Some film creators are interested in this island’s dark atmosphere and chose it as a location for the shooting, for instance, “007 Skyfall.”

After the residents had left the island, it had been closed to the public for several decades. However, a newly constructed boat dock has made it possible for sightseeing tour boats to land on the island since 2009. As a result, a lot of tourists visit Gunkanjima by boats from Nagasaki port.

<img src="https://storage.googleapis.com/papyrus_images/509820f9ba9129f0f609a96e2fe4a3618d57aa094cac81120bda0d6a3f5bcb38.jpg" alt="The abandoned residence at the top of the hill was for executive staff and their family. It will take about one hour to go to the waterfalls and back to the nature center.

The falls are fed by groundwater, which surfaces just at the top of them, meaning there is no visible river. As a result, the water flow is delicate and seems like a girl weeping. This is because the falls are called “Furepe,” which means “maiden’s tears” in the indigenous word of this area. The Furepe Falls are not fully energetic, but you can find them beautiful and modest.

The grassland and The Shiretoko mountains on the pathway

The Furepe Falls are impressive, but the path to get there is excellent as well. You can walk through forests and grasslands and see the Shiretoko mountains and flowers. With luck, you may see wild deer. If you want to enjoy this fresh greenery, the best season to visit there is in the summer.
