Writer's block

Overcoming Writer's Block: Lessons from a New Writer

By Chika-Umeh Chinelo Valerie

A New Writer Exploring the Chaos of Creativity

Writer's block. It’s that frustrating moment when you sit down to write, staring at a blank screen, and... nothing. No words come out. No ideas feel coherent—or worse, they feel nonexistent.

As someone who recently started writing, I just learned about this phenomenon. And let me tell you, experiencing it firsthand is frustrating.

For me, writer's block isn’t just about not knowing what to write. Sometimes, it’s the pressure to make my writing perfect or the fear that what I create won’t be good enough. Other times, it’s stress, distractions, or simply exhaustion.

The blank page feels like it’s judging you, and every word you attempt to write feels wrong. It’s disheartening, and it can feel endless.

But I’m learning. As I navigate this writing journey, I’ve discovered a few strategies that help me push through the block. Here’s what’s been working for me so far:

Write Anything (Even If It’s Terrible)

Sometimes, the hardest part is just starting. I’ve learned to give myself permission to write badly. It’s okay if the words don’t flow perfectly at first. What matters is getting something—anything—on the page. Editing comes later.

Set Tiny Goals

I’m someone who thrives on setting goals, and I’ve realized that smaller ones work best for writing. Instead of aiming to write a whole chapter or article, I focus on one paragraph, one sentence, or even one word. Breaking it down makes the task feel manageable.

Talk It Out

If I can’t write, I talk. Sometimes, I explain my ideas out loud—even if I’m the only one listening. Saying the words helps my thoughts take shape. I also have a friend whose DMs I shamelessly rant in when I need to work through an idea.

The Biggest Lesson: Be Kind to Yourself

One of the most valuable things I’ve learned is that beating yourself up over writer’s block only makes it worse. Creativity isn’t something you can force, and it’s okay to have off days. Sometimes, your brain just needs a break.

Writer’s block doesn’t mean you’re not a good writer. It doesn’t mean you’ve run out of ideas forever. It’s just a temporary roadblock. And like any roadblock, you can find a way around it.

What Works for You?

If you’ve ever struggled with writer’s block, I’d love to hear how you overcame it. Share your tips and tricks—I’m always looking for new ideas to try.

Remember, the words will come. You just have to keep showing up for them.

Writing
Journaling
Pen

This is one of my favourite topics to talk or write about. I strongly believe in the statement "pen that thought".

In a fast-paced world filled with distractions, finding a moment of clarity can feel like an impossible task. Yet, one simple practice has stood the test of time as a powerful tool for self-reflection, emotional processing, and personal growth: journaling.

Whether you’re a seasoned writer or someone who has never put pen to paper, the act of journaling can offer profound benefits that extend far beyond the page.

In this article, we’ll explore the transformative power of journaling and how you can incorporate it into your daily routine.

1. Boosting Creativity

If we're being honest with ourselves, a lot of us get many ideas at some point. If no we fail to write it down, we eventually forget. Journaling can be a game-changer. The act of writing freely without the constraints of grammar or structure can unlock new ideas and perspectives. Many writers, artists, and creators including myself use journaling as a brainstorming tool, allowing their thoughts to flow freely and exploring concepts without fear of judgment. By creating a habit of writing regularly, you can cultivate a more creative mindset and discover new avenues for expression

2. Better understanding of yourself

Journaling encourages self-reflection, which is essential for personal growth. By regularly writing about your experiences, thoughts, and feelings, you can identify patterns in your behavior and thought processes. This heightened self-awareness can lead to valuable insights about your motivations, desires, and areas for improvement. Over time, you may find that you become more in tune with your emotions and better equipped to make decisions that align with your true self.

3. Goal Setting and Achievement

Another powerful aspect of journaling is its role in goal setting. Writing down your goals not only helps clarify what you want to achieve but also serves as a commitment to yourself. By breaking down larger goals into smaller, actionable steps, you can track your progress and celebrate your achievements along the way. Journaling can also help you reflect on your goals regularly, allowing you to adjust your plans as needed and stay motivated.

4. Emotional Release and Processing

One of the most immediate benefits of journaling is its ability to provide an emotional outlet. Writing about your thoughts and feelings can help you process complex emotions, reduce stress, and gain clarity on what you’re experiencing. When you put your feelings into words, you create a safe space to explore your inner world without judgment. This practice can be particularly helpful during challenging times, allowing you to articulate your struggles and fears, which can lead to a sense of relief and understanding.

3 Practical Tips for Getting Started

If you’re new to journaling, here are some practical tips to help you get started:

1. Start Small: If you’re unsure where to begin, start with just a few sentences. You can write about your day, your feelings, or even a specific prompt.

2. Be Honest: Allow yourself to write freely and honestly. Your journal is a private space, so don’t hold back. Write without fear of judgment. If you’re feeling stuck, consider using journaling prompts to spark your creativity. Questions like “What am I grateful for today?” or “What challenges did I face this week?” can guide your writing.

3. Set a Routine: Establish a regular time for journaling, whether it’s in the morning to set intentions for the day or in the evening to reflect on your experiences.

Conclusion

Journaling is more than just a writing exercise; it’s a powerful tool for self-discovery, emotional healing, and personal growth. By incorporating this practice into your daily routine, you can unlock a deeper understanding of yourself, enhance your creativity, and improve your mental well-being. So grab a notebook, find a quiet space, and start your journaling journey today. You may be surprised at the transformative power of putting your thoughts on paper.

Platforms like Discord, telegram, Twitter(X) spaces often serve as hubs for learning and engagement.

I'll use myself as an example, last year I attended the CCC Ibadan organised by women in Defi. That is where I would say I got onboarded into the Web 3. After that event, there was another class that year and I grabbed the opportunity so fast. Why? Because I was convinced that Web 3 can change my life.

There are many ways one can be onboarded. Example: WID whose aim is to bring as many ladies and women onchain and also building a sustainable community for its members.

In conclusion, Onboarding isn’t a one-time event.

Your job isn't complete by just telling them about a product. Continuously refining the process based on user feedback and changing needs ensures ongoing success
