Florida Living is Unsustainable. And Overrated.

Well, well, well, if it isn’t the consequences of one’s actions. Florida has been a hot spot for many residents looking for endless sunny days and no downside. But there is a downside. Farmers Insurance just pulled out of Florida which affects 100,000. About 30% of policies sold in the state. Home, auto, and other coverage will no longer be offered. This is in addition to three other major insurers who have pulled out of the state.

The reason? It’s quite simple. Florida is simply not built for dealing with extreme weather and the increasing risk of hurricanes. These natural disasters are driving up the cost of reinsurance (insurance for insurers), 42 percent higher than the 10-year average.

A bit of game theory here: who insures the reinsurers who are insuring the insurers? It’s never happened before, but best guess is the government. It’s really just a house of cards.

These increased costs are then passed on to policyholders in the form of higher premiums. And, of course, rampant fraud and litigation are driving up insurance rates.

But the main point here is that Floridian homeowners are finding it increasingly difficult to afford or even find property insurance. As a result, the real estate market in Flordia is being disrupted by what was an inevitable crisis and what will be an inevitable outcome: mass amounts of property owners will be uninsured and left to fend for themselves in which Uncle Sam will then swoop in with Gorilla Glue to patch things back together.

Florida is not the place to be right now, despite how glorious people make it look or feel.

Oppenheimer Vs Barbie (or BarbenHeimer??)

In the ever-evolving landscape of Twitter, two seemingly disparate entities have come to the fore of our collective consciousness: Oppenheimer and Barbie. The former, a movie about the scientific prowess of the United States and the destructive potential of human innovation (sound familiar?). And the latter, an icon of childhood that just won’t die.

These two movies are going head-to-head this upcoming weekend in what’s going to be an absolute blockbuster. Thousands of tickets have already sold and tens of thousands have been purchased to see both Barbie and Oppenheimer. See? You can be a barbie fan and an Oppenheimer fan too. Me personally? Undecided. But I will be getting that cool BarbenHeimer shirt though.

xAI

Just as Oppenheimer’s work led to a broader discussion on the ethics of scientific discovery, the recent advancements in AI have led Elon Musk to create a new company called xAI which aims to understand “the true nature of the universe”. Details are far and few between but I’m interested in seeing where this goes. As for the “truth seeker” stuff I’m a bit skeptical. What he really means by that, I have no idea. We’ll just have to wait and see.

Threads has proved to be a formidable competitor to Twitter… and a fad that is quickly dying out. Threads isn’t necessarily going to die completely but it’s going to have it’s own set of dedicated users who are either anti-Musk, anti-Twitter, or were only ever on Twitter out of necessity. Threads is mostly in favor of those who already have an existing audience on Instagram. Otherwise, I think it’s somewhat hard to grow an audience on Threads (besides the fact that the algorithm sucks).

I’m still going to be a Twitter power user. Even with Musk rate-limiting tweets, impressions are far greater on the platform than Threads. And bots have arrived on Threads so it’s lost the lust that was once so coveted.

Twitter may be stagnating in chaos but it is certainly not dying. Threads is not a “Twitter-killer” (not for now at least) and Twitter will live to die another day.

I’ve been thinking about a way to define my twenties: one that’s defined by “breaking glass”, moving fast (but not too fast), iterating upon my previous success in doing the things I love, and learning to just have fun.

Harrisburg, Pennyslvania has been my hometown since I was three. I’ve made many friends, acquaintances, and done many things that I think provide value. But now, I’m looking for something new, looking to “move on” in a sense. Obviously the same things I’ve been doing before to progress are not the same things that are going to get to the next level.

I think about Messi and the F.C Barcelona debacle, Grant Gustin marking Season 9 as his last, and others who have stepped into a next chapter of sorts.

These are people in sports, entertainment, and other areas, some of which have nothing to do with my career focus. But they all have a simple, underlying lesson: to carve one’s own path one must deal with the twists and curves that come with it (and potentially carve their own twists).

I’m not yet at the “final curtain”. Far from it. I do, however, find the need to close one chapter and open another. Moving on is not painless, it comes with things you’ll miss while also coming with things you’ll be excited about. Messi missed Barcelona but looked forward to securing his legacy on high note. Grant Gustin missed the Flash but also looks forward to raising a family. I’ll miss PA but I certainly look forward to potentially moving to NC after graduation. We’ll see if things change in two years when I’m done, but for now my gut and the data tells me NC is the place to be.

I can’t ignore the economic benefits of doing so either. In fact, if I’m being honest, there are economic reasons behind my attraction to this state. $100 billion worth of capital outflows has occurred from the Northeast and moved to the south (Florida, Texas, Georgia, Tenessee, and the Carolinas. And the south now holds 23.8% of the national GDP.

North Carolina (along with other southern states) is emerging as a significant player in the tech industry while also signaling the changing dynamics that innovation is no longer confined to the traditional powerhouses (California, New York, etc.).

I think NC is already emerging as a hub of innovation and I want to be in the midst of it. Part of my work is to seek out asymmetric opportunities and as we experience this socioeconomic shift, I think NC is going to play a large role in the changing tides.

💭 Parting Thoughts

I’m at a crossroads. And so are Oppenheimer and Barbie, xAI and Elon Musk, the Northeast and the South, as well as Florida itself. For all of us, the future is not a fixed point. But each of us have a decision to make, a path to forge that will define how successful our endgame is.

In other words, “never meet your heroes”.

In this era of amplified voices and interconnected realities, individuals like Elon Musk, Joe Rogan, and Andrew Tate have become demigods amongst their massive followings. But the admiration has blurred into blind idolization and that idolization has greatly clouded the discernment of many.

Elon Musk, a beacon of relentless drive and innovation, has a following of 147.4M followers: the most followed individual on Twitter. He’s made successful exits, revolutionized electric cars, and has created multiple multi-billion-dollar companies (and at one point a $1 trillion company). While there is much to admire in his audacity and ambition, it’s overshadowed by his erratic behavior and his intentional (sometimes unintentional) promotion of conspiracy theories.

Achievements, no matter how remarkable, should not absolve individuals of accountability or bestow on them unquestionable authority.

Meanwhile, Andrew Tate, unlike Musk or Rogan, who have made tangible contributions in their fields, is a character who emerged from the darker corners of the internet: a man turned into a pseudo-sage because certain groups of men have elevated him to a pedestal.

He’s mastered the art of virality, I’ll give him that. But this doesn’t excuse the toxic behavior or regressive attitudes that emanate from his very being. In many ways, he has pushed society a couple of steps back, holding certain men captive in a whirlpool of misguided ideas that keep them two steps further from any common sense they had hoped to gain.

When did we morph into a society that prefers to outsource its thinking? Why do we allow ourselves to be swept away by the current of a single individual’s words and actions? We find ourselves in an era where the masses are under the spell of these modern Pied Pipers, blindly following their tune, marring humanity’s individuality and critical thinking in the process.

The recent and rapid rise of the “Threads” app by Mark Zuckerberg and co. is a prime example of this. Mr.Musk who they had once hailed as the champion of free speech is now a pariah as they look to hail Zuckerberg who has supposedly created “Twitter 2.0”. What happened to the belief in Musk creating the new social media superapp? Tossed right in the trash can in favor of something new and shiny.

Breaking free from this dangerous cycle requires us to foster a mindset of discernment and individual thought. Heroes can inspire, motivate, and guide us, but they should never overshadow our capacity to question, analyze, and form our own opinions.

I will be martyred, thrown about like a sheep for slaughter by the followers of these men who so voraciously defend their actions. Doesn’t matter. I am willing to do what a lot of people won’t: call out hero worship for the cultish-like behavior that it breeds. For the ridiculously venerated opinions held in high esteem, I’m here to shoot them down.

This is the last time I will mention Tate in any form. I’m done. I’ve made my point. But do let me say this: to admire is human, to idolize is a perilous slippery slope. We can laud Musk’s tenacity while questioning his actions, admire Rogan’s provision of diverse perspectives without blindly endorsing all his views, and reject false prophets like Andrew Tate who are desperate for attention.

The contemptible era of hero worship needs to stop.

Here’s a debunk of Andrew Tate’s most viral claims:

1. Wealth Equals Superiority

Do I really need to explain this one? One of Tate’s most frequent proclamations is that “Bugattis” and being flush with cash is “Top G” behavior. Countless individuals lead rich lives filled with kindness, innovation, and contributions to society without amassing substantial wealth. The value of a human being extends far beyond their financial status.

2. Emotion is Weakness

Tate has often touted a rather archaic and flawed perspective on emotions, particularly in men, answering that showing emotion equates to weakness. This is a dangerous fallacy. In fact, acknowledging and expressing one’s emotions is a sign of emotional intelligence and strength. It fosters better mental health, stronger relationships, and more resilient communities. EQ > IQ.

3. “Real Men” adhere to rigid stereotypes

Tate promotes a strict, often toxic version of masculinity, where “real men” follow a particular mold: physically strong, financially successful, and emotionally stoic. This stereotype not only harms men, trapping them in some false sense of bravado, but also perpetuates harmful attitudes towards women. You’re driving them away from you. Not towards you. “Be a man” is such a farce. Focus on being a good human with good actions and character as well as respect for others.

Andrew Tate was arrested a couple of weeks ago on rape and human trafficking charges.

The reason I hated it was because of the ridiculous constraints imposed by the school curriculum in the way we were supposed to write. However, one thing I did notice is that each time I created a writing piece I really enjoyed the process of fleshing my thoughts out in a doc and adding some flare and creativity to a piece. Often, it came with good results (an A+) and a sense of accomplishment in the way in which I conveyed my own thoughts.

Recently, I’ve thought about that and how much I’ve enjoyed that process. How much I enjoyed articulating my thoughts in a way that could “hit the point home” so to speak. I found it enjoyable. And I’m looking to do it again.

However, this time is different. I can write however I want about whatever I want without a curriculum hindering my flow state.

Why is this important now? Writing is how you learn. Writing is how you think. I think it’s important that everyone write in one way or another, whether it’s a daily journal or even the occasional tweet. In some way, some form, just write.

She’s right. For so long, I had been a “robot”: a highly scripted person saying the right things at the right time even though deep inside I was a maverick with strongly held convictions. I’ve experienced a paradigm shift in which I’ve become more open about my thinking and thought process but have kept those opinions mostly to myself. Now, through this journal (for lack of a better term) I aim to overcome my fears of not “rocking the boat”. I hope to take a page out of teen Mish’s playbook in being unapologetically different.

For the basketball fans, you know how Steph Curry is able to just shoot without thinking about it?

Notice his relaxed stance, focused and calm demeanor, and strong follow-through. He catches and releases. In a melodramatic manner, he is one with the ball.

That’s what I want. The ability to not be afraid to put my thoughts out there. If I’m wrong, so be it. Correct me. That’s how I learn, that’s how we all learn.

So this is not just me writing for the sake of putting my thoughts out there but also to decrease the time and increase the efficiency with which it takes me to “catch and release” my thoughts. Thus, I’ve made it a goal to dedicate an hour a day to writing.

This new personal blog is a big part of that.

Going back to my maverick roots, I present the Rabbit Hole: an unconventional form of writing with no rules. I’m not looking to rapidly grow a new “newsletter” or gain some sort of fame or fortune off of this. I’m fleshing out my thinking in the open and hopefully it inspires you to do the same, to leave you a little more intrigued and informed than you were before.

It’s an open invitation for anyone to join me on an extraordinary expedition through the wonderful and winding twists of life, the universe, and everything in between. The Rabbit Hole is a weekly rendezvous for my personal musings, engaging stories, and thoughtful insights into things that have left an impression on me during the week. Beyond that, it’s an exploration beyond the surface topics: I’ll cover the thoughts, events, and subtle nuances that often go unnoticed.
