(if you don’t have AVAX for fees, you can also use Bungee refuel).

After NFTs are minted (it can take some time) bridge your NFTs from Polygon to Avalanche here

https://app.holograph.xyz/bridge

E) Let’s use OmniBTC bridge again to send you USDC from Polygon back to Arbitrum

https://app.omnibtc.finance/

The last bridge we will use for this guide is ETH Goerli Bridge.

What is Web3?

Web 3 is often addressed as a new era of the internet. It embraces the idea that the web is decentralized, permissionless, trustless, and incorporates native payments.

In order to understand the concept of Web3 better we should clarify the two basic concepts of Web3: blockchain and smart contracts.

Simply put, blockchain is a system of recording information in a way that makes it difficult or impossible to change, hack, or cheat the system.

Chris Dixon from Andersen Horowitz determines blockchain as a «virtual computer that works on top of the network of physical computers».

Blockchain is not being monitored by a particular organization and hardware is being controlled by software (and not vice versa, like before)

A smart contract is a computer program that allows users to interact with the blockchain. A smart contract scales down on formality and costs associated with traditional methods.

Why is Web3 important?

There are a few things that make Web3 important for users:

Ownership. Web3 allows direct ownership through NFTs. Let’s say you purchased an in-game asset. Previously, if your account got deleted you would lose ownership of your in-game item. In Web3 no one could take away your ownership.

DAO. Tokens owned by you act as a shares representation of the company. Users can vote on important decisions and you will no longer depend on the organization's policy, assigned by someone else. You are the one making that decision.

Identity. In Web2 you not only have to create an account for every single platform you use, but you also need to share private data with them. Web3 solves these problems by allowing you to control your digital identity with an Ethereum address and ENS profile. Using an Ethereum address provides a single login across platforms that is secure, censorship-resistant, and anonymous.

Native payments. No need to rely on banks anymore, you can make a direct payment via your browser without using any third party.

However, with all the good stuff come the challenges. I am not going to discuss all of them in this article. The topic that particularly interests me is the risks and security challenges of Web3.

But before diving there, let’s do a short comparison of how the security was addressed in earlier versions of the web.

However, as good as it sounds, the Web3 era is a bit idealistic. In reality, lots of Web3 applications still rely on Web2 infrastructure.

The challenge of bridging Web2 to Web3

A lot of companies nowadays are in the process of bridging from Web2 to Web3, e.g. storing transactions on-chain, but still having business data off-chain. The challenge here is to help those companies merge blockchain data with traditional databases to make sure no valuable data is lost.

One might ask: But why do we need to «merge» with traditional databases? Why can’t we just store all data on the blockchain?

First of all, it’s the cost of transactions. On-chain transactions imply high gas fees and sometimes slow throughput;

Some non-transactional data might be too large to be stored on the blockchain efficiently;

Blockchain transactions are immutable, they cannot be changed or deleted. But sometimes you need that ability for data to be changed.

Scalability in the current blockchain ecosystem makes on-chain analytics impossible;

Storing data on the blockchain means it’s viewable by the public. Some sensitive and private data should not be public.

Based on that, the perfect solution to store data seems to have a combination of on-chain and off-chain databases. However, communication between traditional database and blockchain is not as easy as it sounds. Let’s imagine you have to create an annual report for the organization you work for. Instead of just adding tons of tables to the report, you might naturally want to create a diagram or a pie chart. You send a query to the traditional database and use the data to create the charts you need. But how can you guarantee that data is not tampering? You cannot tell for sure if anyone has maliciously added information to that data.

So, the key issue with decentralized applications is having to work with centralized databases that have the ability to tamper with data.

What is Space and Time and how does it fulfill the promise of Web3?

Space and Time is the first world’s first hybrid database and data warehouse that connects on-chain and off-chain data while remaining fully decentralized.

How it works

With Space and Time, you can run queries against data that have been indexed from all major blockchains and data you’ve loaded from any off-chain source. The received analytic results can be connected directly to smart contracts to enable new, expanded use cases for gaming, DeFi, and enterprise-scale business processes.

Sounds fun, doesn’t it?

I highlighted the most important things you need to know about Space and Time in the table below:

Does it compare to any solutions, existing on the market already? To date, Space and Time is unique in the Web3 space. The closest match might be a combination of The Graph + Snowflake (but cryptographically guaranteed).

Read more about Space and Time:

Website

Twitter

Discord
