Last week we asked CT who their favorite DAOs are. 

DeepDAO has over 10k DAOs on their registry which is kind of incredible when you think back on the first ever DAO, aka The DAO, which launched from Ethereum back in 2016.

The most popular comment came from Kris Millar who tagged Gitcoin and explained that he “loves the way the project has iterated over time and keeps pushing for more decentralization. Gitcoin showed the power of DAOs as a coordination tool. It offers so much value to the crypto ecosystem, keeping devs and builders fed so they can keep building cool stuff.”

Gitcoin, which is known for their Grants Protocol, is a fascinating case study of progressive decentralization. It originally launched as a centralized company in 2017, and during 2021 it morphed into a DAO, continuing to ship grants rounds every quarter, and built out a robust group of core contributors.

The next DAO that was tagged a few times in our comments section was Giveth.

Giveth founder, the legendary Griff Green who was part of The DAO (epic), explained how Giveth is “pushing for an evolutionary leap in human coordination that will eventually replace governments”.

Giveth allows anyone to use crypto to donate to their charity of choice through the Giveth website, focusing on “for-good” projects like climate change, regenerative living, and others. The coolest things about Giveth is that when you donate, in turn you get rewarded with $GIVE tokens to make an even larger impact.

We heard from the folks at MetaGame in our comments who are building a “massive online coordination game about finding the most optimal ways to play life on a personal and collective level”.

MetaGame are OGs in the DAO space, launched by Peth and birthed from the Meta Cartel ecosystem. Story Guild is also part of the MetaGame family, and they have given us a lot of love and support during our early stages of Service DAO experimentation!

The ImpactDAO account also tagged a recent book they released on impact DAOs that is a culmination of their intensive research on 12 mature impact DAOs including interviewing 30 DAO builders.

We kept our question vague on purpose - your “favorite” DAO is a personal opinion, and we all have very different journeys that lead us into the DAO space.

Two of our Story Guild members attended MCON2 this past September in Denver. It was a conglomeration of some of the most experienced and cutting-edge DAOs out there, and it was great to mingle with the DAO community in person.

Thanks to everyone who responded to our tweet - we can’t wait to see what the communities favorite DAOs are a year from now, after we have another 12 months to build and iterate! 

Humble Beginnings

In July 2021, 4 members of the YAP Global team, an international PR agency servicing crypto clients, launched YAP DAO — a Service DAO dedicated to helping projects get earned media placement and shape their narratives through the power of storytelling. 

In the height of the DAO craze we were able to service 10+ projects, build our DAO to a team of 15 contributors, and participate in virtual and in-person conferences all over the world. 

During our first year of activity there was one question that we got over and over again: “Is YAP Global Decentralizing into YAP DAO”?

The short answer is no — YAP DAO has always been a separate organization to YAP Global, although there is crossover in the talent. 

Why a Rebrand?

To protect the integrity of both organizations and distinguish the service offerings, we decided to rebrand YAP DAO to Story Guild, the reasoning being that a new identity that better represents our offering in the DAO space.

So what is Story Guild?

The name Story Guild is inspired by two important pieces.

First, it’s our job to turn technical jargon into compelling stories to shape the narrative in the web3 space. We are storytellers at heart 💚

Second, our treasury was modeled after Raid Guild (a web design/development Service DAO) who pays their contributors 90% of the profit coming in from jobs, and allows the DAO treasury to keep 10%. 

We are a worldwide guild of writers, PR professionals, and marketers, aiming to be the experts in the DAO space when it comes to messaging, storytelling, and organic media attention.

What’s next for Story Guild?

PledgingRequirements
Any potential member will be accepted if they meet the minimum requirements:

1. 250 DAI membership pledge

2. At least one of the following:

• PR/Comms/ Marketing/ Social Media experience

• DAO/crypto experience

• Journalism/writing experience

• Enthusiasm and a willingness to learn in either of the above areas

• Submitted samples of your work/resume/cv

How to Pledge Story Guild

1. Install MetaMask + add the Gnosis Chain network as a custom RPC

2. When the Gnosis Chain is added to your MetaMask, ensure that it is funded with at least 250 WXDAI (plus gas). You can bridge funds from Mainnet to Gnosis Chain here

3. If you need to swap DAI to WXDAI you can do that here 

4. Once you are connected to the Gnosis chain and your wallet contains DAI, head over to the Story Guild membership page on DAOhaus

5. Navigate to “proposals” on the lefthand side

6. Click “New Proposal +”

7. Click the dropdown for "classics" and then select “membership” for proposal type

8. Fill out the form as follows:

For title list “Your Name, Membership Proposal”

• Shares Request: 1 (note, this 1 share gives you voting power within the DAO)

• Description: This is your chance to tell us why you want to join the DAO, and what you bring to the table! Your background in PR/Comms, your knowledge of journalism, crypto, etc. Please include a brief resume, CVV, or samples of your work.

• Tribute Offered: 250 WXDAI (remember, if you choose to leave the DAO you have the option to “rage quit” and receive back this DAI. This pledge amount shows your commitment and willingness to help build the DAO)

• Link: Link to your website, LinkedIn, Social Profiles — anything that would help us get to know you and your work.

10. After your proposal is processed and voted on, you will be welcomed as an official member of the DAO!

11. We also recommend you set up a profile on 3BoxLabs in order to have your name associated with your ETH address — this personalizes your Ethereum account and makes it easier to distinguish members!
