Joe Pillitteri has spent the last three decades serving in senior leadership roles for tremendously successful companies. Additionally, for more than a decade he’s consulted for a wide variety of organizations spanning Fortune 500 juggernauts and small business startups.

Now, he’s taking his talents to UREEQA as its new Vice-President of Operations.

It’s very new territory for the former SAS director of consulting services and Maple Leaf Foods director of sales and marketing, but one he’s enthusiastic about — partly because of the trajectory of the crypto and digital content industries, but more specifically because he feels strongly about the use cases UREEQA is presenting to those communities.

“The blockchain space is brand new to me, other than as a passive observer for the last few years, and I’m excited to explore it more deeply,” Pillitteri said. “But the approach that UREEQA has taken by putting an asset behind the NFT really excites me. It dispels that notion that crypto has no asset value, because in this case it very much does.”

Pillitteri specializes in bridging opportunities between companies and clients and in building high-performance teams to optimize an organization’s investments, but beyond that he’s considered a forward-thinking leader with a strong heart.

Put it all together and you can see why he’s an ideal fit for UREEQA, which prioritizes rights and protections for Creators above all else.

“At this point in my career,” he said, “I wanted to take something on that made me feel good and this is a perfect spot to do that.”

Pillitteri knows a lot of artists. He’s seen the struggles associated with creating and protecting original work, and he has gained a particular appreciation for the mutual respect and admiration that exists among Creators. It’s all part of the big picture for him.

“UREEQA’s found a way to protect Creators in a world where they are not adequately protected,” he said. “As a result, there’s also an element of goodness for mankind in this project, and I think that’s really cool.”

He also sees the crypto space, NFTs and UREEQA’s validation and protection becoming significantly more mainstream as a future alternative to centralized, tangible institutions, and he’s energized by the fact he can and will play a role in that process.

“Joe Pillitteri is a proven leader and the epitome of a people person,” UREEQA CEO Harsch Khandelwal said. “His experience is invaluable, and we look forward to benefiting from his guidance on everything from client relations to project management to sales. We certainly share a vision, and his addition to the team only reinforces the idea that we insist on teaming up with the best the business world has to offer.”

Pillitteri’s first order of business? He says he is determined to shift even more of the focus to clients and Creators “in a way that is repeatable and secure” and he isn’t prepared to put that on the backburner. He wants to implement that strategy in the next 90 days.

About UREEQAThe UREEQA platform strives to protect Creators’ work, their rights and their revenue by harnessing the power of blockchain technology.

Established in Canada in 2020, UREEQA will modernize the inefficient and bureaucratic systems currently in place for copyright, patent, industrial design and trademark protection. By building a robust and compelling Package of Proof for source creative work, UREEQA only mints Validated NFTs to represent creative rights. This helps keep buyers safe by giving them confidence that the work they are purchasing was minted by the smart contract approved by the Creator of the work and is therefore authentic.

UREEQA provides value and opportunities for its Creators, Validators and Tokenholders via URQA, the token at the heart of the UREEQA ecosystem.

For more information on UREEQA and upcoming announcements please visit our website UREEQA, join our Telegram channel here, and follow us on Twitter here.

Disclaimer:Statements in this article, including any statements relating to UREEQA’s future plans and objectives or expected results, may include forward-looking statements.

I first learned about Web3 in November of 2021. After seeing what felt like every smart person I follow on Twitter mention it, I figured I should probably figure out what’s up.

I started out by listening to this pod episode with Chris Dixon and then listened to Tim Ferriss’ episode with Balaji. That episode specifically, blew my mind away and I became determined that Web3 is going to be a huge part of the future.

Being in ClimateTech I kept asking myself the question of how Crypto and ClimateTech might intersect. To me this is a big question, especially because on the surface Crypto Energy consumption seems directly opposed to the goal of the ClimateTech sector, to reduce carbon emissions.

However, tied closely with the ClimateTech space is the ESG industry. The ESG space is all about transparency and doing the right thing. This bleeds over into ClimateTech naturally because reversing climate change is only possible when we all work together and show that we are truly making an impact and not greenwashing.

To me, this goal of transparency from the ESG/ClimateTech space lined up really well with the Blockchain ideas of transparency and sovereignty. In particular, the way that Blockchain is focused on putting power into the hands of individuals, the same way ClimateTech and ESG seek to create a more equitable world and workplace for everyone. This includes those often exploited by big corporations or governments at the early phases of the supply chain.

While I’m not an expert on Crypto/Blockchain by any means, here are a couple of things I’m thinking might happen.

I may have used the wrong technical terms here in a few instances since I’m still learning and am by no means a technical person when it comes to the Blockchain but these are the things I’ve been thinking about.

I’d be curious to hear what your thoughts are about the possible intersection of ClimateTech and Crypto. If anyone has resources to share please link them in your reply.

Overall, I’m really excited for the future of both of these technologies as I believe that they will do incredible things for humanity at scale.

If you’re interested, I’m now writing on Substack as well, mostly behind a paywall where I am going to be writing weekly posts about what I’ve learned / what has happened / principles I’m thinking about in that week. I’m putting it behind a paywall so I can just write and be real without worrying too much about having everything perfect because I don’t have an editor or time to be super picky. You can check my substack out here.

My this Intro to ESG| Follow My Writing | Support the Dream | Join Medium | CleanTechies the Newsletter | CleanTechies the Slack channel | The Podcast on Apple Podcasts / Spotify / wherever you get your podcasts |Connect On LinkedIn | Tweet Me

Here’s to inspiring ourselves and others to do work we love.

Ethereum is a cryptocurrency network developed by Russian-Canadian programmer Vitalik Buterin and launched in 2015. Like Bitcoin, it runs on blockchain technology but has several advanced features that provide added functionality beyond simply peer-to-peer digital cash. Buterin has stated in the past that while Bitcoin does perform this function well, the comparison to Ethereum would be akin to comparing a calculator to a smartphone.

The key elements that distinguish Ethereum from Bitcoin are its ability to support smart contracts and allow developers to build decentralized applications on the network. These additions have led many to call Ethereum “programmable money” and have ushered in a new age of technology in finance.

In this article, we’ll discuss these features along with a brief explanation of how Ethereum functions, its history, market analysis, and future potential.

Blockchain is a type of distributed ledger technology (DLT) that uses advanced encryption techniques to store data in a secure, transparent, and immutable structure. While it has many other use cases, the most popular is serving as the foundation upon which the majority of cryptocurrencies are built.

Cryptocurrencies like Bitcoin typically use a consensus method called Proof of Work (PoW) that supports the blockchain and creates currency via the process of ‘mining’. Miners are individual participants that provide computing power to the network by running and validating blockchain transactions on their computers. This has the combined benefits of securing the network while also periodically producing the native currency of the blockchain, which in the case of Ethereum called is Ether (ETH).

While Ethereum originally started out using Proof of Work to create Ether, it has since evolved to a different consensus method called Proof of Stake (PoS) that uses existing ETH tokens to continue supporting the network.

Ethereum runs on a software platform called the Ethereum Virtual Machine (EVM) upon which developers can create decentralized applications (dApps). These little programs are relatively simple to create and anybody is welcome to take part in building them using a simple programming language called Solidity.

The EVM uses a separate token called ‘gas’ which users must pay for with ETH tokens in order to run transactions on dApps. This process creates a kind of decentralized economy within the EVM which helps to both finance and secure the network. Since transactions require a certain amount of gas to run, this cost help to keep operations to a manageable and non-threatening size.

Ether is the live-blood that powers all Ethereum applications and functions and gives the platform monetary value. Developers that wish to build on the Ethereum network need to purchase ETH in order to develop and support their dApps. External users also need to purchase ETH if they wish to interact with dApps built on Ethereum.

ETH tokens grow in value over time as the network expands, so they are also a valuable investment option. Retail investors can buy ETH tokens on several popular cryptocurrency exchanges and store them safely on digital wallets. Some apps even allow effortless micro-investing in Ether by rounding off your purchases to the nearest dollar and automatically investing the remaining cents. (Bamboo link here?)

In 2017, Ethereum exploded in popularity when users discovered they could easily build their own cryptocurrency tokens on the platform using its ERC-20 protocol. This led to a surge in Initial Coin Offerings (ICO): fundraising projects that allowed users to invest in cryptocurrencies before they launched, similar to how an Initial Public Offering (IPO) works in traditional stock markets.

Although many of these projects failed to find widespread support, some became very successful and eventually migrated to independent blockchains of their own. In this way, Ethereum has been a key player in the growth and evolution of the cryptocurrency sector.

With the launch of Ethereum, smart contracts quickly became a hot topic in the crypto community. Smart contracts on the Ethereum blockchain can be written up, saved to the network and programmed to activate when certain conditions are met. Unlike legal contracts in real-life, smart contracts don’t require expensive third-party intermediation from lawyers.

The immutable and transparent nature of blockchain ensures that all parties involved in the contract can’t change or corrupt the process once initiated. While some of the most powerful functions of smart contracts are yet to be realized, Ethereum developers have already begun using them to great success in a multitude of applications.

Bitcoin also supports simple smart contracts, but they have limited functionality, aren’t Turing complete, and require multiple signatures to activate.

Decentralized Applications (dApps) make up the core functionality of Ethereum and give the network its strongest advantage over less advanced cryptocurrencies. Since Ethereum is a ‘stateful’ platform, dApps can store memory in various ways and smart contracts can be reactivated and continue a process from a previous position. This makes it possible to build applications that store user progress and account info on the blockchain, like games.

In 2017, a digital collectibles game called CryptoKitties became the first wildly popular dApp, so much so that it almost crashed the network. This signaled the need for further innovation and sparked the development of ETH 2.0, which recently launched in early 2021.

From early 2020, decentralized finance (DeFi) apps become all the rage on Ethereum, offering ways for users to safely lend and borrow cryptocurrency without the need for a bank or broker. The concept of DeFi is still relatively new and there are still some teething issues to overcome but early projects have proved highly successful. One of the most popular, Uniswap (UNI), has enjoyed spectacular gains this year, growing ten times in value since December.

DeFi essentially allows any cryptocurrency holder to become their own bank without the need for traditional licensing. However, the lack of oversight and regulation makes it a bit of a ‘digital wild west’ in finance. One popular activity it has given rise to is ‘Yield Farming’, where users dedicate their cryptocurrency to liquidity pools that pay out an annual percentage yield (APY) — often as high as 15 percent.

The latest craze driven by Ethereum-based applications is non-fungible tokens (NFTs). Like cryptocurrency coins, the tokens only exist digitally on the blockchain and don’t have any physical value other than that which people attribute to them. However, unlike cryptocurrency tokens which are all identical, each NFT is unique. The digital cats collected in Cryptokitties were one of the first examples of NFTs, although the term was almost unheard of back then.

NFTs have become particularly popular in the digital art world, where they are used to attribute ownership of an art piece. Like owning an actual piece of art, some NFTs are very rare and are expected to rise in value over time. Musicians like Kings of Leon, Mike Shinoda of Linken Park, and rapper Post Malone are using NFTs to facilitate new ways of interacting with their fans

Ethereum is the second-highest valued cryptocurrency by market cap, worth $400 billion in May 2021. The individual coin price of ether (ETH) rose from below $1 in 2015 to a high of nearly $3,500 in mid 2021.

As you can see, Ethereum is far more complex than Bitcoin, which means it can offer a wider range of functionality but also faces several more challenges. Where Bitcoin gains its value from its simplicity and immutability, Ethereum developers are constantly working to update and improve the network.

Bitcoin benefits from a larger user base and a longer time frame which gives it stability and resilience, whereas Ethereum benefits from meaningful advances in innovation and technology. The two assets together make up a well-balanced and diversified cryptocurrency investment portfolio.

In the late 90s I was working at Xerox (yes that Xerox) developing diagnostic systems for a new line of Digital Copier/Printers. Pets.com had just launched. Web 1.0 startups were minting millionaires almost every week. Network-connected devices, primarily PC towers and bulky laptops tethered via ethernet cables, had moved from the fringe to the mainstream.

Wifi was just invented and it didn’t work very well. It was also not widely available. Let that sink in. I’m 44 years old and survived adolescence and early adulthood with no access to reliable Wifi.

Then one day in 1999, amidst the frenzy of Y2K, I went to lunch with a friend of mine at Xerox, a Jamaican guy named Kevin. Kevin was an electrical engineer and he told me about this even newer thing recently announced at COMDEX called Bluetooth. It was going to be so cool, he told me. Seamless exchange of information between devices! Just imagine the possibilities!

Meanwhile I was spending my days connecting custom cabling to newly assembled digital printers to transfer images over a SCSI (pronounced “scuzzy”) connection to analyze in a software package I was maintaining.

It broke all the time. I really didn’t believe something that claimed to enable frictionless movement of data between devices in close proximity could really work. As a consequence, I failed to see what was possible with it. I saw the potential of Wifi, but when it came to Bluetooth I made a bold claim: “That idea is stupid. What’s the point of having such a limited range to connect devices 1 to 1? What would that even be good for?”

In time, I realized my error. I had taken a direct experience with an inferior technology and assumed that this new way of doing things was going to simply create a wireless version of my wired connection. I wouldn’t consider the possibility that it could be better and also enable many more uses.

Bluetooth isn’t perfect. I still scowl at my various Airpods and speakers when they don’t connect fast enough or randomly switch connections to some other device. Bluetooth headsets also spawned hated characters like this guy from Breaking Bad (we’ve all felt the inner rage Walt is suppressing in this scene):

But I also can grab my phone and jump in my car (using my phone’s bluetooth connection as a key) and stream Spotify to my car’s speakers to have lunch with Kevin, take photos and Airdrop them to him before heading home. I am also known for losing things and place Tiles in my wallet and on other essential items that not only I can find, but anyone else who uses the Tile app can signal if they come within Bluetooth range (without even knowing they have done it). I’m sure I have left out a bunch of other uses or ideas, but the point is, I was wrong.

I was also wrong about crypto, but that’s a story for tomorrow…follow for more.
