This will add color to the Winter Olympics and help spread the culture of traditional Chinese medicine and promote the culture of traditional Chinese medicine to the world.

Fang Yaode, one of the discoverers of Zhangzhou blueberry and a member of the general survey team of traditional Chinese medicine resources of Yunxiao Hospital of traditional Chinese medicine, said in an interview: “the discovery of new species shows the excellent natural ecological environment of Zhangzhou.” In his opinion, Yunxiao County has many high-quality “treasure houses of species diversity” such as Zhangjiangkou Mangrove National Nature Reserve and Wushan scenic spot, and the vegetation in many places is well preserved.

“Birth” of “new species”

It is understood that the fourth national survey of traditional Chinese medicine resources began in October 2018. In order to find out the “family background” of plant diversity in the county, Fujian traditional Chinese medicine resources survey experts and the traditional Chinese medicine resources survey team of Yunxiao County Hospital of traditional Chinese medicine successively went to 9 townships in the county and Changshan Development Zone in Zhangzhou city to carry out field investigation. During the general survey for more than two years, the general survey team of traditional Chinese medicine resources of Yunxiao County Hospital of traditional Chinese medicine, under the leadership of the general survey experts of traditional Chinese medicine resources in Fujian Province, collected and produced 1660 samples of medicinal plants (518 samples of medicinal plants were finally identified and submitted to the national database, and the rest were preserved in Fujian University of traditional Chinese Medicine), 111 kinds of medicinal materials and 72 germplasm resources. In May 2021, the census work successfully passed the provincial acceptance.

According to Fang Yaode’s recollection, on October 6, 2019, the investigation and collection work continued from morning to afternoon. The census team followed Yang Chengzi, an expert in the general survey of traditional Chinese medicine resources in Fujian Province, and walked along the sample line to the place located at 851m above sea level in Wushan scenic spot. “In the shrub forest in the mountain, there is a plant longer than the granite, which is particularly conspicuous.” The census team took photos first, and then collected plant samples and took them back to the hospital to make specimens.

In May 2021, the plant was identified as a new plant species for the first time by experts from the general survey of traditional Chinese medicine resources in Fujian Province. Because it was found in Zhangzhou, the new species was named Zhangzhou blueberry.

The flowering period of the new species is from May to June, and the fruiting period is unknown. Similar to Vaccinium foetidissimum, it has evergreen, obovate to oblanceolate leaves, wedge-shaped or tapering base, basal glands and 3-5 opposite lateral veins, long racemes and 6-10 flowers, but its pubescent young branches are easy to distinguish from shorter leaves. There are inconspicuous veinlets on the front of the leaves and sparse brown glandular hairs that are easy to fall off on the back.

The publication of this new species has increased the germplasm resources of rhododendraceae in Fujian Province and provided new data for the development and utilization of rhododendraceae plants.
