Last Wednesday 16 July we released the UFO mini app on Farcaster and the Base app. The first live broadcast was A New Day One from Base's launch of their new app in Los Angeles. We'd just shipped our mini app hours before and now Jesse Pollak, Brian Armstrong, founders, builders, Gary Vee and pplpleasr were live on the radio.

Turned out to be good way to start as the stream worked perfectly, allowing users on Farcaster and Base to tune into a video stream without leaving the app.

How we built it

• Harmonic SPE. Expanding Livepeer to onchain social. The mini app was produced by UFO founder Nick Hollins leading an initiative to grow Livepeer in the Farcaster and Base ecosystems. With major support from the Livepeer Foundation.

• Builders Garden. We ran a highly successful sprint with their team of developers to ship UFO as a mini app and add integrations for video on Livepeer, social layers on Farcaster, and user profiles on Privy. Recommend this team!

• Base livestream was organised at FarCon. We had early beta access to the Base app since FarCon NYC in May. The opportunity for radio as a mini app had been clear well before this and we've been doing the ground work to be ready.

The sooner you log in to UFO, the lower your ID number will be. It's a verifiable record of when you tuned in.

Tonight’s broadcast: Sound Of Fractures streams live on UFO at 16:00 BST (17:00 CET).

The London-based artist is known for experimentation. Turning collective memories into sound and movement with his interactive album SCENES.

Recorded at Thunderboom Records' event in London on April 11, this set features remixes of historical BBC audio and visuals, combined with original compositions. This is the first time SCENES appears as a continuous performance. Live on Wild Awake and in the archive.

co-tone brings together a collective of independent thinkers weaving cultural fabric through art, music, tech and nature. It is a city-based broadcast experiment. One that reflects the spirit of Copenhagen while tuning into a larger global frequency.

The first wave of co-tone broadcasts is an intentional departure from the churn of the algorithmic feed.

As aiio puts it: “Often, the time invested in crafting is disproportionate to the airtime a mix receives. With this launch, we want to revisit mixes from different timelines, not bound by the linearity of social media.”

We went for a piece of web2 internet with live chat functionality. It's fairly basic. You can join anon or set up a profile, add a profile picture and chat any time 24/7 on the UFO website. The chat is universal across the site so you can talk with people while navigating around.

This will be a great feature to have during live streams and broadcast events. Artists can invite friends to join the chat while playing on the radio. People can talk to each other while listening to a podcast. Tuning in from work. Let's see what happens.

It's an exciting time to build an internet radio station. The open internet is creating possibilities that have never existed before. It isn't too surprising. Internet radio is itself a fairly recent invention. For those in the know the onchain ecosystem is rapidly changing the game. Think crypto, web3, NFTs, blockchain, tokens, decentralized technology and whatever names you're familiar with.

This is an early innings and there's a tiny niche community who know about UFO. If you're reading these words, you're early to something. Often that's a good thing. Amidst all the craziness of the crypto scene, UFO is simply a radio station. Assembling as a network of collectives, activists, labels, artists and musicians around the world who care a lot about music. It's getting better all the time.

Our friend Jihad Esmail has been on fire lately, launching a studio at native to help founders and projects with shaping the stories that shape us. Jamie Reddington aka Sound Of Fractures is speaking at a workshop on Wednesday. He's one of the creators of Wild Awake. A music collective and community based mostly in the UK who now host a channel on UFO. There's already three mixes on the site from Vaarwell, Supersigil and Sound Of Fractures.

We're seeing Caribou on Thursday night at NDSM. Friday afternoon we'll catch Four Tet doing a 5-hour set in Westerpark. Have to feel like it will be an experience.

Composer and producer Alex Roth has just aired Coniunctio Spectures Inspiration Mix as a contribution for Wild Awake on UFO. Selecting tracks that became part of his psyche while working on the debut Supersigil album, Spectres. Featuring music by Rafael Anton Irisarri, Loscil, Ryuichi Sakamoto, Antwood, KMRU & Aho Ssan and more.

In alchemy, coniunctio refers to the blending together of different substances; a marrying of the opposites in an intercourse which brings to fruition the birth of a new element. Carl Jung used this term as a metaphor for the continuous interchange between the unconscious and consciousness which results in psychic growth.

For Alex, making a mix is a similar process: a blending of different materials that results in something new. The particular sounds herein populated my unconscious and conscious realities while I was making Spectres, for which I offer deep thanks to all the artists.

We're thrilled to announce a new collaboration with Livepeer, a protocol that provides open infrastructure for live streaming video, who awarded UFO a Video Disrupter Grant which is supporting development of what might be the first "onchain" radio station. We aim to make it easier to build radio on Livepeer and will be publishing our findings.

Since the radio site went live we've done a few broadcasts including Yu Su, Hieroglyphic Being and Pacific Rhythm in collaboration with Refraction, and a special mini-marathon broadcast of Season 2 of Fridays at the Park Season 2 with the park.

UFO released On Air Summer on August 21 to celebrate the launch of our radio station as part of Onchain Summer with Base.

The release is a generative collection of postcards minted on Highlight and made from photos contributed by radio shows including co-tone, FERMI, Higher, Refraction, Songcamp, the park, and UFO.

The postcards are intended to give an introductory sense of who's here in the network. Polaroid-style images without captions or context. Snapshots taken from our scenes around the world.

Mint funds are being allocated to support development of the UFO radio station and also split with the participating radio shows to support their own activities.

We've been thrilled to see high engagement with this release and 12,705 postcards minted so far. There's 25 days left to collect and as always there are surprises in store...

This Pods launch connects to UFO karma which is a reputation system inspired by Reddit. Providing a signal of onchain activity as it surfaces profiles, artistic works, connections, and collectives from the community.

Call it an experiment. A higher elevation of the internet. A non-financialised score that only goes up based on participation. Streaming into the future version of ufo.fm.

Karma is a system designed to measure your participation in UFO and with our friends, artists, musicians and collectives in the onchain scene and beyond.

Our goal is to continually offer rewards for the UFO community and pursue collaborations that you will enjoy. Thanks to an update from Stack, karma can now be awarded for onchain actions in real time.

As it happens, UFO was the first podcast onchain. Minting on launch day in collaboration with Zora in June 2023.

We've been experimenting with onchain distribution from day one. Publishing onchain fits with our ethos but minting podcasts on mainnet didn't make sense.

With much lower fees on Zora Network and the innovation of 1155 contracts creating a series of tokens, the time was right to go for it.

April has been a wild time. Much happening with communities like Higher arriving in the scene. The cultural creative realms are experimenting at the edges of what's possible, combining things like Zora, Party, Highlight and Farcaster.

The Physical Impossibility of Provenance

A couple of weeks back Jack Butcher minted The Physical Impossibility of Provenance -1988 as a 24-hour open edition on Base. Inspired by Myth Explored, Explained, Exploded (1993) by Damien Hirst. It came as a 3D mintable model in Zora, nothing new here. The interesting part is that people started to explore with the inbuilt AR feature that Zora has on the mobile version of their website.

For the easiest way to play with it, go to Zora and hit the AR button on the bottom right.

People then started sharing augmented images and videos of Jack's work in real museums around the world, including MoMa. The AR button is what I believe most of us never paid attention to, including me. I discovered it in a conversation me and Nick had with Kugusha, in which we decided to spin a 3D ↑ model together spit in between Apollo, Kugusga and Higher Collective. A permissionless exhibition of ↑↑↑ followed shorter after.

I had previously minted a 3D Sculpture on Zora, so I was super curious to try the AR viewer and check it in real scale. I loved it. To be clear: as a seasoned artist it wasn’t the first time I’ve seen my own art in AR or VR, but the idea that AR art can live onchain giving provenance and being so accessible at the same time is exciting.

It brought me to bring some of my 3D Art onchain, to make more of it and discover more XR Artists like me.

I started a Zora XR channel on Farcaster dedicated to promoting and curating 3D interactive mints on Zora and I will be shining a light onto this underrated form of art through UFO Happy Mondays - the UFO initiative that allows network members to select 20 mints to share an equal split of our $Enjoy allocation each week… here we go, back to talk about tipping $

Where do app recommendations you get on traditional socials come from? If we compare our feeds— how similar are they? Has your algo fed you this video already? To what extent do these algorithms consolidate the echo chambers we're in? 

It's like we're in invisible cellophane bubbles, the same info regurgitating inside, getting filled to the brim with noise. We are still living in a world where these wrappers are made by corporates determining our tastes and interests through targeted ads. We're full! 

Instead, we want to eat real content from real people, not from synthetic algorithms. We don't want a manufactured community where attention is subsidised by monetised eyeballs. 

Onchain media built on Web3 social graphs is a breath of fresh air. There's an opportunity here to amplify real voices from real people, access collectively organised knowledge and embed keys to navigate different environments.

How did this get made?

As usual we’re doing something new.

We got talking with Jonny Mack from Fabric and Hypersub and together we designed a new type of subscription. It had to be free and not available to mint, which are unusual characteristics.

Artists and creators such as LGHT, 0xen, Ted, 0xDesigner, Chris Carella, Sirsu and Artcaster are using Hypersub as a place for subscribers to pay for early access, exclusive content, professional services, and prizes.

Something to know about Hypersub is you subscribe for amounts of time, perhaps it's 1 month, 3 months or a year. This time gets added to your token in seconds that count down until you’d need to renew the subscription.

What's the Network Pass for?

Our interest to do this was creating this building block.

We created an initial 180 Passes and started granting them to members' wallets set for 84 months. This concept is opt-in. It's a collective experiment.

Network Pass members have the option to toggle between active and inactive. It's like setting your status on a retro internet chat like ICQ or Myspace. Being active means you can broadcast to a collective signal. Other times you might prefer to be inactive.

This framework is a way to be in sync. It's a serendipity machine. Participants benefit from shared discovery. It's similar to groups that form around a community radio station and live music scene.

With this approach the Pass is held by a spectrum of members from active UFO contributors to friends who have collaborated with us and supported the project.

There's invaluable context to be discovered from an onchain social graph.

It's a synchronicity. It’s the future of the internet.

This is only the beginning.

Let's introduce a few hosts. Their shows will surprise and delight, along with other shows joining the network.

Alex is head of Growth at Zerion and recently launched Still Here. A show to explore his curiosity talking with people who are founders and builders. Through all the ups and downs of crypto. Answering the question of what motivates and inspires them. Why they’re still here.

aiio is a researcher, community builder and writer bridging across web3 and the underground electronic music and arts communities in Copenhagen. She writes about the concept of space, linking it to human culture, existence, and the need for adaptive ecosystems.

LGHT is an artist, designer, writer, and technologist based in the US. Creator of the Hypercultures essay series as well as co-founding Based Management. His work focuses on protocol design, the science of digital language/memetics, and zero to one acceleration of tech primitives and adoption.

How Did UFO Start?

It's likely you haven't heard the origin stories, we don't much talk about ourselves. Let's rewind. UFO went live in September 2022 when I returned home to Byron Bay in Australia. I'd been travelling for a while in Europe and met amazing people including future UFO radio hosts Alex Guy and aiio at ETH Barcelona.

Ivano Salonia and myself have been working together since 2020 and he was in from the jump as Art Director. We designed the UFO brand with inspirations from retro psychedelia, music and science fiction. The purpose was to establish a radio station, magazine and onchain collective.

This project is paying homage to the legendary and short-lived UFO Club created by Joe Boyd and John "Hoppy" Hopkins in December 1966. The nightclub famous for light shows and happenings. Plays and poetry readings. Staging artists like Jimi Hendrix, Pink Floyd and Yoko Ono at 31 Tottenham Court Road in central London, a few blocks from the British Museum.

Just imagine what it was like to be at the UFO Club. The people you would meet.

This scene is inspiring to what we're doing. We're here for similar reasons.

In this time, John Dunbar, Peter Asher and Barry Miles had founded the Indica Gallery which ran from 1965 to 1967. Their group published the International Times underground newspaper which is said to have inspired Jann Wenner visiting London in his early 20s before returning to San Francisco and creating Rolling Stone.

They had connections to the UFO Club and there are phenomenal print ads which ran in IT.

John Dunbar is an artist who was married to Marianne Faithfull and he was the one who introduced John Lennon to Yoko Ono at their gallery. Barry was friends with The Beatles, Allen Ginsberg and members of the Beat Generation and has written books about the 1960s.

These are the people spaced around the studio in Abbey Road holding pencils with tape loops running around for Tomorrow Never Knows. Rick Rubin had Peter Asher on Tetragrammaton recently telling stories from the London scene. Casually seeing the Rolling Stones every Monday night in a small club.

For current day outlets we like NTS, The Lot Radio, Song Exploder and the Marginalian.

We're here in this ecosystem of web3 projects and collectives like Songcamp, Metalabel, Nouns, FWB, Purple, Seed Club, Cheeks Collective, BLVKHVND, Folklore, Public Assembly, wavWRLD, thepark, Builder DAO, JPG, Gitcoin, Forefront, Take Up Space, Future Primitive, Based Management and many others.

It's an onchain movement on protocols like Ethereum, Optimism, Base, Zora, Farcaster and Lens.

Why Radio?

Before starting in crypto in 2017, I was a radio host and producer for 10 years in Sydney. Presenting an independent music show on FBi Radio, contributing as a music programmer, videographer and venue booker.

These were formative times and I experienced what a collective signal for music, arts and ideas looks like with 100+ DJs. Radio stations are a place to find where culture is happening in a city. Art and music is celebrated. Young people get a start in creative fields. Anyone with a radio dream can make it happen.

A show on the radio is a finite resource. There's only so much time in a day and it kinda means something to be on the air. It's a live signal. There's something cool about that.

It's been a wild dream to create a radio station.

I was talking about radio, music and the sixties when I met Charlie Waterhouse in London in 2022. We'd first met a few months before through ASSEMBLY workshops organized by Metalabel. He's an early contributor at Extinction Rebellion who helped design their art and iconography.

The plan was to record the first podcast at his office in Brixton, but it was too noisy. Instead we talked off-mic about music, what's happening in web3, the media, politics, climate and behind the scenes at Extinction Rebellion before heading to the pub. I flew home two days later.

Once a stable internet connection was set up from a farm house in the Australian countryside, Charlie and me sat down to record UFO 01. We've been on the air since then.

Charlie is a co-founder of Hard Art with people like Clare Farrell, Brian Eno and Es Devlin who are getting ready to stage The Fête of Britain, a four-day celebration of collaboration and imagination in the face of the great challenges of our time, Feb 22 — 25 in Manchester’s Aviva Studios.

It has been a momentous few days in the onchain realm. On Friday, Farcaster launched Frames and opened the design space for developers to embed just about anything into a cast on Farcaster. Offering new mechanics which are only possible in web3 social.

Frames are customizable mini interactive apps and embeds which have already been used to sell $1K of girl scout cookies in an hour, release merch with instant sales, drop a free mint of 1000 NFTs, and stage a playable version of Doom.

Users can free mint NFTs in the feed, super fast, gated by their Farcaster ID, with creators covering the gas. There's great possibilities for publishing, releasing music, streaming content and many things.

In surprise news the profession of journalism and media is under siege from technology and economics. Pitchfork the latest outlet to announce layoffs. In a time of infinite content advertising models for media are broken. Tech platforms siphoned the capital. How do we pay salaries for journalists, writers, editors, publishers, curators, and everyone involved unless optimising for ever accelerating growth in a cartoon world?

We do kind of need media to help make sense of things.

What's happening is technology enabling a new paradigm. Onchain media. Web3 social. The next internet. Collectively assembling networks of internet users who create, publish, and participate in a social graph of mutual discovery onchain.

We're seeing early signs of migration away from algorithmic social feeds which are controlled by corporate interests in selling ad space. Because we live in a cartoon world we saw Elon telling Tim Cook and Apple "Go fuck yourselves" about advertising live onstage.

Apple is in this legal stoush with Epic Games, and when the judge afforded developers the right to inform users in their app about cheaper prices on web, updated Apple rules to charge 27% on transactions when users buy on web. Wild scenes.

Who owns the internet?

Vital and wonderful music, arts, releases and ideas are produced every day. People are always inventing creative ways to release their art into the world. The internet will simply design for the most optimised versions of this with ecosystems built on interoperable networks, Ethereum and the Optimism Superchain and so on.

It might be super niche for quite a while, or it'll suddenly take off.

Either way, the future of the internet loops back to the past.

We're in for high novelty. Reality bending things. Weird shit happening. Cataclysmic forces, social, cultural and ecological change. A revolutionary, turbulent time. Cartoonish and strange.

Apparently UFOs or UAPs are the official story? We saw the X-Files and now the US is saying, 'We've been recording these things for years, how crazy is this shit? They're always hovering off the coast. Anyways we don't know what they are.'

Everything all at once.

We're here in the studio working on the UFO radio station. Imagining what can happen in this year. Broadcasting music, arts and ideas. Assembling a collective network. Starting a club. Publishing. Connecting communities from around the world. Collaborating with artists, writers and musicians. Designing internet spaces.

We find ourselves at the end of a long journey, the end of the beginning of the story. Honestly it's been a troubling and heartbreaking year. With wars and horrifying violence. Sending love to all people and for peace.

With love for our friend Kevin Mendoza who passed away in November.

Kevin was an amazing musician and artist who put great energy into supporting those around him and establishing spaces for creativity. He was kind, generous and visionary. An electric person to hang with. Along with his partners they opened Jaiyen Resort in 2018, an eco retreat space for artists on the waterfront in Koh Yao Noi in Thailand.

He founded WEN Tokyo artists residency and NFT gallery in 2022 with a mission to unite innovators to build the future. When I went to the ETH Tokyo hackathon with Ivano Salonia in April this year, we had the chance to spend a week with Kevin. We hadn't seen each other in-person since 2019 before the pandemic lockdowns, and first got to know each other during an impromptu trip to AfrikaBurn.

Meeting on the street outside a gallery in Harajuku for a crypto art party, Kevin was introducing us to friends in the local artists scene which was cool meeting them. They taught us that Tokyo trains end around midnight, so people tend to stay out all night and get food and be out until the trains come back around 5am.

Catching up with Kevin, he told us about WEN Tokyo which was built on what used to be a hotel in the city. Creating a gallery and residency hosting artists including Ben Kovach, Emily Xie, DeeKay, Matt DesLauriers, Cath Simard, Reuben Wu, Clément Morin, Shavonne Wong and Rik Oostenbroek.

Ivano was meeting Kevin for the first time, and we told him about what's happening with UFO and talked ideas for collaborative projects in the future. I am appreciative we had this time to meet again after a few years.

Back in April, we flew in to participate in the ETH Tokyo hackathon and explore ideas in onchain music, arts, media, web3 social and communities. Unexpectedly we won a Lens Top 10 Prize for a project playing with live streaming and content ideas for an onchain radio network.

After 10 days in Japan it was time to announce what UFO was doing.

Quietly this was always the plan. We think a collective signal for the counterculture is an intriguing idea. Something we find worthwhile and optimistic for the future.

Sure enough, people are resonating with it. A network of creators, labels and collectives from around the world is coming together with backgrounds in pirate radio, DIY music scenes, activism, festivals, arts, crypto and publishing.
