When people start learning about Bitcoin self-custody, they often focus on the big questions. What’s the best wallet? How do I keep my coins safe?

But once it sinks in that your wallet backup or seed phrase is your money, more practical questions start to come up. Where should I store it? Should I make many copies?

And recently, someone asked a surprisingly good one: Which one lasts longer, pencil or pen?

It may sound like a small detail, but a wallet backup has to survive not just weeks or months, but maybe decades. And when the time comes, those 12, 20, or 24 words need to be clear, complete, and usable.

If you’re new to backups, this quick guide explains the basics.

So I started looking into it. Pencil vs. pen turned out to be just the beginning.
How do you make a backup that really lasts?
What small choices today could spare you stress later?
And how do you leave behind something your future self can actually use?

Let’s walk through it.

Pencil vs. Pen: What Actually Lasts?

Graphite isn’t ink — it’s a mineral. That makes it chemically stable and resistant to fading or chemical reactions. Conservation authorities still recommend soft graphite pencils for permanent notations because they outlast many common inks.

Civil War diaries and old field logs written in pencil are often still legible today — when stored properly — which shows its long-term potential. However, graphite can smudge easily and, in very humid or rough conditions, marks can fade from abrasion or wear. That’s why, if you use a pencil, it’s worth pressing firmly and storing the page carefully.

Ballpoint pens feel more permanent, but their dye-based ink can fade over time, especially with light, humidity, or heat. Ink can also bleed if exposed to water or spills. Archival pens avoid this. They use pigment-based ink, which bonds to the paper and resists fading, smudging, and UV. Artists and architects use them for a reason.

If you’re serious about backup durability, this archival-ink test compares pens under water, UV, and smudge stress. It offers a visual reminder that not all ink is created equal.

Either option can last decades if you choose well and store it right. For pencil, use firm strokes and stable paper. For pen, choose archival ink. And whatever you use, store it somewhere dry and safe.

But a good backup needs more than just durable ink. How you write and organize it matters too.

Good Paper Matters

Before you write anything down, think about the paper itself.

Cheap paper can yellow, tear, or fade over time, especially in damp or hot places. Go for thick, acid-free stock that holds up over the years. Avoid glossy surfaces; they resist ink and smudge more easily.

To protect against water or friction, slip the page into an archival polyester sleeve (such as Mylar or Melinex) or a waterproof zip pouch. Avoid heat-seal lamination; it can trap moisture, warp ink, and accelerate damage over time.

Then tuck it away somewhere secure and out of the way.

Prefer something even tougher? Stamp your wallet backup words into stainless steel. Trezor Keep Metal is made for that. Metal survives fire and water, but it’s less discreet than paper and harder to update.

Number And Check Your Backup Words

Recovering a wallet can be stressful, especially if you’ve never done it before.

If your seed phrase is written in two columns, it’s easy to lose track of the order. Are the words listed across or down? It’s a small detail, but it can cause a lot of confusion and slow everything down.

Numbering each word (1 to 12, 20, or 24) removes that guesswork.

If you haven’t checked your backup before, now’s a good time. Most hardware wallets offer the option to enter your backup words on the device to verify they match. It only takes a moment, and it makes recovery easier later.

Make sure your backup words are numbered and correct, and you will have one less thing to worry about when you need to recover your wallet.

Extra Notes Help Future You

Before storing your backup for good, take a moment to add a few helpful notes.

Write the name of the wallet you used, the date you created it, and whether a passphrase was part of the setup. If it was, make sure you’ve written down the passphrase too: if it is lost, you will lose your funds!

If your wallet uses a multi-share backup, multisig, or holds multiple coins or accounts, make a note of those details too. For multi-share backups, note the total number of shares and how many are needed to recover, at least for the shares you keep for yourself.

These small reminders can make a big difference. Months or years from now, they’ll help you (or someone you trust) recover without guessing.

A few notes today, while those details are fresh, can prevent confusion down the line.

Final Thought

Clear writing, good materials, and safe storage are what make a wallet backup reliable. You don’t need perfection. Just care, consistency, and a few smart choices.

I might be an exception in the crypto space because I’ve been working at Trezor since 2017, which is a long time to stay with one company in this industry!

I’ve watched Trezor grow from a team of 20 into a company of around 200 people that still holds onto its crypto-punk roots, staying true to open-source principles and user-first values. Something I’ve learned is that in crypto, there are no boundaries. Whether you’re in Prague (Trezor headquarters) or San Francisco, you can build innovative products that change the world.

As someone responsible for Trezor’s technological strategy, I strive to balance usability, security, and privacy. This delicate balance is our unique selling point. Despite being fully open-source, this part of Trezor cannot be cloned.

There’s a saying in the security world that I love and firmly stand by:­

“Security at the cost of usability comes at the cost of security.”

That captures exactly what we’re fighting for. Self-custody solutions must be both secure and easy to use because if people avoid them due to complexity, the whole point of crypto security falls apart.

One of the biggest challenges ahead is that it’s not just security tools getting smarter, scammers are too. Social engineering scams are becoming more sophisticated. My advice? Stay alert. Only buy devices from official sources. Never share your wallet backup. Enter the wallet backup only into a Trezor device. Always check the links you receive. And remember: our support will never reach out to you first.

Lastly, a quick note on why we support fewer coins than others: security. We only add coins when we’re sure they’re safe for users to manage. That’s also why I’m pushing for human-readable signing across the industry — to stop blind signing attacks like the Bybit hack.

• Getting paid in bitcoin from your employer or client (who keeps records)

• Posting your address online for donations or tips

• Reusing the same address for multiple transactions (makes it easier to link patterns when combined with public data)

What is a UTXO?

UTXOs = Unspent Transaction Outputs

This is a core part of the Bitcoin blockchain and how ownership is tracked.

A Bitcoin UTXO is a chunk of bitcoin that has been received in a transaction and is still available to spend.

Your wallet holds multiple UTXOs, and together, they make up your total bitcoin wallet balance.

When are UTXOs created?

• Every time you receive bitcoin, a new UTXO is created.

• When you send bitcoin, your wallet uses one or more UTXOs to create the transaction.

• Any amount left over is usually returned to your own wallet as a new UTXO (often via a change address).

“Wait, so UTXOs are just a fancy way to say ‘pieces of bitcoin’?!”

Kind of. But that’s not the whole picture.

A UTXO is technically bitcoin, but it’s a specific piece of bitcoin that you own and can spend. Bitcoin doesn’t exist as a single balance in your wallet; it is multiple UTXOs that each represent a fixed amount of bitcoin from your previous transactions.

A UTXO might hold 12,000 satoshis or 2,000,000 satoshis.

Think of it like physical cash in your wallet:

• Each UTXO is like a bill ($1, $10, $20, $50, etc.).

• All these bills together are the total sum of your wallet.

• When you make a payment, you need to pick the right bills to send and get back the right amount of change.

Unlike cash, UTXOs can be set to any size. There are no restrictions on denominations.

How UTXOs are created, an example:

Let’s say Billy receives 0.5 BTC.

That 0.5 BTC is a UTXO that contains the bitcoin.

If Billy later sends 0.3 BTC to Sean, he creates two new UTXOs:

1. Billy’s wallet uses the 0.5 BTC UTXO as the input

2. His wallet sends 0.3 BTC to Sean (creates a new UTXO for Sean with the received amount minus the fees)

3. It sends 0.2 BTC back to itself as ‘change’ (new UTXO for Billy)

Your wallet can have multiple addresses, each of which can hold multiple UTXOs. So, multiple UTXOs can be combined in one transaction, similar to how you might pay $50 in cash with smaller bills if you don’t have the exact amount.

“Why can’t bitcoin wallets have a total amount like my bank account? Why all this trouble with UTXOs?”

This might seem obvious at first glance. Your bank account has a total amount without all this UTXO business, so what’s the big deal?

Instead of using account balances like banks do, Bitcoin uses more discrete chunks of spendable bitcoin that make up your wallet. Basically, UTXOs give you greater control and a choice over your bitcoin and privacy.

UXTOs serve a very specific purpose for privacy-conscious users who want to organize their bitcoin and decide how their addresses are managed.

Controlling your bitcoin without an exchange involves some responsibility. UTXO-based blockchains let you control what information is revealed, helping you keep your total wallet balance private if you want.

This might take a little bit of work to get your head around, but it’s going to help you with Bitcoin security in the future! Here’s how:

Why should you care about UTXO management?

So we now know that UTXOs allow us to send and receive the correct amounts of bitcoin securely. Why should that matter to you?

Two main reasons:

Let’s start with privacy.

Do you want everyone to know your bitcoin balance?

Imagine if every time you went and bought something, everyone knew your bank balance.

This is what poor UTXO management can lead to.

Here’s how:

Each UTXO is linked to an address. Reusing the same address or combining certain UTXOs can make it easy for someone to trace your transactions.

If someone knows that your identity is linked to one address, they can find out how much bitcoin you own and control… it’s like walking around with a sign on your head saying exactly how much money you have.

Do you remember what I said earlier about Bitcoin transactions?

You might be unwittingly telling everyone how much bitcoin your wallet has. And if someone connects your real-world identity to an address you use that contains UTXOs that reveal your full bitcoin wallet balance?…

People can find out exactly how much bitcoin you own.

It’s bad enough that people might know this information today, but given Bitcoin’s historical price performance (Bitcoin reached a $1 trillion market value faster than any other asset), would you feel comfortable with people knowing how much you own in say, 10 years? Probably not. It could be dangerous.

“I kind of get it, but how does this work in practice?”

Let’s say someone sends you 2 BTC. You now have one UTXO worth 2 BTC in your bitcoin wallet.

Now you receive 0.1 BTC from someone else in another transaction. You probably don’t want them to know that you have 2 BTC in your wallet, right?

So you generate a new address and receive the 0.1 BTC there.

So your total wallet balance is 2.1 BTC, made up of two UTXOs in two addresses (one with 0.1 BTC and one with 2 BTC).

You can control how much information is shared in each transaction with these two addresses. And if you were to combine these UTXOs above into one address? Well, your total wallet value is now visible to anyone involved in both transactions.

That person now knows you hold 2.1 BTC, and possibly your identity, depending on whether the addresses are linked to who you are.

As if that’s not enough reason to learn about UTXOs, not paying attention to this can also cost you bitcoin (literally). Here’s why:

Why you might be paying higher bitcoin fees

The size of a bitcoin transaction fee depends on the number of UTXOs involved because Bitcoin’s fee structure is based on data.

When you send a transaction, you send data to miners, who validate it for a fee.

More UTXOs = more data = more fees (especially if the network is busy)

Sending a single UTXO will not be expensive, but sending a transaction with many UTXOs will cost more because of the larger data size (even if the amount is the same).

Sending 1 BTC using one UTXO = cheaper fee

Sending 1 BTC using ten UTOXs = more expensive fee

So now we know that managing your UTXOs is important for protecting your privacy and avoiding higher fees, what can you do about it? Read below to learn:

UTXO management best practices

You might be wondering if this is even a problem for you right now, and honestly, it depends on your situation. The fact is that it does effect everyone, so you need to be aware. Still, if you’ve received a large amount of UTXOs (for example, if you buy a small amount of bitcoin regularly and spend a lot of bitcoin), you should start considering taking steps to manage your UTXOs sooner rather than later. Since the bitcoin you own today may be worth far more in the future, it’s better to be cautious.

Now that we know that managing these UTXOs is essential, wouldn’t it be great if you could organize them? Yes!

Let’s introduce the concept of UTXO consolidation: the process of combining smaller UTXOs into one larger UTXO by sending a transaction to yourself. This will help reduce fees and simplify your future transactions.

How to securely consolidate your UTXOs

You would usually only want to consolidate UTXOs from the same source (for example, keeping business payments separate from personal savings). This way, you can maintain your privacy while managing your UTXOs efficiently and saving on future fees.

*It’s usually recommended to avoid combining all your funds into a single UTXO*

How do you do this?

First, wait until bitcoin fees are quite low. Then, select which UTXOs you want to combine and send them to yourself, creating a new, single UTXO. This is easy to do in Trezor Suite.

So in practice, you can consolidate UTXOs selectively, maintain your privacy, and avoid higher fees.

Important: If you’re not careful, UTXO consolidation comes with a privacy risk. Although it will reduce future fees, if you merge UTXOs linked to different addresses, you could end up revealing your total wallet balance on the blockchain.

Here’s an example of how UTXO consolidation could lead to your bitcoin balance being revealed:

Billy buys bitcoin monthly, and each time it’s sent to a different address.

He also receives regular bitcoin payments for freelance work he does to the same wallet.

Billy’s wallet contains UTXOs that aren’t linked, so his overall wallet balance remains private, but all these UTXOs will result in higher transaction fees. So Billy decides to consolidate his bitcoin by sending it all to his wallet, creating a new, single UTXO.

By combining and consolidating all these UTXOs at once, Billy is revealing his entire bitcoin wallet balance to the blockchain. Both the exchange that he was buying bitcoin from and anyone who was paying him in BTC can now see his total wallet balance!

2. How to Check the Status of Your Transaction

If your transaction is unconfirmed, you can check its status in Trezor Suite or mempool.space, a Bitcoin block explorer.

Start by opening your account in Trezor Suite and reviewing your transaction history. If it’s been over an hour and your transaction remains unconfirmed, it might still be waiting for a miner to pick it up. To see what’s happening, copy the transaction ID (TXID) from Trezor Suite and head over to mempool.space.

On the front page, you’ll see live fee estimates showing how busy the network is. If you paste your TXID into the search bar, you’ll get more details about your transaction, including whether it’s still in the queue and an estimated confirmation time.

4. Recovery Seed

Think of this as one of the cornerstones of your hardware wallet’s security. During the setup process of your Trezor wallet, you will be prompted to write down a recovery seed. This is a list of words that serves as a backup of your private keys.

Some would call it a master access key. Your recovery seed is a ‘plain English’ representation of a random number, from which all of your keys and addresses are mathematically derived. It is an ordered sequence of 12 or 24 words chosen from this list of 2048 words.

Having a safe backup of your recovery seed means you can recover your Bitcoin in case of hardware failure or the loss of your device.

Remember, do NOT share your recovery seed with anyone. Also, do not enter your recovery seed anywhere unless in your Trezor device upon recovery. Under no circumstance will any Trezor representative seek your recovery seed, over email, customer support, website, or any form of communication.

5. Passphrase

Think of this as an added layer of security for your digital assets. In its most basic form, a passphrase functions like an extra word added to your recovery seed.

Effectively, using your recovery seed alone grants access to your Standard wallet. Each unique combination of ‘recovery seed + passphrase’ grants access to a corresponding unique Hidden wallet.

Remember: Passphrases are used to create unique Hidden wallets and control access to them, without requiring a second hardware wallet or recovery seed. This means your funds are safe, even if your recovery seed is compromised. Just know that if you forget your passphrase, your hidden wallet is irretrievable.

Your recovery seed is a list of words that backs up your Bitcoin keys. It must be stored in physical form written down as a list of words and hiding them somewhere, safe from online and physical attack. While you can also memorize your recovery seed, you should never rely on memory alone.

So how do you take care of a recovery seed?

Why use a metal backup?

As long as your keys were generated offline by your Trezor hardware wallet, they are unique. To ensure long-term access to your Bitcoin, you need to back them up offline and keep them as safe as possible.

All our wallets come with paper templates that you can use to write down your recovery seed. Paper and pencil is surprisingly resilient and takes a long time to degrade, but it is vulnerable to fire, water and other environmental factors. To prevent disaster, you should consider eventually upgrading to a metal recovery seed.

What stands the test of time longer than paper? Metal. Since the creation of the BIP39 recovery seed standard, dozens of companies have been creating plates, capsules and other products which are purpose-built to store seed words.

Metal backups come in many shapes and sizes, but are most commonly made of stainless steel or titanium; metals which can withstand housefires, munitions impact, corrosion and more.

Different materials will tolerate different environments; the shape of the backup will mean some are easier to hide; and the design will mean some are more prone to data loss if damaged, but they may also easier to use than others depending on whether they record full words or just abbreviations.

What metal seed backup to buy

Depending on what type of recovery seed you have and how you want to store it, certain products may be more suitable than others. Standard recovery seed (one 12-word or 24-word list)

If you use a Model One, the standard recovery seed is a single list of 24 words, while the Model T creates one list of 12 words by default. To keep a recovery seed safe, you need to store it as a single list, in order.

Almost all metal backup products can accommodate up to 24-words of data, though they may be abbreviated. The choice is therefore up to you, and will depend on how you plan to store your seed and how easy you want it to be to recover the data.

A standard recovery seed poses a single point of failure, so it is important to choose a backup that will withstand the maximum amount of damage and remain legible.

Cryptosteel’s tile-based solution provides protection from fire and corrosion but is less resistant to crushing. At a lower price point than the CryptoTag, the Cassette is a great pick for anyone storing their seed in a durable spot such as a reinforced safe, where the plate is unlikely to be deformed.

Data is stored using small metal tiles, making it easy to recover but less resilient.

Shamir backup (multiple 20-word shares)

For more resilience against data loss, a Shamir backup is recommended over the standard seed. Shamir backup is only available on the Trezor Model T, and lets you choose how many shares to create and how many need to be used to recover the wallet.

What is Shamir backup?

Shamir backup is a security standard that removes two greatest risks involved in protecting your recovery seed: theft and destruction. Only available on the Trezor Model T hardware wallet.

You can have 3, 5, or as many as 16 separate lists to protect. Not all the shares need to survive to restore your wallet, but it is a good idea to keep at least the threshold required to restore the wallet safe in metal.

While the above products can also be used for Shamir backup, you will need one for each list, so a more economical solution is the Cryptosteel capsule. These are thin metal cylinders that hold letter tiles and can store 123 characters of data each. Buying multiple capsules will save you money, so you can safely protect all of your Shamir shares for the long term.

While these capsules only received a B grade for crushing from Lopp’s tests, they received an overall A-, which will be sufficient in most cases since Shamir allows several shares to be sacrificed without losing access to your funds.
