We are excellent at detecting questions, but when users only added Telegram as their data source, our AI was eager to reply but didn’t know enough for its replies to be relevant.

We made use of what we learned during the Agentic Ethereum hackathon and added CrewAI as an operator. While I talked with some people who are specifically looking for an ai bot to engage the community, our first AI chatbot is a support bot. Within this role, project-specific information is prioritized over general knowledge. Our goal is that the AI chatbot remains quiet if it doesn’t know; no need to add more noise.

Our next improvement is to increase the quality of references we add at the bottom of an answer. Every answer ends with 3 top references. In that way, users can learn more. These references need to be top notch. The focus was quests, but not just your typical follow, retweet and like for points quests. Quests matched the culture and Story of Umoji. And yes, you could win money. This is what Karima says on this topic:

Time vs Money: Results require significant time or money. Given our timeline constraints, Umoja chose to invest money in the community to accelerate growth. This was a tricky decision, which the hardest part of it is that if you pour money on the front end, you need to put in the quality time on the back end or you lose your audience.

Worth the read. Don’t rely on Grok to summarize it. If you are short on time, check the headings and focus on what’s relevant to you.

CoUnity is a community building agency helping web3 projects creating and growing sustainable communities.

Like so many of you, he emphasized shifting away from financial motivators to focus on authentic engagement. Start with simple things to build trust (e.g,. AMAs and game nights). If we keep repeating the message it will sink in that there is a place and time for financial incentives, but it's not the solution for everything.

He advocated for using community analytics to better understand audiences and tailor strategies: Get a lot of new sign-ups? Figure out from where (location) and how do they find your community. The conversation also touched on AI's growing role in community management, highlighting its potential to transform interactions.

Key Takeaways:

🔹 Find Your Community Personas: Solid community building starts with understanding who your members are and what drives them. Whether on Discord or other platforms, get to know the demographics and behaviors of your community. Don’t just rely on analytics—have one-on-one chats to really dig deep.

🔹 From Incentives to Intrinsic Motivation: We learned (again!) that too much focus on extrinsic rewards can actually detract from genuine community engagement. Instead of stacking up points or air drops, focus on cultivating members who are intrinsically motivated by the technology and community itself. This could mean fostering connections and coming up with engaging initiatives that aren’t tied to financial incentives.

🔹 Experiment and Iterate: Don't be afraid to try new engagement initiatives! From AMAs to game nights, experimenting is key. Once you see what resonates, build on those successful initiatives—creating a growth flywheel that keeps your community involved and invested.

🔹 Leverage Analytics: Tools like Cookie 3 and TogetherCrew can help you track meaningful engagement and demographics. Getting insights into how your community interacts and evolves over time is crucial. The more you know, the better decisions you can make.

Thanks for reading!
