Here’s his short explanation.

“I made your atomic matrix SLIGHTLY lighter than air”

So, Jerry would just float away — but wait! In addition, the introduction of zero-knowledge technology has marked a significant leap in this transition, providing both enhanced scalability and efficiency in making transactions on the blockchain.

zkLink, in particular, is at the forefront of this innovation by leveraging its Layer 3 solutions and zero-knowledge technology to build and integrate DEXs. Integrating DEXs with zkLink Nova’s Layer 3 facilitates a secure, scalable, and liquid trading environment — and building DEXs with zkLink Nexus allows for high-performance functionality.

From TradFi exchanges to DeFi exchanges, and now to zkLink’s Layer 3 innovations, we’re witnessing a transformative period where the principles of traditional finance are blended with the advantages of decentralized protocols in shaping the future of cryptocurrency trading and liquidity.

In this article, we’ll:

introduce the concept of traditional order books utilized by TradFi;

introduce the DEX models utilized in crypto such as order books and AMMs;

delve into the details of DeFi DEXs and analyze the current state of the market;

assess how zero-knowledge technology is being used in the space;

guide builders on the benefits of developing and integrating DEXs on zkLink; and

demonstrate how Layer 3s can take DEXs to the next level of adoption.

TradFi: Introduction To Order Books

What Is An Order Book?

An Order Book is a real-time ledger that acts as a digital marketplace for all active buy and sell orders for a specific asset on an exchange. It’s an essential tool that displays the current supply and demand levels, which allows traders to make informed decisions based on factors such as market trends and liquidity.

At its core, an order book consists of three elements: the bid side, the ask side, and the order time priority. The bid side showcases the current buy orders, reflecting what traders are willing to pay for the asset, while the ask side displays the current sell orders, indicating the prices sellers are requesting. The difference between the highest bid price and the lowest ask price is known as the spread, a key metric in market analysis. Each order has a size or amount, which refers to the total units of an asset looking to be traded at a specific price. Order time priority records the time priority of all the transactions that have been put up to ensure their timely and proper execution.

The order book plays a pivotal role in trade execution strategies. Understanding and effectively utilizing the order book is crucial for navigating the complexities of trading. There are typically three types of orders:

Traders can opt for a market order, which is executed immediately at the best available price, though it may incur higher costs due to the spread. While market orders are part of the order book, they are typically executed immediately and will likely not stay in the order book for a long time.

A limit order allows traders to specify a buying or selling price, potentially reducing costs by narrowing the spread, albeit at the expense of immediate execution.

A stop order triggers a trade when the price reaches a predefined level, serving as a tool to protect profits or limit losses, but is subject to potential slippage in times of market volatility.

How Do Order Books Work?

An order book works by matching buy and sell orders based on their price and time priority. When a buy order and a sell order have the same price, they are matched and executed, resulting in a trade. The price at which the trade occurs is called the market price. The constant flow of these orders and their matching create a dynamic trading market.

Since an order book is a continuously updated list of buy and sell orders, it provides some valuable insights into the market. A trader can gauge the market’s supply and demand dynamics based on the orders placed.

For example, if the number of buy orders is higher, that may signal strong demand with the potential to push prices up. Alternatively, a higher number of sell orders may signal an overabundant supply with the potential to push prices down.

Another major indicator derived from the order book is depth of market (DOM). DOM is an important indicator that reflects the real-time volume of the orders. A greater depth of the market is considered more liquid and stable because the probability of price manipulation is much lower since large orders will have a smaller market price impact. DOM data can be found using the “market depth chart.” Using DOM data, one can see where the price of a security may be heading in the short term as orders are filled, updated, or canceled.

Who Uses Order Books?

Order books are used by a wide variety of participants in financial markets, including individual retail investors, institutional investors, market makers, and algorithmic traders. These participants rely on order books to make informed decisions on trading securities, derivatives, and other financial instruments. Examples of financial stakeholders that use order books include:

Retail Investors: Individual traders use order books to view the available liquidity, determine entry and exit points, and execute trades based on perceived market direction.

Institutional Investors: Including pension funds, mutual funds, and insurance companies, these large investors use order books to gauge market depth and liquidity, which is crucial when making large-volume trades that could impact the market price.

Market Makers and Liquidity Providers: These are firms or individuals who commit to buying and selling certain securities to ensure there is always a market for them, thus providing liquidity. They use order books to balance their buy and sell orders to manage their inventory effectively and minimize risk.

Algorithmic Traders: These traders use automated systems to interpret order book data and execute trades at high speeds. They might exploit small price discrepancies or predict short-term market movements based on changes in the order book.

Arbitrageurs: Traders who take advantage of price differences between different markets or derivatives use order books to identify profitable discrepancies between the bid and ask prices across different exchanges or instruments.

Examples Of How Order Books Are Used In Traditional Finance

Stock Exchanges: Virtually all major stock exchanges, like the New York Stock Exchange (NYSE) and NASDAQ, use electronic order books that list all outstanding orders. These are integral to their market structure, supporting both direct market access trading and algorithmic trading strategies.

Foreign Exchange (Forex): The Forex market, which is decentralized, uses a network of financial institutions (banks, central banks, investment managers) that provide an electronic order book for currency pairs. These order books help participants gauge market sentiment and liquidity in different currencies.

Futures and Options Exchanges: Exchanges like the Chicago Mercantile Exchange (CME) and the Chicago Board Options Exchange (CBOE) provide detailed order books for a variety of derivatives, including futures and options. Traders use this information to understand market dynamics and liquidity risks.

Bond Markets: While traditionally less transparent, electronic trading platforms for bonds like Bloomberg’s Tradebook or MarketAxess now offer electronic order books. These platforms provide better transparency for pricing and liquidity in the bond market.

These examples illustrate the ubiquity and importance of order books across different financial sectors, highlighting their role in ensuring transparent, efficient, and fair markets. Whether through direct observation or algorithmic analysis, understanding order books is crucial for anyone engaged in trading activities in financial markets.

CeFi vs DeFi: Introduction To CEX Order Books & DEX Exchange Models

Beyond traditional financial exchanges, a similar segment has emerged in the crypto and blockchain industry — Centralized Exchanges (CEXs) and Decentralized Exchanges (DEXs). CEXs began the movement of onboarding investors to the cryptocurrency industry, while DEXs have gone beyond the limitations of CEXs and become one of the largest segments within the decentralized finance (DeFi) ecosystem.

CEXs facilitate cryptocurrency trading by using order books similar to TradFi exchanges. DEXs, on the other hand, facilitate the trading of cryptocurrencies and tokens without the need for a central authority or intermediary, aligning with the core principles of DeFi, which emphasize financial services that are open, interoperable, and without centralized control.

DEXs employ various models to facilitate the trading of cryptocurrencies in a decentralized manner. Each model has its mechanism for matching and executing trades, balancing liquidity provision, and determining prices. Two prominent types of order books that have gained widespread use in the crypto space are Central Limit Order Books (CLOBs) and Automated Market Makers (AMMs).

Model 1: Central Limit Order Books (CLOBs)

Similar to the TradFi order books mentioned above, Central Limit Order Books are a traditional and well-established mechanism for matching buyers and sellers in crypto financial markets. CLOBs are at the heart of most centralized exchanges (CEXs) on the market but are also employed by a few DEXs. CLOBs operate based on a centralized order book that consolidates all the buy and sell orders, providing a clear and organized view of market liquidity. In a CLOB, participants can place various types of orders such as market orders, limit orders, and stop orders.

Model 2: Automated Market Makers (AMMs)

In contrast to CLOBs, Automated Market Makers have emerged as a revolutionary concept within the DeFi ecosystem and DEX segment. AMMs operate on the principles of decentralized liquidity pools, where users contribute funds to a smart contract, forming a liquidity pool that facilitates automated trading.

DEXs that utilize AMMs, such as Uniswap and SushiSwap, don’t rely on a traditional order book. Instead, trading pairs are established by liquidity providers who deposit equal values of two different assets into a pool. These liquidity pools are then used to execute trades at algorithmically determined prices based on the ratio of assets in the pool.

Among the top DEXs in Q1 2024, Uniswap, PancakeSwap, Osmosis, Curve, 1inch, Aerodrome, and Raydium are all AMMs. Therefore, the top DEX players in DeFi generally employ AMM models in their exchanges, which speaks to the preference of DeFi players to take a different approach than their CEX counterparts.

In addition, the majority of DEX trading volumes and market share lie on Ethereum and Solana. These two blockchains have emerged as the networks of choice for deploying DEXs due to their large user base, liquidity, and ecosystem.

Persisting Issues With Crypto DEXs Today

While AMM DEXs such as Uniswap hold a dominant position in the market, they possess a fundamental drawback: they’re not suited for high-frequency trading, automated transactions, or substantial trades, leading to substantial deviations in the exchange rate for larger value transactions.

However, order book exchanges are not easy to build, since the performance (transactions per second and finality) requirements for order book trades are significantly higher than on AMM designs. Decentralization is often sacrificed to increase performance — which poses traders with an unfortunate dilemma and partially explains why dYdX is leaving Ethereum and StarkEx.

One of the major problems faced is the issue of chain interoperability, which is often addressed by using bridges. However, bridging tokens from one chain to another is problematic since “most existing bridges suffer issues with user experience and/or security,” which limits the DEXs by their own bridges.

Another shortcoming that needs to be highlighted is liquidity fragmentation. Deep liquidity is a key element for order book models to ensure buy and sell prices match to fulfill trades. There are multiple reasons for liquidity fragmentation, one of which is the lack of interoperability of native stablecoins across multiple chains.

Moreover, security is another pain point for traders. Since some solutions are reliant on a Proof-of-Stake (PoS) architecture, there remains an issue of obtaining a significant amount of decentralized validators and growing the market cap of the chains’ native tokens. In addition, the previously mentioned bridges add to the security concerns.

Collectively, these issues form a substantial barrier for even the savviest traders. Multi-chain trading, for example, is quite difficult, costly, and risky, which only highlights the interoperability barriers for any other interactions.

What’s The Current Use Of ZK Technology In DEXs?

A brief market overview shows that multiple ecosystems are utilizing zero-knowledge proof technology (ZKP) in their exchange structure. ZKPs enable the verification of a statement’s truth without revealing any underlying details. In the context of DEXs, ZKPs enable traders to validate the accuracy of transactions without revealing sensitive details, ensuring a high level of privacy and security.

In the realm of DEXs, dYdX is exploring zero-knowledge technologies on top of Cosmos to enhance the scalability and privacy features of their exchange structures. Other examples of DEXs that employ zero-knowledge technology in their systems include GRVT and DeGate. However, the segment is still small due to the nascent development of ZK technology.

Nonetheless, ZK-powered order books, by leveraging ZKPs, can revolutionize DEXs. In particular, zkLink X is at the forefront of this DeFi revolution, showcasing its innovative approach to order book designs. Unlike traditional setups, zkLink X leverages ZKPs to provide a secure, private, and scalable trading environment for DEXs.

How ZK-Powered DEXs Work

Zero-Knowledge Proofs: Participants in a ZK-powered order book can prove the validity of their transactions without revealing specific details about those transactions. This cryptographic technique allows users to maintain privacy while still ensuring the integrity of the trading process.

Transaction Aggregation Off-Chain: Instead of processing each transaction on the blockchain individually, zk-powered order books use ZKPs to aggregate multiple transactions off-chain. This means that several transactions can be grouped into a single proof, reducing the computational load on the blockchain.

Off-Chain Order Matching: The order matching process, which typically happens on-chain in traditional setups, is moved off-chain in ZK-powered order books. ZKPs are employed to validate and settle trades without disclosing sensitive information, resulting in faster and more efficient order matching.

Reduced Gas Fees & Enhanced Scalability: By aggregating transactions off-chain and employing ZKPs, ZK-powered order books minimize the need for extensive on-chain computations. This leads to a significant reduction in gas fees, making transactions more cost-effective. Additionally, the off-chain order matching enhances the overall scalability of the DEX.

What Are The Benefits Of ZK Order Books & Developing An Order Book On zkLink X?

First and foremost, the unique design of zkLink X, zkLink’s application-specific scaling engine, empowers developers to build order books with the experience and liquidity of a CEX, but decentralized and non-custodial.

Here’s a simple list of the advantages of building an order book on zkLink X:

1)User-friendly: A common term, but here are the exact features:

Merged stablecoins from multiple chains/rollups

Massive multi-chain/rollup liquidity

Multi-chain accessibility

Fast finality

No gas cost on L2

Partial fulfillment and multiple pending orders

Merged stablecoins from multiple Ethereum rollups, which is also called token merge, eliminate the difference between equivalent tokens on different chains (for example: one USDC on Ethereum and one USDC on Arbitrum) by merging them into a single pair. This functionality adds to the broader massive multi-rollup liquidity, where one can trade native assets from different rollups without using any bridges. Users get access to liquidity from every connected Ethereum rollup. This enables users and builders to tap into native chain liquidity and have a smoother multi-rollup experience under one interface.

In addition, zkLink X connects to multiple Layer 2s, makes zero security compromises, and prevents deposit fraud. There are also no gas fees while trading on Layer 2s. By moving transactions off-chain to the Layer 2, users only pay low transaction fees. Also, since there’s no AMM-like rebalancing, there’s no slippage, fast finality of transactions powered by zk-batching, and greater flexibility with order types, such as partial fulfillment and multiple pending orders with up to 32 maker orders.

2)Decentralized: Core features to be decentralized:

Asset security with ZK-Rollups

Self-custodial

Trustless

Permissionless

No KYC

Validity proofs

It’s also worth highlighting enhanced users’ self-custody and protocol security. Self-custody is achieved by users controlling their accounts through a smart contract rather than simply a private key. This ensures the system is trustless and transparent, and gives users full self-custody over their assets. On the security side, zkLink X inherits the security of Ethereum by using zk-SNARK technology, thereby ensuring the security of cross-rollup transactions. Validity proofs are utilized to verify valid state transitions to a parent chain, which allows it to not compromise on security. The usage of ZKPs ensures that multi-rollup interoperability is safe and secure.

3)Builder-friendly: It’s also great for you to build with:

Simple High-Level APIs

Data Availability

Metamask integration

Application-Specific

Highly-Customizable

Some features will make the building experience for a decentralized order book that much better. Simple High-level APIs allow you to connect your front-end to zkLink’s simple REST-ful API, using the development language and stack of your choice. In addition, to enable your continuous development and building, zkLink X has a built-in data availability layer. You have immediate access to all the relevant on-chain data. For builders’ and users’ convenience, your ZK-powered order book will have a ready-to-go Metamask integration with more wallets coming soon.

Moreover, since one of zkLink X is app-specific, zkLink X is considerably smaller than general-purpose zk-circuits, resulting in lower computational resources and on-chain gas consumption. zkLink X offers developers a high level of customization, such as the choice of which networks to connect to, which DA layer to use, and other tailor-specific functions.

The year 2024 stands on the cusp of technological revolutions, with Web3 projects poised to redefine the boundaries of digital interaction, decentralization, and blockchain innovation. As we enter the new phase of the internet, there’s an increasing demand for creative business concepts that can capitalize on the vast possibilities offered by Web3. In this article we’ll explore the most prevalent Web3 ideas that are still in their infancy, but are crucial for a self-sovereign digital environment.

What is Web3?

Web3 represents the third generation of the internet, a step beyond the static pages of Web1 and the user-generated content of Web2. At its core, Web3 is built on the principles of decentralization, blockchain technology, and token-based economics. Unlike its predecessors, Web3 emphasizes user sovereignty, data security, and a trustless environment where intermediaries are minimized or eliminated.

What are Decentralized Applications (DApps)?

Decentralized applications, or DApps, are software applications that run on a blockchain network instead of being hosted on centralized servers. These applications are not controlled by any single entity, which significantly reduces the risk of censorship, downtime, or external control. DApps are typically open-source, operate autonomously, and have their data and records publicly auditable.

Significance of Web3 and DApps:

Enhanced Security and Privacy

Due to their decentralized nature, DApps offer improved security and privacy over traditional applications. The use of blockchain technology ensures that data is cryptographically secure and distributed across multiple nodes, making it resistant to hacks and unauthorized access.

User Empowerment

Web3 empowers users by giving them control over their data and digital assets. In the Web3 ecosystem, users can have true ownership of their content, digital identities, and online interactions.

Reduced Dependency on Intermediaries

Web3 and DApps minimize the need for intermediaries, such as banks or tech giants, in various transactions. This not only reduces costs but also democratizes access to services.

Creation of a Trustless Environment

In Web3, trust is established through code and consensus mechanisms rather than centralized authorities. This trustless environment opens up new possibilities for collaboration and transactions on a global scale.

Promotion of an Open Internet

With a focus on open-source development and interoperability, Web3 supports a more inclusive and collaborative internet where users can interact across different platforms without sacrificing privacy or security.

The emergence of Web3 has opened up a plethora of opportunities for decentralization in various sectors, including social media, news media, artificial intelligence (AI) and supply chains. Let’s examine how these Web3 platform ideas would operate in a decentralized manner.

Decentralized Social Media Platforms / Creator Economy Tools

How It Works:

Enhanced Creator Economy: On decentralized social media platforms, creators enjoy a new economic paradigm. They can receive direct compensation for their work via cryptocurrencies, which can be more efficient and equitable compared to traditional revenue models reliant on ad revenues or platform fees.

Dynamic Content Tokenization: By tokenizing content as NFTs, creators not only sell unique digital assets but also retain a percentage of sales from any future transactions, creating a continuous revenue stream. This tokenization also opens avenues for digital collectibles and exclusive content access.

Community-Driven Platform Evolution: Decentralized governance allows for a democratic approach to platform updates and policy changes. Token-based voting systems enable users to propose, vote on, and implement changes, ensuring the platform evolves in line with user preferences.

Robust Data Privacy: Blockchain technology not only offers secure data storage but also ensures users maintain autonomy over their personal information. This contrasts sharply with traditional social media platforms where user data is often monetized without direct benefit to the users.

Decentralized News Sources

How It Works:

Combating Misinformation with Immutable Content Authentication: The rise of fake news and deep fakes has made it difficult for readers to discern truth from fiction. Immutable content authentication ensures that news content is time-stamped and permanently recorded on a blockchain. This feature becomes crucial in verifying the authenticity and origin of information, providing a reliable source of truth in a sea of misinformation.

Promoting Balanced Reporting with Equitable Community Moderation: The token-based system for content moderation reduces the risk of biased news perpetuated by centralized news agencies. By democratizing the moderation process, a broader and more diverse group of stakeholders can participate in content governance, which is instrumental in creating a balanced and less biased news environment.

Encouraging Integrity with a Reward-Based Ecosystem: Incentivizing fact-checking and content curation through tokens can significantly elevate the quality of news. This system actively engages the community in maintaining the integrity of the news platform, making it a collective effort to fight against the spread of false news.

Blockchain Authenticator for AI

How It Works:

Ensuring Transparency with Comprehensive Development Ledger: In the context of AI-generated content and deep fakes, transparency in AI development is critical. Recording each phase of AI development on a blockchain ensures a clear and transparent developmental history, enabling stakeholders to verify the authenticity of AI-generated content.

Upholding Ethical Standards with Streamlined Compliance: Blockchain records provide a verifiable way to ensure AI models adhere to ethical standards and regulations. In an age where AI can be used to create convincing but false information, having a system that ensures and demonstrates compliance with ethical norms is vital to prevent misuse.

Protecting Intellectual Property: As AI becomes more advanced, protecting the intellectual property of AI developers is crucial to prevent the replication and misuse of sophisticated AI models in creating deep fakes or false information. Blockchain offers a secure method to safeguard these rights, promoting a responsible and ethical development environment.

Decentralized Supply Chain Management

How It Works:

Transparent Tracking and Verification: In a decentralized supply chain, each product’s journey from manufacturer to consumer can be tracked on a blockchain. This ensures transparency and accountability at every step of the supply chain, making it possible to verify the authenticity and origin of products.

Smart Contract Automation: Smart contracts can automate various processes in the supply chain, such as payments, order fulfillment, and compliance checks.

Ethereum has revolutionized the world of decentralized applications (dApps), offering a secure and transparent way to interact online. However, early blockchain networks like Ethereum, provide a basic account model which is unintuitive for most users, called Externally Owned Accounts (EOAs).

In a recent blog post about native account abstraction, we dived into the key challenges posed by EOAs:

A subpar blockchain user experience.

Security risks associated with complete control by the private key holder.

The lack of flexibility due to EOA’s rigid ties with the Ethereum protocol.

To deal with these problems, account abstraction was introduced. Account abstraction redefines how accounts function, offering developers flexibility through customizable “account contracts.” These contracts, acting as smart contracts, employ the three pillars of account abstraction: signature abstraction for custom permissions, fee abstraction for versatile payments, and nonce abstraction for enhanced convenience.

For a deeper understanding of the challenges associated with EOAs and how Starknet overcomes them, visit Native Account Abstraction: Opening Blockchain to New Possibilities.

Session Keys

A particularly promising application of account abstraction lies in the concept of “session keys.” Traditionally, decentralized applications (dApps) require users to individually sign each transaction through their wallet, introducing friction, especially during multiple transactions in a session. Account abstraction introduces the innovation of generating “session keys,” enabling a dApp to autonomously sign transactions on behalf of the user for a specified period and transaction parameters, such as limits on duration and value.

The implementation of session keys presents a significant opportunity for dApps to streamline user interactions. Users can tailor session keys to their specific needs, whether they engage in frequent trading or occasional purchases. This adaptability fosters a more inclusive user base for blockchain technology and markedly enhances user experience in two pivotal areas: decentralized finance (DeFi) and onchain gaming.

DeFi

In the DeFi realm, the current inconvenience of decentralized exchanges (DEXs) lies in the necessity to approve each transaction individually at various stages. However, with session keys, we can replicate the seamless experience of centralized exchanges (CEXs) without succumbing to their drawbacks. For instance, a user could create a session key valid for an hour, allowing trades of up to $7000 on a decentralized exchange without the need for individual confirmation of each transaction through their wallet. This not only simplifies the process but also contributes to a more user-friendly and efficient DeFi ecosystem.

Gaming

The current state of onchain gaming can be described as clunky at best. Rather than imposing the intricacies of managing gas fees or signing multiple transactions on users, session keys facilitate seamless UX, resembling the smooth experience of traditional games. This shift results in a more user-friendly onchain gaming environment, liberating gamers from the hassle of configurations and errors. Gamers can focus on gaming, instead of having to focus more on the blockchain itself.

Conclusion

Ethereum has transformed decentralized applications (dApps) but faces challenges with rigid account structures like Externally Owned Accounts (EOAs). The introduction of account abstraction addresses these issues, offering developers flexibility and enhancing user experience through customizable “account contracts.”

Perhaps one of the most important applications of account abstraction is “session keys,” which streamlines user interactions in DeFi and onchain gaming. In DeFi, session keys eliminate the need for individual transaction approvals on decentralized exchanges (DEXs), providing a user-friendly experience similar to centralized exchanges (CEXs). In onchain gaming, session keys simplify the user experience, freeing gamers from the complexities of gas fees and transaction signatures.

Nuclear power is utterly remarkable. Despite popular opinion, it is one of the safest and lowest carbon forms of energy. It is also one of the few on-demand forms of low-carbon energy. As such, it will be a crucial technology as we transition to net-zero. However, the nuclear industry faces a massive problem: it costs too much. New nuclear power plants cost tens of billions of dollars and take well over a decade to build, and once built, the energy they produce is some of the most expensive on the market. This has led many governments and energy providers to distance themselves from this planet-saving technology. But a new type of reactor called an SMR promises to solve all of these issues and kick-start a nuclear renaissance, saving the nuclear industry. However, a pioneering SMR project has just been cancelled because costs are ballooning out of control. So, the question has to be asked: is the future of nuclear energy doomed? Possibly not.

Let’s start at the beginning: what is an SMR? SMR stands for Small Modular Reactor. Typical nuclear power plants have several enormous custom-built reactors. These are incredibly complex and must be carefully and accurately assembled on-site. This skyrockets the construction cost and deployment time. SMRs solve this by using reactors small enough to be fully assembled off-site in a controlled factory and then shipped to the location. These reactors produce less power, so you need more of them, generally over 10, to make a power plant. However, the overall cost of these reactors per MW of power should be far cheaper than regular reactors, as the factory can use economies of scale to lower prices. Deployment should also be far quicker, as reactors can be built ahead of time, and their small nature and controlled production facility make construction far quicker. There is even a flexibility advantage, as an SMR plant can add or remove reactors quickly to better meet demand. Ordinary reactors take decades and billions of dollars to expand their output.

** Quick interruption, if you want more from me, or interact with me, go follow me on Bluesky**

Several companies are pioneering SMR technology.

The Internet of RollApps is a network of chains consisting of RollApps (layer 2s) and the Dymension Hub (layer 1). RollApps are easy-to-deploy modular blockchains that natively integrate with the Dymension Hub, which provides them security, liquidity, and connectivity.

Why Dymension

Crypto apps are in dire need of ease of use and economic sustainability. Recently, rollups have shown a simple business model that works, fees minus base layer costs equals their profit. As a result, a surge of L2s were deployed each with its own custom implementation, multi-sig bridge, and security assumptions. This led to a fragmented, insecure, and chaotic user experience diminishing the advantages of rollups and modular blockchains.

How Dymension

Dymension standardizes rollups with IBC (Inter-Blockchain Communication Protocol), similar to how tokens were standardized with ERC. RollApps are a new crypto primitive offering the rollup business model along with speed and scale under one unified experience. This paves the way for the emergence of a true Internet of rollups.

RollApps are modular blockchains, instead of maintaining costly validators, RollApps leverage the Dymension Hub (layer 1) for securing their funds and Data Availability (DA) networks for publishing their transaction data.

Building Blocks of Dymension

Security

IBC is an important aspect of Dymension. IBC is a battle-tested bridging protocol that allows secure communication between different chains. RollApps connect to the IBC economy via Dymension Hub, similar to how a server connects to the internet via an internet service provider.

Dymension replaces centralized and risky multi-sig bridges prevalent in Ethereum and L2 ecosystems with IBC-connected rollups. By building IBC for rollups, Dymension validates that all funds deposited into a RollApp are as secure as the Dymension Hub itself.

Liquidity

Dymension Hub hosts an embedded liquidity layer that facilitates asset pricing, swapping, and efficient token routing across the ecosystem. This promotes economic growth by enabling a seamless user onboarding experience to RollApps and easy access to RollApp tokens.

Data, Scale and Costs

RollApps publish transaction data to external blockchains such as Celestia, Avail, NEAR and others to provide verifiability for RollApps. RollApps can choose which blockchain is the best choice for their data according to costs, values, tech and more. This creates competition and a data market necessary for scaling all data requirements of the entire Internet of RollApps.

Crypto UX

The future of crypto UX is deposit, play, withdraw. Dymension’s infrastructure streamlines it in scale, enabling developers to deploy RollApps in a few clicks with the Dymension RollApp Development Kit (RDK). Users can easily deposit from Ethereum and further across all of the crypto ecosystem with a single transaction routed through the Dymension Hub.

Welcome to a new Dymension

Star Atlas has created another game changer on Solana, enabling ecosystem users to pay their Solana transaction fees directly in ATLAS. The technological solution is called ATLAS Protocol for Real-time In-game Microtransaction Ecosystem (PRIME), powering direct ATLAS payments. It is also available to third parties, including community developers, wallets and infrastructure builders.

Atlas PRIME simplifies the lives of its users who from now on require holding only one utility token: ATLAS. It enables the establishment of true simultaneous play-and-earn and replaces the need for signing every transaction with Solana through exclusive use of ATLAS, e.g. for movement and crafting in Star Atlas Golden Era (SAGE) game modules.

Michael Wagner, Co-founder of Star Atlas and CEO of ATMTA, Inc., said:

“Atlas PRIME adds another key pillar to the long-term sustainability and self-sovereignty of the circular Star Atlas economy. This additional ATLAS token utility is another step in bringing power to the people, and enables the onboarding of the worldwide player base.”

With Atlas PRIME, users retain full control over their actions. Atlas PRIME is being released as a pre-enabled facultative feature, and can be turned on or off by the user.

The first Star Atlas feature to include Atlas PRIME functionality is the upcoming SAGE Labs game module. Atlas PRIME also makes it possible for Unreal Engine 5 game players to only use one currency, ATLAS, significantly lowering friction and removing a major game adoption barrier.

All Star Atlas products and services are slated for future implementation of the direct ATLAS payment functionality, and will receive it upon the update of a given product’s Star Atlas Account program.

How it Works

When users pay transaction fees in ATLAS, Atlas PRIME covers the SOL on their behalf. ATLAS is not converting directly at market rate, but is tied to it.

There is a fee associated with the ATLAS-SOL exchange rate, which is set by ATMTA and represents a source of revenue for the studio. The initial exchange rate fee is 115% ATLAS for 100% of a SOL equivalent amount. The 15% margin is determined based on significant risk associated with holding volatility currencies, including a liquidity risk for ATLAS, and covering the infrastructure costs for the service. Rates may change in the future.

For developers to be able to use Atlas PRIME in their third party app, they will need the bindings and the endpoint information, available at build.staratlas.com.

In future Atlas PRIME feature expansions, users can look forward to more functionality, including enabling auto-sign on wallets, allowing for multiple simultaneous levels of security for their assets and various wallet actions. This will allow users to safely play the game with a game session hot wallet protected through a security configuration via Star Atlas Accounts.

Visit Labs.StarAtlas.com and prepare to use ATLAS for settling transaction fees in SAGE Labs!

ABOUT STAR ATLAS

Star Atlas is a next-gen gaming metaverse emerging from the confluence of state-of-the-art blockchain, real-time graphics, multiplayer video games, and decentralized financial technologies.

Using Unreal Engine 5’s Nanite, real-time graphics technology allows for cinematic quality video game visuals.

“The streets of hell are paved with good intentions”

Johann Jacob Rambach circa 1700s.

What is Web 2.5 you may ask? Well in my head Web 2.5 is Web 2s attempt at Web3. Essentially a traditional business’ foray into web3. Some are quite good implementations, some not so much. Nearly all instill some level of angst into their holders, due to technology, longevity and security.

As with all articles on this blog, this is a work of opinion. Hopefully well thought out opinion but opinion nevertheless.

There are many examples of web2.5 the licensed space. A web2 company wishes to capture a web3 audience or at least experiment with web3 technologies to show that they are receptive to a changing market.

They perform an experiment large or small, in selling NFTs. They sellout their mint or they don’t. They learn lessons as to the subset of their customers willing to participate early. They grow the offering or they don’t.

In the physical world, these experiments are quite straightforward. A company can release a product, say a toy and if it sells well, great. If it doesn’t, they learned information. The issue with NFTs, is that collectors expect more. They expect utility, longevity and managed communities. If they don’t get all 3 of these aspects they are generally unhappy. They feel slighted, they feel ripped off. I don’t make the rules, this is just the web3 expectation.

The expectations of web2/2.5 participants are diverse, they expect safety, engagement, fun and to learn.

The issue

Licensed NFT Platforms are shutting down, moving their assets into stasis and generally succumbing to a bear market that some were born into.

For consumers this is an ultimate disappointment. They collected their favorite IP in a fun community and now have ownership of a jpeg in a community that they must make themselves. They were early but they trusted that the licensor would do them right. After all, why would a real world licensor, risk their reputation with their most passionate fans.

Well this is the situation in which we find ourselves. It has happened already and will most likely happen again.

Where to from here. What do all parties involved need to do to have this play out well for everyone? To be ready for a mass market, to upskill the world into web3.

We all have our role to play to right this ship.

The role of licensors

In e-commerce, a common idea is that a business should not get into what it doesn’t understand and that is no more true in web3. A licensor needs to fully understand what they are getting into and what will be fulfilled, what they expect and what their customers will expect of them.

Licensors need to work out who are they attempting to sell to. Web3 people or Web2. These are quite different customer bases with different needs. Understand what your customer expectations will be, before you begin.

Good technology is not enough. It is just one part of an ongoing, successful and happy collecting community. As I have said a few times previously, we need better communication of what the NFT is, and what it isn’t. It would be like if a games company released a console but did not provide any details as to the games that might be released. Customers in the long term would be reluctant to participate. The manufacturer may sell many initial units but if the development and management of the product is not ongoing, customers will be upset and new customers will not be forthcoming.

Have a strategy for a situation if you are let down by your platform or things go awry. How will you make this right with your consumers. After all, the consumer doesn’t care whether a platform did or didn’t deliver, they are most likely only participating because of your IP. Consider rebooting collections on a new platform or releasing more rights for these static NFTs.

The role of platforms

Understand your role as a steward for web3. We get one shot at a good first impression. Both to your real customer (the licensor) and their customer (the consumer). Platforms must deliver in ways that under promise and over deliver. This is the only way to ever win over the masses, both licensors and consumers. There are many detractors of web3, don’t give them more ammunition. Communicate better. Generally customers will understand. If they don’t, the market conditions might change. If a market changes you are still earning royalties.

In essence, set clear expectations and deliver on them for the long term. All parties are relying on you to make this work and thrive.

The role of consumers

This is the toughest one to discuss. At present, consumers of web2.5 or web3 ip, need to be gamblers, they are taking risks of trust with every new purchase. It is somehow, like the perils of web3 are being taken by web2.5 as acceptable rules of engagement. Which in my opinion is wrong. They need to protect their customers more, as the licensor has more to lose, i.e. real world credibility.

Consumers essentially should not participate in anything they aren’t willing to lose. We are early, we are the financial fodder, we are the focus group. Collect what you like, monitor your holdings, don’t see licensed NFTs as investment vehicles because they aren’t (not financial advice, I’m just some internet typist).

Consumers also need to act with their dollar. They should refuse to participate in vagueness. This has been an allure up until now, but it is time to expect more.

Mass Adoption

Unfortunately at the present time, I am glad the masses aren’t here as it would be more of an issue for more people having their first or second disappointment in web3. We need to mature, be more robust understand what an NFT actually is and set deliverable longterm expectations.

While ever disappointment is a right of passage for a participant in web3, mass adoption should not take place.
