and the experimental nature of the token as it is about the memes.

The token itself has incorporated advanced first-of-its-kind anti-jeet measures to deter whale activity and prevent ‘poison’ actors from infiltrating the ecosystem. 

Its gamified ecosystem centered around the BabyMilo NFT collection (of which 10 are released each week) brings an additional layer of depth to the Milo scene and promotes continued engagement from the community.

Future

1000 BabyMilo NFTs are planned to be released at a rate of 10 per week, meaning the core Milo ‘game’ will continue for at least another 2 years for those who continue to engage with the ecosystem.

There are also multiple in-frame Milo mini-games planned that will benefit (or be exclusive to) BabyMilo holders.

And all BabyMilo NFTs themselves can be staked long-term to earn up to 80k $MILO. 

The community in the /milo channel also continues to thrive, with $MILO giveaways through Rounds contests and a near-infinite Milo meme supply posted regularly.

History

$YOYO was launched by Bas (@reisub.eth) in May 2024 using the Wagimi Fairlaunch token creator.

The token launched with the simplest tokenomics possible — 100% of the supply was minted and put straight into the liquidity pool.

Shortly after the TGE, Bas created the /yoyotoken channel and the yoyotoken.wtf website (where you can find the world's greatest ever Whitepaper)

The /yoyotoken channel quickly grew to over 5k followers, all enthused by the idea of being a part of a project where the price going down is all part of the fun.

Scene

The yoyo scene is one of pure positivity. 

Even with $YOYO's price decline after the initial hype, there was no negativity; just ‘yoyo go down’ memes and good vibes.

Basically, if you're looking to FUD, you’re in the wrong place. Yoyo is about celebrating the bad times just as much (if not more) than the good times!

Future

The /yoyotoken channel remains one of the most active on Warpcast and will likely continue to thrive as long as Bas continues his involvement with the project. 

He is currently running Rounds competitions in the channel where anyone sharing fun media can receive $YOYO rewards.

The /gloom channel on Warpcast is all about feeling down, complaining, and (as you’d assume) unfiltered gloom.

It is intentionally left unmoderated to facilitate the gloomiest vibe possible, and provides followers with a unique scene unlike any other channel on Warpcast. 

Eternal gloom is the priority, so (initially) no associated Scenecoin was launched by the channel creators or the community.

However, an unlikely cast from Ethereum founder Vitalik Buterinin the channel led to a chain of events that spawned one of the most successful Scenecoins to date – $GLOOM. 

History

$GLOOM was launched by @bixbite in February 2024.

In a late night/early morning experiment, she decided to launch the token mentioned in Vitalik’s cast for real.

The key factor that made $GLOOM stand out from other memecoins on Base at the time was the fact it was a “reflection token.”

Whenever a $GLOOM transaction took place, 1% of the transaction value was charged as a tax and redistributed amongst all $GLOOM holders.

This mechanism helped $GLOOM gain traction early on, and quickly propelled it from an experimental token to an established player on the Farcaster memecoin stage.

$GLOOM, and its separate, dedicated /gloomtoken channel has since expanded to over 4k members.

The token migrated from its reflection token origins to a more standard ERC20 token to expand its functionality and accessibility.

And @bixbite (with the help of the community) launched Gloomers, the exclusive $GLOOM ecosystem NFT collection, across the Base, Solana, and Optimism networks.

Scene

The scene of the $GLOOM token is a strange combination of the /gloom channels perverse negativity, combined with the vibrant enthusiasm of /gloomtoken.

Ultimately, there needs to be some positivity and excitement for a token to succeed as $GLOOM has. 

And this balance is where $GLOOM finds its scene — a community of dread-filled people creating the gloomiest creations possible, while having fun doing it.

The recent Gloom on-chain affiliates campaign also seems to have taken over the /gloomtoken feed (which actually perpetuates the gloom).

Future

Ironically, the future of the ecosystem dedicated to existential gloominess does indeed look bright. 

The first “Gloomiverse” product (the gloomy “Onchain Affiliates” program) launched on June 1st. 

Users who share the Gloomers affiliate frame earn 10% of the ETH used to mint a Gloomer NFT through that frame.


Beyond the affiliate program, the Gloomiverse is set to continue to spread its gloomy ways. 

New gloomy products from @bixbite seem to be dropping every other week, and the $GLOOM community persists in turning Vitalik’s self-defeating prophecy into one of the most fulfilling scenes on Base.

Farcaster power user and The Haberdashery (Degen DAO) founder @purp has self-launched his token, $PURP.

It is not the first of its kind (@animated’s $AM token pre-dates it), but the hype organically generated around it foreshadows the next stage in the Scenecoin evolution.

Anyone with a decent following (and even those without) will be looking to launch their own “personal ecosystem” token that represents their brand and rewards their community and supporters.

History

$PURP was launched by @purp on May 26th using Basecamp – a tool to launch Base network tokens directly on Uniswap.

@purp had publicly stated he had no plans to launch a token just a month before the $PURP launch.

However, on May 25th, @purp’s simple (almost troll-like) cast of “$Purp Likely??” in the /degen channel revealed he may have had a change of heart.

This cast was followed up a few hours later by the most nonchalant (read: based) TGE announcement ever.

The announcement triggered an influx of attention from the degenerates, and the eyes of the Farcaster scene were suddenly on @purp (not for the first time) and the $PURP token.

@purp would reveal post-launch the reason he went back on his “no-token” policy:

“Only reason I've chosen to do a coin is cause Basecamp is sudo team. I said a month or so ago I had no intention to launch a coin and meant it, but good projects should be used” - @purp

Scene

$PURP is a Founder-token, $AM is a Creator-token, $JENNER* (was advertized to be) a Celebrity-token.

They all have different labels, but essentially serve the same purpose – to represent the personal brand of their creator and act as a tool for them to benefit their followers (or whoever they want).

The Scene of these tokens is directly related to the personality and status of the person they represent.

In the case of $PURP, @purp is a builder. The scene for $PURP seems intended as a builder-focused (although @purp is still keeping things vague).

However, @purp’s social presence, hussle lifestyle, and sense of humor mean he will attract non-builders to $PURP.

Basically, if you vibe with @purp, think he’s the kind of bloke you’d get along with in real life, then $PURP is your scene.

Future

@purp has ties to many major communities within the Farcaster ecosystem and beyond. 

He’s already stated his intentions to utilize $PURP to “flex” his connections (part of the fun of creating the token).

What this exactly means is still unknown, but we can speculate that we will likely start seeing $PURP pop up as an option for more products around the Base ecosystem soon.

Unlike the flashing lights of memecoin Twitter or the noisy mess of telegram or discord, the social app's unique channel-based design has cultivated a memecoin culture where participation isn’t solely driven by the financial incentive of “price goes higher.”

The most successful memecoins on Farcaster are the ones with no reliance on a particular “team” or “utility.” They are the ones created as “Culture Coins,” “Community Coins,” or “Social Coins.”  

They aren't just about the memes; they are about the “Scene” they belong to.

The Original Scenecoins (Pre-Scene)

Although the phrase “Scenecoin” was only coined recently (credit to @joshcrnls), the Scenecoin culture on Warpcast has existed since the app's inception.

An early example was the /spam channel and their $SPAM token — a simple proof of concept designed to reward users for casts on Farcaster. 

Users would get 5 $SPAM for every unique cast containing the word "$SPAM.” it was a simple memecoin with a fun airdrop mechanism.

But in $SPAM (and other similar tokens at the time), you could already see the seedlings of the Scenecoin culture beginning to sprout.

The community took to $SPAM differently than most memecoins. The vibe (although ultimately short-lived) was similar to that of the Dogecoin Reddit from 2014 – it wasn’t about trying to pump the coin; it was genuinely about the culture, community, and fun.

Some other “pre-Scene” Farcaster memecoins included $WOWOW, $FARTS, and $POINTS (the pre-curser to $DEGEN).

Setting the Scene (Degen)

As the initial flash-in-the-pan Farcaster memecoins eventually faded into the background, a novel wave of Scenecoins (or Scenecoins 2.0) began to emerge.

The most notable is, of course, $DEGEN - the token that has now become synonymous with the Farcaster ecosystem.

DEGEN enabled a points system that would allow Warpcast users to reward (or “tip”) others with $DEGEN for posting quality content. 

It served no other purpose initially, but the /degen channel and $DEGEN grew to represent the Farcaster degenerate mindset. 

It set the standard for what Farcaster memecoins (read Scenecoins) should be — no artificial hype train, no fake utility, just a token to represent, and be used by a community of like-minded degenerates.

The First True Scenecoin (Higher)

Although hindsight tells us $DEGEN was the first Scenecoin to gain large-scale attention, it was (and is) labeled as a memecoin and nothing more.

It wasn’t until a new channel popped up in March 2024 that people began to realize that $DEGEN, and other Farcaster memecoins, fit into a separate category altogether. 

This new channel was the now iconic /higher. 

/higher was intended as a conceptual cultural experiment. A completely community-owned brand created to represent an “optimistic state of mind.” 

Everything from the logo, website, blog posts and even merchandise were all community-created.

This channel and its associated token, $HIGHER, established the point of difference between regular memecoins and Farcaster’s “Scene” memecoins. 

Scenecoin Takeover

After the success of $HIGHER, a wave of new Scenecoins and their affiliated channels began to arise on Warpcast (we will spotlight all of them on /scenecoin over the coming weeks):

  • $ENJOY: The (unofficial) Scenecoin for the Zora network.

  • $GLOOM: The Scenecoin for those who like being gloomy, whining, and complaining.

  • $DOGINME: The dog Scenecoin for those who have the “Dog in them.” 

  • $STREAMZ: The Scenecoin aimed at the music community.

  • $BLEU: The satirical Scenecoin for those who think modern memecoins take themselves too seriously.

The Future of Scenecoins

The next evolution of Scenecoins (Scenecoins 3.0) will likely be the creation of more refined and creator-driven Scenecons.

Warpcast is filled with builders, artists, writers, and creatives of all sorts. Each one with a following (and even those without) will likely create their own Scenecoin to represent their community.

LeBleuElefant ($BLEU) — a new token representing a blue elephant doing… that — is the latest Scenecoin making waves on Farcaster.

It is the perfect manifestation of everything that is so wrong, yet wonderfully right, about the current degenerate crypto scene. And it is undoubtedly deserving of its place as our first ever /scenecoin spotlight.

History

$BLEU was launched by popular Warpcast builder @agust on May 9th, 2024, using a novel in-frame token launcher made by @wagmi1337.eth.

Agust created the token to test out the token launcher. There was no intention of token surviving more than a day, let alone creating any utility.

However, thanks to the unforeseen meme-ablity of an autofellatious blue elephant, the token took off.

New Bleu memes began rolling in, Elefant NFTs started popping up, and the community rallied behind agust’s new creation.

After the initial buzz wore off, the price of $BLEU (expectedly) dipped. Many thought this would be the end for the token – just another flash-in-the-pan joke coin. 

But while the price plateaued, agust and the Bleu community were just getting started.

Agust started a /lebleuelefant channel (which currently boasts over 1.4k followers), and the community evolved to create a unique “Scene” culture and vibrant ecosystem around LeBleu.

Scene

The scene that evolved in the Bleu community can be summed up by this eloquent cast by Farcaster OG and new $BLEU holder @keccers.eth.

BLEU is what almost all memecoins (and Scenecoins) are underneath – an Elephant sucking its own dick.

Although unintentional, agust managed to create a Scenecoin that perfectly satires the current state of the degenerate memecoin landscape.

Every memecoin is trying to be cool, trying to sell you an idea or unique way of life.

$BLEU knows your true way of life would be doing exactly one thing…. if only you could reach.

Future

$BLEU has three distinct features that mix to make it the ultimate Scenecoin:

  1. A genuinely funny meme to draw you in

  2. A distinct brand that is relatable yet unique.

  3. A lighthearted (yet dedicated) community that makes you feel included.

Combine this with agust’s continued community initiatives and engagement, and $BLEU could quickly become one of the premier Scenecoins on Farcaster.
