Recently, an unfortunate incident occurred involving the compromise of the SNRK deployer wallet and Houdini sale contract. We want to provide you with an update on what transpired and the actions we took to address the situation.

During the incident, the funds from the SNRK deployer wallet were illicitly transferred to another address. The attacker then proceeded to bridge the funds from zkSync Era to Ethereum Mainnet & Binance Smart Chain using the Celer Bridge, eventually withdrawing them through the FixedFloat exchange.

Upon discovering the compromise, immediate steps were taken to mitigate the impact. Our team swiftly initiated contact with the FixedFloat Exchange, working diligently to freeze the funds belonging to the attacker. Additionally, emergency withdrawals for unstaking were enabled to safeguard the remaining assets.

In our thorough investigation, we examined various possibilities, including the compromise of the private key or a potential bug in the zkSync blockchain. While the exact cause is yet to be determined, we believe that the incident was a result of phishing attacks targeting the MetaMask wallet through bridge sites. No computers were hacked or infected with viruses during this incident.

Ensuring Security and Trust:

Understanding the importance of security and the need for precautionary measures, both the Snark and Houdini teams immediately prioritized strengthening our systems. We devoted considerable time to clearing and rebuilding our entire infrastructure, ensuring that all systems and contracts were reconstructed from scratch. The Houdini Smart contract, comprising over 50-60 individual smart contracts, was diligently rebuilt to enhance its security and integrity.

The smart contract had a hard code of 50 ETH as the hard cap, meaning that when it reached 50 ETH, it would not take any transactions after that, and it would just reject all incoming transactions.

After the 50 ETH hard cap, there were a lot of pending transactions, and the website registered it at 270% overfilled, causing some confusion among investors. But when the transactions stopped pending, it just rejected the rest past 50 ETH.

Despite the initial hiccups, the first IDO has been a success and the Snark Launchpad team is already working on improving the process for future sales.
