Your brother-in law Steve is going through a rough patch. He lost his job in September. By December he’s really hurting. Steve swallows his pride and asks you for a loan to get through the holidays.

Financially, you’re doing alright. You just got a nice Christmas bonus and lend him the bread.

Steve roughs it through the winter with the help of your loan. By early spring he gets a new job.

April, May, June go by…Steve seems to be back on his feet but you don’t see a dime. You complain to your wife, she says he’s still recovering and to be patient.

On the fourth of July you go to your in-laws house for a family BBQ. Steve pulls up in a brand new truck. What the fuck Steve!? He bought a new truck without paying you back a single cent?

You start sucking down Yuenglings like they’re pop corn chicken, stewing in the corner of the yard, pretending like you’re watching the kids while muttering about that cheap, swindling bastard Steve.

Eventually your wife walks over and asks what’s wrong? And you say, “it’s bullshit Steve bought a new truck, I lent him that money six goddamn months ago!”

She says, relax, he’ll pay it back, he’s just getting back on his feet and you’re like, “he’s been getting back on his feet for the past six months, he’s screwing us!” And she’s like, he needs the truck for work — but you know that’s bullshit, nobody needs a NEW TRUCK for work.

You fester in the corner of the BBQ, watching that motherfucker Steve, laughing, spitting out chunks of hot dogs like a slob.

You can’t stand it! “We’re going. Get in the car kids!”

Everyone is like, “Woah, what’s wrong with Jeff?” (your name is Jeff) But you just can’t stand to see Steve and his dumb brand new truck parked in the driveway anymore.

You start driving home and the kids are whining because you made them leave before the fireworks. They start fighting because their devices ran out of batteries and they’re bored. Your wife stares out the window, shaking her head.

You grip the wheel and smash down the gas because you did something nice and everyone is treating you like you’re the asshole!

One of the kids starts bawling and you turn back to scold her brother Tyler for stirring up shit!

As your head is turned, your wife screams, “JEFF!” When you look back at the road you see traffic is stopped dead and you’re careening straight toward a gas truck. You slam on the brakes and turn the wheel, totally losing control of the vehicle. The car flips straight into the gas truck. It explodes. The last sight you on this earth is your family engulfed in flames as your last spite-filled breath leaves your sour lungs.

If only you had used blockchain.

Let’s go back to December when everyone is alive and well.

Let’s look at today’s solution: Steve asks for money. You have a lawyer draw up a contract and come July, if Steve is buying trucks instead of paying you back, you could take him to court. Hopefully you get back more than you spend in legal fees and don’t cause a bitter grudge in the family that lasts until your generation is 6 feet under. Not ideal.

Here’s how this might work in blockchain world.

Steve asks for money. You say, “sure Steve, let’s go to a peer to peer lending platform and set up a smart contract real quick.” You both agree on the terms, put your crypto wallets into the smart contract and you transfer the money over to Steve.

The smart contract might say something like this, “whenever Steve receives any money in his wallet, 5% of that money will go to you (Jeff) until the balance of the loan is paid off.”

You don’t have to ask for the money back from Steve and Steve doesn’t need to do anything to transfer the money back to you. It just happens with the magic of blockchain. Nobody needs to keep track of anything; the money will be repaid programmatically over time as Steve gets back on his feet.

If Steve were to win the lottery or receive a settlement because his boss dropped a two ton granite slab on his toe, you would get all your money back the moment Steve gets paid, provided your loan is 5% or less of the sum payment.

Friction-less, fiscally responsible automation of loan management! No courts, accounting or badgering of in-laws are needed.

This blockchain solution is likely years away. It depends on mass adoption of crypto as well as crypto wallets that people don’t/can’t discard willy nilly — which may be the case if crypto wallets are integrated with government operations — but that’s an article for a different day.

Until then, drive safe!

Let’s not let our generation get left behind. Just because we are older does not mean we can’t stay current with our world.

Everywhere you look crypto is relevant. Join me in becoming more relevant with our money and savings. Investment is good, and I am in many stocks. But if you are in the stock market you know that crypto is all over it and just because we have grey hair it does not mean we have to do it like our parents!

I just learned about a DeFi project called DRIP. Read on below to find out more!

I am very excited about this great opportunity. Think of it like getting in the IPO of Apple, Berkshire Hathaway , Amazon ,Google, Booking Holdings. We are so early, this might be our chance. Let’s take it together!

DRIP is a DeFi project that can provide passive income. You purchase your DRIP and deposit it into the faucet, then the faucet pays you 1% per day every single day in new DRIP tokens. You can choose to Hydrate (compound) your daily 1% back into your deposit so you receive more tomorrow, or you can choose to claim your earnings back out. That is an extremely simplified version, but hits the highlights.

Take note, your initial deposit is locked, and you can only claim it out through the hydrate/claim method — as opposed to being able to pull your initial deposit back out at any time. This is one small part of what helps create sustainability in the project.

I am part of the Cryptozoa DRIP team. We are a global community of DRIP enthusiasts who are welcoming and helpful. We converse on our own private Telegram group where we share DRIP tips, strategies, breaking news, and more. If you would like to join in the conversation, please join the Cryptozoa team (by getting into DRIP and using my Buddy address above), and then head over to the Cryptozoa Team Gateway. Make sure and tell them that Nana Judy sent you! They can help you get going with DRIP if you need it, or answer any questions you have as well.

Nothing in this article is to be construed as investment advice. Neither the author nor the publication takes any responsibility or liability for any investments, profits or losses you may incur as a result of this information. The article may contain affiliate links.

This is a great article I came across that explains it well:

www.sohamkamani.com

(Please do read this article since I don’t cover this in the post)

Where it fell apart for me was actually implementation, since the keys created were in-memory and ephemeral. I’m writing this with code samples that you can run to:

Here’s the Github repository:

github.com

You don’t need to npm i as there are no dependencies, and the crypto module comes with node.

You should now have a file called data_to_encrypt.txt in the project root. This is some arbitrary data created using Node.js’s crypto module. If you’re interested, have a look here: https://github.com/nkhil/node-crypto/blob/master/src/rsa/create-data-to-encrypt.js

Crypto’s rise in popularity has some government officials suggesting its use in organized crime.

To start off, we must understand that criminal activity occurs no matter the funding source. Whether it’s dollars or Bitcoin, criminals are opportunists and will use whatever suits their needs. With that said, let’s explore the possibility of crypto being used in the commission of crimes. One recent case shows that cryptocurrency can be used for criminal activities. An Akron, Ohio resident, Larry Dean Harmon, was arrested for money laundering. The Department of Justice said that he and his “tumbling” operation had transferred $300 million worth of bitcoin. They partnered with an online marketplace known as AlphaBay, which had a long history of dealing drugs and other illegal activities. This investigation has led to the prosecution of dozens of people.

The FBI is now investigating cryptocurrencies, including Bitcoin. According to reports by the Digital Citizens Alliance, cryptocurrencies are becoming an enabler of criminal activity. Europol has recommended regulating virtual assets. The US Department of Justice has unsealed a superseding indictment that details six people’s criminal activity using cryptocurrencies. They were also accused of cash smuggling, casinos, and front companies. In one case, a single individual even used cryptocurrency to bribe a U.S. Department of State official.

While this is still not enough to prove that cryptocurrency is being used for criminal purposes, it shows that cryptocurrency crimes are disrupting an otherwise beneficial technology. The WannaCry crypto-worm encrypted NHS computers, demanding a ransom in cryptocurrency. The Covid-19 pandemic is also forcing criminals to continue their offences in the digital space. It’s clear that in some cases, cryptocurrency is being used for illicit purposes.

A recent study cited by the University of London supports the theory suggesting cryptocurrency is used for criminal purposes. The study found that cryptocrime is increasingly common, although the exact numbers are not yet known. The vast majority of cryptocurrency activities were conducted through darknet markets. However, there was a recent peer-reviewed study that cites the emergence of a cryptocurrency industry. These studies show that the use of cryptocurrency has increased and the amount of crime is increasing.

The use of cryptocurrency has increased dramatically in recent years. There were approximately 280 Bitcoin addresses used in a $1.3 billion heist last year. These accounts are connected to a variety of online brokerages. Each address represents a location on a virtual network. The digital currency is sent to other addresses in the network. For example, if a person uses an email account that is owned by a government official, it is likely that the criminal will use it to send a ransom.

This technology has created an environment that is unimaginable without the use of physical cash. This means that criminals can easily hide their true identity. With that said, it’s important to bear in mind that while fiat currency has unique identifiers, it lacks the the very thing that makes crypto unique: an immutable transaction history. While criminals can shield their identifies through cryptocurrency by virtue of its environment of anonymity, the transactions themselves are publicly viewable by anyone and unchangeable.

The majority of cryptocurrency is not used for criminal activities. In fact, in 2019, criminologists estimated that about 2.1% of all cryptocurrency transactions were related to criminal activity. That number has decreased dramatically since then, and the number of criminals using cryptocurrency is dropping year after year. Therefore, it is unlikely that this type of activity will grow in the future. The crime that is most prevalent in cryptocurrency is cryptojacking. This type of malware can be installed on a computer of an innocent user.

This type of crime has increased in recent years. A Twitter account that is popular with criminals can easily be hacked. A high profile Twitter account was hacked in 2020, and the hacker sent a tweet to a Bitcoin wallet that had $100,000 worth of Bitcoins. These types of crimes are now possible thanks to the fast and irreversible nature of crypto transactions. These new crimes have been made possible by the speed and anonymity of cryptocurrencies.

While it cannot be denied that cryptocurrency can be used in the commission of criminal activities, the occurrence rate is extremely low: far lower than with fiat currency.
