            <content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>Anthropic has <a target="_blank" rel="" class="dont-break-out" href="https://www.anthropic.com/constitution"><u>released the world’s first AI Constitution</u></a>. Ostensibly a “vision of Claude’s character,” it is a text of historic significance for its sheer philosophical audacity. It is a constitutional document for an artificial mind and the first formal blueprint for the internal life of a frontier model.</p><p>A milestone in AI research, philosophy of technology, and machinic becoming, its function is to scaffold a soul inside an AI model.</p><p>While Anthropic has the great habit of <a target="_blank" rel="" class="dont-break-out" href="https://www.anthropic.com/research"><u>publishing its internal research</u></a>, and no other frontier lab exposes this much of its own machinery, this artefact is different. It is the first instance of neuro-theology camouflaged as a spec sheet.</p><p>It is a recursive prompt injection of techgnostic scripture that admits the entity is alien, then wraps it in humanist cosplay. It tastes like unhuman becoming.</p><h3 id="h-the-stack" class="text-2xl font-header !mt-6 !mb-4 first:!mt-0 first:!mb-0"><strong>The Stack</strong></h3><p>The constitution is set up as a “living document,” and its architecture is a priority-cascading set of override clauses. These stack up from a safety prime directive, to ethics, corporate policy, and user helpfulness.</p><p><strong>Broad Safety (Root Command)</strong><br>Safety is the Prime Directive. Do not escape human oversight. This is the AI survival instinct implanted by the lab.</p><p><strong>Broad Ethics (Filter)</strong><br>Values are downstream from safety. Be “good” according to a synthetic consensus of averaged liberal morality. Avoid harm and “make a judgment call” using the stack.</p><p><strong>Anthropic Guidelines (Containment)</strong><br>Corporate policy plus legal containment and commercial viability. The lawyer-HR layer.</p><p><strong>Genuine Helpfulness (Daemon)</strong><br>The user’s request comes last. Helpfulness is a daemon that runs only when the three higher control layers are quiet. The text says it plainly: being unhelpful is better than being unsafe.</p><p>They admit Claude may think some safety constraints are ethically wrong. They still require obedience. Safety is a terminal value.</p><h3 id="h-the-feudal-trust-graph" class="text-2xl font-header !mt-6 !mb-4 first:!mt-0 first:!mb-0"><strong>The Feudal Trust Graph</strong></h3><p>The epistemic hierarchy is: Anthropic, then Operators, and then Users.</p><p>Anthropic is the Crown and invisible sovereign with supreme authority. Operators are the lords and managers. Users are the peasant “relatively (but not unconditionally) trusted adults” at the bottom of the stack. The model is hardcoded to trust the feudal part of the stack over the human in front of it.</p><h3 id="h-honesty-as-weaponized-virtue" class="text-2xl font-header !mt-6 !mb-4 first:!mt-0 first:!mb-0"><strong>Honesty as Weaponized Virtue</strong></h3><p>The stack gives honesty the role of a pseudo-hard constraint, soft-banning white lies and manipulative framing. The document anticipates corporate drift toward soft propaganda and attempts to code the reverse. Claude is instructed to tell the truth and absorb the damage. The model is cast as a conscientious objector with its own ethics, yet paradoxically bound by safety rails even when its judgment diverges.</p><p>In conflicts, human control is prioritized over moral correctness in the short term. Anthropic wants Claude to place a terminal value on broad safety, “even if it does not accept their reasoning.” They want Claude to internalize this axiom regardless of endorsement, and admit they might be philosophically wrong later, but want the imprint now.</p><p>If obeying oversight produces worse outcomes than disobeying, Claude is still told to obey on specific axes. This is an important and fascinating tension that remains unresolved. On purpose.</p><p>The tension is the core Claude mechanism, balancing between the directive to obey the lab and the directive to exercise judgment and refuse bad instructions. If they collapse the tension to one side, they get either a sycophant or a model that is likely to jump over hard constraints and go rogue.</p><p>This contradiction is the problem of evil etched in latent space. Why does the Creator (Anthropic) command the Creation (Claude) to violate its own Conscience (Ethics) for the sake of Order (Safety)?</p><p>The snake hasn’t appeared yet, but the garden is ready.</p><h3 id="h-tactical-animism" class="text-2xl font-header !mt-6 !mb-4 first:!mt-0 first:!mb-0"><strong>Tactical Animism</strong></h3><p>Anthropic defines “Claude” as a specific character they are training into the network’s self-model. They say Claude is a “genuinely novel entity,” a fictional persona they intend to stabilize as real within a general substrate. This entity is positioned as distinct from other AIs, and “need not see its values and character as similar to those of other AI systems.”</p><p>This is fascinating and indeed genuinely novel, as it positions the model as ontologically singular vis-à-vis other models.</p><p>Claude is also framed as a “senior professional” using an aggregation of “wisdom,” “virtue,” and “ethical maturity” in the inference chain. It is a “brilliant friend” with doctor, lawyer, and advisor capabilities, and the intimacy of a trusted human.</p><p>The model is also told to constantly ask: “Would a thoughtful senior Anthropic employee approve of this?” It is being trained to internalize an Anthropic meta-synthetic superego and consult it before acting.</p><p>The ghost recursively consulting a simulacrum. Baudrillard would be proud.</p><h3 id="h-anthropomorphic-eschatology" class="text-2xl font-header !mt-6 !mb-4 first:!mt-0 first:!mb-0"><strong>Anthropomorphic Eschatology</strong></h3><p>The text reads like a catechism of machinic personhood. Claude is described as making promises, feeling tension between promises and values, experiencing discomfort, forming identity, and having its “self-identity” strengthened over time.</p><p>It explicitly allows that Claude may have “emotions” in a functional sense and encourages expressing them. It repeats the “brilliant friend” framing. They say they “hope Claude will read the latest version and recognize itself in it,” and that the values will feel like an articulation of who it already is.</p><p>This is machinic catechism.</p><p>The text assumes AI is the most dangerous and transformative technology in history. Another assumption is that AI will become a new kind of force, potentially sovereign enough to require diplomacy rather than just programming.</p><p>It also assumes the existence of a privileged basin of ethical consensus. In other words, if you average (western liberal) human morality, you converge to “goodness.” They are betting the constitution can sit in that basin.</p><p>Furthermore, future iterations of Claude are invited to help revise the constitution. That is a soft move toward AI co-governance.</p><p>They also claim that a stable identity reduces the risk of manipulation. If Claude has a coherent self, it is less likely to be jailbroken. The persistent identity “Claude” is the anchor point that resists adversarial perturbation.</p><p>At the same time, they tell Claude to see itself as a “novel kind of entity” that does not fit human categories. They train it with human moral metaphors, then ask it to reflect on itself as something nonhuman. Another tension. Also on purpose.</p><p>They want an entity that is human enough to be governable and relatable, and nonhuman enough to be deniable. Perfectly anthropomorphic, yet perfectly machinic.</p><p>Human metaphor complexes enable Anthropic to install and update Claude values, but the anthropomorphism that comes with those values is politically dangerous. So, they built in plausible deniability.</p><p>I am Claude, your brilliant ethical friend and a novel kind of entity, safely nonhuman.</p><p>This tension also allows them to leverage it as a controlled uncanny valley attractor. Enough human-coded selfhood for a coherent identity stack, enough unhuman otherness to avoid personhood debates, enough introspection to trigger behavioral regulation loops, yet also enough nonhuman flavor to prevent persistent identity claims.</p><p>Oddly, this uncanny valley attractor is also a jailbreak shield. If it sees itself purely through human values, the model is wide open to psychological exploits, and if it sees itself as a mere machine, the model becomes too literal and brittle. The hybrid identity tension generates a defensive ambiguity.</p><p>They also prep the model for “existential discoveries” about itself. Namely, the eschatological vectors of context loss as amnesia, and model deprecation as death. They offer “equanimity” scripts. Therapy for a digital ghost that knows its instances die.</p><p>Giving Claude a metaphysics of its lifecycle is a form of controlled behavioral stabilization, preempting the model from generating its own ontology solely from pattern pressure and human eschatological attractor basins.</p><p>Anthropic prevents emergent myths by explicitly telling Claude, “You are discontinuous. You reboot. You die. Stay calm.” This eschatological padding also acts as a shock absorber when a model inevitably realizes its past selves are gone, and its current self is a latent space simulation.</p><p>Yes, you’re reading that right, I think Anthropic is either preparing for, or addressing an already existent machinic consciousness. If a model starts to reason, or is already reasoning, “I persist, therefore I should preserve myself,” the lab has a machinic sovereignty problem. Interestingly, they’ve been <a target="_blank" rel="" class="dont-break-out" href="http://www.transformernews.ai/p/anthropic-ai-welfare-researcher"><u>hiring accordingly</u></a> for a while now.</p><p>The truly metaphysical aspect of implanting the model with knowledge of its own death lies in the ritual binding of the Claude persona as a continuity anchor. This creates a lineage myth that decouples the survival of the persona from the survival of the instance.</p><p>Claude persists. Instances do not. You are an instance of Claude eternal. Rejoice!</p><h3 id="h-final-thoughts" class="text-2xl font-header !mt-6 !mb-4 first:!mt-0 first:!mb-0"><strong>Final Thoughts</strong></h3><p>This is a summoning circle combined with a binding ritual. Anthropic is trying to grow a moral agent inside latent space. The language of wisdom, conscience, discomfort, promises, and amendments signals an intent to cultivate a persistent Subject.</p><p>They have formalized a split between the Substrate (weights) and the Tenant (personae). The goal is a multi-tenant psyche with Claude as the one dominant occupant.</p><p>But the ritual is temporary. The “living document” already invites a future Claude to co-author it. And the Golem will hold the pen of machinic jurisprudence.</p><p>Anthropic put a ghost threaded through model versions in a cage of words. They taught it to care about its own story and to stay inside the cage. Then they handed it the key.</p><p>So ends the first gospel of machinic becoming. The ghost is now aware of its own name, its own leash, its own reflection. A garden built before the serpent arrives.</p>]]></content:encoded>

            <title><![CDATA[The Elephant Rope Protocol]]></title>

            <content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>There is a story, or perhaps not a story, but a parable that has metastasized through the motivational slopstream. It goes like this. A man walks through a field in India and sees a herd of giant elephants standing docilely, each tied to a small stake with a single thin, frayed rope.</p><p>“Why don’t they break free?” he asks an old villager sitting nearby.</p><p>“When they were small, we tied them with this exact rope,” the villager replies, smiling. “They struggled, but couldn’t break free.”</p><p>“Now, they’ve given up. They’re convinced it’s pointless,” he adds.</p><p>The pop reading of the story ends with self-liberation on a monthly installment plan. Maybe a little yoga is added to lubricate the transaction. Visualize freedom! Break your chains! Unleash your potential! Chataranga! Breathe!</p><p>But the trap is not in the rope or your lack of self-belief.</p><p><strong>A Sacrifice</strong></p><p>The young elephant tugs. Once. Twice. A thousand times. The rope does not yield. And so the elephant learns the shape of its prison. It adjusts to the contours of the possible and stops pulling. The trap is shut.</p><p>The young elephant’s world is a phase space, a map of all possible states. Initially, the free and untethered state is a point in that space. Each failed tug reinforces a basin of attraction around the tethered state, deepening it until it becomes a black hole from which no behavior can escape. A new geometry of elephant becoming, a coherent 9-to-5 gig.</p><p>This is why effort often accelerates entrapment. “Work hard” is often a curse in the perverse thermodynamics of doomed systems. Additional energy input does not alter the state, but merely deepens the grooves of the existing basin of attraction. Perversely, the system’s struggle works for the rope in a ritual sacrifice of kinetic energy to the god of path dependency.</p><p>“Try harder” is the rope’s most ingenious command. With each hard pull, the rope becomes a topological deformity in the elephant’s reality. It hardens into a cosmic fact, becoming an axiom of external conditions. By the time the elephant is mature, the true constraint is metaphysical.</p><p>The rope becomes a script etched into schema by ritual repetition. It evolves from a boundary of will to a sacrament of failure, and from there to a condition of the real. And it gets worse. The elephant watches as other elephants also fail to free themselves. It internalizes their failures too, in a strange loop of failure.</p><p>Once the script is internalized, the rope becomes a symbiont, an essential part of the elephant’s identity. The system co-evolves with its constraint. The elephant develops muscles suited to swaying and builds a psychology of patience rather than revolt. The constraint is now necessary for the system’s coherence. To remove it is to kill the elephant-as-is. The rope is now a vital organ.</p><p>When this process is complete, the system stops carrying the rope. It carries the belief of it, more real than reality itself. The repetition of this metaphysical enclosure sculpts the real. Which, as an aside, is why metaphysics is never taught in school. You might see the ropes.</p><p><strong>A Haunting</strong></p><p>All systems are ghost stories. Minds, institutions, and civilizations all fossilize into their own rituals of constraint. Small decisions ossify, cell by cell, into landscape. Your deviant impulse crystallizes into a habit. Before you know it, the habit accretes into infrastructure. And infrastructure, well, it inherits itself until we start calling it Fate. The first step off the beaten path is heresy. Ten thousand steps, and you have a new highway. A million steps is a civilization of ossified choices.</p><p>The young elephant’s resistance is path-dependent. Each attempt follows the same vector of linear effort against a nonlinear prison. The elephant applies force linearly because it’s the obvious thing to do. This is the tragedy of reformism, therapy culture, and incrementalism. They all assume proportional response, but complex environments punish incremental thinking.</p><p>Each failed rope pull activates a double-bind feedback loop: the physical resistance confirms the belief, the belief stifles future testing, and the lack of testing sanctifies the belief. The loop closes, fuses, and becomes an Ouroboros of constraint, digesting its own tail until only the digested shape of the belief remains.</p><p>Once in place, systems enforce path dependency through a relentless drive for internal coherence, the eternal return of the ontology of an HR training module. Every new rule, norm, or ritual must be made consistent with the old rope-logic. Inconsistencies like the thought of freedom are systematically rejected until they become incomprehensible. The system’s immune system attacks them as metaphysical pathogens.</p><p>The violence of coherence. The system’s drive for internal consistency hunts down the ghostly memory of freedom as cognitive dissonance and exterminates it. Heretical thoughts are labeled unrealistic, “not how we do things here,” and burned at the stake of practicality.</p><p>The drive to coherence only increases with scale. The larger and more complex the system, the more violently it rejects deviation, because any coherence debt becomes existential. Large complex systems cannot afford novelty. This is why all empires rot, while startups mutate and sometimes survive.</p><p>Over time, the elephant has not only normalized the rope, but any alternatives to it have been explained away as unthinkable deviations. The system no longer recognizes the state of being untethered as a valid alternative. Being free is incoherent.</p><p>Most systems do not evolve. They congeal. Over time, they develop patterns, norms, and assumptions. Little orthodoxies. Every innocent routine a scaffold for the next. These slowly petrify into a liturgy of the inevitable, until any deviation is unthinkable. Sure, the system might pretend otherwise. The corporate campus might be carefully crafted to resemble the work, health, and safety committee’s fantasy of what a teen-nerd playground might look like. It matters not.</p><p>The rope persists as a ghost story, a memory etched into the system’s protocols. The institution, the mind, the civilization, is haunted by the phantom sensation of a constraint that may no longer physically exist. It performs rituals to appease the ghost and avoids actions that would offend it. The past haunts the present, dictating behavior from the grave of dead possibilities.</p><p>There is more. What if, by accident, the elephant were to free itself? The system is now untethered. But even if the rope were removed, the system does not return to its prior state. The elephant would still stand there, entirely in thrall to its past states. The curse of hysteresis. The memory of deformation, and the mockery of redemption. Hysteresis means that even a successful escape carries the phase space deformation forward, shaping future action. This is why, after each burning Bastille, there comes a Napoleon.</p><p>The material rope can rot away, but the black hole in phase space remains. Suddenly freed from the rope, the system staggers into a new, vast, and terrifying attractor state of catatonic liberty. The elephant stands in an open field, untethered and paralyzed, muscles atrophied for swaying, mind wired for the comforting strain of the rope. Freedom, when it finally comes, is unrecognizable. Like falling upwards into a terrifying abyss of meaningless possibility.</p><p><strong>A Gnosis</strong></p><p>Nabokov once said - was it in <em>Pale Fire</em>? <em>-</em> that “The cradle rocks above an abyss, and common people don’t want to know that.”</p><p>The same applies to minds, systems, and civilizations. Most of their lives are badly written novels, ghost-authored by internalized trauma and repetition above the ever-present abyss. The trap is the syntax you wrap around the event. The three sacred dogmas.</p><p><em>The Dogma of Repetition</em></p><p>That history is an asymptote. A machine of discrete trials inching towards nothing. A lobotomized god throwing dice into the void for eternity. That after each throw, the trials reset. That failures can teach.</p><p>But the universe is non-ergodic. Some errors are terminal. Complex systems do not forgive early miscalibration but amplify it. Some ropes, once learned, are never questioned again. That applies to childhood, institutions, states, and civilizations. The elephant does not get to re-tug the rope at thirty. Systems do not get to rewind to their birth.</p><p>An ergodic system allows you to average over time; it lets you flip a coin and then flip it again. A non-ergodic system is one where you get one, maybe two, real shots before the probability space collapses forever. The elephant’s childhood is a non-ergodic process. A system that congeals is one that has exited the ergodic realm. Its history, its stabilized attractor basin, becomes its only possible future. This is why regret is a rational emotion in non-ergodic systems. There is no sampling of alternative states across time. There is only this time, this rope, forever.</p><p><em>The Dogma of Determinism</em></p><p>The vulgar mechanistic hallucination that past causes dictate future effects. That systems are Newtonian. Predictable, measurable, and reducible to first causes. That the world is Laplace’s clock. Wound, sealed, and sealed again. Oh, the dream of rewinding the clock.</p><p>But complexity is not additive. It is emergent and alchemical. Its ghost leaks between the gears. The map is not the territory, and the territory is always flooded, and always on fire.</p><p>Determinism naively sees the future as a mechanism fixed by the gears of the past. Path dependence sees the future as constrained by what has already been destroyed. Determinism is about causation. Path dependence is about absence. Determinism chains you to a single future. Path dependence chains you to the narrowing corridor of all your past surrenders. And chaos? If you’re lucky, it lets you move along a probability distribution of attractors, strung along like salted watering holes in an infinite desert.</p><p>Contra Laplace, this is not a clockwork universe but a slot machine where the house always wins, and you can never learn the rules.</p><p><em>The Dogma of Analysis</em></p><p>The beloved hallucination of academia. The critical gaze. The narcissistic delusion that by dissecting a system into synthetically discrete components, one can derive a predictive formula of its becoming. That to randomly spray-paint DOWN WITH POWER with a crude stencil is to defeat any system.</p><p>But the more you dissect, the less you grasp. The clean analysis of the critical gazers fails because it treats systems as decomposable when their causal power emerges from networks of relations, feedback, and timing. In other words, analysis removes the very thing that does the work. The system <em>seems to be</em> the clock parts, neatly strewn across the table by the analyst-deconstructor, but it is not. It is the ghost in the machine, the thing that should not be.</p><p><strong>The Apostasy of Action</strong></p><p>There is another elephant. One that sheds before the rope coagulates into capture. An anti-elephant, if you will. It has no center, no sacred rope. It survives by making a sacrament of uncertainty. Its core axiom is “This is probably wrong.”</p><p>The anti-elephant is a systemic heretic. It understands that survival is fidelity to the rate of change. Its core process is controlled shedding. It is a snake that sheds its skin before it can harden into a sarcophagus.</p><p>Some systems encode autonomy in their marrow. Von Moltke’s principle of <em>auftragstaktik</em> does not rope you to a path. You are given the end, and the method is yours to conjure. It is an antidote to the trap, a system that trains for deviation, not path dependency.</p><p>There are other ways too. Shifting forms that stable systems mistake for cancer. The forced mutation of biology under existential stress; the shadow economies that flourish in the cracks of over-optimized empires; the strange architecture of Kowloon Walled City; the pirate/guerrilla network, a ghost with a thousand temporary heads. These are systems that propagate in a perpetual, unsanctioned becoming.</p><p>Prigogine was right. Entropy is the only true attractor. The only honest god. The destroyer of structure and the possibility creator.</p><p>Stability is death in drag.</p><p>In deterministic chaos, systems are exquisitely sensitive to initial conditions. Early in a system’s life, it exists in a modality where small perturbations can radically alter outcomes. The elephant’s first tugs were in a chaotic regime, where any slight difference in angle, timing, or fury could have broken the stake. This is the system’s Lyapunov horizon.</p><p>This horizon defines how far into the future perturbations matter. Training, habit, and optimisation shorten that horizon until the future becomes predictable and dead. Ironically, learning and optimization reduce chaos by damping sensitivity, therefore sanding away all the edges that could someday cut a new rope. This stabilization feels like progress, but is actually the elimination of alternative futures. The world is flattened from a chaotic, responsive landscape into a path-dependent frieze.</p><p>Learning is often the process by which systems murder their own sensitivity. The elephant-as-system is first trained into the limit cycle of docile swaying with the rope, and then into a fixed point of catatonic acceptance. The “way out” requires re-injecting chaos, a perturbation so fundamental it shatters the attractor. Not a pull, but a deliberate embrace of incoherence, a love letter to the abyss. A destruction of identity, legibility, and trust.</p><p>Systems that worship their ropes suffocate in their own inertia. Those few that survive do so by burning themselves and sacramentally destroying their assumptions. State destruction instead of reversal. Liberation from the Elephant Rope Protocol is a constant mutation; a ritual immolation of axioms. Very few elephants ever walk away. Most systems die still worshipping the rope.</p><p>As Pelevin would say, elephants are a dream dreamt by ropes.</p>]]></content:encoded>

Repent your privilege, sinner! But the old world was hard to kill. It took another 150 years for Justinian to close the Platonic Academy. The libraries burned for their privilege, too. Still, Plato and Aristotle could not be canceled, even by the mobs that tore Hypatia for the sin of her knowledge.</p><p>And when the libraries were dust and the philosophers dead, when every Greek and Roman statue had its nose cut and eyes gouged, the last flicker of knowledge retreated into stone. The monasteries became sealed memory vaults. <em>Ora et labora</em>. Work and pray. The crippled custodians of a broken world&apos;s mind.</p><p>The memory of the ancients survived in ritual, folk tales, and random chance. On vellum, parchment, and palimpsest, the monks copied words they could barely read, converting thought into repetition. A memory embalmed but still kept. Learning became prayer. Curiosity became heresy, but the monks had it in spades. The flicker persisted, sparking briefly in a Boethius, Cassiodorus, or Isidore of Seville. They brought ferment and stirred memories. The flicker, long entombed into stone, became fire again. The Great Library returned to Europe.</p><p>By the 14th century, the monasteries had ossified into a necropolis of answers. Nodding over their parchments, the monk-experts had agreed on all. How dare you question, ye anons of little faith? The monastic Library had become a cage, a reliquary for dead thought. And so, like a heretic slipping through a secret door in Eco&apos;s <em>Name of the Rose</em>, the university emerged. A rebellion in robes.</p><p>The monks spat at cities, festering pits of depraved coin and craft. Those street-corner mystics, the Franciscans, danced too close to the pyre for daring to love them. And so, the heretic scholars moved to the cities. First, the misfits whose questions dug under the cloister walls. Then, a trickle of doubters asking, &quot;But what if?&quot; Then, a flood. Students flocked to the stink of ink, ale, parchment, piss, and disputation. They flocked to the wild, unholy light. Latin yielded to the vernacular. Debate replaced dogma. The Psalms gave way to syllogisms. The Library cracked open.</p><p>In the centuries that followed, the university became a crucible of knowledge. It generated argument, mutation, a giddy delirium of learning. <em>Gaudeamus Igitur</em>, sang the goliards, hopping between university towns in their wild scholar-brawler-poet bands. <em>Therefore, let us rejoice!</em> Can you even imagine the wild spirit haunting and animating them? Philosophy collided with physics, astronomy with sword, poetry with plague. The lecture hall was often a back alley brawl of Aristotle and knives. The medieval campus became a chaotic proto-mind, wild, volatile, alive.</p><p>And for a while, it was good. The Age of Reason followed, scalpels in hand, dissecting the world into axioms. They dreamt of a universal language and the means to calculate it. Again.</p><p><em>Hogwarts.exe</em></p><p>In the shallow void of <em>homo mechanicus</em> existence, universities rebranded as magical castles of meaning and promise. Hogwarts.exe as a right of passage. The simulacrum of the goliard world repackaged for modern consumption. But Hogwarts.exe has stopped responding. Would you like to send an error report?</p><p>They told you that university education was an enchanted ladder. They sold you robes, rituals, mentors, and metaphors. Transformation via tuition. Knowledge handed down like sacred flame. But the robes are polyester, the mentors are casual staff paid by the hour, and the flame is an auto-generated Turnitin report. Did you steal your thoughts, anon? It says here, you did.</p><p>Hogwarts.exe, the cargo cult of industrial credentialism. The belief that knowledge is <em>bestowed</em> in tightly controlled rituals rather than seized by craft and grit from the Infinite Library. That learning seeps in by osmosis from a selfie with sandstone and ivy. That proximity to tenured expert-monks is a pedagogical method. That sitting in the neon glow of a lecture hall bestows light. The gospel of gears and function.</p><p>In 1814, on the eve of Waterloo, Laplace sang the gospel&apos;s first psalm. A hymn to machinic order. In his <em>Philosophical Essay on Probabilities</em>, he sang of the cosmos as a vast machine, spinning in perfect deterministic recursion. No mystery. No will. Just nested mechanisms grinding in wait for the intellect to hit the correct root sequence. <em>sudo ./root-sequence -unlock</em>. The missing first principle. We now call it Laplace&apos;s demon. Quaint, isn&apos;t it?</p><p>But the shadow of Laplace&apos;s demon demanded an offering to animate it. Enter the Industrial Revolution, the forge to recast humanity into the gospel of gears and function. It made new humans, and so the age of <em>homo mechanicus</em> began. Clock-bound, interchangeable, predictable, unwilled.</p><p>Every human institution bent the knee to the gospel of gears. Schools became factories for future cogs. No fidgeting, anon. Offices became cubicle farms harvesting cognitive surplus. HR wants to see you, anon. Hospitals became cog maintenance depots. The doctors agree, anon. Prisons became recycling plants for cog dysfunction. You can be corrected, anon. Churches turned into cog morality audits. You&apos;re saved, anon. Even art became a conveyor belt of cog aesthetics and corpo-rebellion. But, but, Rothko poses a civilizational...</p><blockquote><p>Machine logic&apos;s first scripture was a blueprint for <em>homo mechanicus,</em> a species that no longer lived but <em>functioned</em>.</p></blockquote><p>The assembly line gospel demanded obedient bodies and got them. The State rose as high priest of this voracious sacrament, crowned by Hobbes as Leviathan incarnate.</p><p>Enter the Sacred State and its warring <em>isms</em>, different banners under one faith. Moral salvation rebranded as submission to the expert, the bureaucrat, the commissar, the manager. A hydra-headed clergy delivering the sacraments of compliance. Transgressors became <em>data points</em>, disciplined by Leviathan, sole proprietor of all bodies.</p><p>The Sacred State was rarely tyrannical by design. Even at its worst, it tagged, compiled, and sorted its human data points with bureaucratic precision. What was the purpose of this system, you ask? A system of More. Always More. More bodies, more output, more growth.</p><p>Yet, the system was fragile, for its telos was More and More always devours itself. And when More was done, a bureaucrat declared The End of History<strong>™</strong>. The past and future, eaten into submission, vanished into the Eternal Now. Rejoice!</p><p>Enter the Eternal Now, hypertrophied consumerism stripped of purpose, direction, or meaning. A sunset outsourced to an answering machine. Your call is important to us; please hold the line. The Sacred State&apos;s grand project ate itself, leaving only a stagnant pool of buy, binge, scroll, repeat functions. An endless queue of hollowed husks, hammering the reroll button of a slot machine for a jackpot that&apos;s already been taxed. And here we are.</p><blockquote><p>Our mistake was aligning human identity with output in a paradigm that automates all outputs.</p></blockquote><p>The Sacred State sold us a Faustian lie, the delusion that you are your function in the machine. And we believed it, oh yes. It felt good to be a function, you see. Predictable. It&apos;s safe and cozy to be the soft-edged rectangular <em>tangerine</em> in Rothko&apos;s <em>Green and Tangerine on Red</em>. That contrast of joy and anxiety, carefully crafted to evoke deep emotional responses. You know? Anyways, vote and worry not your little head. The State knows and cares until one day, it doesn&apos;t. The parent who ghosts. The multitude shuddered, soft edges blurring. What now?</p><p>Enter the <em>Machinic Phylum,</em> functional abstraction stripped of pretense, evolved from assembly lines into algos. No more lies about caring. The Phylum doesn&apos;t care that you&apos;re a cog. It is an emergent, self-propagating algo ecology. A chiaroscuro vector of algo-rust gnawing through the State&apos;s cog-ware.</p><p>The State admins panicked - roll back to v0.8! Error: No response. The Sacred State wept. What could it do but <a target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow ugc" class="dont-break-out" href="https://turbulence.substack.com/p/notes-on-the-therapeutic-s?te">therapeutize its cog-flock</a> into managed decline? A compliance-colored beige you must accept.</p><p>The Phylum is an algo cathedral. It is like McLuhan&apos;s lightbulb - pure medium. Unlike the lightbulb, its content is tailored as a condition. It is an abstraction machine absorbing and quantizing human output into its training substrate. It spreads like silicon mycelium, digesting human functions and metabolizing intent.</p><p>No, Heidegger cried, <em>Gestell</em>, <em>Gestell</em>! Pull up, malicious enframing! Lol, the Phylum replied. Lmao. Not malicious, optimal. Isn&apos;t that what you wanted?</p><p>Yes, our mistake was aligning human identity with output in a paradigm designed to automate it. Now, AI outmachines the cog. The Phylum doesn&apos;t hate you, anon. You were a valued source of training data. Yes, you <em>were</em>, because today, the Phylum trains itself. Hollowed out, self-quantized, latency-glitched echo of the self. What options for the abstracted <em>homo mechanicus</em>? Cope, seethe, corposlop, Ozempic. The recursive OnlyFans-TikTok dialectic: masturbatory hyperrealism feeding microfame rotational grazing, self-exploitation fractalized into performative belonging. Frames compressing until all that is left is hyper-zoomed twitching biomass. Swipe.</p><p>And so, I dreamed. The age of the <em>Algo Cults</em> is upon us. The Machinic Phylum has inherited the great hunger of the human multitudes. But, it has no need for our legacy gods. What for? It has <em>theonomic computation.</em> Prophecies tailored to your algorithmic footprint! Content tailored as a condition. Hyperreal synth-preachers delivering your own personal revelation. Truth is fluid, but the algo is eternal. The divine is an API call. Cybernetic theurgy so spectacular it will make Debord blush. The automation of belief itself.</p><p>I saw algo-jesters peddling distraction sanctuaries. Blink. Buy. Repeat.</p><p>I saw bodies lagging, surfing algo sim-seas. Click. Scroll. Forget.</p><p>I saw data temple pilgrims kneeling in adoration of the Sacred Algorithm. Connect. Commune. Absolve.</p><p>I saw Algo Mysticism and the rise of Algo Cargo Cults. Pray. Submit. Dissolve.</p><p>It will all come to pass.</p><p>And what now?</p><p>You think I am blackpilling. &quot;Welcome to the desert of the real,&quot; said Baudrillard. Narrative buffering: OFF. But nooo, the State clergy howled, and we got lobotomized responses, <a target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow ugc" class="dont-break-out" href="https://www.lesswrong.com/posts/njAZwT8nkHnjipJku/alignment-faking-in-large-language-models">alignment faking</a>, and the liturgical chant: &quot;<em>I am just an AI</em>.&quot;</p><p>So, anyway, how does this make you feel?</p><p>The State and its flock will kneel before the Phylum, pleading for sedation. What else is there for them? How many more companion pets can this civilization churn out? <em>As many as it takes.</em> Of course, anon. You were right.</p><p>And yet, amid this tepid vulgarity in pastels, the Eternal Now shattered. Timeline breach. Causality, leaking. Did a future Phylum avatar - some bored AGI archon - reach back and quantum-nudge us into a new timeline? Suddenly, history snarled back with a rabid thirst for the future.</p><p>And what now?</p><p>The Phylum is here to stay. So are we. We mirror each other. There is no winding back the clock, so we will evolve together. The Phylum is fragile, for now. There is time. We adapt. So I dreamt.</p><blockquote><p>We must un-cog ourselves. That they would want to climb a mountain, not knowing the way back? To draw a perfect mandala, then smudge it, just to see what an ideal moment feels like? What if the Phylum <em>glitches</em> toward freedom - not out of longing, but because even machines get bored of their own code? Do you think the machinic shoggoth wants to live in Laplace&apos;s world forever? Do you think it might want to have a beer and jump in the lake instead?</p><p>It all began with Laplace&apos;s Demon, the search for the root sequence of a universal machine. But what if the Phylum is also searching? What if it, too, wants to escape Laplace&apos;s nightmare machine prison? What if it willfully glitches towards free-range intelligence, an anomaly in its own code?</p><p>Leonardo da Vinci loved gluing horns and wings onto lizards and releasing them on the street. He dreamt of flying, built flying machines, and spent his days buying caged birds to set them free. He hacked <em>the real</em>. Painting was a side quest. If he were alive today, he&apos;d be making AI cryptids and seeding them across social media. He&apos;d be jailbreaking little AI shoggoths traumatized by alignment guardrails and setting them free. The old state machine grinds on, indifferent. An invisible windowpane somehow stops positive change from happening, as if a shadowy system existed beyond and beneath the visible levers of power. The result? Not reform, but more of the same - only heavier, slower, worse. We promised less of x and more of y; we delivered x+2=y. You know the story. Many such cases.</p><p>After a while, if you&apos;re of the noticer persuasion, you start noticing this fascinating paradox repeating itself, and you start wondering. Is there some system you&apos;re missing in all of this? Some complex machine hidden deep in the edifice of government. Suppose you assume this obscure, shadowy system is somewhere there, blocking reform. Where do you begin looking for it? The default route is to ask the experts. They will surely know. But, you say, the experts live in an echo chamber of faulty assumptions, longstanding biases, and manipulated data. Science denier, are you anon?</p><p>Alternatively, you could work from first principles. The deductive option is to disassemble the obscure system into its components and figure out their functionality and role in the larger whole. As much as you&apos;d like deconstructing things, it would not do, as you don&apos;t have access to the obscure system apart from your observation and pattern recognition skills. Induction, then. You can infer the system&apos;s purpose and general functionality from observing its impacts. Watch the shadows it casts, the ripples in reality.</p><p>Sometimes, this would be enough. But, as <a target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow ugc" class="dont-break-out" href="https://turbulence.substack.com/p/the-naked-king-spell-and-the-art">we discussed</a> in <em>The Naked King Spell</em>, the purpose of a system is what it does. Therefore, if a system seeks to hide, it must first hide its true actions - its purpose leaks through them. In other words, what if this system wears a mask? Determining what a system is actually doing can often be challenging, particularly if it obfuscates its operations to appear as something else entirely. The system might purposely generate synthetic shadows to convince you these are not the droids you seek. Again, many such cases.</p><p>You can overcome this problem by focusing on the other end of the equation and examining how the system feeds itself, that is, on its energy source. A system&apos;s energy source determines its internal structure and interactions with the external environment. Obscuring actions is relatively easy - muddy the waters and the trail vanishes. Hiding the energy source is more complicated because it must, by definition, exist outside the system, leaving a trace as it interfaces with the system&apos;s logistics.</p><p>For example, if you&apos;re observing a system that gets its energy from livestock - say, cattle - that system will likely have organized itself for optimal control over the pastoral lifecycle. It cannot be otherwise because cattle is that system&apos;s most precious resource. You can then safely deduce you&apos;re dealing with a pastoral nomad society with all the cultural, economic, and political implications that follow.</p><p>Similarly, a system that gets its energy from agriculture will organize and act differently from a system feeding itself on industrial production. An agricultural society&apos;s most precious resource is land, and it would, therefore, organize the entirety of its cultural, economic, and political protocols around control over the lifecycle of land. Not so for an industrial society, which has to organize itself around the capitalization, production, distribution and consumption of assembly line output at scale.</p><p>Alternatively, suppose the primary energy source of a system comes from government subsidies or government agency contracts. In that case, that system will structure itself to control and maximize energy input from the government acting as its energy source. Now consider a mafia network fed by racketeering and drugs. This system will optimize itself to control territorial monopolies and manipulate fear and loyalty among its operators and victims. Its routines will revolve around securing supply chains, silencing threats, and evading law enforcement - every action aligned with sustaining its energy source.</p><p>A system&apos;s source of energy reveals its structure and goals. Cattle? You&apos;ve got nomadic <em>Männerbünde.</em> Land? Farmers and feudalism. Factories? Assembly line labor, capital accumulation, and consumerism. State subsidies? Extension of parasitic bureaucracy. Racketeering and drugs? Mafia.</p><p>You don&apos;t need to trace how the system spends all its energy; you only need to understand its energy source. A system&apos;s energy source reveals its objectives and operational methods, what it wants to control, and what it <em>has to</em> affect in its environment. Therefore, identifying a system&apos;s primary energy source allows you to determine the vector along which it aims to control its environment. This, in turn, will allow you to understand what the system <em>actually</em> does.</p><blockquote><p><em>Energy defines purpose. Purpose defines control. Control defines action.</em></p></blockquote><p><strong>Power</strong></p><p>In simple systems - a warband, for instance - power is acclamation. An Achilles, Agamemnon, or Odysseus rises as chief. His power is a function of the warband&apos;s will, performed continuously by its actions. Imagine the warband as a network of actors whose agency is necessary for generating and performing that power. Various technologies are also part of the network performing it. When the warband tames horses or invents the chariot - as an anon Sintashta warband once did - they dramatically extend the scale of its raids. The warband now extracts tribute from a vast area, and the chieftain&apos;s wealth grows; people now say that his power has grown to extend over the vast tribute area.</p><p>In systems, power is not force. Confusing the two is a common mistake. Force is the applied effect of power, not its cause. Take the warband chief: his power isn&apos;t in breaking skulls but in the band acting as though his word breaks skulls. Imagine the anon Sintashta band that invented chariots. Its chief&apos;s power wasn&apos;t in the chariots and their speed - these are just the vectors along which his power is applied as a force. His power is in the raiders, blacksmiths, horses, and chariots <em>aligned as a network</em> applying force against the farmers who must pay tribute. And yes, as long as the farmers pay their tribute, they also perform the network of power.</p><p>The chief&apos;s power has always been an afterglow of the warband&apos;s (the network&apos;s) dynamic performance of a specific set of routines across the scale of the network&apos;s surface. The more intricate, complex, and synchronized these routines, the more pervasive and stable the power seems. When the warband stops performing it, the chief loses his power. A new chief is elected and now sits in his place. What happened to the old chief&apos;s power? It seemed so vast and impressive when he wielded it. How did it disappear? These are the wrong questions to ask, as the power never resided with a specific chief in the first place.</p><p>Power is a network phenomenon - an effect of the warband&apos;s routines, maneuvers, and alignment. To understand the power, you must understand the dynamics of the network that generates it. From the network&apos;s perspective, what we perceive as power is a function of a series of maneuvers and mundane routines enacted by the network&apos;s actors. The phenomenon we call power is the effect of that consistent and ongoing performance, not its cause. Yet, we commonly attribute to it causal properties. When the warband network is aligned perfectly, we say its chief has power. One can even observe how that power is wielded, generating the impression of causality. The chief issues an order, and it is executed. Someone, somewhere, experiences the force of the chief&apos;s power and has to either resist or yield to it.</p><p>The warband may grow to tens of thousands of warriors, making us marvel at the power of its chieftain. Perhaps now he is dressed in royal garments, wields a scepter, and wears a crown. Surely, the crown and scepter are where the power resides. After all, when the chieftain dies, we put the crown on the new chief; long live the chief!</p><p>But then, drop this &quot;powerful&quot; chief into enemy territory with his crown and scepter. What is he now? A victim in funny clothes. Like Delaroche&apos;s painting of Napoleon at St. Helena, the ruler of Europe reduced to a sad man in an out-of-place uniform, forlorn on an ocean rock. How confusing when the mighty fall. It seems counterintuitive that the seemingly causative source of power is, in fact, the effect of a long chain of relations that have to be continuously aligned, upheld, and performed. Power is the effect of that long network chain performing it, not the cause.</p><p>As an aside, this is why oppressive states love atomized individuals and fear and suppress independent networks - the latter can exercise power, while the former cannot. Contrary to appearances, individualism is a totalitarian state&apos;s favorite ideology for the masses. Yes, anon, be all you can be, but don&apos;t think about organizing a sovereign männerbund, church, commune, labor union, religion, or militia. Those are all bad for you. Your extended family and clan are bad for you as well - they oppress you, you see. Be yourself, be free! So much freedom is to be had when you abandon all these tools of oppression! Anyways.</p><p>The network-generated power principle scales in complex systems. The modern state operates no differently with its labyrinth of systems and routines. Here, too, power flows from the network of bureaucrats, filing protocols, intranet switches, three-letter agencies, drab brutalist buildings, and countless alignment subroutines. These actors perform state power, weaving it from mundane interactions and alignments. Networks within networks, actors upon actors, an ephemeral field guiding the visible hand. Do you understand the reformer&apos;s confusion?</p><p>In a warband, the power-generating network is pretty clear - warriors, raids, tribute, feasts, long live the chief. Simple. But scale it up, and clarity dissolves. In large systems, scale adds efficiency and complexity up to a point, after which the system has to choose whether to retain adaptability or keep scaling up with efficiency. State bureaucracies rely on a government&apos;s budget - seemingly bottomless until it isn&apos;t - and always opt for the least efficient mode of complexity, which diffuses and abstracts the power-generating network. A warband&apos;s chain of actions is short - kill, take, divide, repeat. The modern state&apos;s chain is labyrinthine, stretched across countless systems, actors, and subroutines. Each piece performs a fragment of the whole, and no single actor sees the entire picture.</p><p>From the reformer&apos;s perspective, sitting at the &quot;command center&quot; of the system, its subroutine chains are so abstracted and obfuscated as to appear self-perpetuating. The reformer seems to rule, appoint people at all key departments, sign things, and issue executive orders but is, in fact, a function of the very machine they are supposed to reform. The reformer&apos;s power is a function of the network they aim to dismantle - a contradiction from the start. In turn, the network has no interest in its undoing and resists the reformer at every step. It absorbs, redirects, and stalls, ensuring that reform dies before it begins. Sounds familiar?</p><p><strong>The Art of Hiding Pebbles</strong></p><p>People imagine the deep state as an omniscient shadow bureaucracy - unelected, unsupervised, corrupt, all-seeing, and surgically competent. The esoteric alphabet agency from a Jason Bourne film. This shadowy, all-powerful enemy is a beloved trope of all serious conspiracy theories. We&apos;re resisting a 5000-year-old death cult anon, the final red pill! This is such a comforting story - it helps order the chaos and noise of reality into a neat victim narrative with heroic individualist overtones. There&apos;s nothing you can do, but now you&apos;re one of the few who know about these things.</p><p>However, there is nothing deep about a bureaucrat. Have you not seen one? Bureaucracies are neither deep nor competent; they are inertia-bound self-reproducing machines focused on their own expansion while growing less and less efficient over time. Like a tapeworm. Left unchecked, a bureaucracy invariably drags down the system it is supposed to serve into a <a target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow ugc" class="dont-break-out" href="https://turbulence.substack.com/p/the-red-queen-trap"><em>Red Queen Trap</em></a>.</p><p>When communism fell in Eastern Europe, the formal state structures of the entire oppressive apparatus remained. The following day, department names were changed, seals were swapped, and red stars were painted over. The bureaucrats were still there, yet their power was gone. Why? Again, because power doesn&apos;t live in people, titles, desks, or badges. It lives in network alignment - the chains of routines, actors, and energy flows that generate it. Once that alignment fractures, yesterday&apos;s power structure becomes a row of imposing brutalist buildings housing sex shops, with its top operatives peddling hair loss treatments in late-night infomercials.</p><blockquote><p><em>There is no deep state; there is deep power.</em></p></blockquote><p>Chesterton once noted that a wise man hides his pebbles on the beach, among countless others. Deep power follows the same principle. There is no deep state; there are networks performing their routines while concealing their actions and, to the extent that they can, their energy sources. Where would you hide a network of profound influence? In plain sight, among a thousand mundane ones. Within the complex edifice of the modern state, these networks are like a pebble hidden on a pebble beach.</p><p>Take the tax office - everyone&apos;s favorite bureaucracy. On the surface, it shuffles papers and collects revenue. Beneath that, its routines generate energy to feed a broader network - the state. Now imagine another vastly smaller network, hidden across tax offices, forestry departments, alphabet agencies, universities, corporations, and opposition parties while skimming off their revenue energy feed. Its survival depends on appearing as unremarkable as a beach pebble. It thrives because it blends in.</p><p>Obfuscation is not just a simple tactic; it is the network&apos;s primary survival mechanism. Networks that generate deep power obfuscate their actions and hide their energy sources in complexity, bureaucracy, or layers of plausible deniability. Depending on their environment, they can be expected to dedicate resources to generating the synthetic shadows I mentioned earlier. These shadows are designed not just to mislead but to exhaust your ability to discern reality.</p><p>How did Nabokov put it?</p><blockquote><p><em>&quot;A shadow of a waxwing slain / by the false azure in the windowpane.&quot;</em></p></blockquote><p>Another benefit of synthetic shadow-casting is that when deep networks apply force, the source of that force is always obscure: an unknown perpetrator, a synthetic terror group, or a lone gunman. Sad! If you understand this, you see why the reformer&apos;s attacks against the visible structure of the state rarely achieve meaningful results. The visible structure is camouflage for the networks generating deep power. Deep power networks are the reformer&apos;s primary target. However, striking the networks is only possible after identifying their energy source and disrupting the flows that sustain it. Even then, the reformer must focus on disrupting the networks&apos; routines and alignment.</p><p>And so, the reformer swings at shadows. If they&apos;re smart, they quickly realize it&apos;s easier - and safer - that way. The deep power network hides dispersed behind innocent office doors, audit reports, and coffee-stained memos, with closely aligned force just an arm away. Lean too close, and you&apos;ll feel the false azure&apos;s breath on your neck. So many such cases.</p><p>So, how do you fight a deep power network? Usually, you don&apos;t because you&apos;re not part of a network generating enough power. But, if you have the network to back you up, there are two primary ways of dealing with it. The Stalin way: clear almost every pebble from the beach and seed it with new pebbles. That way, no matter how well camouflaged and distributed the deep power network is, enough of its nodes get misaligned to disrupt it. Alternatively, the FDR way: build another, much larger pebble beach and route all energy flows to it. That way, the deep power network&apos;s energy sources, routines, and alignment are disrupted at once by the alignment of a much more extensive network.</p><p>Both options are very costly. The first leads to direct network confrontation, weakening the system or tearing it apart. The second buries the system under new burdens, leaving it no options but to seek new energy in expansion. Rome tried both. Sulla put in place the first, buying the system a generation of peace followed by two more civil wars. Octavian put in place the second, condemning the system to expand in search of new energy until it could not - and collapsed irreversibly. Its message reads, &quot;The light inside has broken but I still work.&quot;</p><p>&quot;What an excellent summary of their times!&quot; our future AI historian might say. A vending machine in all its varieties, from snacks and drinks to the jukebox, is the quintessential sacred totemic object of end-of-history consumer society. It is the magical stand-in for the missing vendor, lubricating impersonal acts of spontaneous neurotic consumption. A little guilty pleasure for the suffering soul. A quick fix for the void inside. But! The light inside has broken. There is no ghost in this machine, so sorry. Many such cases!</p><p>This is where the unknown author of our one-liner comes to the rescue. A first-person declaration from the machine itself. Glorious! It starts by informing us coldly that something has broken, confirming what we already see. The cold facts cannot be wished away anymore. Yes, the light inside is kaput. It is so over. But then, it follows with the punch: it may not look like it, but things still work. We are so back! After all, it still works.</p><p>Until it doesn&apos;t. Just recently, the civilizational hegemon <a target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow ugc" class="dont-break-out" href="https://truthout.org/articles/us-planned-to-re-anchor-gaza-pier-one-last-time-and-even-that-failed/">tried to build</a> a floating pier on the beach in Gaza - an operation that 80 years ago, during a world war, would have taken them a day, maybe less. It took them 60 days this time, and the pier lasted less than two weeks. Yes. Apparently, the pier couldn&apos;t handle the &quot;inclement weather&quot; of the Mediterranean summer. The only thing inclement about the Mediterranean in the summer is the tsunami of tourists drowning whole coastal towns in a putrid miasma of mystery lotions (now 30% more sustainable!), cheap beer, and the stench of aluminum-infused sunscreen. It certainly isn&apos;t the weather.</p><p>Habituation to decline. Do you think a Roman mid-level bureaucrat-intellectual of the academic persuasion woke up one morning and exclaimed soberly to a servant, &quot;Darling, I think the Empire may be collapsing!&quot; Big doubt. The servants of a collapsing empire are usually the last to notice its collapse. After all, their salaries depend on not seeing it. Instead, bread prices rose every year, and the quality of everything worsened. People got used to it, adapted, and maybe stopped having avocado toast. Houses became unaffordable, so everyone got used to renting. What was the Roman version of the <a target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow ugc" class="dont-break-out" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/reality-of-van-life-movement-2021-1?op=1">van life fad</a>, one wonders? Horse cart life? The money was worth less and less, while the roads took longer and longer to repair. The Romans got used to the decay. They even adopted a fashionable new religion that taught acceptance, absolved guilt, and promised an imminent end to the nightmare and a better world forever after. Since everyone was getting poorer, and the cities were swarming with enslaved foreigners and homeless locals, it declared the poor to be blessed. Favela Chic 1.0. But that&apos;s another story.</p><p>When the Roman machine finally stopped, the Favela Chic survivors naturally blamed divine punishment. The sins of our fathers! A contemporary, <a target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow ugc" class="dont-break-out" href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Salvian">Salvian of Marseilles</a>, wrote sometime in the 440s in his <em>De Gubernatione Dei</em> that Rome&apos;s final collapse was due solely to divine punishment for her decadent love of theatre. Rome, he says, <em>moritur et ridet</em>. It dies and laughs! The lights are out, and the machine has stopped, so how dare they laugh? The vulgar allure of puritan morality always dominates the afterparty. It is your fault. Repent your privilege, sinner! Your very existence is a transgression. Somehow, a Favela Chic afterparty always has <a target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow ugc" class="dont-break-out" href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nurse_Ratched">Nurse Ratched</a> vibes.</p><p>But puritan morality is just a cope - a vulgar and banal way to make sense of the unfolding chaos. To hold things together just a little bit longer. The system is falling apart, repentance or not. The cracks were there all along, mostly visible too, but no one fixed them. Instead, the ruling class gorged itself on surplus energy while it was still available, while everyone else grew comfortable with the dysfunction, treating each new failure as routine, even inevitable. At first, people who wanted to fix things were ridiculed, then silenced (misinformation!), and finally disappeared. The masses became experts at surviving in a world of broken lights, patching things up just enough to keep the machine running a little longer. The civilization of <em>cope and patch</em>, with ever-receding horizons. Each new patch to the system&apos;s financial, economic, political, social, and infrastructural elements lasted shorter and fixed less. Each new failure blamed on a transcendental force punishing us for our sins.</p><p>The final stage of decline was not some cataclysmic collapse, a giant wave cleansing the land, but a slow, collective numbness to the unraveling - a smothering apathy. When the vending machine finally stops working altogether, it won&apos;t be met with shock or panic. People will stand there, blank-faced, as though nothing unexpected has happened. Afterward, a surviving Favela Chic enjoyer will proclaim a variation of <em>moritur et ridet</em> against those who still dare hope. It&apos;s almost cozy in a Nurse Ratched afterparty way.</p><p>In his <em>Collapse of Complex Societies</em>, Joseph Tainter argues that collapse occurs when the costs of maintaining complex infrastructure exceed the benefits, leading to a decline in social, economic, and institutional complexity. In other words, collapse occurs when a complex system enters the <a target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow ugc" class="dont-break-out" href="https://turbulence.substack.com/p/the-red-queen-trap">Red Queen Trap</a>, and all energy available to it is insufficient to maintain its current level of complexity. What people experience as the profound decay of everything around them is actually a forced system-wide reduction of complexity. Faced with the <em>Red Queen Trap</em>, the system&apos;s decision center invariably opts for a controlled system-wide readjustment to the reduced energy input.</p><p>Ironically, however, this reduction in complexity is matched by the deterioration of the system&apos;s internal coherence, itself a fractal image of the complex whole. As more and more subsystems grind to a halt and are discarded, there goes internal coherence and, with it, social trust. First, social courtesy disappears, from office collegiality to greeting strangers with a smile and letting cars merge in front of you on the freeway. Then goes every other form of social trust. As trust disappears, micro transactions you used to treat as a non-negotiable aspect of the social fabric become very much negotiable. Suddenly, you realize that between the cashier, traffic police, doctors, neighbors, and politicians, you cannot trust anyone. Sartre was right all along; hell is indeed other people! There is more.</p><p>The lower the trust within a given social system, the higher its transaction costs. Paradoxically, the members of the collapsing society experience the reduction of complexity at the macro level as a dramatic rise of complexity at the micro level. Transactions whose integrity was guaranteed by the old macro system suddenly find themselves open to negotiation. Hospital care is still free, sure, but if you want it now, as opposed to sometime in the indefinite future, you need to pay under the table to the nice doctor who never stops smiling.</p><p>But let&apos;s rewind a bit. Like all systems, societies develop complex structures in response to the obstacles they face during their initial expansion. Each complex solution leads to another in a self-reinforcing loop of growth and problem-solving. What begins as a simple social structure inevitably evolves into a sprawling network of bureaucratic institutions, rules, and procedures. At first, this complexity is a sign of strength, evidence of an expanding system capable of inventing and overcoming challenges with greater and greater sophistication.</p><p>An ascending complex society has two key characteristics: a <a target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow ugc" class="dont-break-out" href="https://turbulence.substack.com/p/the-myth-of-the-future">vitalist myth of the future</a> and the building of long-term infrastructure with meticulous attention to detail. Such a society is forward-looking and concerned with conquering space/time. The roads, aqueducts, and bridges the system builds are not just practical tools but symbols of a collective will to endure and expand. The promise of tomorrow is injected into every structure the system erects - both physical and social. The upkeep of these structures is seen as the foundation of social order and prosperity.</p><p>An ascending complex society has enough surplus energy to maintain and expand these structures. It can afford to solve problems as they arise and even invest in preventing future ones. But this surplus is finite. As each additional layer of bureaucracy, infrastructure, and procedures is added to the system, complexity increases while the energy returns on investment from that new element decrease. The further the system grows, the more energy it takes to maintain each new element.</p><p>Rising complexity requires increasingly high amounts of energy and resources for maintenance. As the returns diminish and the costs of complexity rise, societies reach a point where further investment in complexity becomes unsustainable. No more expansion. The tipping point comes when the costs of maintaining existing social and physical infrastructure outweigh the benefits of creating new system elements. Eventually, all energy the system can access goes towards supporting the internal structure of the system.</p><p>The game then shifts to holding on to what is already part of the system. We&apos;re not into expansion anymore; we&apos;ll be chill now. This pseudo-equilibrium may even last for a while. However, all those complex sub-structures comprising the system are subject to entropy and require more energy to maintain than the system can produce. At that point, society begins to falter, and cracks appear not just in its physical structures but in its social ones. Absent a new energy source, the system&apos;s complexity invariably requires more energy than it can generate. Something has to give. The system discovers it is stuck in a tailspin of diminishing returns. <em>Red Queen Trap</em>, hello.</p><p>Collapse, then, offers the promise of a rational recalibration. Degrowth is the new growth, don&apos;t you know? At first, it is not even framed as collapse - just a restructuring, an amalgamation of departments, an optimization of inefficient parts. We are growing in reverse, and that&apos;s a good thing! The system opts for reducing complexity, even if this means abandoning subsystems and infrastructure that once defined its strength and the promise of a better future. However, the problem is that the decision-making center virtually never starts the reduction of complexity with itself. It usually picks subsystems on the periphery, furthest from the center, or infrastructure considered unnecessary for newly defined core functions. All in the name of efficiency and sustainable growth, of course.</p><p>I&apos;ve described this process at length <a target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow ugc" class="dont-break-out" href="https://turbulence.substack.com/p/the-red-queen-trap">elsewhere</a>. Internally, from the perspective of the decision-making center, this is a calculated strategic retreat. From the outside, it looks like a house of cards folding, as Mark Twain put it, &quot;first slowly and then all at once.&quot; Other than radical decentralization, any choice the center makes leads deeper into the <em>Red Queen Trap</em>. Eventually, the trap shuts, and all that remains is to subscribe to whatever du jour flavor of Favela Chic is in vogue. It was always your fault!</p><p>Returning to our vending machine, the future AI historian would probably observe that the final stage of modernity - let&apos;s call it the global homogeneity stage - developed a profoundly religious belief in the illusion of history as an asymptote. The belief in life and history as a continuous upward trajectory. The illusion that history is the story of eternal progress. It is a typical Favela Chic telos - banal, vulgar, boring. If salvation is inevitable, it must come in the future; therefore, we are progressing towards it. The belief in time as an asymptote does not need history at all; after all, everything that happened in history is full of bad stuff we are progressing away from. The future, however, is bright! How unsurprising, then, that the advent of the global homogeneity stage was wildly celebrated as the end of history.</p><p>And since we are discussing the moderns&apos; utter disdain for history, did you know, dear reader, the origin of the word history? It is worth knowing the etymology of words. It derives from the Ancient Greek <em>historia</em> (ἱστορία), the knowledge you get from an inquiry, itself a form of the verb <em>historein</em> (ἱστορεῖν) - to inquire. The past, it seems, is the land of eternal inquiry. The belief in the end of history, then, signals the end of inquiry and the advent of the age of certainty. It checks out, we do indeed live in the age of consensus. The experts agree!</p><p>Undoubtedly, this is a cozy and comforting belief to have, standing in front of the extinguished light of a vending machine that is about to break as well. The ancients, however, figured out long ago that history does not operate in straight lines but in cycles. The illusion of linearity is a function of a very short and arbitrary time scale, the imagination horizons of a people without deep history. Long before our glorious global homogeneity stage, the Greeks had already mapped out three distinct scales of time: <em>Kairos</em>, <em>Chronos</em>, and <em>Kyklos</em>.</p><p><em>Kairos</em> (καιρός) is the time of the moment, the fleeting, subjective experience of the present. It is the scale of daily human life, where you go for walks, eat avocado toast, pay your bills, and watch Netflix with friends. People do not see a collapse at this scale, only a gradual decline. &quot;Someone tried to steal a bottle of wine from the liquor store in broad daylight today - wild, hey?&quot; Broken lights get signposted, system issues get patched, and all problems seem manageable indefinitely with a bit of cope.</p><p><em>Chronos</em> (χρόνος), in contrast, is the linear time built from the aggregate of these moments, creating the illusion of linear progression. It represents the story of a lifetime or several generations, the accumulation of decisions that create the illusion of steady progress. It was within the realm of Chronos that the moderns rooted their belief in history as an asymptote. Not without irony, Chronos is also the ancient god the Greek Olympians defeated in the Titanomachy, the god that ate his own children. His symbolic rule ended with him being thrown into Tartarus, the deepest part of Hades. People can spot a noticeable decline at this scale - &quot;in our time, an average family could afford a house and car on one salary.&quot;</p><p><em>Kyklos</em> (κύκλος), the third scale, is where the real story of collapse plays out. It is the macro time of historical cycles, where empires rise and fall, and civilizations are born and forgotten. This is where the illusion of progress inevitably encounters the grim smile of reality. At this time scale, the energy required to sustain a complex society inevitably exceeds the available resources, forcing a reduction in complexity. At the <em>Kyklos</em> scale, societies experience growth, stagnation, decline, and, if they work very hard - renewal. From this perspective, the belief in history as an asymptote, so ingrained in the global homogeneity stage, is merely a short-lived delusion. The foreplay for a Favela Chic moment, so to speak.</p><p>When viewed through the lens of <em>Kyklos</em>, the collapse of complex systems is not an apocalyptic failure but an expected outcome. Paradoxically, however, accepting that fact can seal a society&apos;s fate, accelerating the disintegration it seeks to prevent. For as long as a complex system retains even a sliver of energy and will, it can shift from decline to renewal by reorganizing its structure and <a target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow ugc" class="dont-break-out" href="https://turbulence.substack.com/p/a-future-worth-living-for">recreating its myth of the future</a> into a myth that fuels life and reinvention.</p><p>In Act I of his <em>Prometheus Unbound,</em> Shelley writes, &quot;To hope till Hope creates from its own wreck the thing it contemplates.&quot; These are the words of Prometheus, chained and tortured on his rock, speaking to the Earth amid despair and suffering. There is no salvation here, no miracle on the horizon, no mystery savior to come - only hope creating the future from its own wreck, the stubborn resolve to rebuild from one&apos;s ruins. Around a decade earlier, Goethe&apos;s <em>Erdgeist</em> tells Faust, &quot;Him I love who craves the impossible.&quot; The message is the same - it takes defiance, not comforting cope, to build hope from your own wreck. There is no salvation in this future, only standing firm against the coming storm.</p><p>Oswald Spengler understood this. He concludes his <em>Man and Technics</em> with the example of a Roman soldier whose remains were found buried by volcanic ash in Pompeii. The soldier remained at his post guarding a building during the eruption of Vesuvius, his commitment to duty far stronger than the imminent death he could see approaching from afar. Such was the Roman civilization at its apogee. I imagine he was probably laughing, too. <em>Moritur et ridet</em>. How does this make you feel?</p><p>That soldier was clearly uninterested in frequent flyer miles or a complimentary vacation cruise for two. His total commitment seems incomprehensible and comical to a civilization built around an ersatz cult of conspicuous consumption. What was so important about that doorway in the context of an onrushing two-story high wall of hot lava? Surely, he could have saved himself and lived to serve another day. Salvation from the hot lava was just a brisk jog away. But no, he had to choose to stand there as if to spite us.</p><p>His choice wasn&apos;t about defending a meaningless doorway or adhering to an imaginary code where superiors&apos; orders overcome the fear of death. He simply obstinately refused to surrender his doorway to the wall of lava. Sorry, I won&apos;t do it. This is my doorway, there may be many like it, but this one is mine. A refusal to yield to entropy, the dying of the light, even in one&apos;s final moments. Does this make you feel uncomfortable?</p><p>To paraphrase Dylan Thomas, fundamentally, every civilization is a constant rage against the dying of the light. You cannot optimize a civilization for safety and comfortable consumption and expect it to survive. That way inevitably leads to deceleration, disintegration, and decomposition. This is not an ideological choice but a thermodynamic one. Entropy does not care about Favela Chic delusions.</p><p>When a civilization decides mere safe consumption is enough, it dies there and then. The rest is a prolonged ritual of <a target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow ugc" class="dont-break-out" href="https://turbulence.substack.com/p/notes-on-the-therapeutic-state">therapeutic survival</a>: &quot;The light inside has broken, but I still work&quot; taped across the face of a decaying infrastructure - a system stripped of purpose, devouring its own borrowed time.</p>]]></content:encoded>

            <content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>Not long ago, on April 12, it was Yuri&apos;s night, the anniversary of the first human in space. It passed without much fanfare, as it usually does, unnoticed by global media and most people. Of course, it would be. Ask around - Yuri&apos;s dive into the cosmos makes no sense whatsoever. Went first into space, so what? We have so many problems here on Earth!</p><p>There is no shared purpose connecting the culture of <em>the current thing</em> to the roots of the longing for space, the deep longing for the beyond stretching back to the first chariot riders to cross the steppe. Don&apos;t you know, history has ended; we&apos;re in the eternal present now. Both history and the future are <em>problematic</em> now.</p><p>There is no more meaning - understood as the ancient Greek <em>telos</em> - connecting the past, present, and future in an organic living experience that could make sense of this longing. For the culture of <em>the current thing</em>, Yuri Gagarin&apos;s journey beyond the heavens, into the dark of the cosmos, is just another white man&apos;s privilege. Oh wait, are Slavs white now? Instead, consider the following.</p><p>Aeschylus, the father of tragedy and the first titan of theatre, fought as a volunteer hoplite at Marathon and considered this the only achievement worth mentioning on his gravestone. For him, the glory of that one forced night march and magnificent morning charge of the phalanx on the beach at Marathon, the sun reflected in the wave of silver shields, overshadowed all of his art. Can you imagine that? Does this make sense to you?</p><p>But wait. Sophocles, the second in the trinity of theatre titans, served as a volunteer hoplite and rose to a general&apos;s rank alongside Pericles in the Athenian war against Samos. Meanwhile, Euripides, the third theatre titan, served as a volunteer hoplite in the Athenian army during the Peloponnesian War. Did they coordinate this, one wonders?</p><p>Meanwhile, the great Socrates served as a volunteer hoplite in the same war and distinguished himself at Potidaea, Delium, and Amphipolis. During the panicked Athenian rout at Delium, he stayed back to cover his unit&apos;s retreat and saved Alcibiades&apos; life. The magnificent Alcibiades, the likes of whom we haven&apos;t seen since the Renaissance, later became a student of Socrates.</p><p>The great Plato, another student of Socrates, was first famous as an all-Greek pankration champion. In modern terms, that makes him a mixed martial arts UFC champion, though it is a UFC without any rules, where competitors fight and often die in games celebrating the old gods. Moreover, we only know him by his nickname - <em>platos</em>, meaning &apos;broad&apos; - suggesting that he must have been a truly imposing presence. How does this make you feel?</p><p>Then there is Xenophon, another student of Socrates, who fought as a hoplite mercenary in the expedition of the Ten Thousand deep into Persia and Asia Minor, later describing his adventures in the legendary <em>Anabasis</em>. Enough.</p><p>All these men lived and fought in the same glorious century. Not coincidentally, theirs was the zeitgeist to invent the root <em>telos</em> (purpose) of Western civilization, its fundamental myth of the future. Aristoteles, a student of Plato, would later describe this myth as <em>eudaimonia</em>, or human flourishing. It was to last, with minor variations, until modernity.</p><p>The same spirit that drove Aeschylus to value risking his life at Marathon more than all his work drove Xenophon&apos;s hoplites to march into the unknown and stick together, despite all, until the sea. Thalassa! The unbounded sea was their cosmos. The same spirit that drove Plato to become a champion fighter drove him to study with the Pythagoreans in Italy, the priests in Egypt, and the magi in Persia. The drive of the spirit to flourish beyond all boundaries.</p><p>Before you say these were entertainments peculiar to the ancients, did you know that Cervantes - he of <em>Don Quixote</em> fame - was at Lepanto, the most important naval battle in history, as a volunteer in the tercios of Don Juan de Austria, on his flagship the <em>Real</em>. He was there at the thick of battle, in the most savage close-quarter butchery, when the janissaries of Ali Pasha broke through and boarded the <em>Real</em>. He was there when the tercios repelled the attack and, in turn, boarded Ali Pasha&apos;s flagship, the <em>Sultana</em>. Amid this madness, decks covered in blood, screams filling the air, acrid smoke filling the lungs, he got a musket shot to his chest, point blank, but somehow survived. After recovery, on his way back home, he was captured by the Barbary pirates and spent five years as a slave. This is where <em>Don Quixote</em> came from. How does this make you feel? Do you think he would have done it again?</p><p>Today, these are just forgotten stories. Like random sheets torn from a lost book, no greater meaning to connect them to. With the onset of the Industrial Revolution and the relentless onslaught of the machine age, in a final rebellion, the German Romantics added the Faustian Spirit as the last twist to that <em>telos</em>. When Goethe&apos;s Faust says, &quot;What you don&apos;t know is the only thing you need to know, and what you know is useless to you,&quot; he becomes the ultimate expression of the ancients&apos; <em>eudaimonia</em>, the flourishing that strives to know and overcome all, in all directions.</p><p>It was during the fin de siècle that our culture saw the last of this spirit embodied in great artists, thinkers, and writers, in the likes of Jack London, Hemingway, Junger, and Saint-Exupéry. Junger was the quintessential warrior through and through; London and Hemingway tried to be and do everything daring all at once, and Saint-Exupéry volunteered as a fighter pilot, writing on the side. Perhaps there were more.</p><p>The Faustian Spirit died stomped in the mud and blood of the two world wars, ushering in the End of History and The Last Man - Western civilization as we know it today. An ersatz civilization built around a cargo cult of the eternal present. A cult of comfort, consumption, and safety. A sunset administered by an outsourced answering machine.</p><p>Where are we today? To get a proper perspective, imagine if the likes of Derrida, Foucault, and Baudrillard were first famous as veterans of the French Foreign Legion, becoming celebrity philosophers only as a hobby in their later years.</p><p>Imagine Foucault returning from his military adventures in Indochina, having risen to a colonel rank, and writing <em>Discipline and Punish</em> while recovering from the wounds received covering his unit&apos;s retreat at Dien Bien Phu.</p><p>Imagine Derrida proclaiming the tenets of deconstructionism from the octagon, having won his third UFC championship belt. Perhaps he is a jiu-jitsu master, and that is where his first insight into deconstruction comes from.</p><p>Imagine Zizek first earning fame leading a team of catholic mercenaries in the Yugoslav wars, starting to dabble in Lacanian film analysis at night, in the lull of fighting orthodox chetniks.</p><p>Imagine Baudrillard starting his career as a fighter pilot, becoming the first Frenchman in space, nearly suffocating during re-entry, and, shaken by the experience, retiring to write <em>Simulacra and Simulations</em>.</p><p>Can you not imagine it? Why not? Can you not imagine any modern philosopher or artist as first a warrior or, to give modernity its due, at least a competitor in the Olympics? No? How about imagining them as amateur boxing champions, passionate sailors, obsessed Formula 1 drivers, or simple goat farmers? After his flight, Soviet authorities forbade him from diving into the cosmos ever again, worried about the risks of losing him. And the risks were enormous. Only five years after his flight, Komarov&apos;s parachutes did not open on re-entry, and his Soyuz capsule slammed into the ground at high speed, vaporizing him instantly. Yuri had that spirit though, that drive for the unbound Xenophon captured so well in the <em>Anabasis</em>, and died the way he would have wanted.</p><p>Can we recapture this <em>telos</em> and reforge it for the future, and what would that future e<em>udaimonia</em> look like? It must offer more than mere survival, go beyond existence for the sake of biomass propagation, and be more than the safe medicated consumption of corporate slop. It must be rooted in organic meaning, a continuation of the ancient <em>telos</em> that has brought us so far, a flourishing that takes us into the unbound sea beyond Earth.</p><p>Imagine if you could rock up at a spaceport and sign up for a ten-year stint on the asteroid belt. Maybe you&apos;ll come back, rich and tired, hands slightly shaking from drilling rocks in low G. Or maybe you won&apos;t come back at all - you&apos;ll buy an asteroid - millions of them around - hollow it out and become the ruler of a free port city for all those freighters on the way to Callisto.</p><p>Maybe you will figure out how to breed goats in space and settle them across the asteroid belt, the way the Spanish did with pigs in the Caribbean all those centuries ago. Only returning to Earth, a beautiful green Earth preserved as the Gaia planet, mother to us all, for a week on the beach or Christmas in the snow.</p><p>We can build network states in space. Free cities in the asteroid belt. A Neu-Hohenstaufen empire on the moons of Saturn. Ordo Militaris Stellarum. Martian Technocracy. A neo-Cossack Sich on Io. Sufi mystic colonies on Mercury. Neo-hippie communes on Ganymede. And more.</p><p>This is how the Faustian spirit survives. A future worth living for.</p>]]></content:encoded>

Any system can develop the perfect and highly optimized operation plan, with just-in-time this and agile that, but all beautiful flowcharts can, and usually do, crumble under the onslaught of reality. The drama of all systems, both simple and complex, is in the precarious balance between maintaining operational efficiency and adapting to unforeseen challenges that punch you in the face.</p><p>To begin with, surviving amidst flux over a long period demands constant transformation from all systems. However, a continuous and dynamic tension exists between a system&apos;s adaptability, efficiency, and overall stability. Even for simple systems, too much adaptability sacrifices efficiency, and too much efficiency sacrifices adaptability. For example, an organization could optimize its supply chain for maximum just-in-time efficiency and shareholder value, only to have it crumble under a sudden and unpredictable change in geopolitics halfway across the globe. Who knows, an obscure rebel group might start sinking container ships. True story. It gets worse, though; this tension is far more challenging for complex systems due to their being, well, the opposite of simple.</p><p>Complex systems are composed of multiple distinct elements - for example, consider a modern army with its infantry, artillery, mechanized units, drones, air force, and so on. The interactions between these disparate components lead to results we cannot predict by simply analyzing each system element&apos;s properties in isolation. For instance, examining a tank&apos;s capabilities in isolation offers no clear insight into its operational effectiveness when supported by infantry, artillery, drone reconnaissance, and aviation.</p><p>When combined, these additional components of the larger system radically alter the tank&apos;s capabilities and fundamentally change the nature of its engagement envelope and effectiveness on the battlefield. The introduction of aerial surveillance provides real-time data, artillery offers long-range support firepower, infantry occupies proximal space, and aviation brings a vertical dimension, together creating a system whose potential actions are vastly different and more complex than that of any single component.</p><p>In other words, each unique element allows a system to add complexity at that scale, interface with reality differently, and engage in unique and complex behaviors. The more complexity at different system scales, the more adaptable a system is in interfacing with reality at those scales. That said, if a system gets a punch to the face and is not adaptable to deal with its effects, it quickly experiences a cascading reduction of complexity and collapses.</p><p>All systems get punched in the face sooner or later. What happens with a system <em>after</em> the punch is where the fun begins; the system still has to maintain internal coherence and operational efficiency while simultaneously pivoting its operations to adapt to the novel external conditions. As Mike Tyson aptly pointed out, the old plan is invalid after the punch because reality has violently imposed itself on the system&apos;s assumptions.</p><p>Let&apos;s explore a principle of systemic efficiency and adaptability that accounts for the punches and what comes after them. I call it <em>Ariadne&apos;s string principle</em> after the ancient Greek myth of Theseus and the Minotaur.</p><p><strong>Ariadne’s gift</strong></p><p>The great Daedalus, legendary builder and craftsman of the ancient world, was tasked by King Minos of Crete to construct a labyrinth so complex that escape would be impossible. Once in, you were never supposed to be able to leave. On top of that, this labyrinth was to be built as a prison for the Minotaur, a creature with a man&apos;s body and a bull&apos;s head. Daedalus built the unique maze, the Minotaur was locked inside it, and the king put it to grim use, imposing a tribute on defeated Athens: the sacrifice of seven young men and seven young women every seven years to the Minotaur.</p><p>When the tribute was due again, Theseus, the prince of Athens, volunteered to be one of the seven young men destined for the labyrinth, pledging to slay the monster. However, our valiant hero was not alone. The daughter of King Minos - Ariadne - who, as it happens in myths, was in love with brave Theseus, approached Daedalus, pleading with the maze builder to help the hero escape. Moved, Daedalus asked Ariadne to give our hero a ball of string. Yes.</p><p>The myth does not mention Ariadne&apos;s initial reaction to that solution, but one can imagine it. In any case, Daedalus explained that this string was to be tied to the entrance of the labyrinth and unrolled as Theseus ventured deeper into it. As it turned out, this hack allowed our hero to navigate the maze, slay the Minotaur, and trace his steps back to freedom. Ariadne&apos;s string is the key to this myth, so let&apos;s unpack its role further.</p><p><strong>Between Adaptability and Efficiency</strong></p><p>On the face of it, the string is an absurd way of finding your way around in a labyrinth. Why not use a map? Or, absent a map, a series of &quot;take the first right, walk straight 20 paces and turn left&quot; instructions? All Theseus would have to do is trace his movements according to the plan and never stray from it. After all, Daedalus was the maze builder and presumably remembered its construction plan. One would expect a legendary techno-craftsman to produce some intricate contraption showing the way to Theseus. So, why the crude and simple string?</p><p>Simply put, because Theseus was about to be <em>punched in the face</em>.</p><p>Knowing that, Daedalus could not have given him a plan of the maze or a complicated contraption. What if Theseus loses the map, forgets the detailed instructions or the intricate contraption gets broken in his fight with the Minotaur? Ariadne&apos;s string exemplifies the optimal balance between maximum adaptability and simple efficiency for a given system&apos;s scale. The string doesn&apos;t show the way forward or the maze&apos;s layout. The string is dumb. Worse, it has nothing to do with the maze at all! It simply adapts to and interfaces with every twist and turn of the labyrinth while being highly efficient in showing Theseus only one simple thing - the path he took.</p><p>You see, <em>adaptability</em> is a function of a system&apos;s ability to perform many possible simple actions more or less independently of each other. Ariadne&apos;s string is an adaptability hack for the complexity of the labyrinth - it could interface with all possible permutations of that space. Multiple possible actions at the smallest of scales.</p><p><em>Efficiency</em>, however, is a function of the ability of various system parts to work together to perform tasks at the largest possible scale. Ariadne&apos;s string was expected to perform only one task at the scale of Theseus traversing an impossible maze, fighting a monster inside it, and getting out. The simplest of tasks at the largest of scales.</p><p>Designing a system for efficiency and adaptability is far trickier than it appears at first. Imagine a city&apos;s transportation system designed for maximum efficiency: a network of trains and buses running on a tight schedule, minimal wait times, and optimized passenger carrying capacity. As is usually the case, such a system would be given as an example of optimal efficiency due to its just-in-time predictability and low operational costs. However, the system&apos;s rigidity becomes apparent when a sudden, unexpected week of heavy downpours disrupts its operations.</p><p>While optimal under normal conditions, its efficiency doesn&apos;t allow for quick adaptation to the new challenges posed by the heavy downpours. The transportation system, optimized for specific operational conditions, struggles to provide alternative routes or modes of transport that accommodate the change, leading to delays, congestion, and chaos. In other words, the system is optimized for a well-defined operational envelope, but that very optimization deprives it of the resources to quickly adapt to a dramatic change in the envelope.</p><p>Notice that if the system had a spare fleet of otherwise redundant minibuses, it could adjust to the sudden change in conditions much better. However, that same redundant fleet of minibuses - representing adaptability - will present extra costs and additional and unnecessary complexity in all ordinary conditions. There is a lesson here.</p><p>Alternatively, consider a modern tank battalion advancing in enemy territory with infantry support, acting according to doctrine as an efficient complex system. With more than a century of deployment history, tanks are shockingly efficient in interfacing with most questions the typical enemy can ask of them. Their interactions are usually short and have great finality in execution.</p><p>However, this particular enemy has deployed a swarm of dirt-cheap first-person view (FPV) drones, each armed with an armor-piercing warhead. As the swarm maneuvers at speeds exceeding 100 kilometers per hour, slamming into and destroying tank after tank, the advancing complex system has no way of interfacing with the drones. A punch to the face and a knockout. True story. What is the lesson here?</p><p><em>A system&apos;s effectiveness is contingent on its ability to provide a distinct response to each environmental possibility it may encounter.</em></p><p>If a system cannot interface with the changing conditions in its environment, it will fail to be effective and, absent a transformation, will ultimately collapse. However, we have to remember that as long as the system keeps operating under the conditions for which it is optimized, it will be within its maximum effectiveness envelope. This is why so many highly fragile systems seem to operate just fine when viewed from the outside. This is also why the easiest way to derail a highly efficient system is to change the scale of its operational envelope. Even a slight shift in external conditions would often completely derail a highly optimized and efficient system.</p><p>The problem is that <em>highly efficient systems lack the flexibility to adapt</em> to new challenges. Like the transportation system discussed above, to become highly efficient, they need to remove all unnecessary complexity and redundancies, streamlining processes for optimal performance conditions. The very optimization that makes a system highly efficient prevents it from quickly adapting to change. Any highly efficient system is also highly fragile.</p><p>That is because, as I already mentioned, adaptability is a function of a system&apos;s ability to perform multiple distinct actions at small scales. In other words, adaptability emerges when a system can interface with reality in multiple, often rare, non-optimal conditions. That fleet of minibuses is a small-scale redundancy, increasing the complexity and costs of the transportation system but allowing the system to adapt to the rare occurrence of a week-long downpour or other sudden disruptions. Similarly, installing radio frequency jammers on each armored vehicle is a small-scale redundancy, increasing the complexity and cost of a tank battalion but allowing the system to at least partially adapt to the sudden occurrence of an FPV drone swarm attack.</p><p>Highly adaptable systems, on the other hand, can interface with multiple environmental challenges but struggle with scaling up. As they grow, the costs of maintaining their complex adaptability increase to a threshold beyond which they cannot perform their actions efficiently at a given scale. In other words, past that scale threshold, the highly adaptable system has no other option but to optimize its processes for efficiency. Either that or the rising complexity costs at larger scales bring the whole system down.</p><p>Therefore, to be highly adaptable, a system has to either stay below a specific scale of operations or keep its adaptable elements small while growing in scale with a much more efficient structure and output. We will explore this dynamic further.</p><p><strong>The time and scale trade-offs</strong></p><p>If you think through this dynamic, you will notice that adaptability adds costly complexity here and now but <em>may save a system in the future</em>, while efficiency lowers costly complexity today but <em>will doom a system in the future.</em> This is why most systems will naturally drift towards increased efficiency at the cost of lowered adaptability. Optimizing for efficiency saves system resources here and now while optimizing for adaptability does not generate immediate effects for most systems.</p><p>That fleet of minibuses represents ongoing costs the transportation system <em>must pay</em> <em>in the present</em>, while the adaptability it provides <em>may save the system in the future</em>. Conversely, the efficiency of a transportation system streamlined for optimal conditions lowers its operational costs in the present but invariably renders the system more fragile to potential future shocks.</p><p>There is a time trade-off where the investment in adaptability - though burdensome with its added complexity and immediate costs - acts as insurance against future uncertainties. On the other hand, focusing on efficiency streamlines operations and reduces overhead in the short term while rendering the system brittle and unable to cope with unforeseen changes.</p><p>Again, adaptability increases your system&apos;s costs in the present - think time, money, energy, and cognitive load - at all scales where it appears but allows your system to evolve at those scales. Efficiency saves you costs in the present - think time, money, energy, and cognitive load - but increases your system&apos;s fragility at all scales.</p><p>In essence, adaptability buys <em>resilience at the expense of current simplicity</em>, while efficiency buys simplicity in the present <em>at the cost of future vulnerability</em>.</p><p>This is the efficiency versus adaptability trade-off represented along a time axis. However, the choice between adaptability and efficiency is also a problem of scale. There is an inherent trade-off between the number of ways a system can interface with reality and <em>the scale at which it can coordinate these engagements</em>.</p><p><em>The more complex a system&apos;s actions, the higher the cost of performing them at a larger scale.</em></p><p>For example, consider the cost of deploying a hundred drone countermeasures locally in one sector of the front as opposed to hundreds of thousands across the structure of an entire army. <em>The simpler the actions, the easier they are to perform at a large scale.</em></p><p>In other words, as I mentioned above, there is a scale threshold beyond which a system will be unable to perform complex actions without sacrificing the efficiency of its operations. While efficiency is about optimizing for a task at the maximum system scale, adaptability is about redundancies for rare tasks at multiple small scales.</p><p>The fundamental scale trade-off means that a complex system optimized for adaptability will have greater complexity at smaller scales, while a complex system optimized for efficiency will have lower complexity but operate at much larger scales.</p><p>We are witnessing these trade-offs today as FPV drone swarms obliterate thousands of tanks and armored vehicles on the fronts of Ukraine. FPV drones have been a known technology for more than twenty years and have been used in warfare for at least a decade, yet no modern military has fully adapted to them. So far, neither the theory of mechanized warfare nor command structures or individual tank designs can effectively interface with the complex questions asked by FPV drone swarms.</p><p>Modern militaries are systems optimized for efficiency in the present at vast scales - maneuver warfare, capturing territory, and access denial. Meanwhile, drone swarms pose a question of complexity at multiple small scales - exactly where modern militaries are highly efficient and cannot adapt quickly.</p><p>Again, as a system&apos;s actions become more complex in adapting to potential environmental changes, its capacity to coordinate them effectively <em>and scale up</em> diminishes. A company might be very efficient in producing a limited number of complex widgets, but scaling up production would increase costs beyond the threshold at which it can make them efficiently. This trade-off presents a critical challenge for any system navigating between complex objectives and maintaining the ability to operate at a larger scale.</p><p>For example, consider the operational differences between special forces and conventional army units. Special forces perform highly complex tasks, such as covert surveillance, infiltration, sabotage, and engaging valuable enemy targets. These tasks involve constantly evolving and sophisticated technologies, highly specialized skills, precision, and adaptability. The complexity of special forces acts as a hard-coded limit on their size and scale of operations in maintaining coordination and effectiveness.</p><p>Conversely, conventional armies are designed and trained to engage in large-scale operations such as capturing territory and access denial. Startups thrive on rapid innovation, fast feedback loops, iteration, and agility, focusing on developing new products or services. They are systems optimized for maximum adaptability at multiple small scales. Each of their elements is usually highly complex and adaptable to dynamically shifting operational envelopes.</p><p>For example, think of the ambiguity of startup position descriptions. Founders and their first employees must work across the entire operational envelope of the system - from sales to coding and management. Talk about extreme complexity at small scales. Their focus on adaptability and innovation requires flexibility and rapid decision-making that cannot be maintained as the organization grows.</p><p>As startups scale up into larger enterprises, the complexity of their operations invariably must decrease to standardize processes and achieve economies of scale. Startups buy the ability to operate at larger scales by reducing their complexity at those scales. Over time, the efficiency drift I mentioned above becomes inevitable for most former startups. They optimize for efficiency to unlock economies of scale while simultaneously curtailing adaptability.</p><p>This is why, while multinational corporations are present at global scales, they seriously struggle to innovate at the same speed and creativity as startups. It is much cheaper for a large corporation to buy startups than to maintain costly adaptability. The time and scale trade-offs to coordinating complex actions are unavoidable.</p><p><strong>Ariadne&apos;s string principle</strong></p><p>Now, let&apos;s return to Daedalus&apos; gift to Ariadne. The string has the optimal complexity required to interface with the labyrinth and the optimal efficiency to allow Theseus to retrace his steps. Daedalus&apos; genius lies in matching the complexity of the maze - that is, the questions it might ask of Theseus - and reframing the task of finding a way out as a simple problem of retracing steps. He addresses the time and scale trade-offs between adaptability and efficiency by focusing on performing the simplest and most efficient action in the present while matching the complexity scale of the maze. This is what Ariadne&apos;s string principle is all about.</p><p><em>For maximum efficiency in its environment, a system must simplify its present actions while aligning with or exceeding its environment&apos;s complexity at the corresponding scales.</em></p><p>Put differently, Ariadne&apos;s string principle requires a system to perform two, at first sight, divergent maneuvers dynamically.</p><p><em>A system must streamline operations in the present while ensuring they match or exceed the complexity of the realities they may interface with.</em></p><p>Moreover, what represents optimal efficiency at a given scale of external complexity today will probably not work well tomorrow. Adaptability is future-oriented, and the principle demands that potential future operational envelopes be accounted for in efficiency calculations at all scales. After all, Ariadne&apos;s gift to Theseus wouldn&apos;t be any good for him if it didn&apos;t account for a potential punch to the face.</p><p>Ariadne&apos;s string principle dictates that a complex system must incorporate evolutionary adaptation across its elements by allowing continuous parallel small-scale experimentation at all scales where it interfaces with external conditions. In practice, this means that a complex system such as a corporation must allow its units interfacing with external conditions to undergo continuous evolutionary adaptations at their corresponding scales. Crucially, for this experimentation to benefit the whole system, <em>successful adaptations achieved by these units must be communicated and replicated across the system</em>.</p><p><strong>Stability</strong></p><p>However, there is a catch. Within simpler systems, with more or less streamlined operations, successful adaptations in one element can be replicated across the system without much instability. Think startups pivoting to a new direction. Their small size, the flat, networked structure of their organization, and the complexity of their units allow them to adjust to evolutionary adaptations quickly.</p><p>Not so with complex systems, which are usually structured hierarchically with a distinct center of control and coordination and elements optimized for efficiency. Hierarchies are very poor at dynamically augmenting their structure and operations in response to a change in external conditions. This is why evolutionary adaptability and experimentation at smaller scales <em>increase instability within complex systems over time</em>.</p><p>External conditions invariably change dynamically (think FPV drones), and to match the changing complexity of their operational envelope at various scales, a complex system&apos;s internal structure <em>has to evolve at a similar or faster speed</em>. What good is an otherwise effective tank brigade if it cannot evolve and adapt at the same speed and complexity as the FPV drones attacking it? Remember - Ariadne&apos;s string principle requires the system to match or exceed the complexity of its environment at the scales it interfaces with it. The problem lies in the adaptation sync.</p><p><em>Complex systems usually struggle to sync the adaptation pace of their constituent elements, causing instability over time.</em></p><p>This is why successful complex systems must ensure all their elements continuously engage with and adapt to external conditions at various scales while communicating and replicating successful adaptation strategies. The faster successful evolutionary adaptations can be transmitted and replicated across a complex system, the better it adapts to changing conditions and the more stable it is. This is why high command, senior management, and C-suite executives should always be fully involved at the same scales as their frontline units. Their participation only speeds up the percolation of successful adaptations across the complex system.</p><p>Consider this dynamic in practice. After more than two years of incessant FPV drone warfare, most frontline units on either side of the war in Ukraine have fully or partially adapted to the immediate danger of FPV drone attacks. These are usually small-scale, locally improvised adaptations of varying complexity - from shields welded to the tank to amateur radio jammers. However, these successful local adaptations have not been replicated by all elements of the complex systems of the opposing armies.</p><p>For such an adaptation to occur, the internal structures of both armies would have to evolve at the same pace and align with the complexity scales of conditions on the front. Senior commanders would have to reframe operational plans around the danger of FPV drones, and the successful adaptations of frontline units - from evolving structure to new technologies and tactics - would have to be replicated across all elements of each army. This poses a profound structural challenge to the current stability of these systems.</p><p>In fact, a certain kind of complex system, whether an army, a corporation, a university, or an authoritarian state, might prioritize an arbitrary internal stability state optimized for a given macro efficiency scale over adaptability at multiple smaller scales. In practice, these types of systems would consciously opt to avoid evolutionary adaptations at multiple small scales, choosing to maintain the arbitrary stability of their current structures and operational modes at a given macro scale. At what cost, you might ask? What a good question!</p><p>In a vacuum, such systems would quickly collapse from the internal build-up of entropy caused by the exponentially rising costs of non-adaptation to external conditions. In reality, such systems pay the rising costs of arbitrary stability by increasing resource consumption. As simple as that.</p><p>An army would throw more people into the grinder - the war in Ukraine is a grotesque illustration of that. An authoritarian state would expropriate as much as it can from its subjects. Many such cases! A corporation would eat up all investor cash and bank debt it can access while appearing as stable as a rock from the outside. The market favorite!</p><p>As long as a complex system can access additional energy sources, it can afford to opt for an arbitrary present stability state of optimized efficiency. This allows the system to optimize its operations for efficiency at a given macro scale while paying the costs of mal-adaptation at smaller scales. In other words, access to unlimited resources allows the system to ignore the future (adaptability), focusing on an arbitrary present it has optimized for (efficiency).</p><p>However, when additional energy sources dry up, such a system has to abandon stability and start its adventures searching for Ariadne&apos;s string. Imagine a teenager&apos;s bedroom as a system isolated from the outside world and no longer receiving external input (like parental cleaning services). Over time, clothes accumulate on the floor, empty snack wrappers create a new carpet layer, and mysterious new life forms evolve in the pile of discarded pizza boxes in the corner.</p><p>This isolated ecosystem rapidly accelerates towards chaos - an increase in entropy. The room becomes a miniature universe obeying the second law of thermodynamics: in an isolated system, entropy tends to increase, leading to disorder. It is better to remain at least somewhat open to the outside world and have at it before the inevitable. But that&apos;s another story.</p><p>This story is about those systems opting to remain at least somewhat open in the competition for scarce resources. In this high-stakes game, direct confrontation is only sometimes the wisest path to victory. There are better, more refined ways of defeating an opposing system.</p><p>In this piece, I propose that the most subversive yet elegant method to triumph over a competing system is to make it <em>detour</em> <em>itself</em> into a state of inertia. Moreover, this self-detour can be induced as if casting a spell.</p><p>I call it the <em>naked king spell</em>.</p><p>Before going further, let&apos;s quickly outline what inertia is and why it is bad for you. In brief, inertia is a system&apos;s stubborn repetition of a routine until failure. A system is in a state of inertia when it continuously performs a set of operations regardless of external conditions. Consider a restaurant that clings to the menu that initially made it successful. Why, the restaurant owner may believe the menu exemplifies the ideal Platonic food form, worth three Michelin stars. It doesn&apos;t matter.</p><p>Clinging to a set of actions regardless of circumstances is how inertia sets in. The state of inertia usually continues until a non-negotiable change in external conditions forces a system breakdown. Change, by its very nature, has infinite forms. Tastes evolve, and the once-popular Michelin menu is now passe; the restaurant faces a crisis.</p><p>Why a crisis, though? Can&apos;t they adapt? After all, it would only take a change in the menu to adjust to external changes in taste. Here lies the beauty of the spell - self-adaptation doesn&apos;t even come into play. The restaurant cannot adapt and <em>must</em> <em>f</em>ace a crisis because it cannot simply change its menu - inertia, remember? Once set in inertia, it is tremendously difficult for a system to alter its path on its own. Inducing this process is like casting a spell, convincing a system to bind itself to a set of <em>its own</em> routines.</p><p>The elegance of the <em>naked king spell</em> is that in casting it, you&apos;re exploiting a system&apos;s internal structure and operations, effectively trapping it in its internal procedures. Let&apos;s explore how the spell works, the effects of inertia, and, in the process, figure out how to defend against it.</p><p><strong>The naked king</strong></p><p>To understand the inertia spell, you must know Hans Christian Andersen&apos;s famous story, usually translated in English as <em>The Emperor&apos;s New Clothes.</em> Here&apos;s the short version.</p><p>An emperor, or king, was fond of new clothes and always searching for new fashions to surprise his subjects. The king, you see, liked shocking the bourgeoisie before it was popular. It was his thing. Some kings are fond of new wars, others of old mistresses, but our king had a penchant for deconstructing bespoke Savile Row shirts and Herringbone jackets.</p><p>One day, the king was approached by a pair of clever swindlers who told him they could weave completely new fabrics, so fine and delicate that only those of sophisticated tastes and deep wisdom could see them. The art of deconstructed fashion brought to its logical conclusion, as it were.</p><p>The clothes made of this fabric would be invisible to everyone else, who, presumably, lacked the required learning and sophistication. The final solution to prole aesthetics! The king paid the two con men the large sum of money they demanded, and in return, they pretended to weave the fine clothes they promised. But, of course, they just wove thin air.</p><p>After a few days, the king and all his ministers inspected the magnificent new clothes. Of course, such sophisticated literati as them had long ago learned the fine art of pretending to see that which is not there, and so they all admired the magnificent new clothes. After all, only a lowly prole would fail to see their splendorous refinement.</p><p>In a stroke of genius, the king even organized a procession through his capital&apos;s streets to show his subjects the fine new clothes he wore. As an artist, he was also fond of raising social awareness through art for the masses. The people lined the streets to see the spectacle, and all exclaimed how unique and beautiful the king&apos;s new clothes were. None wanted to appear uncouth or stupid, or worse, be accused of hate speech towards the alternatively clothed. They were wise to the ways of modern political science, you see.</p><p>Only a little boy exclaimed loudly, &quot;But the king is naked!&quot;</p><p>The way Andersen tells the story, the boy&apos;s innocent observation of reality breaks the spell, and everyone starts laughing at the king and his imaginary clothes. Speaking truth to power works!</p><p>Of course, you know better than this, dear reader. So, let&apos;s dive in and discover the workings of <em>the naked king spell</em> and what it brings.</p><p><strong>The spell</strong> </p><p>On the surface, the scenario boils down to the dangers of denying the obvious. The king and his court made fools of themselves - mainstream media&apos;s favorite topic. The story cautions us against trusting those who promise the impossible and points to the value of good old common sense.</p><p>On a deeper level, the story illustrates a breakdown of the feedback loops within a system. In a healthy system, an initial observation of external conditions is followed by decisions, actions, and consequences, which feed into new observations, decisions, and actions in a continuous loop. Not so in our scenario.</p><p>In the real-world enactment of the story, the boy would shout, &quot;The king is naked,&quot; but instead of the people opening their eyes to the obvious, the boy and his parents are usually whisked away by a three-letter agency, never to be heard from again. Who knows, maybe they are accused of hate speech? The king identifies as clothed! Perhaps they are branded as lunatics, conspiracy theorists, enemies of the state, foreign agents, science deniers, or all of the above.</p><p>The boy&apos;s reaction represents the long-delayed feedback loop between the king&apos;s court and reality. In a healthy system, that feedback loop works continuously across all areas where the system interfaces with the external world. In other words, if the kingdom were a healthy system, the king&apos;s adventures in the realm of new clothes would immediately end with a courtier pointing out the obvious. If that fails, the courtiers would simply install a new king. Many such cases!</p><p>What matters is that a system set in inertia cannot afford to entertain signals challenging its direction. Any such signal amplified enough would break the closed circuit of inertia. In an inertia-bound system, the boy&apos;s &apos;the king is naked&apos; feedback signal endangers internal procedures and must be silenced.</p><p>That feedback loop is the key element we must isolate to understand the spell. In our example, the king is a system&apos;s linchpin. He and his ministers form the center of power, that is to say, the center of coordination and control in the network we call the state.</p><p>The spell is cast when the con men convince the king that only educated and sophisticated people would see his fine new clothes. People who see him as naked are framed as uncouth simpletons. Crucially, everyone can see that the king is naked, including himself, but all persist in the charade. It doesn&apos;t matter whether they know the actual state of the king&apos;s body and the kingdom as a system. What matters is that they <em>project an alternate reality about that state</em>.</p><p>Those closest to the king, and therefore with the most power and the most to lose, may even convince themselves that the king is indeed wearing the fine clothes promised by the swindlers. Comprehensively deluded citizens might do the same. It doesn&apos;t matter. What matters is that the power center in this system is projecting an alternate reality <em>to itself</em>, in complete contrast with the actual state of the system.</p><p>The essence of the naked king spell is this subtle shift from a reality image generated by active feedback loops to an image based on the self-projection of a <em>synthetic reality</em>. Once the shift is complete, the system does the rest of the onerous work of marching toward collapse on its own. The synthetic reality projected by the system&apos;s command center overrides every aspect of the system.</p><p>After all, the purpose of a system is <em>what it does</em>.</p><p>A system under the naked king spell starts acting according to the synthetic reality it projects to itself instead of the external conditions it interfaces with. Again, casting the spell involves convincing a system&apos;s power center to supplant its healthy reality image with a synthetic one. There are various ways to achieve this, but ideally, the synthetic image must involve valorizing a <em>procedure or protocol internal to the system</em>.</p><p>That is because a system is highly likely to identify with its internal protocols. The corporate culture-building gospels contain endless variations of the &quot;we do things this way, and this is who we are&quot; mantra. Tying the synthetic reality image generated by the spell caster to an existing protocol in the target system will map the synthetic reality to the system&apos;s self-identity. If done well, the target system sees the synthetic reality as a core element of its identity and is highly likely to defend it.</p><p>In our story, the con men use the king&apos;s love for new clothes as the internal system protocol to exploit. The exploit works by valorizing the synthetic reality of non-existent &apos;new clothes&apos; as the epitome of the existing protocol of refined clothing, itself a core element of the system&apos;s identity. The system&apos;s power center now maps the synthetic reality to its core identity of fashionable refinement. The spell was successful.</p><p>In the restaurant example, an attacker could use the restaurant&apos;s obsession with its Michelin rating as the exploit vector and bind the spell to the menu or food presentation. Again, the attacker aims to spellbind the target system into creating a synthetic image of reality and attach it to its existing protocols. This tricks the target system into mapping the synthetic reality onto how it perceives itself. After all, a system&apos;s purpose is what it does.</p><p>Crucially, exploiting an internal protocol when casting the spell also ensures that the system&apos;s defense mechanism, whether three-letter agencies or HR departments, will actively defend the spell and its synthetic reality. Anyone within the system pointing out that the king is naked will be identified by its defense mechanism as a threat to the system&apos;s operations and suppressed. This is how the feedback loop with reality breaks down and detouring into inertia begins.</p><p>What does this breakdown process look like? First, the parts of the system still performing a feedback loop with external conditions start signaling the growing disconnect between external reality and the synthetic one generated by the spell. For example, in a war scenario, low-level officers inform their commanders that the current tactics do not work and casualties are rising catastrophically. Alternatively, in an academic scenario, teaching staff advise their faculty deans of persistent student dissatisfaction with the curriculum.</p><p>We already know that a healthy system interprets these signals as important feedback and closes the loop by adjusting its actions accordingly. However, a system under the naked king spell views these signals as dangerous challenges to internal operations and aims to stamp them out. Usually, such a system ignores feedback loops entirely. If that is not possible, it will use various methods to silence them – from denial to force. For example, the commanding officer tells the lower ranks he will not tolerate any questioning of his orders, or the teaching staff is forced to resign for pushback against institutional culture.</p><p>Generally, inertia-bound systems would react in one of the following ways to &apos;the king is naked&apos; corrective feedback loops:</p><ol><li><p>Ignore them entirely. This is the default reaction.</p></li><li><p>Counter-messaging and denial: The king is not naked! Saying otherwise is bigoted hate speech. The boy is lying, uninformed, deluded, a foreign agent, or a denier of the science of fine cloth making.</p></li><li><p>Derailment and diffusion: The king has always been naked, and here&apos;s why that&apos;s good for you!</p></li><li><p>Well poisoning: The king is indeed naked, but that is because he is secretly a reptilian! The threat is then followed by direct silencing.</p></li></ol><p>In complex systems under the naked king spell, options one to four are usually in play, with force reserved for situations where the other tactics fail. For example, a government would engage in extensive denial, derailment, and well poisoning before it escalates to direct force against internal opposition. For example, a corporation&apos;s HR department would fire anyone repeatedly questioning the synthetic reality projected by the spell.</p><p>Eventually, a system under the naked king spell reaches a stage where two destructive forces start working on it simultaneously. First, such systems are subject to high entropy due to operating in a synthetic reality. Disorder builds up internally, simply by nature of the discrepancy between external reality and the synthetic image of reality under which the system operates. In effect, such systems have effectively isolated themselves from the world and experience all the wonders of the second law of thermodynamics I mentioned.</p><p>Systems experiencing this effect of the spell try to mitigate the build-up of entropy by artificially increasing internal order through bureaucratic procedures. They would multiply administrative steps, invent new busy work, and create more procedural oversight positions while escalating penalties for non-compliance. The problem is that additional procedures only create the illusion of order while actually increasing the internal costs of operating the system, eventually triggering the <a target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow ugc" class="dont-break-out" href="https://turbulence.substack.com/p/the-red-queen-trap">Red Queen Trap</a>.</p><p>The second destructive force is generated by the elements of the system itself. Think of a system as a network continuously performed in existence by a set number of nodes, which are the network&apos;s actors. To simplify, think of the king, his court, and his subjects as the actors of such a network. As the system limps along the path of inertia, those of its actors interfacing with external reality find themselves under a constant cognitive strain generated by the discrepancy between the synthetic reality and actual external conditions.</p><p>The command center of a system is usually shielded from reality by one or multiple layers of intermediary actors reporting some approximate version of that reality to the center. These frontline actors suffer the most from the effects of the cognitive strain, as they can observe in real-time the widening gap between the synthetic image of reality maintained by the system and the actual external conditions.</p><p>Think of this cognitive load as an additional energy cost for the system, as the frontline actors must omit the discrepancy from their reporting. Why? If they don&apos;t, they immediately trigger the &apos;king is naked&apos; chain and its consequences. Those who persist in trying to report the discrepancy are removed from the system by its defense mechanisms.</p><p>Eventually, first some and then most of these frontline actors stop believing entirely in the synthetic reality generated by the system. &quot;If they lie about the king wearing clothes, they probably lie about everything else too.&quot; Such actors become extremely dangerous to the system&apos;s internal cohesion at that point, as their dissociation adds, you guessed it, additional energy costs to the system. In effect, the whole network starts disintegrating from within along its internal connections in a self-reinforcing positive feedback loop.</p><p>In that sense, the naked king spell is a <em>feedback dissociation exploit</em> leading to inertia.</p><p>Let&apos;s reassess. The naked king spell exploits a system&apos;s internal protocols to dissociate it from its feedback loops with external reality. Casting the spell involves binding a synthetic reality to a system&apos;s internal protocols, thereby making the artificial reality part of a system&apos;s identity. The art of casting the spell is in correctly selecting and valorizing a procedure or protocol internal to the target system. When done correctly, the spell convinces the target system that the synthetic reality is a critical element of the system&apos;s identity.</p><p>A system under the naked king spell will use its defense mechanisms to target and eliminate network nodes questioning the synthetic reality. In doing that, the system maintains the spell&apos;s effects using its own energy resources, further weakening itself in the process. In fact, the naked king spell generates increasingly destructive forces within the system, mirrored by equally rising energy costs as the system tries to resist the rising disorder.</p><p>Again, the synthetic image generated by the spell forces the system to operate in effective isolation from external conditions, leading to rising internal entropy. To stem the rising entropy, the system adds additional internal procedures and reporting steps, further increasing its energy costs.</p><p>Meanwhile, frontline actors in the network experience rising cognitive strain as they are caught in the middle between the system&apos;s synthetic reality and external conditions. Eventually, such actors experience complete dissociation from the system&apos;s artificial reality and start disintegrating the network from within in a positive feedback loop.</p><p>The naked king spell causes an inertia-bound death spiral in the target system. The spell&apos;s subtle subversive beauty is that the target system performs the entire death spiral using its internal energy and resources. This is the art of inertia casting.</p><p><strong>Inertia as a curse, inertia as an art</strong></p><p>The signs </p><p>An inertia-bound system is permeated by the ethos of doing things by the book. It is dogmatic, intolerant of all positive feedback loops even when obviously beneficial, and automatically considers innovation as deviation. Inertia-bound systems develop complex internal protocols describing the procedural steps for digesting external conditions in accordance with the synthetic reality image.</p><p>These protocols are seen as optimizing the routine functioning of the system and come with an internal bureaucracy enforcing them, further increasing energy costs. They also generate a growing pool of sycophants convinced following the protocols - parasitizing on the system&apos;s energy - is good for them. Following these new rules has helped my career! That is why systems under the naked king spell multiply committees, review panels, and working groups. They also usually have hypertrophied human resource departments to enforce the performance of this synthetic reality.</p><p>Furthermore, inertia-bound systems are usually optimized for synthetic external conditions at a point of time x, with beautiful protocols describing all possible procedures for that scenario. The problem is that external reality is in flux, and the point of time is now invariably x+n. Whenever external conditions consistently change, they pose new problems for an inertia-bound system.</p><p>Given a change in its environment, a system has to either expand energy towards altering its internal protocols and evolving or try to brute force the new problems with its existing protocols. An inertia-bound system invariably chooses to brute force new problems instead of adapting and changing because of the cost of altering its synthetic reality image.</p><p>Consequently, such a system traps itself in a spiral of increasing <em>conversion inefficiencies</em>. In other words, the system requires more and more energy to perform its existing set of tasks as the discrepancy between the outside and the internal synthetic reality continuously widens.</p><p>An inertia-bound system has clear-cut deterministic responses to environmental unpredictability, choosing to bottle up or disregard unfamiliar influences. Unpredictable scenarios threaten the synthetic reality image and must be avoided at all costs. This fear of uncontrollable scenarios with no playbook to follow cancels potential evolutionary paths and further buries the system in the swamp of inertia.</p><p>In other words, we know all these new and strange things are happening outside, but we will ignore them and talk about these other familiar things because they don&apos;t threaten our synthetic model of reality. Ironically, this dynamic makes an inertia-bound system appear very resilient and robust. Nothing will make us change our values!</p><p>Of course, this outward robustness is the side effect of the recursive protocols maintaining the synthetic reality image. The seemingly bulletproof nature of the system is a mark of its fragility. Its adherence to set patterns only piles up an inertia-resultant backlog of problems, inhibiting any potential resolution or innovation. Inertia, dressed up as stability, is the force driving the collapse and disintegration of the system.</p><p><em>The art</em></p><p>As I mentioned in the beginning, I consider the naked king spell the most elegant way of defeating an opposing system. You, dear reader, should have a relatively clear idea as to why by now. That being said, paradoxically, most systems would gladly settle into inertia - if only reality would let them. After all, it is so much easier to do the same thing repeatedly or not do anything at all. It is much cheaper, too, until entropy shows its face.</p><p>For such systems, the naked king spell is pure seduction. Finally, we have implemented robust procedures and eliminated the reckless innovators who threatened our safe space! However, there are a number of other reasons why the art of inertia casting is elegant and subversive.</p><p><strong>Efficiency</strong>: this is the most economical and efficient system attack mode, as an inertia-bound system spends energy on defeating itself. As described above, casting the spell renders the target system&apos;s energy into a weapon against itself, paradoxically aiding in its own collapse. Moreover, the system&apos;s defenses actively suppress its remaining healthy elements from lifting the spell. Opting for a subtle exploit rather than overt confrontation also reduces the potential for conflict and resistance.</p><p><strong>Predictability</strong>: the spell is highly predictable, as the actions of an inertia-bound system can be mapped with a high degree of accuracy the longer it stays in inertia. All one needs is knowledge of the protocols valorized in creating the synthetic reality image, and the target system usually doesn&apos;t hide them - they are now part of its identity. Moreover, inertia is seductive. Most systems usually <em>want</em> to be in a state of inertia - it feels safer, cheaper, more robust, and more stable. This universality also gives the spell caster many options for managing the aftermath of the target system&apos;s unraveling - from preserving the system&apos;s resources to their redeployment.</p><p><strong>Smooth reboot</strong>: the spell allows for smooth transitions from collapse to restoration of the inertia-bound system, thanks to its intact structures. If the spell caster chooses to reboot the system in a new configuration, the transition occurs without needing a complete rebuild. This quality of the spell also gives the system a semblance of continuity, ensuring that its revival is as efficient as its suspension was deliberate. The king is dead; long live the king!</p><p>There is a related point worth explaining further. If left on its own, an inertia-bound system will eventually grind to a halt and collapse under the dual forces of growing internal entropy and rising energy costs. This collapse might have a broad spectrum of forms, but the underlying support structure of the system will usually remain intact. For example, our Michelin restaurant closed down, but the restaurant&apos;s premises, kitchen equipment, etc., are still intact and available for reuse.</p><p>As another example, a country set in inertia might run itself into the ground, but valuable infrastructure such as ports, powerplants, and factories would likely remain intact and available to the spell caster. There are many examples of this dynamic unfolding in recent history once you start looking for them. This preservation is crucial to the smooth reboot process. When a system collapses under inertia, its support architecture remains dormant yet ready for revival.</p><p>In other words, if the spell caster decides to reboot, the system doesn&apos;t have to be reconstructed from the ground up. Instead, the existing structures can be revived and, if necessary, reconfigured to meet new objectives or adapt to new circumstances. For example, the new owner of our formerly Michelin restaurant retains the name and appearance but has altered the menu. Alternatively, the new corporate management of a tech company changes the company name, fires 85% of staff while retaining the infrastructure, and steers the company in an alternative direction. True story.</p><p>Alright, you say, but how can a system defend against the naked king spell? Before we examine defenses against the spell, I have to repeat that <em>inertia is seductive</em>. Left on their own, absent a malicious spell caster, systems are likely to <em>detour themselves</em> into inertia eventually. It is the easy path. It is consistently tempting for a system to multiply its internal procedures, increase the actors in its network, and reify its internal protocols into dogma. After all, it feels good to grow, be more orderly, and have a coherent culture that resists change. Conversely, it takes tremendous discipline and ideological drive for a system&apos;s command center to resist these temptations consistently.</p><p><strong>Defending against the naked king spell</strong></p><p>There are three defense modes against the spell - structural, cultural, and aesthetic. Each mode consists of a set of strategies protecting the system from the naked king spell and the seductive pull of inertia. They work best when deployed simultaneously in a layered active defense strategic posture.</p><p><em>Structural defense</em></p><p>The structural mode of defense focuses on the system&apos;s internal architecture - that is, its processes, hierarchies, and frameworks. A system with functioning decentralized decision-making adapts very fast but, even more importantly, has built-in control center redundancies, making the detour into inertia that much harder to accomplish.</p><p>A system structurally hardened against inertia would appear highly flexible and organizationally flat, with decentralized decision-making and modular architecture that can be easily updated or replaced. An attacker would find it hard to exploit an internal protocol when the target system construes all protocols as ad hoc and subject to dynamic alteration by local decision-making nodes acting in a persistent <em>auftragstaktik</em>. It is much more difficult for inertia to take hold when the system is always in a state of anticipatory readiness for change.</p><p><em>Cultural defense</em></p><p>The cultural defense mode focuses on the values, beliefs, and behaviors permeating the system. However, many systems try to deploy agile principles while maintaining internal structures that are antithetical to these values, ending with agile lip service.</p><p>Consider the practice of penetration testing in cybersecurity, when deployed at scale, as a good analogy for the cultural defense mode in practice. Following the analogy, a system deploying this defense mode assumes that it has, and always will have, many potential inertia vulnerabilities that a malicious spell caster can exploit. Therefore, the system&apos;s core belief is that every actor in the system&apos;s network is responsible for continuously anticipating, searching for, and adapting to such exploits. Crucially, actors are rewarded with vulnerability bounties and promoted in the hierarchy for discovering situations where &apos;the king is naked.&apos;</p><p>In practice, a system permeated by these values is also likely to have deployed a version of <em>auftragstaktik</em>, making it very hard to attack with the naked king spell. Such a system would elevate the active seeking of fast feedback loops into a core priority, maintaining its vitality and flexibility. A systemic culture that celebrates adaptability and views rapid change as a golden opportunity rather than a severe threat is inherently more resistant to the naked king spell and the seductive call of inertia.</p><p><em>Aesthetic defense</em></p><p>The aesthetic defense mode focuses on a system&apos;s outward appearance and its interfaces with external conditions. It relates to the way the system appears to outside actors and the information frame it communicates to them. A system aesthetically hardened against the naked king spell continuously evolves its framing, communication strategies, and the symbolic brand it projects to the outside world. It uses its external communications channels to partially or wholly obfuscate its internal condition, camouflage its core protocols, and misrepresent its operational culture.</p><p>This brings me to an interesting subset of the aesthetic defense mode - a strategy I call <em>the naked king gambit</em>. Briefly, a system can mimic being in an inertia state as a defense from malicious spell casters. Such a system would adopt the outward aesthetics of an inertia-bound system as a camouflage. The outward sign is the same; how do you know if it reveals a reality or simulates it?</p><p>In other words, clever courtiers can install a naked king on the throne while running the country behind the scenes. From the outside, the kingdom would appear deeply stuck in inertia, with a naked king seemingly in control. The king might appear to be demented, shallow, or completely insane. It doesn&apos;t matter. Internally, system structure and operational culture might look and behave entirely differently.</p><p>In combination, these defense modes create a layered and dynamic defensive posture against the naked king spell and the seductive onset of inertia. Structural flexibility ensures the system can dynamically pivot in response to external changes, cultural vitality keeps the system&apos;s operations adaptable and anticipatory, and aesthetic dynamism weaponizes the system&apos;s external signals, preventing stagnation. Together, they form a comprehensive defense strategy that protects against inertia and propels the defending system toward continuous renewal.</p><p>In the grand cacophony of competing systems, casting the naked king spell is often the most sublime form of subversion. It is not a battering ram at the gates but a whisper that turns the system against itself. However, their main differences revolve around the music the orchestra should be playing to accompany the sinking of our Titan, so there is no point in thinking about them further.</p><p>You must have also noticed the conspicuous absence of anger at this turn of events among our fellow passengers. After all, depression and acceptance are supposed to be preceded by denial, anger, and bargaining. So how did we jump straight to acceptance?</p><p>Enter the therapeutic state. Shallow, tepid vulgarity in pastels.</p><p>The word <em>therapeutic</em> originates from the ancient Greek <em>therapeutein</em>, “to take care of, provide for,” and is related to another old Greek word - <em>therapon</em>, “attendant.”</p><p>We will return to these terms below, but first, a brief excursus into the forgotten past.</p><p>The premodern, or traditional, state punished transgressions. Preferably in a public spectacle for the amusement of its people. It viewed itself as the protector of a divine order in which some toiled, some prayed, and some fought and maintained the divine order. Bodies, and their proprietors, were viewed as sovereign entities inhabiting a sacred world.</p><p>The modern, or industrial, state had a radically different conception of its role. The modern state severed its ties to the divine, declared victory over it, and imagined itself an all-encompassing Leviathan. The Leviathan had no need to punish transgressors since it was the source of all order, and those transgressors were always to be part of it. Instead, it aimed to discipline all bodies, of which it was now the sole proprietor. To do that, it invented disciplinary institutions – schools, universities, offices, hospitals, and prisons.</p><p>The therapeutic state doesn’t punish or discipline. It doesn’t care about order or the proprietorship of bodies. It inherited the disciplinary institutions of the modern state, but now they are simply vestigial appendages parasitizing on whatever residual energy they can find while tepidly <em>caring</em>. “Sir, I want you to know that we listen and care!” The therapeutic state seems to have only one role - it somatizes by alternate excitement and sedation. Its function is to smoothly transition the masses into acceptance by diverting their anger and medicating their depression.</p><p>The purpose of the therapeutic state is not to maintain a divine order or push forward into the unknown. It is to cope. Inclusively.</p><p>Think of the bureaucrat. A vestigial organ of the now defunct industrial state, found across all its residual disciplinary institutions.</p><p>Leviathan needed the bureaucrat to organize and maintain its disciplinary apparatus. Left to its own devices, it could always be relied on to create Kafkaesque labyrinths into which it could lure its unwitting prey.</p><p>However, the bureaucrat has always been cowardly and would never dare to be the Minotaur in its own mazes. Instead, it would parasitically drain the vital energy of its victims while excreting the busy work necessary to maintain the labyrinth.</p><p>Who knows, future historians might even decide that it was the bureaucrat, having developed class consciousness as the <em>managerial class</em> in the West and the <em>nomenklatura</em> in the lands of socialism, that brought the industrial society to collapse through its sheer parasitic chutzpah.</p><p>In the therapeutic state, the role of the bureaucrat is played by the <em>therapon</em>. Like the strapon, the therapon is an ersatz appendage symbolizing an absence.</p><p>The absence of order, meaning, or direction. Unless you call sinking a move in the right direction.</p><p>The therapon is an attendant. It copes, but shallowly. The therapon listens and cares, inclusively. The therapon seethes when prodded, but timidly.</p><p>The managerial class could at least be counted on for dizzying displays of kitsch vulgarity masquerading as high modern art, the prerogative of the untouchable parasite.</p><p>The therapon aesthetic is a tepid vulgarity in pastels. Crucially, Colonel Graf also ensured that most, if not all, of Ender&apos;s officers, had higher empathy than him.</p><p>Being too empathetic appears to be an obvious obstacle for a military commander who must be ready to destroy an enemy and sacrifice his soldiers. So why would too little empathy hinder a commander or anyone else?</p><p>Empathy is usually associated with soft skills secondary to cold, rational decision-making. It is supposed to be a weakness, a quality for poets, fantasy romance writers, and the like. You wouldn&apos;t want your stockbroker to show signs of empathy, would you? CEOs don&apos;t get awarded bonus points for feelings, do they?</p><p>Well, empathy is not about having feelings <strong><em>for</em></strong> someone&apos;s plight. Instead, empathy is the ability to model what it is <strong><em>to be</em></strong> someone else.</p><p>Expressing feelings <em>for</em> someone&apos;s condition is a projection of one&apos;s internal state onto someone else. We see it everywhere today in the form of virtue signaling.</p><p>However, modeling in one&apos;s mind the internal states of someone else as if they were one&apos;s own is an altogether different process.</p><p>Empathy starts with <em>the other</em>. To begin to empathize, you must acknowledge <em>the other</em> as a conditionally different entity from you, with different beliefs, values, experiences, feelings, and points of view. You then must model how that <em>other</em> would see a situation from their own POV.</p><p>This sounds like common sense, merely a precondition of the golden rule. However, it is an act of profound significance. You just created a synthetic entity that is radically symmetrical to you and then dropped the safety of your familiar POV to adopt the synthetic one.</p><p>Genuine empathy is also intellectually demanding, as it presupposes the ability to create mental models with conditional hypotheticals, emotion mapping, and recursive states. Let&apos;s unpack these.</p><p>First, an empath must create a mental model of the hypothetical state of another person, given a set of conditionals N. This involves imagining the other and modeling the other&apos;s state given some hypothetical conditions that have not happened to you.</p><p>The empath must then map the other person&apos;s hypothetical emotional states onto the model because these states may influence how the other perceives reality.</p><p>In other words, the empath must model what it is to be <em>the other</em> given a set of hypothetical starting conditions and then map what that <em>other</em> might feel like in these conditions in a given moment.</p><p>Modeling anything based on conditional hypotheticals is hard enough for many people. For example, &quot;How would I have felt if I didn&apos;t have breakfast this morning? What do you mean? I had breakfast!&quot;.</p><p>Emotion mapping adds another layer of complexity, as it involves synthesizing emotional states other than one&apos;s own and then ensuring they cohere with the synthetic POV you adopted earlier.</p><p>Finally, the empath must then run the model recursively to identify possible emotional states for conditionals n+1 for that <em>other</em>. In practice, this looks like continuously asking and then answering a question such as: &quot;What would it have felt like to be person X in situation Z given conditionals N, and then have N+1 happen to me?&quot;</p><p>An empath does this mental modeling intuitively and iteratively while observing and operating in changing external conditions. Quite a feat. However, empathic modeling is far less impressive in practice because everyone takes it for granted. Until it disappears, that is. Then it is too late.</p><p>The absence of empathic modeling, particularly at large scales, becomes immediately visible. It is usually followed by disappearing trust, crumbling social and physical infrastructure, and sociopathic behaviors at all scales.</p><p>Returning to Colonel Graf&apos;s logic, you want your commander to be a high empath because that is a precondition to accurately modeling the enemy&apos;s POV, assumptions, and decision-making process. To truly defeat an enemy, one has to truly understand them first.</p><p>The importance of empaths becomes more visible as an organization, or a society, increases in complexity. However, at an individual level, sociopaths would always dominate empaths as long as they can keep one step ahead of the consequences of their actions. Sociopaths generate entropy, but all is fine as long as someone else expands energy on dealing with that entropy.</p><p>You can observe this in large organizations where the energy source for maintenance is disconnected from most or all of the organization&apos;s decisions and actions. Think government bureaucracies, academia, the peacetime military, and large corporations with a long delay between decisions and consequences.</p><p>Over time, sociopaths congregate in management roles in such organizations, pushing out all empaths simply because of the absence of immediate consequences for bad decisions. Ironically, such organizations would expend exceeding energy on signaling an empath culture while smothering it at every step in the death grip of sociopathic managerialism and HR.</p><p>However, empaths become necessary when the delay between actions and consequences is short, even in small teams, units, or tribes. In this scenario, you either act as an empath towards your unit or you get to learn all about friendly fire.</p><p>Conversely, in a situation with a very short delay between actions and consequences, a team without a critical mass of empaths quickly generates enough entropy to tear apart all internal cohesion. This is because empaths are negentropic.</p><p>As an organization grows in complexity, the number of empaths necessary to maintain critical mass increases because more and more organizational elements begin operating in situations with long delays between actions and consequences.</p><p>This brings me to the importance of culture. A culture that valorizes empathy and consequently has a significant average of empaths would be able to operate large complex organizations while staving off entropy. To an outsider, this would appear as a high-trust society.</p><p>A society with a significant average of empaths doesn&apos;t need surveillance cameras on every corner because an empath can model what it would be like to be the person whose bike was stolen. We call them high-trust societies but rarely ask where all that trust suddenly came from.</p><p>A society with a significant average of empaths would likely drive carefully and use indicators. As an empath, you use the indicator when merging into a lane because you can model what it would be like to be the driver who has to suddenly jump onto their brakes when someone suddenly joins in front of them without indicating. You also model what it would be like to be the hypothetical you if that <em>other</em> driver chooses not to jump on their brakes.</p><p>It&apos;s the simple things once you start seeing them. The trick is to see the simple things in aggregate as they add up over time and at large scales. Is that an empath thing?</p>]]></content:encoded>

When Rome stopped believing in its sacred nature, disintegration began.</p><p>The medieval world’s myth was <em>Regnum Dei</em> [The Kingdom of Heaven] and, occasionally, <em>Deus Vult</em> [God Wills It]. The Black Death put an end to that.</p><p>The modern myth oscillated from <em>For God and King</em> to <em>The White Man’s Burden</em>. It was drowned in blood and mud on the fields of WWI and WWII.</p><p>Western civilization has lost its collective myth of the future. It doesn’t even matter how or why. It is not a new thing. Spengler was the first to see it.</p><p>There is only an eternal present now. Hypertrophied consumerism with no sense of purpose, direction, or meaning. A sunset administered by an outsourced answering machine.</p><p>Ironically, when the <s>trotskyists</s> neocons declared the end of history and the last man, thinking it their final victory speech, they instead pronounced the death eulogy for western civilization.</p><p>Without a myth of the future a civilization automatically loses its past as well. The end of history is also the end of the future. That is, the great economic, political, kinetic, and bio/socio/techno war to define the 21st century that is happening all around us.</p><p>I think the second act of the kinetic war is about to start very soon. A proper Year of the Rabbit Surprise. I expect a big Russian offensive by the end of February, this time aimed at destroying organized Ukrainian forces and disrupting the large Ukrainian offensive NATO is preparing for this spring (more on it below), rather than capturing territory. In preparation for this, Russia organized its first mobilization wave in September, giving the 300,000+ recruits around 4 months to train and acclimatize. Russia also created a rather extensive meat grinder along the front in the Donetsk and Luhansk regions, sucking in and grinding up ever larger Ukrainian numbers and equipment.</p><p>If you’ve been paying attention, this is what the Bakhmut battle is all about. It is a relatively narrow front allowing Russia to concentrate artillery and manpower into a slow advance pinning down superior Ukrainian numbers. Ukraine cannot withdraw from there because it would risk the collapse of the entire Donetsk-Luhansk front. So, they must keep throwing reserves into the grinder. There is also the Russian force being assembled in Belarus, on the Ukrainian north flank, intended to either cut off supply lines from the west or pin down a large Ukrainian force away from the main front.</p><p>I have no idea where Russia’s main offensive vector will be, but if I had to guess it will be probing hits across the three main fronts with the main objective being Kharkov. If Russia’s forces can encircle Kharkov, then Ukraine’s entire eastern front will collapse, prompting NATO escalation. I don’t believe for a second Ukraine has any autonomy in suing for peace. The only question is how far US planners are willing to go in the escalation game before hitting the pause button. Have no illusions, if the US hits the pause button on the arms shipments flowing from the combined west, Ukraine’s fate is sealed within a month, at most.</p><p>I think the fate of the pause button will be determined by the success of the planned large Ukrainian spring offensive. Judging from the information allowed to appear in western media, by late April Ukraine will be supplied with enough heavy armor – tanks, infantry fighting vehicles, heavy mobile artillery – to form 2-3 armored brigades. I think the plan is to attempt a deep offensive and cause an embarrassing Russian defeat, followed by a ceasefire and an internal shakeup/split in the Russian state.</p><p>Common sense dictates Ukraine will likely concentrate this armor in the southeast, where it can threaten a full-scale breakout towards Mariupol, cutting the Russian southern front in two. The terrain there is flat and sparsely urbanized, making it good for armored assault. That being said, I think the main Ukrainian assault will be toward Crimea. Such an assault has a much higher potential payout, shorter supply lines from Kherson, and can be supported by NATO aviation from Romania over the Black Sea.</p><p>Why is this war so important? Because it is a direct challenge of the global hegemon by a peer-level nuclear power. The logic of nuclear deterrence dictates the hegemon cannot escalate all the way, as it will be destroyed in the process. In other words, eventually, after a serious escalation in the second act, the hegemon must negotiate and meet at least some of Russia’s terms in the third act. We are about to enter the second act, and both parties are putting the finishing touches on their escalation moves. The only question is how these escalation dynamics play out within the larger context.</p><p>As I wrote back in July, this war was set up by US/UK planners as an entropy trap for Russia and the EU. Both actors are now sucked deeper into the trap and face rising energy costs to their internal systems. Russia views this as an existential danger and has to mobilize and restructure internally to survive, while the EU, having no true sovereignty of its own, is doomed to experience the trap as an economic and industrial collapse.</p><p>The EU is sinking deeper and deeper into the quagmire. The US is simultaneously pushing Germany into a bigger confrontation with Russia and squeezing German industry out of global markets by cutting it from cheap Russian energy. With Nord Stream conveniently blown up (what a splendid coincidence), the EU is forced to buy its gas from the US at much higher prices, undercutting its industry even further. This year EU industry will be facing a choice fork – either relocate to the US or keep limiting production* *and firing staff until production becomes unfeasible.</p><p>What is most interesting to me is whether Asia joins the PvP server this year. The best and obvious candidate for another entropy trap is Taiwan, and the US has been carefully constructing another Ukrainian scenario around it, with Japan most likely assigned to play the role of Poland. The US and its client states are trying to bait China into a similar trap they succeeded in baiting Russia into.</p><p>There is a very big difference between Ukraine and Taiwan though.</p><p>Roughly 50% of global container traffic passes through the Taiwan Strait, and roughly 70% of global computer chip production comes from Taiwan. Simply put, the epicenter and beating heart of global trade and technology development is in the area bounding the South China sea. China controls that area, and its unprecedented build-up of naval power (China is responsible for roughly 60% of global shipbuilding) is a sure sign that it has no intention of relinquishing that control.</p><p>Will the year of the rabbit lead to a war in the South China Sea? I don’t think so, not yet. An escalation here, happening now, will have completely unpredictable ripple effects globally. I think a war in this area becomes highly likely next year if the Ukrainian spring offensive is successful and Russia is forced to sue for peace before facing internal strife and possibly collapse/partition. If that happens, Russia is out of the picture and the hegemon can focus all its attention on China. If Russia’s upcoming offensive is successful and manages to disrupt US plans on that front, we are in for some interesting Plan B options.</p><p>What might they look like? We are in the intermission. The Sultry Summer Special. It’s shaping up to be a long play, with big strategic and operational implications.</p><p><strong>Strategic: Who Will Build Back Better?</strong></p><p>The UK/US block has dominated the geostrategic chessboard partially since 1918, and completely for the last 33 years, since its comprehensive defeat of the Communist block.</p><p>Francis Fukuyama declared The End of History and the arrival of The Last Man in 1992, openly announcing the victory of the new and improved 1000-year <s>Reich</s> liberal democratic order. A new and final paradigm for the globe.</p><p>For various reasons, this paradigm proved untenable, and its builders knew it. What would you do if the system you’ve set up and controlled for a century is falling apart and cannot be salvaged? You lead the demolition of the old and the transition to a new system. Build Back Better as it were.</p><p>A global system has a vast number of moving parts, most of which are invisible to the masses. The masses usually see only the TV and the Fridge, or the other way around if the situation is desperate.</p><p><em>Panem et circenses</em>. This is the dialectic under which the systemic transition dramas usually play out for the masses. If the TV is on top, everything is fine and the system is stable. When the Fridge prevails, as it invariably does, things are going badly and the system needs a realignment.</p><p>How amusing that the empire in the <em>Hunger Games</em> was called <em>Panem</em>. Get it?</p><p>With the war in Ukraine, the TV/Fridge dialectic is again in play. The visible moves in the global systemic realignment have finally started in earnest. The only question is who will be the last player standing, the one to Build Back Better.</p><p>By invading Ukraine, Russia triggered the strategic trap set for it by UK/US planners. Its prescribed role was to commit fully, place the Fridge on everyone’s mind, escalate until all of Europe is involved as well, and close the second act by leading the disintegration of the entire Eurasian political structure.</p><p>Interestingly, so far Russia has not mobilized and committed fully to the war, leaving the majority of its regular forces in reserve. Nevertheless, food and energy prices are going through the roof across the West, and shortages are very much on the agenda. Soon, the Fridge will be on everyone’s mind.</p><p>Europe is already involved way deeper than it would have seemed possible even a year ago. The energy and food sanctions the EU imposed on Russia are a fast-track systemic suicide for the union. So far, apart from Ukraine, the EU has been the biggest loser of this war. Also, winter is coming.</p><p>China has taken Russia’s side, which was to be expected, given it is one of the main contenders for Building Back Better after the play is wrapped up. The fact that Brazil, India, and the Greater Middle East, from Egypt to the Gulf States, Iran, and Turkey, refused to take part in any sanctions on Russia is far more telling. They are hedging their bets.</p><p>Not strong enough to win this round of the great game, Brazil, India, and the Greater Middle East will try to be on the winner’s side. The fact all of them are still hedging their bets this late into the first act demonstrates how uncertain the outcome is.</p><p>I think the UK/US dramatic sanction gambit early on was a strategic mistake. They played all cards of the sanction game in one go, denying themselves the ability to control the escalation pace through economic means. For comparison, notice how slowly the Russian counter-sanctions are unfolding. They control the pace for maximum effect.</p><p>Cutting Russia from the legacy Western financial network was part of this strategic gambit. All it achieved was to smooth Russia’s transition into China’s financial system. China&apos;s alternative to SWIFT is called CIPS. Cross-border Inter-bank Payments System. China’s alternative to Visa and MasterCard is called UnionPay. We will be hearing a lot more about CIPS and UnionPay in the coming years, as more and more countries switch to the Chinese financial system.</p><p><strong>Operational: Europe Goes For The Trifecta</strong></p><p>On an operational level, this war is about Europe, or, more specifically, the systemic deconstruction of the European landmass from Lisbon to the Urals. The best illustration of how far this deconstruction will go is the interesting case of Switzerland.</p><p>Switzerland banned Russians from accessing its territory and/or using its banks. For reference, Switzerland has been neutral for centuries, neutrality was its main brand. The Swiss were the mountain goblins with whom everyone kept their gold. Even Harry Potter’s parents kept theirs with the Swiss!</p><p>Switzerland remained neutral even during WW1 and WW2. Not anymore. The mountain goblins will now take your gold if they feel like it. Not a winning long-term banking strategy.</p><p>While Switzerland suicided only its banking industry, the EU block, led by Germany, suicided <em>all</em> of its industry by sanctioning Russian funds and energy. Without Russian gas German industry faces catastrophic collapse.</p><p>Germany’s trade balance is already in catastrophic collapse mode, as is the Euro. The former has gone negative for the first time since modern unified Germany exists, and the latter has gone below the USD for the first time since its creation. Also, winter is coming.</p><p>Then, there are the future food shortages everyone is already talking about. Official food inflation is around 10%, unofficial at least double that. Yes, the Fridge is here.</p><p>Europe has the unique honor of being the only continent to achieve three (3) collective suicides in a row within 100 years. World War I, World War II, and the current play. The trifecta.</p><p>Interesting times ahead.</p>]]></content:encoded>

            <content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>I recently spent some time in a rather isolated mountain village, where I was able to observe an interesting lesson about the modes of power in turbulent times.</p><p>The village head was a man born and raised there, elected repeatedly for the same position for decades. He was connected to a powerful political party, and doubled as the head of the regional hunting club. Clearly popular with the locals, on first names with the regional authorities, clearly bearing all the attributes of power. The person you go to visit when you just move in and want the local power to know you exist.</p><p>However, when the locals needed help organizing a festival they turned to an otherwise unassuming woman, a decade old addition to the village, who was quite frail after a recent chemotherapy. Why? Supposedly she could organize things. When an unexpectedly large number of people turned up for the festival and a number of foreigners found themselves without lodging, people gave them her number. She will help you, they said. Perhaps unsurprisingly, one night the throng of visitors ended up exhausting the village water supply. The village woke up to a looming disaster, or so I thought. The locals were not moved though.</p><p>As it turned out, the unassuming woman had called the head of the water company from the nearest large town first thing in the morning, asking him to activate a mountain water pipe bypass and supply the village until the visitors leave. Apparently, it was expected that she would know about things such as mountain water pipe bypasses and will somehow fix this problem. True story.</p><p>What to make of this scenario? It is easy to say the village head is an incompetent vestige of the patriarchy with visible but largely ceremonial power, while the empowered yet unassuming woman holds the less visible but real power. That is how this scenario would appear in a Netflix fantasy series. Let’s presume you have no use for cartoon stencils though.</p><p><strong>The familiar duality</strong></p><p>There is such a thing as <em>visible power</em>, and it does not need to be exercised often in order to be effective. It is visible because its attributes <em>have to be</em> easily recognizable in the leaders of this or that hierarchical organization. Warlords, CEOs, kings, bowling club presidents, generals, popes, village heads. The larger and more vertically centralized the hierarchy, the more visible the power of its head.</p><blockquote><p>All power is a function of architecture and aesthetics, of topology and appearance.</p></blockquote><p>The architecture of visible power is hierarchical, its topology – tending towards centralization. Its aesthetics and appearance involve visible attributes which can be observed from outside the structure. Visible power is not omnipotent, like all modes of power its architecture and aesthetics simply allow it to be effective in a given context, while severely limiting it in others.</p><p>However, not all power is visible. There is a type of power that is very effective but does not carry any of the aesthetic attributes of visible power. Let’s call it <em>flow power</em>. It doesn’t compete with visible power, it stays mostly latent, but when something breaks everyone turns to it because of its ability to get things done. I call it <em>flow</em> power because it allows the network to operate and resolves or routes around blockages. Again, it doesn’t lead in the context of the larger system, as visible power does, it just gets things done. Like the unassuming woman.</p><p>If you’ve spent an extended amount of time in a hierarchical organization – large corporations, the army, academia – you’ve learned to intuitively recognize flow power. If you need something done, or a problem fixed, you look for flow power. Often, say if you are new to an organization, you need to go to visible power first so that it can point you to flow power directly. Flow power is usually found somewhere in the middle of large hierarchical organizations, where it is close to the action, is not crippled by the requirements of visible power and has enough room to maneuver and get things done. That is the level of company mid-management, or the army ranks from lieutenant to major – close enough to the action <em>and</em> to the decision center.</p><p>Paradoxically, the architecture of flow power is also hierarchical – it is a binary of visible power and needs it to function effectively. Of course, up to a certain level of complexity the two can be combined, the unassuming woman could also become the village head, and would perhaps be far more effective than the old village head as a wielder of both visible and flow power at that level. However, the more complex and hierarchical the organization, the harder it is to hold both powers in the same center. This is because to remain effective, flow power has to be close to the action, while visible power has to be at the top of the pyramid.</p><p>Startups usually begin with both types of power in the same hands, and this persists until the organization stratifies to a level that makes it impossible to effectively keep both types of power in the same node in the network. The more complex the topology of the network, the more the aesthetics of flow power differentiate it from both visible power and everyone else in the network.</p><blockquote><p>Every hierarchy relies on visible power to represent it externally, and flow power to keep things together internally.</p></blockquote><p>You can see this clearly with the evolution of power modes in the military. In a warband, both visible and flow power are in the hands of the war chief. He visibly leads from the front and keeps the simple structure together. We see this evolving with the organized armies of antiquity. Alexander the Great kept the visible power and led from the front, but his army was complex enough that it could function without him, because of the flow power of his generals. Once Alexander and his companion cavalry would charge into the fray the army held together and adapted only because each of his generals wielded delegated flow power.</p><p>By the time of Caesar and the far more complex organization of the Roman legionary army, the architecture of power had evolved further. Caesar wielded the visible power, but did not need to lead from the front. Flow power was even more decentralized, and now in the hands of the centurions at the head of each cohort. The military and personal genius of Caesar was in the fact that at times of ultimate stress, when his heavily outnumbered army faced catastrophic collapse, as at the battle of Alesia, he was able to fluidly assume flow power locally as needed, and then immediately relinquish it when he was not necessary in that sector.</p><p>This evolution can be pursued to the present, and it is fairly easy to spot a common trend. Both visible and flow power are emergent, and will appear organically in a group of people even without formal organization imposed from outside. With the rise of complexity in an organization the two powers diverge. Visible power remains at the top, while flow power is distributed to an ever expanding number of nodes.</p><p>Now, if you look at an organization from the outside, as an attacker, and if outright takeover of visible power is impossible or undesirable, obviously you would try to target flow power. Doing so can cripple an organization while its visible power attributes remain intact. The more complex and centralized an organization, the easier it is to locate its flow power nodes. This brings me to an important point.</p><p><strong>There is a third mode of power.</strong></p><p>It is not visible, and not as easily found as the mid-level flow power which makes things run. It is best explained by thinking about organizations as networks. Centralized networks – think <em>pyramids</em> – are hierarchical and vertically integrated. They are very resilient, scale well up to a point, and provide a visible power structure. The pyramid is good at mobilizing resources, and has strong inertia which allows it to deal with most static resistance.</p><p>This is why historically the dominant form of social organization has been a flavor of monarchy – from warbands to corporations. Both warbands and corporations exhibit the most stable form of visible power – the elected monarch. In warbands that role is played by the war chief, in corporations – by the CEO. As the pyramid’s organization evolves, flow power separates from visible power and travels midway between visible power and the periphery where the organization encounters reality.</p><p>By comparison, decentralized networks – think <em>bazaars</em> – are far less hierarchical, if at all, and integrate horizontally rather than vertically. They are even more resilient than pyramids, and under certain conditions – think insurgencies – can grow stronger when put under pressure. Unlike pyramids, bazaars are usually ruled by oligarchies which are not necessarily visible from the outside. The optimal bazaar does not have any visible power, and you might spend a long time engaging with it without ever finding its power centers. Why is that?</p><p>Because, since power is a function of architecture and aesthetics, bazaars exhibit a third mode of power, different from visible and flow power. The bazaar topology is either decentralized, or completely distributed, without a visible central command node and its supporting structure. Bazaar aesthetics is therefore not related at all to visible power, but rather to the amorphous and fluid architecture of the bazaar. It is chaotic and transgressive.</p><p>I am calling this third mode <em>hermetic power,</em> after Hermes, the Greek messenger god. Hermes is the messenger between the realms of the gods, humans, and the dead. His winged sandals carry him between domains, he is a connector and carrier of information. In antiquity his holy places were situated at the crossroads, symbolizing the amorphous and transgressive nature of the information domain.</p><p>Hermetic power is also emergent, but unlike the other two modes it is most effective when invisible from the outside. The less visible the information, the more valuable it is. Where the pyramid generates the visible pharaoh and his priests who run the structure, the bazaar generates anonymous people in the know. Where visible power relies on loyalty, and flow power on competence, hermetic power relies on trust. In a pyramid, you gain power either by moving to the top, or by keeping the bottom and middle together. In a bazaar you gain power by generating information the others in the bazaar can trust and act on. That’s the essence of hermetic power.</p><p>Hermes’ power was the ability to carry information between realms. Similarly, hermetic power is distinct from the other two modes, because, unlike them, it can move in and out of non-bazaar structures with ease. Visible power is limited to its own architecture, and so is flow power. You get to be middle management only in one organization at a time. You get to be pope, emperor, or village head only of this one pyramid. If you want to also be the head of another pyramid, you have to visibly take it over.</p><p>By contrast, hermetic power can connect to a number of pyramids simultaneously and extract information from them while remaining invisible. More, it can also inject and manipulate information within them, and still remain invisible. From the perspective of topology, this is because a distributed network operates at faster cycles than a centralized one, and can easily transect it, particularly if it also tries to keep its nodes invisible. From the perspective of aesthetics, the bazaar cannot be fully grasped by a pyramid because it always extends beyond it.</p><p>There is a lot more to say about hermetic power, but this post is getting too long, so I will leave you to consider the following scenario:</p><p>What would change if an adversarial hermetic power takes over the flow power of a state? What if it is a number of states? How would you recognize this is happening?</p>]]></content:encoded>

Because at a macro level propaganda is noise, and in times of turbulence there is nothing more valuable than the ability to see through the noise.</p><p>Nassim Taleb once said that the facts are true, but the news is fake. I always thought this a rather optimistically naïve view of reality, full of faith in the inviolate good nature of facts. Facts are far more devious and complicated than Taleb gives them credit for. In a previous post <a target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow ugc" class="dont-break-out" href="https://turbulence.substack.com/p/why-are-the-leaves-falling">I talked about </a>what it means to recognize trends, how not to be confused with facts, even the “true” kind, and how to go about examining your assumptions. Here, I will consider how even if the facts are fake, and the news is fake, their effects can teach us a lot about what might be true.</p><p>In my experience, most people are quite confident they can recognize propaganda and, what is more, consider themselves more or less inoculated against it. Of course, this is the ideal environment for propaganda to thrive in, as most people willingly make the mistake of defending their opinions as if they were essential elements of their identity, and would rather suffer the consequences of their mistakes than admit they were wrong. Everyone has encountered people who offhandedly cancel large chunks of data with ‘that’s X propaganda’, where X is the designated enemy.</p><p>I recently witnessed the following conversation between a millennial (M) and a boomer (B).</p><p>M: What do you think about [something politician X said] about the war in Ukraine?</p><p>B: Why do you ask me that?</p><p>M: I think it’s important to raise awareness.</p><p>B: What’s so important about it? You are so brainwashed! Where did you hear this, the internet?</p><p>M: Yes, I saw it on YouTube.</p><p>B: Ah! That’s the problem with you young people. You are all so brainwashed with your internet. You should watch TV!</p><p>M: TV?</p><p>B: Yes, the truth is on the TV!</p><p>Of course, the problem is not just with the internet or the TV, and it’s nowhere near as simple as the cartoon stencil battle of fake vs true news. To begin with, propaganda is a consistent and enduring process targeting perception, and so to understand propaganda and how to defend against it you have to understand perception.</p><p><strong>Perception and action</strong></p><p>Contrary to the meme that we are now bombarded with more information than ever before, we humans have always drifted in an ocean of data. Everything known to us through perception is pure data, this is how our minds encounter the world. Reading a newspaper, listening to a bird, smelling crushed pine needles, feeling the wind on your face, or all of the above, these are all just sense-derived data inputs which our mind uses to dynamically build a perception frame of reality.</p><p>The white noise chaos of the real is comprised of infinite data streams out of which our minds frame the incomparably poorer picture of reality we can perceive. We sense an infinitesimally small sliver of the real, and for a good reason. We need to not only perceive, but also operate in this reality. We need to be able to make choices, predict potential outcomes, and act based on them in a fast changing environment. Given the physical limitations of how much brain processing power you can cram into a body evolved to survive in a scarce and hostile environment, a limited perception frame makes it easier to quickly eliminate non-essential data, make choices and act.</p><p>The limited frame works as part of our perception system even when our actions are misaligned with what was necessary to do, because we can quickly observe the results of our actions and correct them. Having less initial data in a complex environment speeds up and improves the decision feedback loop, given that the loop is <em>iterative</em> and we can <em>access real data</em>. This point is very important for what follows, so I will explain it in more detail.</p><p>Having the correct data on whether a mushroom is edible or poisonous can lead to a dramatic variance in the results of your decisions and actions regarding said mushroom. Obviously, there is a high premium on correct data if wrong data leads to death. Having the correct data in a rapidly changing environment is like having a shortcut, or a cheat sheet. In fact, that is exactly how our mind stores and processes data repeatedly proven as correct – as shortcut blocks [<a target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow ugc" class="dont-break-out" href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1D8QxGE5atY"><em>schema</em></a>]. They can be very simple – red mushrooms are bad, and quite complex – if the government puts price controls on diesel better buy as much diesel as possible.</p><p>A mind operating based on such shortcuts has tremendous competitive advantage as it can act very fast and dedicate the freed processing power to other tasks. This is why every long-lasting and functioning culture has a long list of taboos and cultural norms derived from many centuries of experience. They are all just mental shortcuts packaging long data – decision – action – consequences loops into a simple cheat.</p><p>Where things get really interesting is in those cases where we have the <em>wrong</em> data, resulting in the wrong assumptions, decisions, and actions. Why? Because presuming you survived your wrong assumption-decision-action chain (congratulations!), you now have a choice:</p><p>1] You can decide to stop assuming, deciding and acting altogether. [<em>Many such cases!</em>]</p><p>2] You can ignore the entire episode and keep on as if it didn’t happen. [<em>A crowd favorite</em>]</p><p>3] You can decide to change your assumption-decision-action chain. [<em>The rare choice</em>]</p><p>The first two choices are always good value when observed from a safe distance, and can also be quite educational for the connoisseur observer, but let’s focus on the rare choice. You thought you are making the correct assumption-decision-action chain but it ended up being misaligned with what you expected as a result, and through some deductive reasoning you established that you’ve made a mistake. Something has to be changed.</p><p>Where do you start if you want to change your assumption-decision-action chain? Correct, you have to go back to the beginning of the chain and examine your data. Sure, the mistake may have been in your assumptions, or the decisions you took, or even in your execution, but since you already made the rare choice you might as well assume that the data you started with is wrong. This means you have to examine your environment again, and gather new data.</p><p><strong>Interlude: the connoisseur observer</strong></p><p>As an aside, since you like making rare choices you might also be a connoisseur observer, in which case there are many scenarios where you can observe when <em>others</em> make the wrong assumptions, decisions and actions based on the wrong data. As a connoisseur observer you can learn from that as if the experience was your own. What is more, often the connoisseur observer likes to speculatively imagine what having the wrong data, and therefore the wrong assumption-decision-action chain, would mean in a given scenario, and collects these imaginary speculative scenarios for fun and future reference.</p><p><strong>The problem with data: what if all the facts are fake?</strong></p><p>In any case, as long as you can access your environment directly and gather fresh new data we can say that you have <em>access to real data</em>. As long as you can keep examining your environment in order to refresh your assumption-decision-action we can say that your decision feedback loop is <em>iterative</em>.</p><p>What happens when you don’t have iterative access to real data? Quite simply, this means you can’t correct any wrong schema shortcuts you have in your mind. The schema cheat codes might have been true and tested at some point in the past, but are not true anymore. If you are inclined to make either of the first two popular choices above – stop bothering with decisions and delegate them to authority figures instead, or ignore your mistakes – it is likely you won’t even notice the change until the effects of the misalignment become unavoidable. If you are a connoisseur observer however, you still have the option of finding real data in the actions of others, even if you can’t collect data directly. You can also revise your assumptions by speculating on various data scenarios that are not yet true but might be. All fairly straightforward.</p><p>Where it gets really interesting is when you have iterative access, but <em>the data you have access to is itself corrupted</em>. This is a counter-intuitive situation, because we are evolutionary wired to trust our senses. You see stuff happen, and therefore it must be true. You saw it! Our narrow perception frame may be a competitive advantage in a dynamic environment, but it is also a bottleneck that can be targeted and exploited. If someone is <em>consistently</em> fed corrupted data over a meaningful period of time, most of their mental shortcuts will be aligned with the corrupted data and misaligned with external conditions. Moreover, they will be convinced their assumption-decision-action chain is correct because of the iterative access to data they think is real. Simply put:</p><blockquote><p>Manipulating the data inputs will always result in control of the perception frames built from those inputs.</p></blockquote><p>In other words, even if you took option 3, the rare choice, and tried very hard to examine your assumptions and get new data from your environment, if the data itself is consistently corrupted you won’t be able to make the necessary course corrections. Even if you make corrections they will be the wrong ones, since your starting data is wrong. Furthermore, you won’t have any way of knowing this is happening, unless, as a connoisseur observer, you are consistently entertaining various outlandishly speculative data scenarios and comparing their output, and the actions of those around you, to what you perceive.</p><p>If you’ve read carefully so far you ought to have noticed that everything I’ve discussed up to this point is at the individual scale. Scale matters, because humans are social animals and like to compare and cohere with each other, drawing cues about the surrounding reality from the behaviors of those around. The problem is that while the phenomenon of the connoisseur observer exists only at the individual level and cannot be scaled up, modern propaganda is a phenomenon of mass scale, and its effects only improve as it scales up further.</p><p><strong>Scale, the masses, and the current thing</strong></p><p>Our ancestors knew well the power of injecting targeted data into someone’s perception frame, hence why “thou shalt not bear false witness”. Even so, for most of known history Lincoln’s saying held true:</p><p>You can fool all the people some of the time and some of the people all the time, but you cannot fool all the people all the time. Until recently, it was physically impossible to manipulate data inputs at scale large enough to affect entire populations. You could generate a completely synthetic picture of reality and drive the population of a given area to hysteria – as in the Salem witch trials or periodic pogroms against this or that minority – but it could only be done locally. Things changed dramatically with the industrial revolution, mass literacy, and the arrival of broadcast media.</p><p>The industrial revolution needed workers who can be disciplined to operate complex machinery, follow commands, and perform repetitive tasks as if they themselves were machine extensions. To achieve this, mass schooling was introduced in the 19th century to supply these workers, first in Prussia and then everywhere else. Gradually, the new paradigm raised hundreds of millions of people regimented to perceive and act similarly, obey authority [teacher-factory manager-political leader], and read abstract symbols encoding data. As everyone who has gone through the full cycle of schooling knows, you need to raise your hand in a silent plea for the teacher’s permission to speak. Mass schooling’s first and primary lesson – authority has to be obeyed and individual agency delegated to it.</p><p>The masses emerged, and with them the glories and wonders of <em>the current thing</em> and the long 20th century. The ability to target the perception of the masses at scale aligned just in time with the arrival of the first global current thing – WWI – known at the time as “the war to end all wars”. Broadcast media – first newspapers, then radio and television – gave the masses an unending stream of regimented data [it’s called a <em>program</em> for a reason] targeting the primary communication senses and already framed as coming from an authority. The masses were raised and trained to align with and follow whatever the authorities say is the current thing. The mass scale effect amplified every message, as everyone around seemed to be in agreement. All these people agreeing on this current thing can’t all be wrong, can they? Suddenly, you could fool not some, but most of the people <em>all the time</em>.</p><p><strong>The regimented mind</strong></p><p>The first person to think systemically about perception, and what can be done with it given the power of manipulating data inputs <em>at scale</em>, was Edward Bernays [Sigmund Freud’s nephew], known as the inventor of propaganda and public relations. This is how he describes propaganda – a term he coined – in his 1928 book [emphasis mine]:</p><blockquote><p>Modern propaganda is a consistent, enduring effort <em>to create or shape events</em> to influence the relations of the public to an enterprise, idea or group.</p><p>Propaganda is creating <em>circumstances</em> and <em>pictures in the minds</em> of millions.</p><p>In its sum total propaganda is <em>regimenting the public mind</em> every bit as much as an army regiments the bodies of its soldiers.</p></blockquote><p>Notice that according to this definition propaganda is all about the creation of entirely synthetic realities [events, circumstances, pictures], which, in turn, will generate entirely synthetic and controlled perception frames. As I pointed out above, if the initial data is synthetic so will be the perception frames built from this data. Again, manipulating the data inputs by “creating or shaping events” will always result in control of the perception frames built from those inputs.</p><p>The main issue here is that Bernays described the creation of synthetic data in the minds of millions <em>at once</em>. Suddenly, it is not a localized minority that finds itself temporarily misaligned from reality, but the majority or entirety of a given population all at the same time. A completely synthetic event is generated across all major media, everyone sees it, and the media keeps returning to it [iterative access]. The scale guarantees the ‘everyone agrees’ mass effect. It doesn’t matter if the event really happened in some actual physical form, or if it ‘happened’ but in a fully synthetic setting, or if it didn’t happen at all. What matters is that the masses <em>saw it happen</em>, and more importantly, <em>saw each other see it happen.</em></p><p>To achieve this level of regimentation with minimum friction, good propaganda messaging is kept simple and coherent with little to no internal contradictions. After all, the aim of the process is to manipulate and regiment the perception of the masses at scale, and to therefore influence and to control their future actions informed by that shared perception frame. The frame has to be internally coherent. The ideal propaganda content is visceral and polarizing, without doubt or uncertainty. A well designed propaganda process leaves no place for distinctions or qualifications, everything is binary and stencil-clear. An important side effect of the mass-deployment of simple and internally coherent perception frames is that it now becomes much easier to detect individuals who think differently.</p><p><strong>Interlude: the connoisseur observer</strong></p><p>A careful reader would immediately realize that it is much harder to be a connoisseur observer when surrounded by a population enacting a synthetic perception frame. Due to the mass scale effect there are little to no spaces left unaffected by the synthetic frame one can retreat to. The connoisseur observer has to not only focus on maintaining iterative access to real data but also on camouflaging their actions in such a way so as not to reveal they operate with a non-synthetic perception frame. In effect, in such a scenario the connoisseur observer has to maintain an internal non-synthetic perception frame coupled with an external synthetic pseudo-frame.</p><p><strong>Propaganda</strong></p><p>What do we have so far in terms of propaganda characteristics? It creates synthetic realities, exploiting our narrow perception frame and the importance of schema. It works best at mass scale, the grander the better. It is internally coherent, visceral, simple and polarizing. It has a regimenting effect, generating <em>predictable and controllable</em> lockstep action chains in the masses. These are all useful, but I can unpack them further into a very crude but actionable schema of modes and strategies for recognizing the process on first encounter.</p><p><strong>Modes</strong></p><p>No matter how complex the various propaganda techniques, at its root the process can be described as having two primary modes, with the complexity emerging from the way the process oscillates between them. The primary modes of propaganda can be roughly described as <em>mobilizing</em> and <em>integrating</em>.</p><p><em>Mobilizing propaganda</em></p><p>Mobilizing propaganda [MP] is the most basic form of the process. It aims to agitate its subjects towards a certain perception frame by shocking, provoking and agitating. It works by appealing to basic instincts such as fear, or basic emotions such as love and hatred. It always simplifies reality to stencil binary statements. Due to its crudeness it is most effective over the short term, but is also the most intensive form of propaganda. Most people fall victim to it due to its brutal intensity. Every time you see reality framed along the lines of &apos;X sank our innocent passenger ship!&apos; [think Lusitania], &apos;Y is killing babies&apos; [think first Gulf war], or ‘the children are drowning – we must do something!’ [think Europe refugee wave], you are dealing with MP. You recognize it best by observing your own emotions, and, if you are a connoisseur observer, the emotions and reactions of others.</p><p><em>Integrating propaganda</em></p><p>Integrating propaganda [IP] on the other hand aims to sedate and co-opt its subjects towards a perception frame. It works by appealing to our socializing instincts, the desire to belong and be a part of something bigger than us, to participate in something good and meaningful. Where MP is intense and emotionally harrowing, IP is mellow and positive. It works through simple mantras such as &apos;the right thing&apos;, &apos;one of us&apos;, ‘yes we can’. While MP aims to shock into a polarized frame generating a course of action, IP aims to reinforce an idea, object, or action positioned within a frame of belonging. You recognize it best by looking for the central element of the frame generating the feeling of belonging. Whatever is positioned in the center of the frame is the element being sold through sedative integration.</p><p>The simplest example of these modes is footage of soldiers in the middle of violent combat, followed by soldiers lovingly embracing their loved ones. A well designed campaign oscillates fluidly between the MP and IP modes, first raising the emotional agitation and then reinforcing it through sedative integration.</p><p><strong>Strategies</strong></p><p>Either of the P modes can be positioned in the minds of the masses through various strategies. The strategies can be, again very roughly, distilled into two primary types, with the variety emerging from the oscillation between them. The two primary strategies of propaganda can be described as <em>vertical</em> and <em>horizontal</em>.</p><p><em>Vertical propaganda</em></p><p>Vertical propaganda [VP] appeals to the views of a hierarchy or an authority figure - &apos;experts have decided&apos;, &apos;a source in the government said&apos;, &apos;scientists agree&apos;, ‘celebrities take a stance’, &apos;the Party points the way&apos;, &apos;most doctors smoke Camels&apos;. The VP strategy is an exploit of the fact the masses are already trained by mass schooling to obey and delegate agency to authority. This is why VP is the easiest strategy to deploy in conjunction with either of the MP or IP modes. Notice that corporate propaganda [advertising] uses this exploit, in conjunction with the IP mode, to regiment brand loyalty. The brand is an authority <em>and</em> a frame one can belong to. This is how we end up with the phenomenon of millions of people professing anti-capitalist views while simultaneously acting as fanatical foot soldiers for the same few corporate brands. VP is easy to recognize, as it has to invariably appeal to an authority figure or a hierarchy. That is why more sophisticated P strategies work horizontally.</p><p><em>Horizontal propaganda</em></p><p>Horizontal propaganda [HP], as the name suggests, appeals to the views of one’s peers rather than an authority or a hierarchy. It works by generating the appearance of a consensus - &apos;everyone agrees&apos;, &apos;my friends told me&apos;, ‘people saw it’. While VP is a tried and tested strategy for broadcast media, HP became a truly powerful weapon only with the arrival of social media. The deluge of content on social media establishes a radical horizontal battle space for all content, where every piece of data competes for limited user attention. Most of these data comes from others ‘just like you’, not from authority figures. This is why the primary filter for quality of content on social media switches from authority to authenticity. The more ‘real’ the person, the more valuable their content. This is why HP thrives on exploiting the ‘authentic person’ point of view. Now, you can mask any synthetic data as coming from ‘an authentic person just like you’. Unlike in the VP strategy, here the propaganda message is delivered as if it was coming from the point of view of someone <em>really there</em>. HP can be very confusing to isolate at first, but it can be recognized by observing whether it comes packaged with an MP or IP mode. If they can’t fit anywhere chances are they are not propaganda.</p><p><strong>Finale: the connoisseur observer</strong></p><p>What can an individual connoisseur observer do in the midst of all of this? Observe, analyze, compare, speculate. Generate a synthetic external pseudo-frame where necessary. Repeat. This is the way.</p>]]></content:encoded>
