Enjoy these architectural features and historic furnishings at the Metropolitan Museum of art and learn about the history of old New York.

The original English version was released on August 10

New York has been changing. From the original gathering place and residence of aborigines to now one of the most famous cities in the world, New York has experienced earth shaking changes in population and industry, which has led to the continuous expansion of the urban architectural environment. This momentum has left some world-renowned buildings, structures and places in New York - such as St. Patrick’s Cathedral, Central Park, Brooklyn Bridge, Chrysler building, Empire State Building, Times Square, central station and many other buildings. Moreover, the momentum of expansion will continue to shape the urban landscape of New York in the coming years.

However, one cost of this progress is that over time, many historical buildings have been demolished and disappeared. Fortunately, in recent years, with the promotion of many urban residents and community groups, New York has made progress in the protection of historical sites, protective designation and economic incentives, encouraging the protection of architectural heritage in the city.

As early as the early 20th century, the Metropolitan Museum of art began to collect American architectural components. The current collection of the U.S. Department of art has witnessed the important role of New York in the evolution of American architectural design and the evolving city appearance. Follow us on a virtual tour from Wall Street to the upper west side and learn about some historical buildings from the collections of the Metropolitan Museum of art.

The second bank of the United States was later changed to the United States laboratory office

Wall Street (built in 1822-1824 and demolished in 1915)

The exterior wall of the second bank of the United States is preserved in Charles Engelhard courtyard, exhibition hall 700 of the Metropolitan Museum.

Originally standing on the north side of Wall Street between williams street and Nassau street in lower Manhattan, this marble exterior wall has become a landmark of Charles Engelhard court. It is the entrance to the New York branch of the second bank of the United States. It was designed by American architect Martin Euclid Thompson. He mainly borrowed from the 18th century British Palladian architecture, adopted a prominent central section and triangular lintel.

Anonymous photographer (USA). Gift from Florence Waterbury, 1968 (68.724.1).

By 1853, the second bank branch had been closed, and the building became the seat of the US assay office, which tested precious metals such as gold and silver to determine their composition and value. In the first few years of the 20th century, the laboratory office moved elsewhere, and Thompson’s modest Palladian buildings were submerged in majestic skyscrapers, in disrepair and no longer beautiful.

Bank of America’s second branch in front of the Metropolitan Museum, 1925.

Attempts were made to preserve the building, but it was demolished in 1915. Robert De Forest, the president of the Metropolitan Museum of art, sought to preserve the exterior wall. A few years later, in 1924, it was placed at the south entrance of the newly opened American wing.

You know what? The second branch is not the first building on Wall Street. The government bought the property from the verplanck family, one of the famous Dutch families in the colonial period in New York, and demolished their Georgian style luxury townhouses to give the bank room to build. Some furniture from the viplanck family’s city house is now displayed in the viplanck room.

Lagrand Colonnade

428 – 34 Lafayette Street (built 1831-1833, partially dismantled 1902-1903)

Colonnade, columns and plinth from the lagrand balcony in New York, 1832-1833. Marble. New York Metropolitan Museum of art collection, donor funds, friends of the U.S. Department of art foundation, Charles C. savage gift, joint venture purchase. 2010 (2010.348a – d)

In the early 19th century, the city of New York began to expand northward and new residential areas emerged. Builder Seth Geer began building nine luxury townhouses on Lafayette street between fourth street and Astor place, which was considered to be the northern suburb of New York at that time.

Colonnade with horses and carriages in front, about 1895. Gelatin silver print photo, 10 ½ × nine ½ Inches (26.7 cm x 24.1 cm). Provided by the New York City Museum, New York (x2010.11.2313)

This series of houses with bold design and classical style are called lagrand colonnade, with marble colonnade in front, which is advertised by the evening post as “unmatched by any private house in the country”. The design of Corinthian style capitals is based on the choragic monument of lysicrates in Athens, Greece, which is considered to be the first example of ancient Corinthian stone columns. Although the construction of Lagrange balcony was focused on the future, these houses soon became one of the most fashionable areas in the city. At that time, John Jacob Astor III, Cornelius Vanderbilt, Washington Irving and others who lived here were famous New Yorkers.

In 1902 and 1903, five houses at the southernmost end of the hotel, which was merged into a colonnade, were demolished in order to build a hotel for wernamek department store
